JAZZ FEST SET FOR SUNDAY
C
NY Jazz Central’s annual winter jazz festival, The Seneca Savings January JAZZfest, will again be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Mohegan Manor, Baldwinsville. This year’s national guest artist is Ron Wilkins, New York City vocalist and trombonist, with Syracuse singer Ronnie Leigh. Continuous music on all floors of the venue will showcase a multiplicity of styles - from bebop, cabaret, R and B, Soul, and Smooth Jazz to Texas Swing. The Syracuse Ceramics Guild will hold a fine arts silent auction, and a pair of S.U. basketball tickets will be raffled. Advance tickets are available for $25 at cnyjazz.org. Admission at the door is $30, $15 with valid student I.D. Other acts performing throughout the day include the RnB and classic soul of Trumptight 315, Mark Hoffmann’s Texasstyle “Swing This!” with special guest soloists, cabaret vocalist Scott Dennis and pianist Dave Solazzo. Twin jam sessions will finish the festivities, a CNY Jazz Alumni jam and a closing session led by Jeff Stockham and his Jazz Police. Mohegan Manor’s fine food and drink will be available at all times throughout the eight-hour festival. A complete hourby-hour performance schedule is available at cnyjazz.org/january-jazzfest. CNY Jazz is partnering with one of the area’s most respected visual art organizations, the Syracuse Ceramics Guild, which
will hold a fine arts silent auction to benefit both organizations, featuring work by internationally renowned artists including Margie Hughto and David McDonald. Raffle items will also be available, including the centerpiece prize of two tickets to any basketball game in the Dome for the remainder of their season. “We call this event our annual ‘fun-raiser’, because you’d never know it was a charity event,” said Larry Luttinger founder of CNY Jazz and creator of the event, now in its eighth year. “There’s a room with a style of music catering to every taste at this festival.” All proceeds from the event will support CNY Jazz Central, which presents more than 300 events to an annual audience of over 54,000. They include a summer season of festivals and concerts like the Northeast Jazz & Wine Fest, the Stage of Nations ECOfest and Jazz in the City; the CNY Jazz Cabaret Series, a busy arts-in-ed-
ucation service, shows at downtown’s Jazz Central theater, the SummerJazz Workshop, the Stan Colella Parks & Recreation All-Stars, two music series held at Le Moyne College’s Le Moyne Plaza, the new Jazz at the Cavalier Series at the historic Marriott Syracuse Downtown, and other series of all kinds throughout the extended region.

Tips for dealing with bats in the house this winter According to Oswego County Health Department Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang it’s not unusual for people to find bats in their homes during the winter. “Experts advise bats may ‘awaken’ occasionally during the winter to move around, or to adjust to changing temperatures. If their spot becomes too warm or too cold, they can find their way out of their hibernation space and into the house,” said Huang. Huang said there are several steps that
should be taken whenever there is a possibility of a person or pet being exposed to a potentially rabid bat: ✓ The bat should be captured, taking care to avoid damage to its head. ✓ All “bat-related” incidents should be reported immediately to the health department’s environmental division. The staff will investigate to determine the threat of exposure to people and pets. For instructions on how to capture a bat, watch the New York State Department of Health video, "Catch a Bat Safely,"
health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/ zoonoses/rabies/ or go to health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/zoonoses/rabies/bats/ homes.htm. Two types of bats, the little brown bat and big brown bat, may end up in a house in the winter, but residents are more likely to encounter a big brown bat in their home. Big brown bats typically have an 11- to 13-inch wingspan and a body size of approximately four to five inches. They are more solitary than little brown bats and are more likely to hibernate in an at-
tic, crawl space or wall. The health department reminds pet owners that all dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated against rabies. Even animals that remain indoors can be exposed to rabies through a bite or scratch from a rabid bat. The health department will announce the 2018 rabies clinic schedule in the spring. For more information visit oswegocounty.com/health/rabies.pdf or facebook. com/OswegoHealthDpt/.
Syracuse Heart Walk kickoff held, event to be held April 21 The Syracuse Heart Walk is coming up soon and, to kick off the American Heart Association’s walk season, walkers, survivors, volunteers, team coaches and corporate donors gathered for a “Heart Walk Happy Hour” at the OneGroup Center in Syracuse. The evening featured healthy snacks, a chance to gather information about the Heart Walk and time to meet with fellow Heart Walk participants and leaders.
The Heart Walk will be held on Saturday, April 21, at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $675,000. The 2018 Heart Walk chairman is Duane Wiedor, senior vice president of research and development at Welch Allyn. “I’m proud to serve as the Heart Walk Chairman,” Wiedor said. “As a heart disease survivor, I know my life would be very different without the cardiac research
funded by the American Heart Association. Money raised at the Syracuse Heart Walk helps save lives and make our community healthier.” Highlights from Wednesday evening’s kick-off include: Registration is now open for the Syracuse Heart Walk – participants and teams can register at syracuseheartwalk.org. This year’s Inspirational Honorees, Keeley Kirwan, Srđan Lukić and Patti De-
Paulis, were introduced. Kirwan is a young congenital heart defect survivor. Lukić was born with a heart defect and now focuses on a healthy lifestyle to protect his heart. DePaulis is a stroke survivor. Follow along throughout the 2018 Syracuse Heart Walk season on social media with #SyrHeartWalk. Sweet Cabaret
SUDOKU
Father Champlin’s Guardian Angel Society to host event at Marriott Syracuse Downtown Love and romance will be in the air on Saturday evening, Feb. 10, at the Sweet Cabaret fundraiser for Father Champlin’s Guardian Angel Society. Dining, dancing and desserts are on the menu for the annual gala at Marriott Syracuse Downtown’s Grand Ballroom starting at 7 p.m. and going into the night to 11:30 p.m. This year the event will honor the memory of Msgr. Joseph Champlin, who passed away 10 years ago on Jan. 17, with a special musical tribute, video and student performers from Cathedral Academy at Pompei. “Our Guardian Angel Society works hard to help at-risk children have educational opportunities, whether through assisting with tuition assistance or mentor
support. Father Champlin’s goal was to see these kids graduate from high school and become productive citizens without letting financial barriers stand in the way,” said Kathy Fedrizzi, executive director Sweet Cabaret features the DeSantis Orchestra Dance Mix. The setting is in the magnificent restored historic hotel. Tickets are $95 per person and all proceeds will help provide mentoring and tuition assistance for at-risk youth of the city of Syracuse. Guardian Angel Society supports Cathedral Academy at Pompei and establishes scholarship opportunities to Bishop Grimes, Bishop Ludden and CBA. Reservations can be made by calling 315-422-7218 or visiting guardianangelsoc. org.

