Phenom in flux B By Russ Tarby y any measure, the Jonathan Drouin story is highly unusual. In his second season in the National Hockey League with the Tampa Bay Lightning – the Syracuse Crunch parent club – the 20-year-old hockey star publicly asked to be traded from Tampa, a team that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Drouin was selected by the Lightning in the first round, third overall, of the June 2013 NHL Entry Draft, after he’d drawn the attention of scouts for his scoring prowess with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Mooseheads won the Canadian Hockey League’s coveted Memorial Cup, and Drouin was named the CHL’s Player of the Year. Frustrated this season by his lack of playing time and relatively low production for the Lightning, Drouin requested a trade in November, a move rarely made mid-season by players or agents. Instead of being traded, however, Drouin was unceremoniously demoted to the American
Hockey League on Jan. 2. Tampa Bay sent him to Syracuse, where he had played a few games in October 2014 before his NHL debut. After a few days’ doubt about his willingness to return to the minors, Drouin joined the Crunch Jan. 8, at the Times Union Center in Albany where he wasted no time at all making his presence felt. The crafty left winger scored two first-period goals. Unfortunately, Syracuse was overcome that night by the Albany Devils, 6-4. Drouin – a native of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains – has played two more games with the Crunch without recording another point. In the NHL this season, Drouin has suited up for 19 games, and scored two goals and six assists while drawing two minor penalties. At a press conference convened by the Crunch on Jan. 5, Drouin refused to talk about his trade request. “The only thing I can do is play hockey here,” he said. “It’s just how it is.” Crunch coach Rob Zettler hopes Drouin will

He’ll bring a lot of skill to our lineup.” Although characterized as “disgruntled,” by some Tampa Bay sportswriters, Drouin appeared genuinely humbled by his demotion. “I played my game up there,” he said at the press-

After the Jan. 8 loss in Albany, two spectacular performances by Crunch goaltenders led to victories Jan. 9 at home against the Hershey Bears and Jan. 10 in Rochester. Netminder Adam Wilcox stopped 28 of 30 shots to defeat Hershey
4-2, and goalie Kristers Gudlevskis turned away 28 of 29 shots to stifle the Amerks. The Crunch return home against the Hershey Bears – top farm club of the NHL’s Washington Capitals – at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, 800 S. pete Rose to headline Hot Stove MLB’s all-time hits leader will appear at Syracuse Chiefs mid-winter dinner Jan. 22 at Oncenter By Russ Tarby ete Rose never played in the International League, so he never took any swings at Syracuse’s MacArthur Stadium. But he’ll step up to the plate as the headliner of the 2016 Syracuse Chiefs Hot Stove Dinner, on the evening of Friday, Jan. 22, at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse. Doors will open at 4:45 p.m., with events scheduled until after 9 p.m. The 74-year-old Rose – the all-time major-league hits leader – played in the big leagues from 1963 to 1986, and managed from 1984 to 1989. In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility after being accused of gambling on baseball while playing for and managing the Cincinnati Reds. The issue of Rose’s possible reinstatement and election to the Baseball Hall of
P
Fame remains a contentious one throughout baseball. In 2015 Rose met with new baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred to plead his case, but on Dec. 14, Manfred declined to lift the lifetime ban. Besides Pete Rose, the Hot Stove Dinner will feature Chiefs manager Billy Gardner Jr., National League All-Star pitcher Jason Grilli – a native of Baldwinsville – and Texas native Ricky Hague, who made his Triple-A debut last season with the Chiefs. “The program is a little different this year,” said Chiefs General Manager Jason Smorol. “Our broadcaster, Kevin Brown, will host a sit-down interview session with the guests.” A silent auction of baseball memorabilia will be conducted from 4:45 to 8 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m., with guest speakers following at about 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the Hot Stove Dinner
cost $65 per adult and $30 per children ages 12 and younger. Groups can purchase tickets for a table of eight for $495 or a table of 10 for $625. In addition, 50 VIP tickets are available for an Autograph and Meet & Greet Session with Pete Rose, one of the best and best-known baseball players who ever lived. VIP tickets can be purchased for $200 apiece, in addition to the cost of a regular ticket for admission. Even though Rose never played here in Syracuse, he got his first professional experience 55 miles west of here with the 1960 Geneva Red Dogs in the Single-A NY-P League, whose home field was Shuron Park. The 19-year-old second baseman played there 56 years ago alongside future major-leaguers Tony Perez and Art Shamsky. Rose hit a respectable .277 that season with one home run, 43 RBI, 18 stolen bas-
es in 21 attempts, and 55 walks outnumbering 35 strikeouts. In his 24 years in the show, Rose earned the nickname “Charlie Hustle.” He became the all-time Major-League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215), and outs (10,328). He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B and 1B). Hot Stove tickets are on sale now. To purchase, fans can call 474-7833, visit syracusechiefs.com or stop by the NBT Bank Stadium ticket window during regular business hours. The Chiefs will open the 2016 IL season at home at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Tires matter during winter Be prepared when your car hits the ice this season In winter, it’s not just about the precipitation on the road. Tires get cold, too, and when they’re cold, all-season tires don’t perform to their full potential. In fact, in temperatures as cool as 45 degrees or below, the rubber in all-season tires gradually hardens, leading to decreased road traction and less grip, causing difficulty with braking and turning. Winter tire safety experts at Discount Tire urge drivers to consider their cold weather climate; if it is regularly below 45 degrees, it’s time for a set of winter tires to keep you and your family safe on the roads this year. Winter tires use specially engineered tread rubber with enhanced compound to add the extra grip needed in winter driving conditions that helps keep a car safely in motion without skidding off the road. This added grip provides 25 to 50 percent more traction in snow and ice than regular all-season tires. Tread design in winter tires also uses thousands of extra traction edges for exceptional grip
in cold weather driving conditions where ice, snow, slush and water may be present. What drivers may not realize is precipitation can ac-
tually pack in the larger grooves on all-season tires, leading to dangerous skidding and impaired braking.
Five tire and road safety tips for winter this year:
1. Replace your all-season tires with superior cold traction winter tires if you regularly drive in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. Make sure to replace all four tires to avoid an unsafe traction mismatch. 2. Don’t forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specifically for your set of winter tires will save money in the long run. They pay for themselves by eliminating the cost of changeovers at the beginning and end of the winter season, and by saving your expensive wheels from the wear and tear of ice, slush, snow and salt. 3. Check tire pressure regularly and don’t forget to check the spare. Underinflated or over-inflated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel consumption. For every 10 degrees change in temperature, tire air pressure changes 1 psi! 4. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. 5. Make sure your tire shop properly torques the lug nuts to the specifications for your vehicle when changing over to winter tires.

