Boat show returns to cny Inflate-A-Fleet exhibit featured
N
ew York Sea Grant is bringing its InflateA-Fleet Feb. 15-18 to the 2018 Central New York Boat Show, sponsored by the Boating Industry Association of Upstate New Yirj at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The traveling exhibit that debuted in New York City in 2017 consists of assorted inflatable and folding vessels, including a boat, kayak, and backpack paddleboard. These unusual vessels are the educational tools for the 2018 New York Sea Grant Discover Clean and Safe Boating campaign with a “Get Out on the Water: Everyone Can Enjoy Boating” theme. “Every year we select a different style of boat to showcase the diverse ways to enjoy the fabulous waters of New York State and to teach how to be safe, in compliance with boating law, and environmentallyfriendly on the water,” says Discover Clean and Safe Boating campaign creator
and award-winning boating educator Dave White, a Great Lakes coastal recreation and tourism specialist with New York Sea Grant, Oswego, NY. White notes that the unique Inflate-A-Fleet components are considered boating vessels subject to applicable boating laws and standards. Discover Clean and Safe Boating activities at the 2018 show include a 15-minute introduction to the “Suddenly In Command” training offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and New York Sea Grant aboard a pontoon boat in the Oneida Lake Marina Booth E-21 in the Exhibit Center building on Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The introduction covers the key points of the training designed to help a passenger who is not a boater manage the boat in the event of an unexpected emergency on the water. The Great Shipwrecks of New York’s Great Lakes exhibit will be on display at Booth H-14 in the Horticulture Building. New York Sea Grant developed the exhibit highlighting details about historic shipwrecks in wa-
ters across New York State. New York Sea Grant has received New York State, National Association of Boating Law Administrators and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary awards for the Discover Clean and Safe Boating campaign. The Central New York Boat Show features more than 500 boats; water recreation equipment; marine accessories; and waterfront destinations, tourism organizations, and law enforcement agencies in three buildings at the NYS Fairgrounds. Show hours are 1-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. Show admission is $10 per person, 13 and younger free. Free parking and shuttle are provided. Learn more at cnyboatshow.com. New York Sea Grant is a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York, and one of 33 universitybased programs under the National Sea Grant College Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Tunisia,” Thelonious Monk’s “In Walked Bud” and Eddie Jefferson’s “Lester Leaps In.” Formerly the frontman for such groups as Cabo Frio, Atlas Linen Co. and Prime Time Funk, Leigh now teaches voice at area colleges and often works as a solo act accompanying himself on keyboards or in a duo with octogenarian guitarist Marcus Curry. An Albany native and five-time Syracuse Area Music Award-winner, Leigh has recorded with Cabo Frio on Zebra/MCA records and with Larry Arlotta on Spirit Jazz. Leigh’s newest CD, “Live at AppleJazz,” was released in 2012. Marcus Curry grew up in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but in the early-1950s the guiarist moved to Syracuse with his two older brothers who exceled on drums and electric bass. After five years in the U.S. Air Force in Europe, Curry returned to the Salt City where he landed a gig at the Penguin Club. Later he joined the Chris Powell Trio and toured with Young-Holt Unlimited well known for the hit “Soulful Strut.”
hortly after World War II, jazz changed forever. Be-bop blossomed as a “musician’s music” which rejected the dance-oriented swing tunes of the 1930s in favor of a revolutionary style of jazz characterized by rapid tempos, complex chord progressions, key changes and plenty of improvisation incorporating scales, harmonies and occasional nods to the melody. Two of Central New York’s most respected jazzmen – guitarist Marcus Curry and vocalist Ronnie Leigh – will perform a free concert of be-bop tunes at Liverpool Public Library, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18. The performance is part of the library’s third annual Origins of Jazz Series cosponsored by the Liverpool Is The Place Committee with support from a state grant administered by CNY Arts. The library is located at 310 Tulip St., in the village of Liverpool, at the corner of Second Street (Route 370); lpl.org; 4570310. Leigh and Curry will play be-bop standards such as Dizzy Gillespie’s “Night in

