VAREKAI Flies INTO syracuse Cirque du Soleil production comes to War Memorial Nov. 15-19
C
irque du Soleil is returning to Syracuse with one of its signature productions - Varekai. The seven performances will take place from Nov15-19 at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Ticket prices vary. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at cirquedusoleil.com/varekai. The jaw-dropping and mind-blowing Varekai showcases an acrobatic extravaganza which will take audiences on an extraordinary journey. Under the “theme of Icarus,” fans will see an amazing display of high level acrobatics and performers ready to accomplish perfectly skilled and gravity-defying feats.
Piecing together all possible genres, arts, and disciplines – original music, costumes, set design, choreography, live vocals, videoart and make-up solutions – at their heart, these shows maintain circus arts in all their manifestations, starting from street performances to high-tech and awe-aspiring aerial acts. The international cast of Varekai consists of 50 performers coming from 13 countries, including six musicians and two singers. In addition, there are 50 crew members on tour including coaches, performance medicine therapists, wardrobe employees, stage managers, technical specialists and administrative personnel.

and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. The word Varekai (pronounced ver·ay·’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies - the universal wanderers. Directed by

Hope for Bereaved offers support groups to make connections, get help By Tami Scott
W
hen Michele Peak’s 7-yearold daughter died of complications from pulmonary hypertension, she knew she and her family would need support in coping with their grief. When Felipe and Evelyn Diaz learned of their son’s murder on Thanksgiving Day, they knew they wouldn’t be able to get through it alone. And when “Laura” (whose name has been changed at her request) got the call that her son had died by suicide, she, too, realized she would need support with her unforeseen sorrow. Each sought help. Each found Hope for Bereaved. “When something like this happens, it turns you upside down,” said Felipe Diaz, whose son, Jonathan, 26, was fatally shot last year after a fight had escalated outside a bar in Syracuse’s Armory Square. “There’s a lot of confusion. There’s a lot of uncertainty. There’s a lot of fear about how you’re going to go on.” He and his wife, Evelyn, attended a support group for bereaved parents about a month after their son was killed. They found that type of therapy, in conjunction with HFB’s private counseling, helped them considerably with their pain. “There’s always strength in people coming together with a common purpose,” Diaz said. “Just being there physically and being connected with other folks who are going through the same process is therapeutic.” Hope for Bereaved offers 12 different support groups, including three for widows and widowers, two for youth, one for those whose loved ones died by drug overdose and another for those whose loved ones died by homicide, two for those
whose loved ones died by suicide, two for those whose child or infant died, and one for those whose parent, relative, partner or friend died. Before the start of each support group, facilitators go over some ground rules to follow: share experience and feelings, not opinions; be non-judgmental and non-prying; the atmosphere is one of sharing — no one is to be put on the spot; and confidentiality is observed. Peak admitted she was nervous at her first group meeting, not knowing what to expect, but said the guidelines eased her anxiety and as people shared their stories, she felt better about sharing hers. “Knowing that the people there to help you were also parents whose children had died was a big deal for me,” as opposed to seeing a therapist who has the schooling background, but not the personal experience. “Being a bereaved parent is just … there’s no words.” Beak’s son, Nathan, who was turning 6 and having a hard time dealing with the death of his sister, joined the children’s bereavement group. Both he and his mom continued to attend their respective groups faithfully for two years. “[The counselors] were always open to having the kids talk if they wanted to, but they didn’t make them talk if they didn’t feel comfortable [with it],” she said. “Sometimes it helped just to listen to the other kids and know even if he didn’t feel like talking, it just felt good to know, ‘okay, they know what it’s like.’ I think [Hope] was a big part in helping him heal.” Peak, who is now a co-facilitator with her group, said counselors emphasize attending at least three support group meetings, not necessarily in a row, because each time can be different. “Of course, I jumped right in the next month because I felt a big need for it,” she said. “When we’re there
