pulitzer winner in CNY ‘August: Osage County’ to premiere at Empire Theatre

S

yracuse Shakespeare-In-The-Park will bring the Central New York premiere production of “August: Osage County” by Tracy Letts for five performances at the Empire Theatre at the New York State Fairgrounds. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 9, 10, 16 and 17 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11. The cast is led by SALT award winners Binaifer Dabu as Violet Weston and SImon Moody as Beverly Weston. The rest of the stellar cast includes: Barbara Fordham -Shannon Tompkins, Ivy Weston-Julia Berger, Karen Weston-Marguerite Mitchell, Bill Fordham-Tony Brown, Jean Fordham-Bella Calabria, Steve Heidebrecht-Basil Allen, Mattie Fae Aiken-Kassandra Melendez-Ramirez, Johnna Monevata-Kimberly Grader, Sheriff Deon Gilbeau- Jay Merante, “Little” Charles Aiken- Max Smith and Charlie Aiken-Ronnie Bell The powerful play written in 2007 was an award-winning movie subsequent to its debut at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and a very successful Broadway and National Theatre London run. The play won five Tony Awards including Best Play and ran for 648 performances in addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize. It has been compared to “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” by the late Edward Albee, in its tenacity and ferocity as it sheds many lights on one family, some comic, but mostly tragic. These insights and body blows resonate with families trying to recover from life’s twists and turns. How people change us and those we love as we deal with real and imagined problems like success and failure, love and hate and devotion and addiction are powerful forces that can color our existence now and in the future. Tickets are available at TicketLeap.com and more information is always available on our website, www.ssitp.org. Prices range from $20 for premium orchestra seats to $15 through $10 for mezzanine and balcony seats. Discounts on non-premium seats are available for seniors 62 and older, students and Syracuse University alumni, staff, students and faculty with ID. Free parking is available at the NYS Fair on a first come, first served basis. Look for the signs that say “August” to lead you to the theatre. From bottom, clockwise, Violet Weston (Binaifer Dabu), daughter Barbara Weston (Shannon Tompkins) and her daughter Jean (Bella Calabria) are looking for a fight in SSITP’s “August: Osage County” by Tracy Letts. Learn about Onondaga Lake’s fish population from renowned expert

Presentation followed by Audubon-led birding walk

T

he Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is hosting “Onondaga Lake: A Treasured Ecosystem Returning,” a presentation by renowned Onondaga Lake fisheries expert Neil Ringler, Ph.D., on Sunday, Feb. 25. The presentation will be held from 2-3 p.m. on the sixth-floor Skydeck of Destiny USA. Following the presentation, an Audubon naturalist will lead a birding walk from 3-4 p.m. along the Onondaga Creekwalk, a popular bald eagle viewing location.

Ringler has studied the Onondaga Lake fishery for more than 30 years and is a vice provost at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). He will discuss improvements at Onondaga Lake and nearby tributaries that are providing restored habitat for fish, birds, invertebrates, and plants, and how research and monitoring will continue to fuel improvements to the ecosystem. SUNY-ESF has been at the forefront

of Onondaga Lake research since the mid-1980s. During that time, researchers have seen a dramatic increase in the fish species living in the lake. Up to 64 species of fish have been recorded overall and about 40 species are identified each summer, including brown trout, lake sturgeon, and Atlantic salmon. Interested community members are asked to RSVP to Montezuma Audubon Center at Montezuma@audubon.org with the subject line “Onondaga Lake” or call 315-365-3588 by Feb. 16. Suggested donation is $5.

The event is hosted by the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps, an expanding organization of community volunteers who are contributing to restoration projects that are creating or improving wildlife habitat in the Onondaga Lake watershed.

Feb. 16 deadline for middle, high school studentsto register for CNY Innovation Challenge

The Second Annual Central New York Innovation Challenge will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 7 at Onondaga Community College’s Academic Building No. 2. The competition aims to spark ideas to develop groundbreaking products or services, encourage students to follow science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) educational paths and foster entrepreneurship. Teams will pitch their solutions in front of a panel of judges to win cash prizes. Teams must register at cnystem.com/innovation/ by Feb.16.

This competition gives students the opportunity to solve a challenging problem, network with industry professionals and improve presentation skills, while allowing business partners to build relationships with top local talent. Participants will choose a problem in one of the following areas and pitch their team’s creative solution: ✓ Create a product/service that would make your school life easier ✓ Develop a way for students to save time/ be more efficient

✓ Invent a way to increase understanding of various concepts taught in class ✓ And more (see website for complete details) Teams must have a minimum of two students and a maximum of four. The challenge is open to students in grades 6-12. There will be winners in two brackets: High school (grades 10-12 – top prize $1,000) and middle school (grades 6-9 – top prize $500.) Full rules can be found at cnystem.com/innovation/ rules.html. Opportunities like the CNY Innovation

Challenge are important for regional youth because according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Department of Labor, much of the growth in the domestic and global economy will come from STEM-related jobs – a highly lucrative and competitive field. It is estimated by 2020 there will be 2.4 million unfilled STEM jobs, underscoring the importance of providing the youth the tools and skills necessary to compete in the growing innovation economy. For more information visit cnystem.com/ innovation/.

