Dinosaurs to invade zoo Rosamond Gifford Zoo to feature ‘101 Days of Dinosaurs’ this summer
courtesy of Billings Productions
for months outdoors. Besides the popular T. Rex and Brachiosaurus, “Dinosaur Invasion” will include two adult Parasaurolophus with a nest and babies, the emu-like Citipati, and the armored dinosaur Edmontonia. Zoo Director Ted Fox said he was thrilled when the Friends offered to bring dinosaurs to the zoo. He said it presents opportunities for the zoo to talk about animals in its collection that share characteristics with dinosaurs, explore the link between dinosaurs and birds, and illuminate the zoo’s role in saving today’s endangered species from extinction. “It’s really fun to see and hear these huge robotic dinosaurs, and it’s also a great tool for connecting people with some of the animals they see here at the zoo,” Fox said. Friends of the Zoo plans to fill 101 Days of Dinosaurs with many educational opportunities, including guided tours and a visit from “Dr. Dino,” aka Chris DeLorey, the Director of Education for Florida’s Brevard Zoo and a well-known dinosaur expert. The zoo plans to kick off the exhibit on Friday, May 25, with a Grand Opening event, and the public may be able to watch the dinos being installed. The initial “unload” is scheduled for May 14. For more information on the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, visit rosamondgiffordzoo.org. Updates on the dinosaur exhibit will be posted on the zoo’s social media. A
gigantic exhibit of prehistoric proportions is coming to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo this summer. A dozen lifelike animatronic dinosaurs will populate the zoo’s Wildlife Trail and other outdoor areas from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, Friends of the Zoo President Janet Agostini announced. Zoo visitors will experience exciting encounters of the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous kind with 23-foot-long Baryonyx, 40-footlongTyrannosaurus Rex, and 20-foot-tall Brachiosaurus, among other creatures from the land before time. “We are so excited to be able to present “Dinosaur Invasion: 101 Days of Dinosaurs” to zoo guests for the entire summer,” Agostini said. “We have seen these dinosaurs at other zoos, and they are amazing. There’s something so compelling about encountering them outside in a natural setting that makes the experience very realistic.” The Friends of the Zoo worked with Texasbased Billings Productions, a leader in the design and production of lifelike, life-size animatronic dinosaurs, on the plan to turn zoo grounds into a dinosaur theme park for the summer. The dinosaurs’ “skin” is made from a special urethane compound that protects them against the elements, so they can be displayed

Dixie demon: Blair Crimmins updates New Orleans jazz for the 21st century By Russ Tarby When Atlanta-bred banjoman Blair Crimmins appears this Friday, April 6, at Homer’s Center for the Arts, he’ll perform a tune called “The March of The Hookers,” a backstreet fantasy fueled by a sip of gin and a sprinkling of honky tonk piano. In fact, Crimmins even named his band The Hookers.
The Hookers in Homer
Blair Crimmins and The Hookers will play post-modern trad-jazz at 8 p.m. Friday April 6, at Homer’s Center for the Arts, 72 S. Main St., in Homer. The talented songwriter started out in Atlanta, Georgia, determined to bring ragtime and 1920s-style Dixieland to new audiences. Now four years and five
hundred shows later, he has toured the country playing large venues and has opened for acts such as Mumford & Sons and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. A multi-instrumentalist and music academic, Crimmins writes songs and arrangements for a classic New Orleansstyle horn section -- trumpet, clarinet and trombone. While honoring his influences, Crimmins brings a dashing youthful vehemence to the music with rapid-fire lyrics and an audacious hair-tossing delivery. The band is solid, recalling fine players such as Pete Fountain and Louis Armstrong. Although the music echoes with generations past, Crimmins’ lyrics are
rooted in the present day, telling stories of an old soul living in modern times. Songs range from the swingin’ “You Gotta Sell Something” to the autobiographical “Demon Like Me” to the upbeat tuba workout “Old Man Cabbage.” Ticket prices for Friday’s show range from $5 to $20; call 607-749-4900, or tollfree 1-877-749-ARTS; center4art.org.
Jazz on Tap in Skan

Curry appear on May 6 and Jeff Stockham plays trumpet etc. on May 20. The series continues through June 24. Finger Lakes on Tap is located at 35 Fennell St., across from Tops supermarket in Skaneateles. Admission is free; 315-6859600; fingerlakesontap.com/.
JASS Jam April 11
The Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse will stage its next open jam session from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Syracuse Suds Factory, corner of South Clinton and Walton streets, Syracuse; jasscny.org; 315-652-0547. Admission is free, and all musicians and vocalists are invited to sit in. The following jam session is slated for Wednesday, June 13, also at Syracuse Suds Factory.

