June 6-12 is Navy Week in Syracuse
A
navy to drop in on cny
merica’s Navy is coming to the Salt City! Syracuse was selected as one of 15 cities to host a Navy Week, one of the Navy’s signature outreach programs. It was the only city chosen in the northeastern United States for 2016. Syracuse Navy Week is scheduled for June 6 through12, in conjunction with the Syracuse International Air Show (June 11 and 12). The purpose is to give area residents an opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity. The Navy will also include the following features in the week-long celebration. Note - due to security concerns, times and locations are not yet available: Navy Kick-off event with Mayor Miner in attendance Navy Divers and Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams Sailors from USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world Navy Band musical performances Senior Navy leaders, who will engage with local corporate, civic, government and education leaders Navy simulator(s) and other interactive displays Visits to area schools Community service projects and events with local sports franchises Visits with local veterans Since 2005, the Navy Week program
has served as the Navy’s signature outreach effort into areas of the country that don’t have a significant Navy presence, with 181 Navy Weeks held in 68 different U.S. cities. “Navy Weeks are designed to help Americans understand that their Navy protects and defends America on the world’s oceans, that their Navy is deployed around the world around the clock, and is ready to defend America at all times,” said John Wallach, deputy director of the Navy Office of Community Outreach. “Because the Navy is concentrated primarily on
both coasts, we’re challenged to communicate our mission away from fleet concentration areas. That’s where the

Visits to area schools are planned as part of Navy Week in Syracuse. Navy Week program comes in.” Navy Week focuses a variety of outreach assets, equipment and personnel on each city, for a week-long series of engagements, with key influencers and organizations representing all sectors of the market. “During a Navy Week, 75-100 outreach events are coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and
diversity organizations in the city,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brett Dawson, Navy Office of Community Outreach Event Planning

Department. “We bring in as much of the Navy as we can.” The Blue Angels, the Navy Parachute Team, bands, divers, Seabees, EOD teams, crews of ships and submarines that are named after a city, state or have a tie to the area (hometown Sailors, medical personnel, environmental displays, USS Constitution Sailors and equipment, and Navy recruiting assets) all participate in the Navy Week program.

