Celebrate National Arbor Day by planting trees Join the Arbor Day Foundation, get free trees
National Arbor Day is Friday, April 27, this year, and the Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for anyone to celebrate the annual tree-planting holiday. Join the Foundation in April and receive 10 free shade trees.
By joining the Foundation in April, new members receive the following trees: red oak, sugar maple, weeping willow, baldcypress, thornless honeylocust, pin oak, river birch, tuliptree, silver maple, and red maple. The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. “These trees provide shade in the summer and vibrant colors throughout
the fall,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Through the simple act of planting trees, one person can make a difference in helping to create a healthier and more beautiful planet for all of us to enjoy.” The trees will be shipped postpaid with enclosed planting instructions at the right time for planting in April or May.
The six- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Shade Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by April 30, or visit arborday.org/april.

Syracuse Chiefs start season with experienced pitchers, hot hitting prospects
MiLB.com/Potomac Nationals
Rookie first baseman José Marmolejos is one of 11 Syracuse Chiefs on the 40-man roster of the parent Washington Nationals. Last year the left-handed 25-year-old hit 14 home runs for the Harrisburg Senators. The Chiefs open their home season on Thursday, April 12, at NBT Bank Stadium against the Norfolk Tides.

By Russ Tarby
n their tenth and final year as the top minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Syracuse Chiefs include 11 players listed on the parent team’s 40-man roster. The Chiefs started their 2018 season last weekend in Moosic, Pa., with three games against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders followed by another series of three on the road against the Rochester Red Wings. The Chiefs’ home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at NBT Bank Stadium on the city’s North Side. Several of the Nationals’ mostvalued baseball players will get a shot in the Show this season but will spend most of their time honing their skills here in the Triple-A International League under the tu-
telage of manager Randy Knorr. Back in 2011 Knorr, a former major-league catcher, managed the Chiefs to a fourth-place finish with a record of 66 wins and 74 losses. Last season, the fourth managed by Billy Gardner Jr., the Chiefs finished sixth in the IL’s North Division with a dismal record of 54-87. This year, Knorr hopes to improve on that result. Starting pitchers such as righthanded youngsters Erick Fedde, Jaron Long and Austin Voth all showed promise here last year. And veteran hurlers like journeyman Edwin Jackson and lefty Tommy Milone return this season to post plenty of zeroes on the scoreboard. Relievers Wander Suero, Austin Adams and southpaw Bryan Harper are expected to shut down opposing batters in the late innings. Catching those talented twirlers will be the
Nationals’ backstop of the future, hard-hitting Pedro Severino and the only active Chiefs Wall of Famer ever, Colombian Jhonatan Solano. As to offense, Knorr’s lineup card will feature names such as former New York Mets third baseman Matt Reynolds, fleet-footed center fielder Rafael Bautista and slugging first baseman José Marmolejos who blasted 14 homers last summer for the Double-A Harrisburg Senators while averaging .288. Another talented Dominican, outfielder Victor Robles, is just 20 years old, but he batted a solid .324 for Harrisburg in 2017. Bayoubred speedster Andrew Stevenson returns to Syracuse this season as does Venezuelan shortstop Adrian Sanchez. Both Sanchez and Stevenson made their major-league debuts last season with Washington. Last year, the New York Mets
purchased the Chiefs and will begin fielding their top prospects here starting in April 2019.
The Tides roll in
The Chiefs host the Norfolk Tides – the top farm club of the Baltimore Orioles – at 2 p.m. Thursday April 12, and at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 13-15 before hosting the Indianapolis Indians at 6:35 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 16-17 and at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at NBT Bank Stadium, 1 Tex Simone Drive.