Benefits of participating in support groups may include:
l Feeling less lonely, isolated or judged l Gaining a sense of empowerment and control l Improving your coping skills and sense of adjustment l Talking openly and honestly about your feelings l Reducing distress, depression, anxiety or fatigue l Developing a clearer understanding of what to expect with your situation l Getting practical advice or information about treatment options
and we’re talking with each other, we can say whatever we feel. It’s definitely a place where you can just bare your whole heart and soul and you won’t be judged.” Diaz agreed that group settings should be given a chance: “Make your decision after you attend a couple sessions. A lot of times we tend to rationalize ourselves out of action and in these situations it’s very easy to isolate [yourself], to not do anything as opposed to going and then making a decision.” Coping with death by suicide Laura attended a support group created especially for those whose loved ones had died by suicide. Her son, who was 25 years old, died in April 2016. “I didn’t really know what to expect, I just knew I needed to go,” she said. “The first meeting I could hardly speak, I was so upset, but everybody was just so supportive and helpful and made me feel very welcome.” In fact, immediately following the meeting, one of the counselors met with
her briefly to set up private sessions, too. The benefits of each are unique. One-onone counseling allows you to process your pain and thoughts in greater detail, while the groups focus more on sharing experiences and coping strategies. “It is a true support to be with people who understand,” she said. “The fact that they have one for suicide is incredible because it’s a complicated grief. Everyone feels guilt. My counselor and the people in the group helped push me through this maternal guilt. I think parents especially, even if there is no reason for it, the guilt is just incredible. Unless you’ve been through this, it’s very, very hard to understand.” Hope for Bereaved offers its counseling sessions, both one-on-one and grief support groups, free-of-charge. The nonprofit relies solely on fundraising events and donations. “To have a service like this available to people from all walks of life — especially now with health insurance issues and the lack of mental health support — is an incredible gem,” Laura said. Peak agreed. “You really do try to reach out and find somewhere that you can be to kind of make sense of everything. You don’t always find that with your family and friends as much as they try. It’s really a wonderful organization. I’m [saddened by] what [founder] Therese [Schoeneck] (also a bereaved parent) had to go through to start it, but I’m so grateful that it’s there.” Hope for Bereaved’s 39th Annual Celebration of Hope Dinner will be held Friday, Nov. 10 at the Nicholas J. Pirro OnCenter Ballroom. Tickets are $125 per person. Proceeds support the nonprofit’s many core services that are provided at no charge to its clients. ‘Crucible’ closes this weekend in DeWitt
Ensemble cast simmers in CNY Playhouse’s version of the Arthur Miller classic By Russ Tarby An oddly unsettling scene unfolds in Act 1 of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” when a comatose 10-year-old suddenly rises on her bed and deliriously declares, “I saw you dance with the devil!” In the current CNY Playhouse production, actress Alexandra Dubaniewicz portrays the stricken Betty Parris, daughter of a haughty preacher, and her big blue eyes bulge as she makes her accusations. While Betty shrieks and squirms, her actions frighteningly foreshadow subsequent events. Betty’s pointing finger is soon joined by fingers pointed by the other girls who’d been caught after dark, frolicking in the forest, a sure sign of Satanism, or so it seemed in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony, circa 1690. The backstory takes a lurid turn when it’s revealed that the girls’ ringleader, the preacher’s niece, Abigail – as menacingly portrayed by Mia Degironimo – is the spurned lover of a married farmer. That man is John Proctor, played by one of the area’s most talented leading men, Ben Sills. That secret adultery ultimately leads Abigail to falsely accuse Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, of witchcraft. Actress Korrie Taylor excels as Elizabeth, a loving wife and helpmeet to her industrious husband, hurt by his dalliance with Abigail but willing to forgive. It’s a role that taxes emotions ranging from sympathy to anger to admiration. Miller originally named the play “Those Familiar Spirits” before titling it “The Crucible.” The word