Hits aplenty: Chiefs outfielder Caleb Ramsey is the picture of consistency By Russ Tarby

Last season, Syracuse Chiefs outfielder Caleb Ramsey games knocked out more than one hit in a team-high 26 games. Among Ramsey’s multi-hit outings were three fourhit games and four three-hit games. This month, the 27-year-old Texan had four consecutive multi-hit games while on a Pennsylvania road-trip, April 15-18, and two of those were three-hit games. Ramsey has been the picture of consistency for the Chiefs, hitting safely in each of the nine games he has played this season. In 31 at-bats he has drawn four walks and struck out just three times. On April 13, he stole a base against the Buffalo Bisons.

The Houston native – who began his pro career five years ago with the Auburn Doubledays – is near the top of the International League in hitting with a bold .484 average. Over his previous five years in the minor leagues, Ramsey has compiled a respectable .282 average and 17 home runs. After their first five games, the Syracuse Chiefs – managed by Bill Gardner Jr. – boasted a record of four wins and one loss, but they’d reverse those numbers over the following five games. As of April 19, Syracuse raised its record to 6-5. Despite the unfriendly treatment they got in the Quaker State, the Chiefs have more than 130 games left to play, and this team – the top farm club of the Washington

Nationals – has the right stuff to reclaim the North Division pennant which they won in 2014. The starting rotation – A.J. Cole, Aaron Laffey, Austin Voth and the two Taylors – Hill and Jordan – is solid as a rock. The bullpen features several live arms including those of Trevor Gott, Sammy Solis, Erik Davis, Matt Grace and Rafael Martin. The lineup blends speed and power as exemplified by future superstar Trea Turner. Other prime producers will be outfielders Brian Goodwin, Caleb Ramsey and Tony Campana, and 2015 IL All-Star infielder Jason Martinson, who has already cracked two homers this season. On April 19, Goodwin extended his hit-

ting streak to seven games, giving the center field prospect 13 hits in 39 bats so far. After a three-game series against the New York Yankees’ affiliate, the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre RailRiders last weekend, the Pawtucket Red Sox make their first appearance at NBT Bank Stadium for a four-game set starting at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29, and concluding with afternoon games over the weekend, at 1:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1. Fireworks by Pyrotecnico will follow Friday’s game. Contact Russ Tarby at russtarby@aol.

cnyspca pet of the week

tessa needs a home by Donna Newman Tessa is truly terrific! This small lab mix was found as a stray. She’s sweet, affectionate, mellow, good with kids seven and up – just an all-around nice dog. She walks great on a leash and she rides great in the car. She loves walks, she loves treats, but most of all, she just loves people. She’s really a sweet dog. She has the kindest face and the most trusting brown eyes. Recently, Tessa was a Canine Shelter Ambassador at the Crunch game, and she represented us admirably. She loves everyone she meets and everyone loves her. Come visit Tessa for yourself and see what a special dog she is. For more information about adopting Tessa, call 454-4479 ext.0 or visit cnyspca.org.

Crouse maternity ward earns recognition Has highest hepatitis B vaccination rate in Syracuse The Onondaga County Department of Health visited Crouse Hospital’s Kienzle Family Maternity Center recently to present a certificate of excellence to the hospital for its higher-than-average birth dosing rates to newborns to prevent hepatitis B, a serious infection that affects the liver and can result in chronic infection or death. In 2015, 99.1 percent of all babies born at Crouse were vaccinated against hepatitis B. Crouse has the highest hepatitis B vaccination rate among hospitals in Syracuse. Crouse is the largest provider of maternity care services in the region, delivering nearly 4,000 babies annually and caring for more than 1,000 premature and critically ill infants a year in its Baker Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Babies normally receive three doses of hepatitis B vaccine: the first dose within

12 hours after birth; a second dose at one to two months of age; and a third dose at six to 18 months of age. Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus. In 2013, about 19,764 people became infected with hepatitis B. Some people go on to develop chronic hepatitis B infection, which is more common among infants and children than among adults. People who are chronically infected can spread hepatitis B virus to others, even if they don’t look or feel sick. Routine hepatitis B vaccination was recommended for some U.S. adults and children beginning in 1982, and for all children in 1991. Since 1990, new hepatitis B infections among children and adolescents have dropped by more than 95 percent – and by 75 percent in other age groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vaccination gives long-term protection from hepatitis B infection, possibly lifelong.
