Tuffy behind the plate By Russ Tarby
H
is first name is James, but everyone calls him Tuffy. Tuffy Gosewisch, a journeyman catcher, joined the Syracuse Chiefs in midApril after he was signed as a free agent by the Washington Nationals. Tuffy functions as backstop backup after call-ups of Pedro Severino and Spencer Keiboom and an injury sustained by longtime Chief catcher Jhonatan Solano. Tuffy Gosewisch [pronounced GO-Sa-witch] hails from Freeport, Illinois, but he attended high school and college in the baseball-friendly climate of Arizona. The tough-as-nails catcher has played nearly a decade in the minor leagues as well as 137 major-league games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners. But he didn’t get his nickname for his tough play around the plate. No, he has been Tuffy ever since he was six months old. “As a baby I had a tendency to break things,” he explained. “I would break my crib, throw everything I could, just be a pain in the neck. So that’s where it came from, my dada gave it to me. I heard I was

a terrible child.” Now 34, Tuffy has played in 42 games for the Chiefs so far this season, and he’s hitting a decent .240, with 12 doubles and two home runs. Behind the plate he prides himself on how he handles the pitchers, and how he can keep runners from advancing on the basepaths. During the month of June, Tuffy has been especially hot with a bat in his hands. He has knocked seven doubles and posted a .296 batting average this month.

‘Teal There’s A Cure’ Run/Walk to be held July 4 in Marcellus The 10th annual Maureen T. O’Hara “Teal There’s A Cure” run/walk will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, at Marcellus Park. Participants will follow the course through the village of Marcellus, along Nine Mile Creek and back to the park. An awards ceremony will follow at 10:15 a.m. The event was started in 2009 by the O’Hara family to educate people about ovarian cancer in honor of their daughter/ sister, Maureen O’Hara, who passed away from ovarian cancer one week after the 2012 race. The race was officially renamed in Maureen’s honor in 2015. Over the past decade, the race has raised more than $336,000 to support awareness, education and research of ovarian cancer. The O’Hara family hopes to raise $40,000 with this year’s race to help bring its 10year total to more than $376,000 . Each year, more than 22,000 women are diagnosed and approximately 14,000 women die from ovarian cancer, according
to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women in the United States. Due to the nonspecific symptoms of ovarian cancer, only 20 percent of all cases are found at an early stage. Most cases are not diagnosed until a later stage, resulting in a survival rate as low as 28 percent. Currently, there is no early detection test to specifically screen for ovarian cancer. Preregistration is $30; day-of is $40. Register online at runsignup.com until noon on Tuesday, July 3. Raffle tickets also can be purchased online. Participants can honor their loved ones by adding a name on the back of their T-shirts with a $100 donation. Member of Rusted Root to perform in Syracuse Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root and guitarist Dirk Miller will be performing at Good Nature Brewing Company in Syracuse on July 1. Back in the 1990s, Michael Glabicki had a vision he was driven to pursue. He left college, started a band despite the fact that he had no idea where the journey would deliver him. He spent two years developing this vision while learning the Submitted photo craft of songwriting. That vision grew into Rusted Root, the multiplatinum band out of Pittsburgh, and Michael became one of music’s most unique voices. While Rusted Root is on hiatus, Michael has been devoting his time to creating an entirely new soundscape. Michael promises to bring back parts of the Rusted Root of old, but also including more percussion and female vocals. Collectively, the band hope that the new material will deliver it to a special place. Michael will continue to play Rusted Root’s entire catalogue but promises to deliver fresh inspired versions, as well as introducing new and exciting music under the moniker of Uprooted.

Smooth Jazz Sunday to be held July 1 at The Beginning II “Smooth Jazz Sunday” comes to The Beginning II from 1 to 6 p.m. on July 1 , with live music from two of Central New York’s most popular jazz bands. E.S.P. and the Longwood Jazz Project. The Beginning II is located at 6897 Manlius Center Road in East Syracuse. Triple SAMMY award winners E.S.P. will kick things off at 1pm, playing familiar tunes as well as several selections from their latest release “Zero Gravity”. Guitarist John Magnante, bassist Matthew Vacanti and drummer Evan Duchene will be joined by a special guest, the legendary Jeff Stockham on trumpet, adding a touch of Miles Davis to the afternoon. As an added bonus, Vocalist Kirsten Tegetmeyer will join the group for a few numbers. “We love outdoor shows! The Beginning two is a great spot to have live jazz on the lawn” says Vacanti. “A lawn chair, cool jazz and a glass of wine – the makings of a perfect Sunday afternoon.”
The second half of the day will feature the Longwood Jazz Project, a high energy quintet, that places its own eclectic stamp on traditional and contemporary jazz, covering jazz greats like Jeff Lorber, Yellow Jackets, David Sanborn, and Kirk Whalum. Lead by saxophonist Scott Remillard, the group is the perfect soundtrack for summer with drummer Gary Iacovelli, keyboardist Tom Witkowski, bassist Vynce Watson and vocal styling by T.K. Howard. “I love the idea of joining two top groovy jazz bands on one show.” Says Remillard. “For me, this will be the event of the summer!” For the last set, a rousing finale will take place featuring members from both groups. Girl Scouts offer summer camp open to all girls
Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways summer camp registration is open for all girls ages 7-17 for resident camps and girls ages 5-14 for new day camps (must be 5 and entering first grade in fall 2018). One week of co-ed day camp will also be offered.