The public is invited to attend the Eighth Annual Interfaith Harmony Assembly, “Voices in Harmony,” which will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at Congregation Beth SholomChevra Shas, 18 Patsy Lane, Jamesville. This event is a collaboration between InterFaith Works, Women Transcending Boundaries and local faith communities to help spread a message of harmony and understanding by showcasing and celebrating the many faith traditions in Central New York. Hundreds of people attended last year’s event and the attendance is expected to be the same this year. The World Interfaith Harmony Assembly, which occurs during the United Nations’ World Interfaith Harmony Week, affirms that mutual understanding and interfaith dialogue help foster a culture of peace. The assembly provides an opportunity for the community to appreciate the beauty and diversity of our varied faith traditions, and to discover the many commonalities present among different faiths. There is no fee to attend the event, and a reception will follow. The temple’s upper parking lot is for handicap parking, and the lower two lots are for general parking. Overflow parking is available at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church with a shuttle to the Synagogue that starts at 5:30 p.m. Further information can be found on the InterFaith Works’ website. InterFaith Works of Central New York,
through education, service, and dialogue, affirms the dignity of each person and every faith community and works to create relationships and understanding. Founded in 1976, InterFaith Works addresses deeply embedded social divisions leading to community action and policy change. InterFaith Works’ social service programs address the needs of and empower people who are vulnerable, low income and targets of oppression, including refugees, the elderly and the institutionalized, through direct service and educational programs. InterFaith Works is committed to the belief that all people are deserving of dignity and respect regardless of ethnicity, faith tradition, social circumstances or age. Key programs include the Ahmad & Elizabeth El-Hindi Center for Dialogue, Center for New Americans, Interfaith Initiatives and Senior Services. Women Transcending Boundaries is an egalitarian community of women from many faith and cultural traditions. Through programs, events, and social interactions, we seek to nurture mutual respect and understanding by sharing information about our diverse beliefs, customs, and practices and by working together to address our common concerns in this post-9/11 world. Our further intent is to share our personal and collective experiences with the wider community, to educate, and to serve.

Jazzfest at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Mohegan Manor, 58 Oswego St., in Baldwinsville. Tickets cost $25 in advance, or $30 at the door; 315-479-JAZZ; cnyjazz.org. “I’ll be performing a mix of originals and standards” Wilkins told the Eagle Penny Saver. “There will be vocal tributes to Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau, and Nat King Cole. I’ll be performing on vocals, bass trombone, tenor trombone and euphonium.” Over the past 40 years, the bass brassman has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, San Antonio Brass, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the U.S. Air Force Band of the West. Wilkins often takes jobs playing music for theatrical productions including The Big Apple Circus, Ringling Brothers and Broadway shows such as “Wicked.” He released two CDs as
a leader, “A Tribute to the Masters” (2000) and “The Bundee Brothers Bone Band” (2005) with former Ringling Brothers lead trombonist, Bill Gibson. He runs his own New York City big band alongside trombonist Rebecca Patterson which features their writing and includes some of New York City’s premiere musicians. Wilkins will be accompanied here by saxophonist Mike Dubaniewicz, pianist Rick Montalbano, bassist Tom Brigandi and drummer Jimmy Johns. Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame vocalist Ronnie Leigh will also step up to the microphone during Wilkins’ set. “I believe in the power of music as a force for healing, enjoyment and entertainment,” Wilkins said. “It unites mind, heart, spirit and body. Music breaks all barriers, surpasses spoken language and brings people
together.”

By Donna Newman osie is looking for her “FURever” family! This pretty kitty originally came to the shelter as part of a hoarding case. She was adopted, but was returned two months later when the owner moved and didn’t take her along. Rosie is only about two years old. She loves people, but prefers to be the only cat. Rosie is a staff favorite and spends a lot of her time in the human resource office. Take the time to meet Rosie, and you just may find your newest best friend! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479. Regina Petrera-Chiaizia
