Syracuse Crunch face off against Belleville Senators at home on Friday By Russ Tarby

For the past 16 years, the Binghamton Senators have been one of the Syracuse Crunch’s bitterest rivals in the American Hockey League, playing their home games at the Broome County Arena. This year, the Sens’ parent club, the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, moved its top farm club to Canada, specifically to Belleville, Ontario, just 167 miles from Ottawa.

The Crunch face off against the Belleville Senators at 7 p.m. Friday. Oct. 13, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena. On Friday, Oct. 20, the Crunch will host the Parlor City’s newest hockey franchise, the Binghamton Devils, the top affiliate of the NHL’s New Jersey club. The Devils’ AHL squad was previously based in Albany where attendance lagged far behind league averages. Helmed by second-year coach Benoit Groulx, the Crunch hope to repeat as the

American Hockey League’s North Division champions this season after posting an admirable 38-24 won-loss record last year before losing in the final round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. After facing Belleville on Friday, the home team plays against Thruway Rival the Utica Comets here at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Returning to the Crunch lineup this season are centers Cory Conacher and Matthew Peca, left wingers Adam Erne and Tye McGinn, and

defensemen Daniel Walcott and Ben Thomas. Conacher’s younger brother, right winger Shane Conacher, joins the team this season after playing 28 games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies last year. He and two other rookie wingers – Dennis Yan and Alexander Volkov – are all expected to contribute offensively. In the net, Syracuse boasts a veteran goalie in 36-year-old Michael Leighton backed up by 20-year-old rookie netminder Connor Ingram. For information visit syracusecrunch.com.

cnyspca pet of the week

Capone needs a home

By Donna Newman The only thing this Capone will steal is your heart! This handsome guy came to the shelter weighing only thirty-nine pounds. With TLC (and extra portions!), he’s strong, dark and handsome! Capone’s a lover; he loves going for a run, he loves car rides, and he loves treats. But most of all, Capone loves people. He’s a young guy full of energy and fun. Capone is great in the car and patient in the bath. He would need to be an only pet, but that’s OK with Capone – more love and attention for him! Meet Capone for yourself and see what a special guy he is! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315454-4479.

Free a cappella concert set for Oct. 15 in Syracuse

The groundbreaking New York City-based Jewish a cappella group Six13 will perform a free live show at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Temple Adath Yeshurun, 450 Kimber Road, Syracuse. Six13 is a six-man a cappella group anchored by a strong Jewish identity. The group’s songs range from hip-hop to rock, sounding like a full band, but only using their voices. Their music is fueled by thumping beats, intricate arrangements and soulful harmonies. Half of the group—Mike Boxer, Eric Dinowitz and Rob Operman—got their a cappella start at Binghamton University, while the other three—Craig Resmovits, Jacob Spadaro and Mordy Weinstein—got started at Queens College. The concert will be appealing to all ages—from preschoolers to the most senior members of our community. With over eight million views on YouTube, Six13 is becoming an internet sensation. They have been featured on “The Today Show” and “The View” and in The Huffington Post and Time Magazine, and they are three-time casting finalists for NBC’s a cap-

How to harvest, store and preserve herbs from the garden Enjoy herbs all year round. Harvest herbs now for garden-fresh meals and preserve a few for the winter ahead. Snip a few leaves or leaf-covered stems as needed. For the same intensity of flavor, you generally need two to three times more fresh herbs than dried except for Rosemary which has an equally strong flavor fresh or dried. Continue harvesting herbs as needed throughout the growing season. And don’t worry about harming the plant because regular harvesting encourages new growth which means more for you to harvest. Just be sure to leave enough foliage to maintain plant growth. You can remove as much as fifty percent of the foliage from annual herb plants. This is about when the plants near their final height. You can remove up to one third from established perennial plants that have been in the garden for several months or more. Harvest when the plant has formed buds, but before they open into flowers for the greatest concentration of flavor. This is the perfect time to harvest herbs you plan to preserve. Use a pair of garden scissors or pruners for faster and easier harvesting. Make your cuts above a set of healthy leaves to keep the plants looking good. Then preserve the

flavor and zest of herbs with proper storage and preservation. Store thin leafy herbs like parsley and cilantro for up to a week in the refrigerator. Place in a jar of water, like a flower arrangement, and loosely cover with a plastic bag. Keep basil out of the fridge to avoid discoloration and others on the counter for quick and frequent use. Wrap dry thicker-leafed herbs like sage and thyme in a paper towel, set inside a plastic bag and place in a warmer section of the refrigerator. Freeze sprigs, whole leaves or chopped clean herbs on a cookie sheet. Or pack clean diced herbs in ice cube trays and fill the empty spaces with water. These are great for use in soups and stews. Store the frozen herbs and ice cubes in an airtight container or baggie in the freezer. Or bundle several stems together, secure with a rubber band and use a spring type clothespin to hang them in a warm dry place to dry. Make your own drying rack from an old embroidery hoop, string and S hooks. Visit Bonnie Plants do-ityourself Herb Drying Rack project (bonnieplants.com) for detailed instructions. Get creative and use some of your herbs to make a fragrant edible wreath. Use fresh herbs that are flexible and easier to shape into a wreath. They will dry in place and

Bonnie plants

can be harvested as needed. Speed up the drying process in the microwave. Place herbs on a paper towel-covered paper plate. Start with one to two minutes on high. Repeat for 30 seconds as needed until the herbs are brittle. Store dried herbs in an airtight plastic or glass jar. Keep enjoying these fresh-from-

the-garden flavors throughout the remainder of the season. And consider preserving a few for you, your family and friends to enjoy throughout the winter. Gardening expert Melinda Myers has written over 20 gardening books, including “Small Space Gardening and the “Midwest Gardener’s Handbook.

She hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything: Food Gardening For Everyone DVD set and the nationally syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment TV and radio segments. Myers is also a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine and was commissioned by Bonnie Plants for her expertise to write this article. Myers’ website is melindamyers.com.