Goal is to raise awareness of women’s No. 1 killer

C
entral New York is celebrating National Wear Red Day today to help raise awareness and funds to fight the number one killer of women – cardiovascular disease. Hundreds of Syracuse-area businesses, community groups, hospitals, towns, and schools are wearing red, going red, and glowing red on February 2nd to help spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. In Syracuse, representatives from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) joined with the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County to celebrate National Wear Red Day. Go Red For Women Chairwoman Evelyn Carter, of Wegmans, talked about the impact of the Go Red For Women campaign to educate women about their greatest health threat. AHA/ASA advisory board member Dr. Uzma Iqbal, cardiologist with SJH Cardiology Associates, shared important risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack. The Onondaga County Executive’s office proclaimed Friday, Feb. 2 as National Wear Red Day in the county. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced a special event for the Clinton Square Ice Rink. Skaters wearing visible red received $2 off adult admission and $1 off child and senior admission at the rink that Friday-Sunday. Across Central New York, thousands of people participated in National Wear Red Day. In exchange for a $5 donation to the Go Red For Women campaign, they received a red dress pin or wristband, and lifesaving heart health education. Some organizations offered heart-healthy lunch and learn programs, organized healthy walks or hosted other events. Additionally, several landmarks and buildings were illuminated in red to help raise awareness to women’s heart health. Eleven buildings and landmarks around the Syracuse area were lit up in red or displayed red decorations to help spread this important message in honor of National Wear Red Day. Those buildings included Barclay
Damon Tower, Clinton Square Ice Rink, Crouse Hospital, KeyBank, Loretto, National Grid, Onondaga Community College, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, Syracuse University, Hall of Languages and Hendrick’s Chapel and the VA Hospital. Cardiovascular diseases kill about one woman every 80 seconds, but the good news is about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented. National Wear Red Day is a reminder to take care of your heart and learn your family history. It’s important to understand risk factors that you can control, such as blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and lack of regular physical activity, and some you can’t control like age, gender and family history. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss all risk factors, including the five numbers that can change your life – total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Go Red For Women, nationally sponsored by Macy’s and CVS Health, inspires women to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities and shape policies to save lives. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. According to the American Heart Association, about 293 fewer women in the U.S. die from heart disease and stroke each day thanks to community outreach and education efforts. United, we are working to improve the health of all women. For more information on National Wear Red Day visit GoRedForWomen. org/WearRedDay.

Society for New Music presents concert Friday
A
ll four works in “Many Worlds” reference nature and humanity’s relation to it. Set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, the fifth concert in the Society for New Music’s winter season brings hotoff-the-press music to life at Park Central Presbyterian, 504 E Fayette St, Syracuse. The program features two Society for New Music (SNM)-commissioned composers and two of SNM’s Israel winners. Opening the show is Cornell Professor Kevin Ernste’s 2016 “Interregnum,” as part of the U.S. National Park Service’s Centenary. Its premiere performances were in situ: the caves, on the meadows, and atop the mountain peaks that make up our great national treasures. In “Interregnum,” Ernste writes music for traditional instruments (representing the human contribution), alongside ‘nested’ music for bowls of water (representing nature’s contributions). New York Federation of Music Clubs Israel winner, Simon Frisch, a Breton composer, will travel to Syracuse for his string quartet “Provost,” 2016, which
he describes as a meditation on transcendence. It was inspired by Renaissance painter Jan Provost’s striking painting, “égorie chrétienne,” a serene allegorical depiction of the soul’s redemption. That quality is reflected musically by the composer in this four-movement quartet. Frisch is on the Music Advancement Program faculty at Juilliard, having recently earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music at that school. Alex Burtzos, a previous Israel winner, will hear the second performance of his “Many Worlds,” setting poems by Jonathan Aprea. “Many Worlds” is an of quantum physics argues that, whenever an outcome is observed, reality itself splits into multiple branches, each fork representing a different possible result realized. Burtzos teaches composition at Institute of Technology, and composition, musicianship, and songwriting at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Aprea’s work has appeared in Prelude Magazine, the Atlas Review, Metatron and elsewhere. A recent graduate of Syracuse
University’s Creative Writing Program, he currently lives in Philadelphia. You can find him on the web at jonathanaprea. com. Rounding out this program of music from this past year and a half is the second performanceof SNM’s 2016-17 commissioned composer Stephen Ferre’s“Labyrinth,” which will be recorded prior to the concert. (SNM’s most recent CD of music by commissioned composers won a SAMMY and was nominated for a Grammy.) Ferre taught for several years at Syracuse University Setnor School of Music before heading to Univ. of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music a year ago for a teaching position. The Society All-Stars for this concert are: Peter Rovit, Sonya Williams, Josh Lohner, Gregory Wood, Kelly Covert, John Friedrichs, John Raschella, Julie Bridge, Heather Buchman, Sar Shalom Strong, Rob Bridge and tenor Dan Fields. Tickets will be available via PayPal on the Society’s website, societyfornewmusic.org, at the door the evening of the concert or by calling 315-251-1151.