Birdies For Birds to tee off June 13 Benefits Montezuma Wetlands Complex and Onondaga Lake programs, projects
T
he Second Annual Birdies For Birds golf fundraiser will tee off on Monday, June 13, at the Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse. This event will support important habitat conservation projects at Onondaga Lake and the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, and educational programs to foster the next generation of environmental stewards. “We look forward to a wonderful day at the prestigious Bellevue Country Club which will include 18-holes of golf, lunch, prizes, cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and an awards reception,” said Chris Lajewski, center director of the Montezuma Audubon Center. “All proceeds from this event will support habitat conservation projects and educational programs to protect and enhance the Montezuma Wetlands Complex and Onondaga Lake for the benefit of birds, other wildlife and the people in our community.” The event will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun scramble at 1 p.m., cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m. and a dinner and awards reception at 7 p.m. For people who can’t golf during the afternoon, there is a cocktails, dinner and silent auction-only registration option. Silent auction items include four tickets to a New
York Yankees baseball game, a MacKenzieChilds bird feeder, an overnight stay for two at a Montezuma-area bed and breakfast and a guided tour of Montezuma, an overnight stay for two at the Inns of Aurora, a case of award-winning wine from Montezuma Winery, framed bird photographs and more. Erin M. Crotty, a leader in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and a life-long birding enthusiast, will be the featured speaker. She brought decades of experience to Audubon New York when she joined as executive director in April 2013. A recognized leader in the environmental field, Erin was commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation from 2001-2005 and the first woman to lead this agency of then over 3,300 professional staff and a nearly $1 billion annual budget. During her tenure, Erin led the first in the nation 11 state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) to develop a cap and trade program for power plant carbon dioxide emissions which is now a national model. In addition, Erin oversaw the largest land conservation agreement to protect more than 260,000 acres of former International Paper property in the Adirondacks. After years of inaction, she helped craft the
Superfund/Brownfields Law of 2003, and developed and led the integrated business, public and legislative strategy that led to the law’s successful passage. In her career, Erin also led the negotiations of the historic New York City Watershed Agreement and helped develop the toughest in the nation regulations on power plant emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide – precursors to acid rain. For nearly five years, Erin served as the Director of State and Community Relations for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), her alma mater, acting as the university’s primary liaison to State and local government, businesses and non-profits throughout the community. Erin has been recognized on numerous occasions for her conservation leadership, including with the New York State Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section award, Audubon’s Long Island Sound Guardian Award, and she was profiled in the National Journal’s May 2004 Special Report for her work to combat climate change. The Montezuma Wetlands Complex and Onondaga Lake have been recognized as Important Bird Areas (IBAs) by Audubon New York as they provide essential habitat for a large variety of migratory birds. The
Montezuma Audubon Center is a leading model of partnership between the state, not-for-profit community, and private sector. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) owned facility is operated by Audubon New York and supported by an Advisory Board and surrounding communities for its efforts to connect area residents and visitors to these irreplaceable habitats and promote their restoration. Since the Center was established in 2007, it has become a valuable community resource that has worked closely with the NYSDEC to enhance outreach activities and prioritize key acquisitions to enhance the surrounding habitat. “Through strategic partnerships, Audubon New York and the Montezuma Audubon Center offer a diverse range of programs highlighting the critical importance of habitat and focus on wetland ecology, migration, and habitat restoration and improvements,” Lajewski said. “Dozens of programs introducing or reintroducing children and adults of all ages to nature are offered year-long.” Visit ny.audubon.org/montezuma for details on how to participate in the Birdies For Birds event.
Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk comes to Syracuse
To end a disease that takes the life of an American man every 20 minutes, Syracuse joins more than 35 communities across the nation in hosting the Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk. Zero – The End of Prostate Cancer and Associated Medical Professionals will partner on June 25 for a 5K run/walk at Clay Central Park to save lives and help the more than 12,000 men in New York who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. “It is important that men – whether they have a family history of prostate cancer or not – to be aware of the
disease,” said Dennis Green, a local prostate cancer survivor. “Speaking out about the disease is vital. Prostate cancer should not hide in the shadows, and events like the Run/ Walk ensure that it doesn’t happen.” Green was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer nine years ago at the young age of 43. He had no family history of the disease and was the first man in his family to be diagnosed. Now 52, Dennis is a strong advocate for prostate cancer awareness. When asked what advice he’d give to a man who is newly diag-
nosed, Dennis noted that each man should “be sure to have a diverse team of doctors on his case” and that spreading awareness of the disease is of the highest importance. “For the past 10 years, the Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk has rallied communities and given participants a voice in the fight to end prostate cancer,” said Zero CEO Jamie Bearse. “By mobilizing survivors, patients, caregivers, families and businesses in communities across the country to raise funds and awareness, we can make prostate cancer a
national priority.” Funds raised for this year’s Run/ Walk event will be used to fund increased education and awareness for men and families in the local community, as well as free prostate cancer screening events in 2016. Additionally, funds will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, patient support resources and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. Don’t bug out! Protect yourself from lyme disease
In Your Yard:
• Keep ticks away by mowing your lawn often and remove brush. Stack wood neatly and in dry areas. • Keep playground toys, decks, and patios away from wooded areas. • Keep deer away by not feeding deer on your property, make a barrier to keep deer from going onto your yard, and get rid of plants that attract deer.
When Outdoors:
• Wear light colored clothes, long pants, long sleeves, and socks. Tuck in your shirt and tuck pant legs into your boots or socks.
Forum to discuss tick borne illnesses Did you know that outdoor workers and children ages 5 to 13 are at a higher risk for tick bites and lyme disease? An educational forum, “Ticks and Tick Borne Illness,” will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Manlius Village Centre Auditorium, 1 • Check for ticks after being outdoors, even when you are in your own yard. • Bathe or shower (preferably within 2 hours) after coming indoors. • Wash and dry clothing at a high temperature to kill any ticks that may remain on your clothing. Use Repellent When Outdoors: • Follow the label directions. Do not spray repellent in enclosed areas. • Put a small amount

