K & G Lodge’s 18th annual All-Ladies Fishing Tournament will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps veterans dealing with physical or mental injuries, looking for employment or education assistance or needing help transitioning back into daily life or engaging with their families and communities. & G Lodge in Oswego will host its 18th annual All Ladies’ Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 30. Proceeds from this year’s “Fishing for Freedom” contest will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. “K & G Lodge and Fishing Charters is committed to supporting our nation’s wounded veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Courtney Gehrig of K & G Lodge. “The ‘Fishing for Freedom’ tournament directly supports the nonprofit’s programs and services that give our wounded warriors free access to mental and physical

health support, employment and education assistance, as well as a variety of other services.” The tournament begins with a mandatory captains’ meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 29 at the pavilion at K & G Lodge on county Route 1 in Oswego. The captain and at least one lady angler from each team must be present to discuss the rules of the tournament. Hot dogs and burgers will be served. Fishing begins with a shotgun start at 6 a.m. Saturday, June 30. All charters must leave from the Oswego Harbor with the start/ finish line located just outside the harbor walls. There are no

restrictions on where the boats can fish; however, they must be back inside the harbor walls by 12:30 p.m. sharp, with no exceptions. All participants must be lady anglers, aged 16 and above. Teams can be made up of two to four women and each boat is permitted one captain and one crew member. Everyone aboard the boat must have a valid New York state fishing license. Weigh-ins begin at 1 p.m. at Wrights Landing Marina’s picnic pavilion where pizza and soda will be served. Teams will be able to weigh in their six best fish. Scoring will be 10 points

per fish, plus the weight of the fish. Entry fee is $295 for each team. K & G Lodge offers discounted lodging rates for those participating in the event. “This is an event like no other here in Oswego,” said Gehrig. “The girls go out on the charters with experienced captains and learn valuable fishing tips; but they also have a lot of fun with a little healthy competition. Some of these women have been fishing with us for nearly 20 years, so there are some bragging rights involved too.” While this is only their second annual “Fishing for Free-

dom” contest to benefit WWP, K & G Lodge has offered an annual ladies-only fishing tournament for nearly two decades. In years past, proceeds from the event benefitted breast cancer treatment and research. Gehrig added that they are very fortunate to have good relationships with other local charter captains who will be participating along with their own charter boats, Top Gun, captained by Greg Gehrig, and Son of a Gun captained by Chad Gehrig. entral New York’s most rabid Yankees fans – of which there are thousands – will get in line for tickets at NBT Bank Stadium when the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders roll into town for four games against the Syracuse Chiefs this week. The Pennsylvania-based franchise is the top farm club of the New York Yankees. The RailRiders roster currently includes a handful of players who have contributed to the Yankees’ 2018 campaign in the American League East. On June 4, right-handed reliver Tommy Kahnle was sent to Scranton to work on improving both his velocity and his control. In eight games with the Bronx Bombers this season, Kahnle allowed 10 walks and 11 runs. Kahnle, 28, hails from nearby Latham, a suburb of Albany. A versatile infielder who blossomed in the Big Apple this spring – 25-yearold Venezuelan Ronald Alcides Torreyes – averaged .339 in 22 games this season with the parent club. But on May 26 Torreyes was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes Barre to make room for hard-hitting first baseman Greg Bird. Third baseman Brandon Drury played eight games for the Yanks this year before blurred vision and migraines forced him to leave in the middle of a game on April 6. Five weeks later, the 25-year-old Oregonian was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A. Shortstop Tyler Wade, 23, a native of Southern California, played 13 games with the parent club before being sent to Scranton on April 22. Last year he played 30 games with the big club Outfielder Billy McKinney played two games with the Yankees before banging his into the left-field wall on March 31, spraining his left shoulder. The Yanks sent the 23-year-old Texan back down to the RailRiders on May 25. Catcher Kyle Higashioka, 28, played

nine games for New York last season, but the Californian has yet to win a promotion this year. He’s struggling at the plate, posting a meager .197 batting average over his first 40 games. The hometown Chiefs, the top farm team of the Washington Nationals, have won 26 games and lost 28 as of June 5, good for fourth place in the International League North. On the same date, the RailRiders sat in the IL North basement with a record of 25 and 30.

The Syracuse Chiefs host the Scranton/Wilkes- Barre RailRiders at NBT Bank Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, June 14, and at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday June 15 and 16. The four-game series concludes at 1:05 p.m. Sunday, June 17. NBT Bank Stadium is located on the city’s North Side, next to the Regional Market, at 1 Tex Simone Drive. Advance-sale ticket prices range from $8 to $13 and there are $2 discounts for children 12 years old and younger as well as for seniors and military personnel. Fireworks & food

Every Thursday home game is Dollar Thursday when fans can enjoy $1 Hofmann hot dogs, $1 Coca-Cola products and $2 Coors, LaBatt, Saranac and 1911 products. Fireworks will follow the games on Friday and Saturday. And kids eat free Sunday at ballpark concession stands, and kids of all ages are invited to run the bases after the game that day.

All Chiefs games will be broadcast by WSKO-AM The Score 1260, with announcers Eric Gallanty and Mike Tricarico. The Score 1260 is a part of the Cumulus Radio Group.

Menorah Park Open Golf Tournament set for Aug. 15

Designated the “Double Chai” golf tournament, the Menorah Park Open, the oldest golf fundraiser in Syracuse, tees off for the 36th time on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Drumlins Country Club. A full day of golf, lunch and dinner from Pascale’s, local media celebrities, and a raffle and silent auction with a variety of gifts will highlight the day. “Last year we raised $35,000 and we’re shooting even higher this year,” said Mary Ellen Bloodgood, Menorah Park CEO. Proceeds from the event support Menorah Park’s continuum-of-care programs such as entertainment and special events for residents, keeps a van on the road that transports residents to community activities, and helps support Kosher meals on Wheels. “Every dollar raised helps to enhance our residents’ quality of life, who are our loved ones, friends and one day could be us,” Bloodgood said. The Menorah Park Open starts with lunch

at 11:30 a.m., followed by captain and crew golf at 12:30 p.m., an earlier starting time this year. A cocktail reception will be followed by an awards dinner. Media celebrities such as Doug Logan, program emcee, Niko Tamurian of CNY Central and “Voice of the Orange” Matt Park are scheduled to join the golfers on the course. A special preview of the Syracuse University football season will be given during the dinner program. A silent auction will feature great local gifts and everyone will have a chance to win a raffle prize. Foursomes and individual golfers are welcome, sponsorships are available, donations of goods for door prizes and the auction are encouraged, and all are welcome to attend the dinner.