exercise vs. dieting S tatistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today’s children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago. As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while others insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say. Diet l Page B11
American Board of Dental Sleep and Medicine certifies local dentist By Jennifer Wing
David R. Pearce, DDS PC, recently became board certified with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM). In order to be a Diplomate, Dr. Pearce underwent a two-year process which included completing courses on sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea and craniofacial pain, receiving recommendations from sleep physicians in the community and passing a rigorous academic test. Dr. Pearce was also required to submit 15 thoroughly documented patient cases which track the entire process of helping patients
resolve their sleep concerns from start to finish and he spent numerous hours in medical sleep laboratories becoming familiar with overnight polysomnography. Dr. Pearce said being a Diplomate in the ABDSM, “shows commitment to the profession of helping people with sleep problems,” and added that he is constantly learning in order to keep up to date with the latest information in his field. “My team and I just got back from taking a four-day course in dental sleep medicine and craniofacial pain in Toronto,” he said. “There’s no resting on your laurels, and my team and I are continually learning and ex-
panding our knowledge.” Dr. Pearce also said that his treatment of each patient is a personalized process. “There are no two patients exactly alike, and therefore there are varying ways to help them,” he said. “We see people who initially come to us for different reasons, such as facial pain, headaches or neck and back pain but, in the process of learning about their symptoms and working with other physicians, it was determined that a sleep and/or breathing issue could be the underlying reason behind their problem.” Dr. Pearce said treatment of many of his patients is
truly, “a collaboration between the dental and medical specialties.” “Patients are referred to us by other physicians and in turn, we refer our patients to different specialists such as sleep physicians, ENTs, ostopathic physicians, cardiologists, pulmonologists, physical therapists and chiropractors, depending upon what their needs are.”

Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses
on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and wholegrain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time. But exercise should not be abandoned in favor of a low-calorie diet. Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, who runs one of the largest obesity clinics in Canada, says that weight loss occurs from what’s

The class is open to children between 3 and 5 years of age and will run through May 1. It will be taught by Bridget Langstaff, an experienced yoga instructor specializing in children’s yoga. “Starting yoga at an early age allows kids to get in-tune with their body and to respect its needs,” said Langstaff. “That’s the essence of yoga which means…” “Together,” Hannah Grabowsky, 5, said during a Kids Yoga class held in February. “I like yoga because it makes me healthy and strong,” she said. Canal clean sweep
The Penny Saver
SUDOKU
Beautify trails to celebrate Earth Day weekend The New York State Canal Corporation will partner with Parks and Trails New York for the 13th annual Canal Clean Sweep, which will bring together some 3,000 volunteers across the state to help beautify canal trails as New York prepares to celebrate the centennial of the state canal system. Most events will occur on Earth Day weekend, April 20-22. Groups fan out along the system to pick up tons of trash, clear brush and do landscaping. Last year, there were more than 100 clean-up events along the 524-mile canal corridor, which includes the Erie, Oswego, Champlain and Cayuga-Seneca canals. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the New York State Canal System, formerly known as the Barge Canal. “Canal Clean Sweep brought more than 150 groups and 3,000 volunteers to our magnificent canal and trail systems last year,” said Brian U. Stratton, Canal Corporation director. “As we celebrate a milestone season on the canals, we hope to see even greater participation, as we
volunteer with neighbors to improve the canal’s scenic and historic sites, for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.” The Erie Canalway Trail and the Champlain Canalway Trail will be completed by 2020 as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Empire State Trail initiative, which at 750 miles will be the longest multi-use recreational trail network in the U.S. The Erie Canalway Trail accommodates more than 1.5 million trips by pedestrians, bicyclists, and cross-country skiers annually. More than three-quarters of the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail from Albany to Buffalo is a dedicated off-road trail, much of it along the canal’s former towpath. To organize a Canal Clean Sweep event, or to find an existing event to volunteer at, go to the event finder map at ptny.org/events/canal-clean-sweep. For more information, contact Catherine Lamberson of Parks and Trails New York at clamberson@ptny.org or 518-434-1583.