of repellent on your hands and apply it to your child. Do not let children touch repellents. Repellents containing DEET should not be used on children under two months old. • Use insect repellent containing a 20-30% concentration of DEET on clothes and on bare skin. Use just enough repellent to cover exposed skin. • Do NOT use repellents containing permethrin directly on your skin.
• Do NOT spray repellent directly on your face, especially near the eyes or mouth. Apply a small amount of repellent near the ears. Do NOT use repellent on cuts, wounds, or on irritated skin. • Wash your treated skin with soap and water after returning indoors. If you have a reaction to a repellent, wash the treated skin with soap and water right away and call your doctor.
Check for Ticks:
• Do a full body tick check on yourself, your children, and your pets after being outdoors. • Check your body for ticks especially your scalp, neck, armpits, groin, and ankles. • Look carefully when checking for ticks because they can be as small as a poppy seed.
How to Remove a Tick:
• Take tweezers to the
tick’s head or mouth, where it enters the skin. • Pull the tick firmly up, in a steady motion, away from the skin. • Clean the bite with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. • Keep a record of the date, time, and where you were bitten. • Get rid of the tick by placing it in a container of rubbing alcohol. • Learn more at: health. ny.gov/diseases/communicable/lyme/tickfree/.

The Zika virus

Avoid the threat by avoiding ticks, remove them correctly if bitten Lyme disease is spread by a bite from an infected deer tick. Not all ticks are infected, but it is still important to stay away from ticks.
The Zika virus is spread by an infected day time biting mosquito of the Aedes family. According to an Onondaga County press release, these mosquitoes are found in southern and southeastern states of the United States, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. “Currently, there is no local spread of the Zika virus in the continental United States, but cases have been reported in returning travelers from outbreak countries,” the county report said. The virus can also be spread by sex, from mother to baby and through a blood transfusion. Although at least two cases of the Zika virus have been diagnosed in Onondaga County, those cases have been reported to involve individuals who contracted it while traveling outside of the United States. “Onondaga County does not have Aedes mosquitoes, so at present there is no risk for mosquito transmission of Zika locally,” states the report, which can be found at ongov.net/health/zikavirus.html. According to the Centers for Disease Control, most people infected with Zika virus won’t even know they have the disease because they won’t have symptoms. “The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache,” the CDC said, recommending testing for all pregnant women who have traveled where there is “active ongoing Zika virus transmission” as well as anyone with symptoms within 14 days of travelling to an affected area. In addition, the CDC is recommending that women of child bearing age or who are pregnant postpone travel to areas with an “active ongoing Zika transmission until further notice.” What we know There currently is no vaccine to prevent Zika. The CDC recommends preventing Zika by avoiding mosquito bites and to prevent sexual transmission of Zika by using condoms or not having sex. For more information visit cdc.gov/zika.

Crouse Spirit of Women program spotlights stroke
About 55,000 more women than men have strokes each year, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The reason for that is because the average life expectancy for women is greater than for men, and the highest rates for stroke are in the oldest age groups. Additional statistics report that more women at a younger age are also having strokes. Learning stroke risk factors, symptoms and knowing what to do if someone is suffering a stroke are critical in increasing survival rates and preventing disability. For these reasons and more, Crouse Spirit of Women’s next ladies night out will focus on lifesaving treatments and advancements in stroke care. Given will be a presentation from Eric Deshaies, MD, FAANS, FACS, medical director for the Crouse Neuroscience Institute and Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery. Titled “Good Health is Your Best Accessory,” the event is scheduled to be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9,
Eric Deshaies, MD at Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club, 6777 Lakeshore Road, Cicero. The program is free and open to the public, however registration is required at crouse.org/accessory or by calling 472-2464. The evening will include a variety of tasty, healthy food and beverages and exclusive door prizes, plus mini-spa activities and various fash-
ion accessory vendors. Deshaies is the area’s leading expert on advanced stroke rescue therapies. He is one of only a few dual-fellowship trained neurosurgeons in the country and the only one in Central New York. Deshaies received his medical degree from University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He has also authored over 50 publications, including two books and more than 30 research publications. Crouse Spirit of Women provides education, engagement and empowerment for women of all ages to make more informed healthcare choices. The program helps women nurture a healthy lifestyle through entertaining, interactive and educational events.

cnyspca pet of the week
Meet this Angel
Angel is a little piece of heaven who’s looking for a home! Angel was surrendered for adoption because her owners had landlord issues. Through no fault of her own, she’s lost her home and family. She’s two years old and only about 40 pounds, so she’s a lot of love in a small package. She’s very sweet and a little shy, but she warms up quickly. She’s very affectionate and wants nothing more than to love and be loved by someone special. She’s an active but very gentle dog and would do well in a home with children of any age. Angel was a Canine Ambassador at a recent event, and she was awesome – she loved everyone she met, and everyone loved her. She appears to be tolerant of cats, and she’s never been dog-tested, so we always require a meet and greet if the adopter already has a dog. Come meet this little Angel for yourself and give her the loving home she’s been looking for! For more information about adopting, visit cnyspca.org or call 454-4479.

