Reverend to be inducted into Abolition Hall of Fame
May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society is proud to announce that Reverend Samuel J. May (1798-1871) will be inducted into the National Abolition Hall of Fame in Peterboro, NY as a member of the class of 2018. The induction ceremony will take place on October 20, 2018 at the Hall of Fame. Rev. May joins the ranks of distinguished abolitionists such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and the Reverend Jermain Loguen. Rev. May was the second minister of
the Syracuse church that now bears his name, May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, serving from 1845-1868. By the time he came to Syracuse, he was a well known activist and reformer. Although he worked for a variety of social causes including women’s rights and child labor, ministering to the “canal boys” working on the Erie Canal, he is best known for his work to abolish slavery. Rev. May was converted to the cause of “immediate and unconditional eman-
cipation” at the age of 33 after meeting the committed abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison. Together with Garrison and others, Rev. May was a founding member of the American Antislavery Society. In Syracuse, Rev. May worked closely with Rev. Jermain Loguen of the AME Zion Church. Revs. May and Loguen raised money for fugitive slaves and for the legal defense of escaped slaves. The homes of both men were stations on the Underground Railroad. Both were in-
volved in the famous 1851 “Jerry Rescue”, in which a group of men including leading citizens of Syracuse, stormed the jail and freed Jerry McHenry, an escaped slave who had been recaptured and arrested under the Fugitive Slave Act. Rev. May risked his life in this rescue and for other causes as well. The initiative to nominate Rev. May for inclusion into The Abolition Hall of Fame was done through the efforts of the Public Relations Committee at May Memorial.

Crunch aim to shoot Comets out of the sky this weekend By Russ Tarby
A
fter riding a revitalizing nine-game winning streak from Dec. 27 to Jan. 17, the Syracuse Crunch dropped three in a row including a frustrating 4-2 loss to Thruway rivals the Utica Comets in the Handshake City on Jan. 20. Despite peppering 42 shots on goal that night, the Crunch was unable to put any more than two pucks in the net. The loss put the Crunch on a three-game skid and moved the team to 24-14-2-2 on the season. Syracuse is 3-3-0-0 in the 12-game season series against Utica. The Crunch plan to turn the table on the Comets this coming weekend with games Friday, Feb. 2, at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica and at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in downtown Syracuse. The Crunch is the top farm team of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Comets are affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks. Both Syracuse and Utica compete in the American Hockey League’s North Division.

By Donna Newman The only thing this Capone will steal is your heart! This handsome guy came to the shelter weighing only 39 pounds. With some TLC (and extra portions!), he’s strong, dark and handsome! Capone’s a lover; he loves going for walks, he loves car rides and he loves treats. But most of all, Capone loves people. “Pony” is affectionate, fun-loving, and energetic. He’s great in the car and patient in the bath. He would need to be the only pet, but that’s OK with Capone – more love and attention for him! Capone has been at the shelter for almost a year; that’s too long for any dog! Meet Capone for yourself and see what a special guy he is! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

Snow Leopard Soirée planned Feb. 9 gala, auction benefits zoo education programs
The Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s annual black-tie gala, the Snow Leopard Soirée, is a charity ball with a wildlife theme that benefits the zoo’s education programs. This year’s event, set for Friday, Feb. 9, honors longtime zoo supporters Rick and Laura Iorio of Manlius, the couple who donated the zoo’s Giant Pacific octopus exhibit and the new Octo-Maze children’s bouncehouse opening in the spring. The Soirée, held right at the zoo, includes a gourmet dinner by Catering at the Zoo, live music and dancing, interactions with ambassador animals and a chance to bid on dozens of auction items - from gift certificates to CNY hotels and restaurants to original paintings created by zoo animals to behind-the-scenes zoo experiences. Starting at 6:30 p.m. will be cocktails and silent auction. Featured at 8 p.m. will be dinner and live auction followed by dessert and dancing. And, new this year, even those who can’t attend can participate in the popular silent auction - thanks to the addition of mobile bidding to allow bids made via cell phone or tablet. The mobile bidding by GiveSmart is a user-friendly tool that works on any mobile device without even having to download an app. People can pre-register for the auction, browse items ahead of time, check the bidding and increase their bids during the event, and even bid automatically up to a pre-set maximum bid for a coveted item. “We think mobile bidding will make this year’s Snow Leopard Soirée especially exciting,” said Friends of the Zoo President Janet Agostini. “People at the gala will be able to keep tabs on the auction by glancing at their phones rather than having to duck out of dinner or dancing to go check the bidding. People who can’t be there can help raise money for the zoo by participating in the auction from wherever they happen to be.” As a nod to the Iorios’ admiration for the

Auction donations are still coming in, but they include overnight stays at the Downtown Syracuse Marriott, brunch for two at the Brewster Inn, a round of golf with Friends Board Chair Carl Isley and use of a luxury box for a 2018 Syracuse Chiefs game. The zoo also is offering animal artwork and experiences including a painting by 50-year-old Asian elephant Siri. Agostini said live auction prizes with a serious “Wow” factor include a trip to Africa’s
Zulu Nyala lodge and game refuge - a privately owned reserve that’s home to 40 species of wild animals – and for the first time ever, a behind-the-scenes snow leopard experience at the zoo. Silent auction items include a sloth encounter and a training session with Moakler the elephant barn dog. The zoo is hoping for a wild night of bidding to raise money for education programs that reach thousands of people every year to foster knowledge about wildlife and conservation. They include the Zoo to You program that sends educators and ambassador animals to schools, libraries and community centers, and the Zoo Guides program that employs
at-risk Syracuse youth to serve as education interns offering animal information at zoo events throughout the summer. Zoo Guide teens facilitated over 130,000 visitor interactions in 2017 alone. “The zoo’s education programs truly impact our community by engaging people in caring about wildlife conservation and endangered species, both locally and globally,” said Zoo Director Ted Fox. “ Information about the event, including the auctions and mobile bidding process, will be at rosamondgiffordzoo.org/soiree.
