‘The Bridges of Madison County’ comes to CNY stage Appleseed Productions is offering “The Bridges of Madison County. The show is directed by Tina Lee and stars CNY superstars Aubry Panek and Jason Bean. Panek also owns and operates the local candle shop Witty Wicks in the village of Camillus. Based on the best-selling novel, and developed by the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning creative team of Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman, The Bridges of Madison County captures the lyrical expanse of America’s heartland along with the yearning entangled in the eternal question “What if...? Winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Score and Orchestrations, this sweeping romance about the roads we travel, the doors we open

and the bridges we dare to cross will leave audiences breathless. Francesca Johnson, a beautiful Italian woman who married an American soldier to flee war-ravaged Italy, looks forward to a rare four days alone on her Iowa farm when her family heads to the 1965 State Fair. When ruggedly handsome, National Geographic photographer, Robert Kincaid, pulls into her driveway seeking directions, though, what happens in those four days may very well alter the course of Francesca’s life. With a soaring score and a heartbreaking story, The Bridges of Madison County is a touching and powerful addition to any theatre’s season. The tour de force roles of Francesca and Robert are a dream come true for

any actor, while the ensemble is rich with characters that tell their own individual stories and receive plenty of focus on stage. The show runs for seven performances March 9 through 24 at Appleseed Productions, 116 W Glen Ave, Syracuse. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 18. CNY Arts scholarships up to $3k available for gifted art students

Since 2015, CNY Arts has administered The Senator John A. DeFrancisco Young Artist Scholarship Program which provides competitive scholarships up to $3,000 for students in grades 7-12 to support their continued arts education through classes and summer programs. Since the program’s inception, more than 110 applicants have been awarded grants totaling over $170,000 to participate in various arts programs across CNY and the state. For 2018, Senator DeFrancisco has secured $100,000 for the Young Artist Pro-

gram through the New York State Council on the Arts. The program supports young musicians, dancers, actors, writers and visual artists in their artistic development by giving some financial assistance in Advanced, Ongoing Study or Summer Intensive Programs. Funding is to be used to further the education of young, gifted students who are already in training and to benefit beginning students by increasing their exposure. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate a definite talent and at least

three years of experience in an artistic discipline, among other eligibility requirements. Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled in grades 7-12 and be a permanent resident within the 50th New York State Senate District . The application form is available through cnyarts.org and includes a young artist applicant letter, a recommendation letter from an arts teacher, mentor or advisor, a student resume and optional materials such as a parent/guardian letter and work-related samples. The maximum

scholarship award is $3,000. New applicants and previous applicants that have not received a scholarship are encouraged to apply. The deadline for the first round is by 4 p.m. Thursday, March 15. Should funds be available, a second round of funding may be offered. To view the application guidelines and to apply for the Young Artist scholarship, visit cnyarts.org/grants/senator-defrancisco-young-artist-program/. Crouse Hospital’s Pomeroy College Of Nursing, Le Moyne College expand partnership The Pomeroy College of Nursing at Crouse Hospital (PCON) and Le Moyne College have announced that beginning this fall, general education courses PCON nursing students are required to take will be offered through Le Moyne College and taught by their faculty on the PCON campus. PCON Associate Dean Patty Morgan states the new partnership will enable PCON students enrolled in academic courses delivered by Le Moyne to have access to all student services at the college, including libraries, computing facilities,

career services, student support and recreational facilities. Morgan also emphasizes that the new partnership coincides with the recent signing by Governor Andrew Cuomo of legislation requiring each nurse in New York State to earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree within 10 years of becoming an RN. “We are endeavoring to make it as seamless as possible for our students to complete their RN degrees and transition into a high quality BSN program. Completing the RN degree and passing the NCLEX-RN exam is required before

a BSN program can be pursued. PCON students who sat for the exam during 2017 had a 100 percent pass rate on the first try, according to Morgan. “We are pleased to have been selected to provide general education courses to PCON students, said Margaret Wells, Ph.D., R.N., APN- BC, interim dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies. “This new development is a natural progression in the educational partnership we’ve established with the Pomeroy College of Nursing. The advantage to PCON students is the close working relationship

we’ve developed with the administration and faculty at Crouse, which has been instrumental in understanding and responding to the needs of their students. While the per-credit hour charge of general education courses offered by PCON will increase slightly, the partnership with Le Moyne will enhance the overall experience and quality of the college investment. “The bottom-line financing of a PCON/ LMC education is still less expensive than other local, state and national nursing programs, said Morgan.