Talent to spare
The 2016 Syracuse Chiefs stay strong; previous players recalled
A
By Russ Tarby
s of May 23, the Syracuse Chiefs remained two games over .500, having prevailed in 22 games and lost 20. That successful record stands in stark contrast to last season, when the top farm club of the Washington Nationals started out bleakly, posting a 19-43 record after it first 62 games. Anyhow, this year’s team seems destined for the International League playoffs. The starting rotation – A.J. Cole, Aaron Laffey, Austin Voth, Taylor Hill and Pedro Espino – is solid as a rock and will only get better when Taylor Jordan returns from the disabled list. The bullpen features several live arms including those of Trevor Gott, Sam Runion, Erik Davis, Matt Grace, Juan Gutierrez and Rafael Martin, all of whom are capable of closing out games. The lineup features multi-talented shortstop Trea Turner, and hardhitting outfielders Brian Goodwin, Caleb Ramsey and Tony Campana, Last year’s IL All-Star infielder Jason Martinson has already cracked four homers this season as has first
baseman Matt Skole. The slugging Skole, who hails from Georgia, is tied with Goodwin, a plucky North Carolinian, for the team lead in runs-batted-in, at 24. A slew of Syracuse hitters are consistently making contact, and three of them – Turner, Goodwin and Ramsey -- boast batting averages higher than .300.
Where are they now?
–Former Chiefs pitcher Craig Stammen (2009-11) was the first hurler to register a base hit in Syracuse in 36 years. Stammen smacked a solid RBI double to left field at Alliance Bank Stadium on Mother’s Day, 2009, as he beat the Indianapolis Indians, 12-2. It was the first time a Syracuse pitcher hit safely at home since the designated hitter rule was adopted in 1973. A big right-hander, Stammen is now in the Cleveland Indians organization in his home state of Ohio. We may be seeing him at NBT Bank Stadium this summer because when he fully recovers from surgery, he’ll be suiting up for the Columbus Clippers. –Broadcaster Jason Benetti (200914) is now the television play-byplay announcer for Chicago White
Sox home games, in his native Windy City. –Infielder Manny Burriss (201415) returned to The Show with the 2016 Philadelphia Phillies. A twotime IL All-Star, Burriss previously played in the bigs for the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals. –Utilityman Zach Walters (201214) has landed in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization on the roster of the Oklahoma City Dodgers of the Pacific Coast League. –Outfielder Corey Brown (201113) also plays for Oklahoma City. –Infielder Brandon Laird’s (2014) with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, in the Japanese Pacific League. While with Syracuse in 2014, Laird took a liking to Italian food, especially after he discovered garlic knots. I wonder if he digs sushi. He’s apparently not too fond of beer. On May 10, Laird homered off a Kirin Beer sign earning him a year’s supply of suds and $10,000, according to a report in the Japan Times. He told reporters he appreciated the cash, but would donate the beer to his batting practice pitchers. –On May 9, Stephen Strasburg
(2010-11; 2015) agreed on a sevenyear, $175 million contract with the Washington Nationals. This season, the 27-year-old right-hander from San Diego, Calif., is 7-0 with an earned-run average of 2.80 with 75 strikeouts in 61 innings.
Bisons, Bats swing here
The Buffalo Bisons – the top farm club of the Toronto Blue Jays – are in town this week to face the Chiefs at NBT Bank Stadium, at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 4-5. followed by a four-game homestand against the visiting Louisville Bats, June 6-9. The Syracuse ball club is the top affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Ticket prices at NBT Bank Stadium range from $6 to $12, and parking costs $5; syracusechiefs. com; 474-7833. All Chiefs games can be heard live over WSKO, The Score 1260, on the AM radio dial and online at thescore1260.com, with play-by-play announcers Kevin Brown and Eric Gallanty.
