Concert preview
Swing times three Micro Big Band headlines triple bill Monday
By Russ Tarby Syracuse alto saxophonist Mike Dubaniewicz is one of the busiest jazzmen in town. He performs with the CNY Jazz Orchestra, the Stock Market Swing Orchestra and sometimes sits in with the Salt City Collective. Dubaniewicz (pronounced DewBAN-o-wits) fronts his own quartet and occasionally performs with Syracuse native guitarist Jeff Barone. That Manhattan-based six stringer produced Mike’s debut solo disc, “Drive Time,” in 2009. As if making music isn’t enough, Mike books it and teaches it. He programs concerts at The Other Side in Utica as well as at the Rome Art & Community Center, and he instructs music students at Syracuse University and at SUNY Broome Community College. The saxman’s newest project – the Micro Big Band – makes its Salt City debut Monday evening, April 30, at CNY Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St., in downtown Syracuse. Two other big bands – the Stan Colella All-Stars and the University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble – will precede the Micro outfit with sets at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively. The Micro Big Band takes the stage at

8:30 p.m. Admission costs $10, or $3 for students with I.D. “The Micro Big Band is a 10piece, high-energy, mini-big band playing my arrangements,” Mike explains. “Plus we play some Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich type stuff too. It’s a really good concert jazz band featuring such local luminaries as Tom Brigandi, Joe Carello, Jeff Stockham, Dave Solazzo and Melissa Gardiner.” The MBB performs a combination of swing, groove-oriented funk and Latin selections, and may even cover a Count Basie tune or two. Dubaniewicz earned a doctorate at Eastman School of Music after receiving a master’s degree in jazz and commercial music from the Manhattan School of Music in 1997. Last year he conducted the NY State Band Directors Association High School Honor Jazz Ensemble at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool. Monday’s triple bill opens with a set by the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars conducted by Joe Carello. The All-Stars will be mentored by clinicians from the University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble. the All-Stars’ set, the U. of Michigan big band will perform under the direction of Ellen Rowe, an internationally known jazz pianist. Rowe is a trailblazer in jazz, the first female in the world named to chair a major university jazz department.
Meet Chico
By Donna Newman
Chico, you’re the man! This hefty hound came to the shelter when his family could no longer take care of him. Chico’s heart is as big as his barrel chest! He loves going for walks, he loves attention, and he loves affection. He’s about four years old and has been at the shelter since July of 2017. He’s easy-going and very smart. He loves to play, but he’s always ready for a good snuggle. He already knows sit, and when he’s excited he does a “happy dance!” Chico has a lot of personality and would make a great companion. Meet Chico for yourself and see what a special guy he is. For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

Onondaga Nation to honor Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud The Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center is pleased to announce a reception on Sunday, April 29, in which the Onondaga Nation will honor Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud for his commitment to raising awareness of our proud Haudenosaunee history and heritage. The reception will be from 5-8 p.m. at the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center in Liverpool. Since his inauguration in April 2014, Chancellor Syverud has worked steadfastly
to further enhance the University‘s long established relationship with the Haudenosaunee. Among other measures, he initiated the University‘s policy of opening public events with an acknowledgement of the Onondaga Nation—“the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands Syracuse University now stands.” The University also flies the Haudenosaunee flag on campus and honors the Haudenosaunee Promise, a scholarship for Native American students. sity established the scholarship program in gratitude and appreciation for the historical, political, and cultural legacies of the Haudenosaunee, and to honor the bond between the University and its indigenous neighbors. Chancellor Syverud has also been extremely supportive of the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center. The University played a major role in the development of the center and the academic collaboration that governs its mission. All proceeds from the reception will sup-
port the center’s educational programming and the restoration and stabilization of an exceptional three-panel ceramic masterwork by Mohawk artist Tammy Tarbell. The reception will include heavy hors d’oeuvres and a variety of non-alcoholic drinks. The Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center is located at 6680 Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at cnyhistory.org/syverud.
