Many hearts, One Home R Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY celebrates 35 years
onald McDonald House Charities of Central New York is celebrating its 35th anniversary and inviting community members to attend its Many Hearts One Home Celebration at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the SRC Arena and Events Center. The annual event, now in its 16th year,
helps raise much-needed funds to support the many guest families who rely on the CNY Ronald McDonald House each year as a place to stay together when they are going through the unthinkable. Since opening its doors on Thanksgiving Day in 1982, the CNY Ronald McDonald
House has served as a temporary home for thousands of families who travel to Syracuse from across New York state and northern Pennsylvania, and in some cases, foreign countries. The house provides the convenience of a comfortable room and w a r m
bed, a home-cooked meal, and support and compassion all while keeping families whose children are seriously ill or injured close to Syracuse-area hospitals and medical centers. Over the past 35 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY has grown significantly, most notably when the organization expanded into its new house in 2012. The larger, fully accessible home has allowed the nonprofit to meet the diverse needs of guest families and offer expanded services to accommodate even more families in
need. Since opening the new House, the organization has seen a significant increase in its occupancy rate and, in 2016, more than 2,300 family members stayed at the House. “For 35 years we’ve been fortunate to be able to help keep families exactly where they belong … Together,” said Beth Trunfio, executive director, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York. “After all this time, we continue to rely on the generosity of the community to support the services we provide.” Tickets for Many Hearts One Home can be purchased online at rmhcny.org or by calling 315-4761027. Enjoy live and silent auctions, cocktails and food stations. Cocktail attire is suggested. To learn more about Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY and ways to get involved, visit rmhcny.org.

A native of Williamsville in Erie County, Poturalski is considered a hot prospect for the Checkers’ NHL affiliate, the Carolina Hurricanes. Last season, the right-hander played 74 games for Charlotte, scored 19 goals and made 14 assists for a total of 33 points. Although he’s just 5-foot-10 and 190

In nine games for the Checkers so far this year, Poturalski has netted two goals. Poturalski’s experience ranges from juniors to collegiate. He played junior hockey in the United States Hockey League with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders before committing to the University of New Hampshire. In his sophomore season with the Wildcats in 2015–16, Poturalski led the conference in scoring with 52 points in just 37 games. Earning selection to the East First-Star Team and named as a finalist

This season the Checkers are off to a decent start, winning six of their first nine games. The Crunch, the other hand, have won just three of its first nine games. SUDOKU
Crossword
By Donna Newman
Regina Petrera-Chiaizia
“Say, Say, Say” what you want, but Paul McCartney is looking for love! “Yesterday,” he was living in a hoarding situation, but “With a Little Luck,” this cross-eyed cutie will find the family of his own very soon! Our Paul McCartney is about six years old and is a little shy, but he’s very sweet and would make a wonderful addition to a loving family. So “Listen to What the Man Says” and adopt your newest best friend from the CNYSPCA! For more information on adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

CNY Jazz launches new series
The storied Marriott Syracuse Downtown, the historic Hotel Syracuse, will partner with CNY Jazz Central to create the new “Jazz at the Cavalier” series in the luxurious Cavalier Room. All events will take place Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., beginning on Nov. 8. The series will be featuring over a dozen of Upstate New York’s finest resident jazz and cabaret vocalists with grand piano accompaniment including Nancy Kelly, Ronnie Leigh, Moe Harrington, Andrea Miceli, Danielle Patrice, Scott Dennis, Just Joe, Rochester’s Jon Seiger and Ithaca-based
Sally Ramirez, supported by pianists Rick Montalbano, Dick Ford, Dave Solazzo, and Jimmy Cox, among others. The full schedule may be found at cnyjazz.org. Modeled after formats made famous in midtown Manhattan at hotels like the Carlisle and the Algonquin, the series provides an intimate cabaret atmosphere in the cozy, clubby surroundings of the Cavalier Room. The series is free, with no cover charge, and holders of CNY Jazz Club cards will enjoy 10 percent food and drink discounts off craft cocktails and the small plate menu. “I feel very privileged
to be able to present a series like this in the historic surroundings of our city’s flagship hotel”, said Larry Luttinger, organizer of the series. “To be programming where bandleaders like Carl Silfer, Williamson’s Parisians, and the Stan Colella Orchestra held court for so long, is an honor. I can’t tell you how thankful I am that Ed Riley’s team has embraced this concept. I also remember the more recent days when the hotel was the mid-week ‘over the hump day’ place to unwind for downtown professionals. Now there’s a reason to restart this tradition as well”. Said Ed Riley, developer
and driving force behind the hotel’s renaissance, “The Cavalier Room was designed to be the perfect setting for patrons to relax and enjoy everything the hotel has to offer, and we’re delighted to partner with CNY Jazz
to host this series. Jazz at the Cavalier personifies our commitment to quality hospitality for travelers and downtown residents alike, carrying on our hotel’s tradition as the social and cultural
hub that this grand old girl has been for almost a century”. A full “Jazz at the Cavalier” entertainment schedule can be found at cnyjazz.org/jazz-at-thecavalier/.
‘Frost Nixon’ opens Friday
“Frost Nixon” will be on stage from Friday through Saturday, Nov. 10-18, at Central New York Playhouse, ShoppingTown Mall, DeWitt. British talk-show host David Frost, determined to resurrect his career, risks everything on a series of in-depth interviews in order to extract an apology
from Richard M. Nixon. The cagey Nixon, however, is equally bent on redeeming himself in his nation’s eyes. In the television age, image is king, and both men are desperate to outtalk and upstage each other as the cameras roll. Ticket prices and showtimes vary; visit cnyplayhouse.com for details.
Former Syracuse University captain joins the Silver Knights

ormer Syracuse Orange star Liam Callahan joins the Syracuse Silver Knights for the 2017-18 season. Callahan finished his college career after the 2016 season. He spent three seasons with the Orange and two with Villanova. “I have watched Liam for several years now dating back to his days at Syracuse University,” Silver Knights Head Coach Ryan Hall said. “He is a work horse and lets his play speak for itself. I am looking forward to him contributing to this team as he becomes more comfortable with the indoor game.” Callahan started his college career at Villanova University, where he played most of his games at left back. He transferred to Syracuse University in 2014, starting in all but two of the games he featured in. Callahan totaled three goals and 12 assists in three seasons with the Orange. He shined as a left wing back and left midfielder for SU. “Syracuse is like my second home,” said Callahan. “To get a chance to come back here and play is pretty special. To be part of an organization that represents Syracuse at a professional level is also pretty special.” Callahan was selected in the second round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids. Most recently, he played for K-W United FC in the Premier Development League. Callahan recorded one goal and four assists with the club this past season. “I have been a fan of Liam since watching him with Empire United Development Academy where I ran some sessions for his group,” said Silver Knights General Manager Tommy Tanner. “We are very excited to have him with the Silver Knights as we continue to grow a relationship with Syracuse