crucible is defined as a severe test or trial, or alternately as a container in which metals are subjected to high temperatures. Characters such as John Proctor, whose moral standards prevail in the face of death, symbolically refuse to sacrifice their principles or to falsely confess. The play was first staged in 1953 as an allegory for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities which was ostracizing alleged communists on flimsy evidence. Many were jailed simply for refusing to name other persons who had attended political meetings. Miller, who visited Massachusetts to research the 17th century witch trials, drew clear parallels between the Salem accusers and the Washington red-baiters. Helmed by award-winning choreographer and director Shannon Tompkins, this “Crucible” benefits from the experienced stagecraft of set designer Josh Taylor and costumer Harlow Kisselstein. Like the deft dance captain she is, Tompkins carefully blocked the large cast of 20, and she coaxed spellbinding performances from many. Sills and Taylor shine as the Proctors and Degironimo is perfect as the vengeful woman scorned. John Brackett gave us a self-important Reverend Parris, his high-pitched voice often trembling in paranoia. Keith Arlington portrays Giles Corey, a cantankerous old ally of Proctor’s, and the bald yet fully beard-

Actress Lauren Koss as servant girl Mary Warren and actor Simon Moody as Deputy Governor Danforth in a scene from the CNY Playhouse production of “The Crucible” running through Oct. 28, at the ShoppingTown Mall. ed Simon Moody plays an officious and autocratic Deputy Governor Danforth. Colleen Snow makes her presence felt as Rebecca Nurse although it’s a small role, and R. Bernard Ment as Francis Nurse, boldly declares, “The girls are frauds!” Abel Searor – most often seen behind his keyboard conducting dozens of local musicals – displays some fine acting chops here as the Rev. John Hale, an outside specialist in “curing” witchcraft. His character has the greatest arc of all as Searor shows him slowly retreating from his initial role as an accuser to self-appointed savior. Disillusioned with the abuses of the trials, by Act 4 he’s trying to save as many suspects as possible. One of the best performances of the play comes from a Fay-
etteville-Manlius High School senior, the precocious Lauren Koss, as the Proctor’s servant girl, Mary Warren. Koss’s Mary runs the gamut from cowering to crying to crowing like a banshee. She initially helps John Proctor, but later turns on him to save herself. Along the way, Koss shows she has the emotional depth necessary to create a complex character. Brava! “The Crucible,” produced by Kate Crawford, runs at 8 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26, 27 and 28, at CNY Playhouse, located near the Macy’s entrance at on the second level of ShoppingTown Mall, in DeWitt. Tickets cost $17 on Thursday and $20 on Friday and Saturday; cnyplayhouse.org; 315-885-8960.

Hospice is looking for CNY’s best doctor
The Anita Award was established at Hospice in 1998 by friends and family in memory of Anita Stockman. Its purpose is to heighten awareness of the importance of physician communication and support to patients and their families facing a life-threatening illness and to promote this understanding among physicians in training. This award is to be presented to a physician who is attentive to his/her patients, who communicates openly, honestly and sensitively, who respects patient decisions and remains actively
involved with the patient in his/her final journey. Nomination letters for the Anita Award are solicited from people in our community who have experienced personally responsive care from their physicians. Nominations can be sent, by Dec. 2, to Anita Award, Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool NY 13088 or to info@ hostpicecny.org. Included in the nomination should be your name and phone number and why you thiink this physician merits this award, which will be presented in January.
by Donna Newman If you’re looking for a dog who’s a couch potato, keep looking - BK’s not the dog for you. But if you want a dog full of energy and fun, a dog who’s playful and loves toys, a dog who’s loving and smart, look no further! Why BK? Because he’s handsome. Because he’s very trainable and food-motivated. Because he’s smart. Because he knows sit, shake, and can speak on command. But most of all, because he’s a happy guy who’s happiest when he’s with you. It’s hard to believe he’s 4 years old, because he’s so lanky and acts like a puppy. BK was a CNYSPCA Canine Ambassador at a recent event, and he did a great job. Meet BK for yourself and you’ll soon see what a special dog he is! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-4544479.