Awards show preview

Trophy time!

ixty nominees will vie for 2018 Syracuse Area Music Awards being bestowed starting at 7 p.m., Friday, March 2, at the Palace Theater, in Eastwood. One of the nominees for the trio, E.S.P., whose “Zero Gravity” disc is up for best jazz recording. If bandleader/bassist Matt Vacanti and the boys take home the trophy, it will be their third Sammy win in eight years. E.S.P.’s debut disc, “Time’s Up!,” deservedly won a 2010 Sammy and the following year they won another for “Reach,” produced by Yellowjackets bassist Jimmy Haslip. This year, however, E.S.P. has some stiff competition in the form of bassist Peter Allen, guitarist Tim Herron and drummer Bob Holz. Five dozen nominees were named in 14 different recording categories as determined by the Area Music Awards Judges Committee. That panel headed by Syracuse University instructor James Abbott also decides on each winner. The categories range from Best Blues to Best Electronica, from best Americana to Best Jam Band, from Best R&B to Best Hip-Hop. The Brian Bourke Award for Best New

That funkified quintet – popular on the Thruway circuit in the ealy-1970s -- featured Howie Bartolo (vocals, sax, flute), Rick Cua (bass, vocals), Dave Hanlon (drums), Larry Serafini (guitar, vocals) and the late keyboardist Larry Arlotta. Tickets cost $20 for the awards show, available at Sound Garden and SyracuseAreaMusic.com. On the evening before the awards show, the Sammys Hall of Fame will induct Dove, songwriter John Cadley, tour manager Maryjo Spillane and concert promoter Stacey Waterman at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 1, Upstairs at the Dinosaur Bar-BQue, 246 W. Willow St., downtown. At that ceremony, the Sammys will also recognize saxophonist Monk Rowe as educator of the year and radio host Dave Frisina as a lifetime achiever. It costs $25 to attend the hall of fame event, which includes dinner. “We’re really excited about this year’s inductions,” said Sammys Chairperson Liz Nowak. “We have a really good crew and it’s really diverse.”

He keeps the cost of the tap classes to a minimum and donates the proceeds to the JCC of Syracuse. Shulman received the JCC’s Kovod Gadol award in 2013 for his extraordinary commitment, energy and loyalty to the center. For more information about the classes call 315-234-4522 or visit jccsyr.org.

Barry Shulman, local attorney and choreographer, will once again teach the classes. He teaches “New York City” style. Students do not need to commit to every class and can attend as much as they’d like. “We’re excited to have Barry back with us teaching tap again this spring,” said Patrick Scott, JCC sports and fitness director. “He’s an excellent teacher and makes the classes lively and entertaining. Montezuma to hold 12th Annual Wildlife Festival May 5 The Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC), located on State Route 89, Savannah, will hold its 12th Annual Wildlife Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. The festival will celebrate the importance of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex for 300 bird species that migrate along the Atlantic Flyway. “The Montezuma Wetlands Complex is a globally significant Important Bird Area that serves as a vital rest stop for hundreds of thousands of water-

fowl during the spring and autumn migration. Additionally, the Complex is home to nine active Bald Eagle nests and an astounding 81 Bald Eagles during the winter months,” said Chris Lajewski, Montezuma Audubon Center Director. “The Wildlife Festival is an opportunity for people of all ages to explore and celebrate the birds and habitats of this dynamic ecosystem and interact with a variety of vendors from across New York state.” Highlights at the festival will

be live animal presentations, food trucks, a Eurobungy ride, live music, children’s games and prizes, a huge bounce house, crafts and activities, familyfriendly entertainment, guided bird watching hikes and canoeing excursions, a native plant sale and more than 40 vendors. For more information visit ny.audubon.org/montezuma. Birds of prey and other wildlife will be on display at the 12th Annual Wildlife Festival. Paul Schnell

WCNY announces Makers: Women Who Make America honorees; registration deadline for ceremony approaches

WCNY recently announced the honorees of its Sixth Annual Makers: Women Who Make America. These 10 women will be honored at the March 8 award ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. in the Wesleyan Chapel of the Women’s Rights Historical Park in Seneca Falls. The ceremony is free and open to the public; a post-ceremony luncheon will follow. Registration, by March 2, for either or both of the events can be made at: wcny.org/events. The Makers Awards celebrate the achievements of Central New York women and inspire others to follow their examples. This year’s ceremony is being held on International Women’s Day. The awards are sponsored by the Lockheed Martin Employees’

Federated Fund with support from the National Park Service. The post-ceremony lunch, open to the public by reservation, will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the ballroom at the historic Gould Hotel at 108 Fall St in Seneca Falls. There will be a champagne toast to award winners, a lunch complete with dessert and giveaways, and guest speaker, Katie MacIntyre, all for just $20 per person. The lunch will conclude by 2 p.m. MacIntyre, assistant vice president - marketing officer at Generations Bank, is passionate about women’s rights. She serves on the Education Committee of the New York Cultural Heritage Tourism Network, has served as the race director for the Women’s Right

to Run 19k/5k in Seneca Falls that benefits the National Women’s Hall of Fame, is on the sculpture committee for Harriet Tubman in Auburn, and is a committee member of Women March in Seneca Falls. Katie’s latest venture is hosting a weekly podcast about gratitude. “WCNY is proud to showcase the contributions of women who are making Central New York a better place to live and work,” said Debbie Stack, WCNY senior director, education & community engagement. “And it is especially moving to honor these outstanding women in the very location where the nation’s first Women’s Rights Convention was held in 1848.”

The 2018 Makers are: Kerry Barnes - Barnes spends much of her free time making Quilts of Valor for veterans. She organizes sew days, contributes her own money for materials, and travels countless hours to present these very special tribute quilts to physically and psychologically wounded veterans in our region to honor their sacrifices and offer comfort. Juanita Holmes Bass - Holmes Bass has introduced many to classic American Soul Food at her White House Berries Inn, a nationally-recognized B&B and restaurant she opened in 1989 after restoring the historic VicHonorees
