a play of ‘biblical’ proportions ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ comes to Syracuse Feb. 9-11 Famous Artists brings the national tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, Feb. 9-11 to the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater in downtown Syracuse for three performances only. One of the most enduring shows of all time, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” is the irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. The first collaboration of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, “Joseph” blends pop, country and rock into an uplifting, technicolored story of biblical proportions. Tickets are on sale now at the Oncenter Box Office 435-2121, Famous Artists 4248210 and Ticketmaster 800-745-3000. For more information visit BroadwayInSyracuse.com. submitted photo

Crouse Hospital designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center
T
he American College of Radiology (ACR), recognized as the gold standard in medical imaging, has designated Crouse Hospital as a lung cancer screening center. The Crouse medical imaging team received the designation because of its demonstrated expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a set of technical specifications and completing onsite evaluations by a review team from ACR. “This designation affirms our commitment to providing most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services available in the region,” said Brad Hellwig, director of medical imaging at Crouse. In early 2015, Crouse launched its Lung Cancer Screening Pro-
gram to provide low-dose lung CT screening for current and former smokers at high risk for developing the disease. Finding lung cancer early, when it is most treatable, is the goal of this screening. Those wishing to receive a lung screening should consult first with a primary care physician, who will make the referral if appropriate. More information is available at crouse.org/ lungscreen. Lung cancer is the second leading type of cancer and represents 13 percent of all new cancer cases in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Approximately 400,000 patients in the United States have lung cancer. The goal of the ACR is to help facilities manage the lung cancer patient more efficiently.

Accreditation by the ACR helps assure patients that the highest level of image quality and safety is being provided. The
process documents that the facility meets requirements for equipment, medical personnel and quality assurance. Since 1987, the
ACR has accredited more than 38,000 facilities in 10 imaging modalities.

‘Sweeney Todd’ to be perfomed in Baldwinsville The Baldwinsville Theater Guild opens “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” on Jan. 22, featuring Benjamin E. Sills and Cathleen O’Brien Brown as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett respectively. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, and based on an adaptation by Christopher Bond, “Sweeney Todd” has both delighted and awed audiences around the world. “Sweeney Todd” tells the story of a barber who has returned to London
after 15 years in a penal colony. Working with his landlady, Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney plots his revenge upon the judge who falsely convicted him and destroyed his family. The gritty and dark musical meshes a masterful plot of thrills and unexpected turns together with a beautiful yet haunting score to create a musical experience unlike any other. BTG’s Sweeney Todd is presented at the Baldwins-
ville Presbyterian Church, 64 Oswego Street, Baldwinsville, NY, 13027 from Jan. 22 through Feb. 6. Performance times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $23 tickets in advance via credit card and $25 at the door. There is a $20 Senior Citizen discount for the Sunday matinee only. Tickets can purchased online at baldwinsvilletheatreguild.org or via phone at 877-8465.

Power outage and cold weather safety tips T
he nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) is offering 21 tips to keep families safe and warm when the power goes out and freezing temperatures arrive.
Stop pipes from freezing
1. Insulate pipes exposed to the elements or cold drafts with insulating foam. For as little as $1 per 6’ of insulation, you can stop pipes from freezing and save energy. 2. Place an insulating dome or other covering on outdoor faucets and spigots to reduce the likelihood of the water in your pipes freezing, expanding and causing a costly leak. 3. Drip faucets to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes. Even if the pipes freeze, you have released the pressure from the water system reducing the likelihood of a rupture. If you are going out of town, and suspect that temperatures will drop or a power outage will occur, turn off the water to your home and open all of the taps to drain the water system. This way you won’t return to a frozen, soggy mess. 4. Check for air leaks around windows and doors using a lit incense stick. If the smoke is sucked out of an opening, seal the leak with caulk, spray foam or weather stripping.
8. Keep your car fuel tank at least half full as gas stations rely on electricity to operate their pumps and may not have backup power. 9. Keep extra cash on hand since an extended power outage may prevent you from withdrawing money from ATMs or banks. 10. Be a volunteer snow angel. Volunteer to check on elderly neighbors, friends, or relatives who may need assistance during the outage. 11. Wear layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. 12. If you are using a gas heater or fireplace to stay warm, be sure the area is properly ventilated. 13. Arrange ahead of time with family, friends, or neighbors for a place to go if you have an extended outage. If you have nowhere to go, head to a designated public shelter. Text SHELTER +
your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345)
Food
14. Keep a supply of non-perishable foods, medicine, baby supplies, and pet food on hand, and have at least one gallon of water per person per day on hand. 15. Avoid opening the fridge or freezer. Food should be safe as long as the outage lasts no more than four hours.
Generators
16. Do not run a generator inside a home or garage. Use gas-powered generators only in well-ventilated areas. 17. Follow manufacturer’s instructions such as only connect individual appliances to portable generators. 18. Don’t plug emergency generators into electric outlets or hook them directly to your home’s electrical system as they can feed electricity back into the power lines, putting you and line workers in danger. 19. Consider purchasing and installing a permanent home generator with an automatic on switch.
When power returns
20. When power comes back on, it may come back with momentary “surges” or “spikes” that can damage equipment such as computers and motors in appliances like the air conditioner, refrigerator, washer or furnace. Be sure to install a system of surge protection that consists of point-of-use devices and whole house surge protection. 21. When power is restored, wait a few minutes before turning on major appliances to help eliminate potential problems caused from sharp increases in demand. For more information, tips and resources for winter safety visit Flash.org and the Great Winter Weather Prep preparedness campaign.
Keep safe and warm
5. Keep a supply of flashlights, batteries and a battery-powered radio on hand. Do not use candles as they pose a fire hazard. 6. After the power goes out, make sure to turn off all lights but one, to alert you when power resumes. 7. Resist the temptation to call 911 for information during power outages. Instead use your battery-powered radio for information.
