Boypower celebrates 50 years World Heavyweight George Foreman to be featured at event The BIG EAST, National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Colgate University Athletics, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Boys and Girls Club. This year’s Honorees, Arnie and Libby Rubenstein, will be acknowledged and recognized for their diverse community involvement spanning over five decades. The Rubensteins have been long-time supporters of the Longhouse Council, Boy Scouts of America, and have been involved serving their community by supporting, in various capacities, the Jewish community, BOCES, Better Business Bureau, National Panel of Arbitrators, Upstate Hospital Foundation Board and Advocates Board at Upstate Medical University. Guest speaker Forman, who is best known for his career in the ring. turned pro in 1969, defeating Gregorio Peralta and George Chuvalo. In 1973, Foreman “dispatched” heavyweight Joe Frazier in just two rounds. He defended his title successfully twice against Jose “King” Roman and Ken Norton before losing the title to Muhammad Ali in “The Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974. Foreman went on to defeat others, (Joe Frazier and Scott LeDoux) before “dropping a 12-round decision to Jimmy Young” in 1977, after which Foreman retired from the ring to become an ordained minister. Foreman returned to the ring with wins over Dwight Qawi, Bert Cooper and Gerry Cooney. In 1994, Foreman defeated Michael Moorer to regain the heavyweight championship and subsequently retired from the ring with a 76-5 record in 1997. Tickets for the 50th Anniversary of Boypower are available for $250 per person. For more information visit cnyscouts.org or call 315-4630201.

Nation’s top IEA young equestrians head to Syracuse for finals

N

early 400 of the nation’s leading middle school and high school equestrians will converge on Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22, at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse to compete for top honors in Hunt Seat classes in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) National Finals. The student riders, in grades 6 through 12, will travel from across the United States to participate in the competition. Of the 1,560 high school and middle school teams from 10 zones across the country, nearly 200 will be represented

at this year’s event. Hunt Seat riders and teams competed at 628 horse shows during the 2017-18 school year. The teams and individuals that accumulated the highest number of points within IEA Regions competed at Regional Competitions; those winners went on to compete at Zone Finals and then those champions qualified for the National Finals. The riders who qualified for Nationals bested more than 13,700 youth-equestrians. Riders will compete in Hunt Seat Equitation classes, over fences and on the flat, throughout the weekend.

The format requires that riders compete in unfamiliar tack on unfamiliar mounts; therefore, they draw their horses the day of competition and enter the arena after a brief, if any, warm up. Judging the competition will be United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “R rated judges Naomi Blumenthal from Syracuse, New York and Jerome Michael Halbleib from Birmingham, Alabama. Complete live streaming of the 2018 IEA Hunt Seat National Finals will be available online and offered at no cost to viewers through the IEA website: www. rideiea.org.

“Because only a fraction of the IEA’s 13,700-plus riders qualify for the National Finals, it is important to provide real-time and archive viewing to the other riders, families, friends and supporters, said Myron Leff, IEA co-founder and COO. “We are pleased that the EPCO Group will once again provide the video so our diverse audience can enjoy the Finals competition. For a complete listing of information and schedule for the 2018 IEA Hunt Seat National Finals, visit: rideiea.org/ national-finals/files/2018-HS-NationalFinals-Prize-List.pdf.

CBA’s Olivia Moffa will celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday in style At the ESU-Syracuse Branch’s 30thShakespeare Competition at Syracuse Stage’s Archbold Theatre, winner Olivia Moffa presented “Shakespeare’s Sonnet 19 and a monologue by Miranda from “The Tempest. Her talent won her a trip to New York City’s Lincoln Center, April 23 (Shakespeare’s birthday), to participate in the National English-Speaking Union’s competition with nearly 60 other nationwide winners for a summer acting experience in London. Grace Stensland of Westhill High School won second place and Hannah Yorkey from Union Springs High School won third. Honorable mention was awarded to Ireland Fernandez-Cosgrove of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, Tyler Piper from Jordan-Elbridge High School and Benjamin Tan from Clinton High School. The purpose of the competition is to develop students’ understanding of Shakespeare and his universality, as well as to fur-

ther the worldwide ESU mission of fostering global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural activities for students, educators, and members. Thom Miller, Assistant Professor of Voice and Acting in Syracuse University’s Drama Department, conducted a workshop for Syracuse’s competition participants on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Competition judges were David Lowenstein, Bob Moss, and Holly Thuma. This year’s participants represent eighteen schools: Bishop Ludden – Margaret Galeazza; Jamesville-Dewitt – Rebecca Teitelbaum; C.W. Baker – Elinor C. Grage; Jordan-Elbridge – Tyler Piper; Camden – Emily Pitoniak; Lansing – Audrey Lyons; Cazenovia – Carter Williams; Marcellus – Sarah Schwalbe; Christian Brothers Academy –Olivia Moffa; Skaneateles – Meghan Wilmot; Cicero-North Syracuse – Lyndsay Tudman; Syracuse Academy of Science – Jada Williams; Clinton – Benjamin Tan; Tully