Kids’ basketball clinic starts Feb. 11

How cool would it be to shoot hoops and improve your game with the help of Lawrence Moten, the all-time leading scorer of Syracuse University men’s basketball? Well, here’s your chance. The “Poetry in Moten” Skills ‘N Drills basketball clinic is a five-week coed elite training program run by coach Moten and former SU women’s basketball star Tasha Harris. It will be held on Sundays from Feb. 11 through March 11 at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center’s Neulander Family Sports & Fitness Center, 5655 Thompson Road, DeWitt. There will be separate clinics for different age groups. The program for ages 9-12 will run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. while the program for teens ages 13-16 will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $125 and there is a $25 discount for JCC of Syracuse members. Moten’s basketball clinic is designed to enhance each player’s knowledge of the game through improved basketball and life skills. Important fundamentals such as the proper mechanics involved with shooting, dribbling, passing and footwork will all be stressed. “Understanding that each indi-

vidual has a role in a team concept, my goal is to teach players to become better students of the game,” said Moten. “All messaging will be positive and designed to encourage players to keep improving. I want to instill in each player the confidence to accomplish the goals he or she desires on the basketball court and in life.” As a player with Syracuse University men’s basketball from 1991-1995, Moten scored a total of 2,334 points making him the team’s all-time leading scorer. He is also the Big East’s all-time leading scorer in conference games with 1,338 points. After SU, Moten went on to play in the NBA and since then has coached boys and girls at all levels. His jersey will be retired by SU in March 2018. Tasha Harris played with SU from 2007-2011 and is the team’s all-time leader in games played and games started. The “Poetry in Moten” basketball clinic is sponsored by the JCC of Syracuse and SportsXpress. Vote on 2018 focus of City’s ‘i-team’ The City of Syracuse’s Office of Innovation, or “i-team,” is taking the next step to determine their focus area for 2018. After an initial round of online voting, six issues emerged as the most popular choices, from which the City is now asking residents to vote on their top picks using a new online platform that builds community engagement. “We’re constantly looking at how we can more easily and more effectively engage the community in our work,” said Adria Finch, director of the Office of Innovation. “My team is excited to test out a new platform, which fosters public participation and improves the decision-making process.” The i-team was formed in 2015 with a $1.35 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The team works closely with residents and city staff to design solutions with clear goals and rigorously measure progress. In the past, the team has focused on infrastructure, opportunity and housing. Kicking off his new term, Mayor Walsh and the i-team are asking for public input to select the priority area.

Voting began last week at Mayor Ben Walsh’s State of the City address and will continue until Feb. 14. Individuals can cast two votes in favor of potential priority areas and one vote against a potential priority area at innovatesyracuse.com/ vote. Paper ballots will also be available at libraries and community centers throughout the City, including Syracuse Northeast Community Center, Westcott Community Center, the Central Library, White Branch Library, Mundy Branch Library, Beauchamp Branch Library, Hazard Branch Library, Paine Branch Library and Petit Branch Library. The top topics that receive the most votes will go to the Mayor for final review. The community can expect a decision by the end of February. The six idea categories that voters can choose from are: ● Neighborhood beautification ● Sidewalk maintenance and snow removal ● Alternative transportation ● Neighborhood business districts ● Housing stability ● Sustainability and renewable energy

Dr. James MacKillop to present Irish Film Series at Jazz Central

The Jazz Central theater will resound with memories of Old Ireland when the 20th Anniversary edition of the Irish Film Series screens at downtown’s Jazz Central theater, presented by the CNY Chapter of the Irish-American Cultural Institute. Dr. James MacKillop will host the series and lead discussion sessions following each film. The weekly series will show films on successive Sundays, Feb. 11, 18 and 25, at 2 p.m. at Jazz Central, 441 E. Washington St. A per-film donation of $10 is suggested at the door.

Each film celebrates a different era in Ireland’s history. The first, “Odd Man Out” (1947), was the first winner of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award. A film noir starring James Mason and Kathleen Ryan, its plot entails a robbery gone horribly wrong, and a badly injured, abandoned, and increasingly delirious IRA leader’s attempts to escape from authorities. The next, “Dancing in Lughnasa” (1998), set in 1936 Donegal, is a period drama populated by a superstar cast including Meryl

Streep and Michael Gambon, based on the 1992 Tony Awardwinning Brian Friel play. A movie of remembrance, it explores themes of love and loss as told by its narrator, Michael Evans. The series finishes with “The Story of Ireland, Part 2 - The Age of Conquest.” Narrated by Fergal Keane, it charts Ireland’s progress through the upheavals of the Middle Ages. Series host MacKillop, a past president of the American Conference for Irish Studies, has hosted the Irish Film Series for

the past 20 years. He is the author of several widely-read books on Irish and Celtic topics, including “Contemporary Irish Cinema: From The Quiet Man to Dancing at Lughnasa,” “Myths and Legends of the Celts” and “Fionn mac Cumhaill: Celtic Myth in English Literature.” He reviews films and live performances as a contributing editor for the Syracuse New Times and is a 16-time winner of the Syracuse Press Club Award. The year was 2001 when two vintage snowmobile buddies Bill Monette and Joe Racheal decided to put on a vintage snowmobile show and race at the Oswego county fairgrounds in Sandy Creek.

The idea came about as a result of a long time show called The Eastern Ride-in held at Borio’s restaurant on Onieda Lake a regional event organized by the Vintage Snowmobile Club of America was moved to the Albany Area and then further into Massachusetts. The show and races went on at Sandy Creek until 2006 when the event moved to Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge under the Weedsport Wanderers snowmobile club, with Joe Racheal and Eric Melfi organizing the show and Dan Smith and Dan Kerr taking charge of the oval racing.

In 2010 the Whiteout was moved to the War Memorial in Fulton and the frozen surface of Lake Neahtawanta under the Fulton Area Snow Travelers snowmobile club, again with Rachael and Melfi organizing the event and Smith and Kerr doing the race. For last three years the show has been run by Jim Latino, Ken Wheelock and Tracy Doyle with the help of members of the Fulton Area Snow Travelers as well as friends and family members. This is a non-profit event with proceeds (net of expenses) going to a variety of local and regional recipients.