Red Cross offers tips for staying safe and warm this season With Lake Effect Snow Warnings and other weather advisories sometimes in effect across much of Central New York during the winter months, the Red Cross is offering the following safety tips to help people stay safer when severe weather threatens: · Prepare a winter-specific supply kit that includes a warm coat, hat, mittens or gloves, and water-resistant boots, along with extra blankets and extra warm clothing. Sand or non-clumping kitty litter is good to have on hand to help make walkways or steps less slippery. · Emergency supply kits should include a first aid kit

and essential medications, at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food and water, personal hygiene items, cell phone with chargers, copies of personal documents and emergency contact information, flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio and extra batteries. · Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information on snow storms and blizzards from the National Weather Service (NWS). · Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make
sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles. · Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing. · All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. · Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during periods of extreme cold. · Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

CNYSPCA pet of the week
Capone needs a home by Donna Newman
Capone is the “James Bond” of shelter dogs - think Sean Connery, not Daniel Craig! He’s dark, handsome and cool - very cool. Some may even say aloof. It’s not his fault. Capone was surrendered for adoption when his owners had landlord issues. At five years old, Capone lost his home and family, and the loss broke his heart. It takes a little time for Capone to trust you, but once he does, his true personality comes out. Capone is mellow, loyal, playful and curious. He loves walks, toys, kongs filled with peanut butter and snacks. He also likes other dogs. He would do great in a home with children seven years and older. Not many people want to take the time to get to know a dog; everybody wants an instant connection. But there’s something very special and sweet about earning the trust and affection of a reticent dog. Come to the shelter and meet Capone in person. Just don’t be surprised if this cool dog warms up and melts your heart! For more information about adopting Capone or other pets, call (315) 454-4479 or visit cnyspca.org.

Baldwinsville residents Steve Pfanenstiel and Mark Porter recently formed Open Season.
Lightfoot and John Denver. He has been playing guitar since the early 70’s and singing even longer. As a solo performer, he’s played at such venues as Beaver Lake’s Golden Harvest Festival, Thirsty Owl Winery and Owera Vineyards. Porter was born in Syracuse, but moved to New Orleans at the age of eight. He grew up there and fell in love with the food, the music and Mardi Gras! Mark moved back to Syracuse when he was 23 years old, went to OCC and SU, and ultimately became a social worker. The only thing that he loves more than music is his wife and son.
Steve Pfanenstiel and Mark Porter, both from Baldwinsville, formed Open Season earlier this year. They play a variety of styles: folk to pop to easy listening; with music from artists such as the Eagles, John Denver and The Everly Brothers. Open Season will be performing from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at The Road, 4845 W Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. Suggested donation is $7. Call 2186066 or visit facebook.com/ TheROADSyracuse. Pfanenstiel was born and raised in Colorado, where he developed his love of folk music; especially Gordon