High school students sought for Congressional Art Competition
U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today announced his office is now accepting entries for the annual Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition from high school students residing in New York’s 24th Congressional District. Each year, the House of Representatives hosts the Congressional Art Competition for students across the country. The winning piece of artwork from each Congressional District is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one full year. “Central New York is home to many talented artists and this competition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our local talent in the U.S. Capitol,” said U.S. Rep. John Katko. “Each year, we receive many diverse and unique entries and I look forward to seeing this year’s submissions.” Guidelines for submission are below: Artwork may be up to 26 inches wide by 26 inches tall by four inches thick, must
be two dimensional, be original in concept, design, and execution, must not weigh more than 15 pounds, and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. If you are a student or a teacher, and would like to learn more about the rules about what kind art work is accepted, click here. Accepted artwork includes paintings (including oil, acrylics and watercolor), drawings (including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers), collage (must be two dimensional), prints (including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints), mixed media, computer generated art, and photography. Artwork must be submitted with a completed copy of the competition release form to one of Rep. Katko’s district offices by April 19. What’s new at WonderWorks New exhibits, events inside Destiny’s amusement park for the mind
WonderWorks, the upside-down adventure inside Destiny USA, is putting itself at the forefront of STEAM education with tons of new exhibits for guests to experience in 2018. The indoor amusement park continuously adds new exhibits to inspire young minds and entertain families looking for something unique to enjoy together, but this recent addition of hands-on interactives is their most major installation yet. The newest exhibits are:
Google Moon and Google Mars: WonderWorks’ astrology and space room offers many ways to explore the planets. Using Google’s new 3D software, guests can get up close and personal studying the Moon and planet Mars. Doodle Board: With the recent addition of the arts added to STEAM education standards, has added even more artistic components to this backlit drawing board. Titanic: Combine famous events and science with this real-life recreation of history’s most famous ship. Learn about the timeline of the ship’s sinking, experience the challenges of standing on a deck 110 after impact and brave the frigid water
temperatures experienced by Titanic passengers during the event. Interactive Sandbox: Explorers will experience land, sea and safari in this futuristic exhibit. Guests hold the power to manipulate sand to produce unique environments reflected electronically over top of their sandy creations. Using light projections, each hand motion and sand movement will produce unique environments for guests to explore. Fiddles the Frog: This exhibit, friendly for small children, explains the anatomy of a frog’s vision and allows guests to see life in the eyes of these reptiles. 2D and 4D Theatre: Two brand new experiences have been added to the Won-
derWorks theatre: A thrilling dinosaur adventure takes guests on a ride through the Jurassic period, and the Wild West is a comedic time-period journey where guests will laugh hysterically on a thrill ride through the old west. Coming Soon: An exciting exhibit that features innovative technology and showcases WonderWorks as it has never been seen before. “It is really important for us to stay current as an attraction and in a time where science education is accessible in so many ways and being explored more than ever,” said Nicole Montgomery, director of operations at WonderWorks Destiny. “We New features l Page B20

Sweet Science Series
Power Engineering: Wind Energy Industry to be discussed
P
rofessor Tomislav Bujanovic, assistant professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University, will present Power Engineering: Wind Energy Industry as part of the Technology Alliance of Central New York’s 2017-2018 Sweet Science Series from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, inthe Space Gallery meeting room at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse’s Armory Square. Many renewable energy sources are under investigation, but the wind and solar energy are the most abundant and in the focus of current research. The Reforming the Energy Vision program of New York state (2014) outlines a strategy to reach the
goal of having 50 percent of the electric power by renewable energy resources by the year 2030. In this talk energy sources will be compared in terms of the existing technology efficiency and sustainability and then electricity from renewables will be discussed. Although one of the most developed and promising, wind energy harnessing still brings many challenges, such as wind availability and forecasting, requiring careful consideration of wind farm market and incentives, permits and economic impact. In additionsome engineering construction, and maintenance challenges and solutions will be reviewed, including wind farm weather radar interference, sound pollution, and bird conservancy, as well as some
specific state code requirements regarding snow, earthquakes and hurricanes. The event is free and open to the public and light snacks will be served. Walkins are welcome, but it is requested that people RSVP by emailing sweet.science@ tacny.org by April 10. Bujanovic completed his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. His current research deals with methodology for the development of sustainable microgrid infrastructure with distributed generation including difficult-to-predict renewable energy sources (survey of existing assets, economic feasibility study, technical feasibility study, microgrid design and predeployment parameter validation, on-site commissioning, post-deployment metrics
validation); microgrid stability and protection challenges (synchrophasor technology implementation for real time monitoring and control, protection schemes coordination with distributed generation, merging challenges of monitoring and protection infrastructure).
Sweet Science Series
The Sweet Science Series began in 1913 as a gathering of inventors, business leaders, and technologists to discuss the latest topics. TACNY continues the tradition by partnering with the Museum of Science and Technology to host discussions of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) topics aimed at adults. All Sweet Science events are free and open to the public.

Central New York Playhouse to present ‘Chess’ April 13-28
C
entral New York Playhouse will feature its production of “Chess” April 13-28, with showtimes at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays. CNY Playhouse is located in ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt. “Chess” is a musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, and with lyrics by Tim Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two men-an American grandmaster
and a Soviet grandmaster-and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. “Chess” was a significant and powerful piece of music theater for its time as it allegorically reflected the Cold War tensions present in the 1980s, with the show embodying the government manipulations and paranoia, and the xenophobic attitudes present in the political climate of the time. The musical has been referred to as a metaphor for the whole Cold War, with the in-
sinuation being made that the Cold War is itself a manipulative game. Released and staged at the height of the strong anti-communist agenda that came to be known as the ‘Reagan Doctrine,” Chess played a powerful role in addressing and satirizing the hostile political atmosphere of the 1980s. For more information about this show including ticket sales, visit cnyplayhouse.org, or call 315-885-8960 to make reservations. Submitted photo
