Monster Jam roars into Dome April 7

ickets for the Syracuse Monster Jam show on April 7 are now on sale. Event gates open at 5:30 p.m.; show starts at 7 p.m. This marks the eighth consecutive year Monster Jam has been h e l d at the Carrier Dome. The new season will bring motorsport fans to the edge of their seats with adrenaline-charged, high-flying, four-wheel excitement that is fun for the entire family. Party in the pits The “Party in the Pits” will be held from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, on the Carrier Dome floor. The Pit Party gives fans the opportunity to get a view of the trucks up close and meet the drivers of the massive Monster Jam trucks. Attendees can get autographs from Monster Jam drivers until 5 p.m. Additionally, a limited number of Pit Party Early Access Passes are available this year for fans. The upgraded pass provides one-hour early entry into the Pit Party from 1:30-2:30 p.m., in addition to entry to the regular Pit Party 2:30-5:30 p.m. Both the Pit Party Early Access Pass and Pit Party passes need to be accompanied by an event ticket.

Walking the runway to help keep families together Tenth Annual Bella Casa Fashion Show benefits Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York will host its annual Bella Casa Fashion Show on Thursday, April 5, at the Holiday Inn in Liverpool. Now in its 10th year, the annual event helps raise much-needed funds to support the guest families who rely on the CNY Ronald McDonald House each year as a comfortable and affordable place to stay together when they are going through the unthinkable. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., community

members are invited to join the organization and enjoy hors d’oeuvres, drinks and food stations, and go shopping at over 30 local vendors. Vendor booths will feature clothing, jewelry, handbags, health and beauty products and various services. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction featuring a mobile bidding capability allowing participants to bid on various themed baskets directly from their own mobile phones. In addition to auction items, assorted raffle prizes will be given away throughout the evening. The main event of the evening, the fashion show, will start at 7:30 p.m. More

than 40 community members representing local media groups, businesses, organizations, health care facilities and more will model the latest fashions for men, women and children. Fashions will be provided by local shops and boutiques, including Giovanni’s Tuxedos, Indie Kids, Jet Black, Koolakian’s Menswear, Mr. Shop, Showoffs Boutique, Spybaby Boutique and The Changing Room. The CNY Ronald McDonald House serves as a temporary home for families who travel to Syracuse from across New York state and northern Pennsylvania, and in some cases, foreign countries. The House provides the convenience of a pri-

vate room and warm bed, a home-cooked meal and supportive environment, all while keeping families whose children are seriously ill or injured close to Syracusearea hospitals and medical centers. Each year, the organization continues to see an increase in its occupancy rate. With a growing number of families to serve, community events like the Bella Casa Fashion Show are important for the organization to help offset its annual operating costs and support those families in need. Crouse Health appoints new chief financial officer Crouse Health has announced the appointment of Michael Tengeres as chief financial officer. A native of Western New York, Tengeres will assume the position April 30. Tengeres has served most recently as corporate vice president and chief financial officer for Bassett Healthcare Network in Cooperstown, where he was responsible for the integrated healthcare system’s financial operations, including long-range forecasting, operating and capital budget development. Prior to Bassett, Tengeres was senior director for international finance operations for the Cleveland Clinic, where he helped establish the full spectrum of financial operations for the

Rockin’ the river The Oswego State Blueline Club will host Rockin’ the River with The Billionaires band on Saturday, April 7. One of the most popular and experienced bands in Central New York, The Billionaires have performed numerous times in Oswego. The band is made up of lead singer Anna White, guitarist Rob Hoston, keyboardist Kimo Cortini, bassist Andy Jordan and former Laker hockey player Daryl Hunt on drums. Hunt, a 1981 graduate of SUNY Oswego who played goaltender, said that the chairman of the concert, Mike Cullinan, reached out to him about bringing The Billionaires to the Lake Ontario Conference Center. “When Mike contacted me, for me, it was a no-brainer,” Hunt said. “Anything I can do to help them out I would. It was an honor for them to think of us.” A local business owner, Hunt said that members of the Blueline Club were “instrumental in starting me off in business.” George Broadwell, Jr., owner of the conference center, said the band’s popularity in the local area creates a great partnership

The event takes place at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego. For seniors tired of asking their children or grandchildren for technology help, Oswego Health’s Springside at Seneca Hill will host a senior technology day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16.

This free event is open to seniors who find they need help operating their smartphone, iPad or laptop. Assistance will also be provided for those who would like to learn more about accessing the Internet, using Facetime or skyping, as well as YouTube and Instagram.

Youth will earn their hunter safety and waterfowl ID certificates while learning how to be a safe, ethical, and responsible sportsman during hands-on learning and outdoor experiences! Waterfowl ID is required to hunt waterfowl at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. This camp will be taught as a home study course to maximize our time in the field. Maria Gillard Trio to perform March 24

aria Gillard is a talented singer/songwriter from the Finger Lakes Region. Best known as a folk musician, she has grown to embrace a wider style range including jazz, swing and blues. The Maria Gillard Trio - Maria Gillard (vocals and guitar), Doug Henrie (bass) and Perry Cleaveland (vocals, fiddle and mandolin) - play Gillard’s original songs, which offer a mix of folk, swing, bluegrass and jazz. The Maria Gillard Trio will be performing as part of The Folkus Project at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at All Saints Church, 1340 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse. Oswego Health welcomes breast surgeon Lisa Lai, MD, who will provide community members with a range of services to its General Surgery Associates practice. Lai will provide care to patients needing breast care in suite 1700 of the Fulton Medical Office Building and surgical care in Oswego Hospital’s advanced surgery center. She will provide a complete range of care from screenings, to evaluation of breast masses or other concerns, management of abnormal breast imaging and

surgery for benign or malignant disease including lumpectomies and mastectomies. Lai is affiliated with the Cancer Center at Upstate Medical Center and serves as the medical director for the breast cancer program. She brings a continuum of services through the partnerships between Upstate and Oswego Health. This collaboration provides radiation oncology and medical oncology services locally for the convenience of cancer patients. This partnership will further benefit local breast cancer patients who require specialized care or choose to have plastic surgery following a breast procedure.

Lai said she found breast care an ideal fit when she was exploring specialty options during her medical training. “To me, it’s the perfect balance,” she said. “I like treating cancer and I like treating women.” She adds that while more than 95 percent of her patients are women, she does treat men. “I develop very special bonds with my patients, which begins at their initial visit and continues while they undergo breast cancer treatments,” Lai said. “As a part of their journey through treatment, I develop close, long-term relationships with my patients, which I greatly value.” A Buffalo native, Lai received

her medical degree and undergraduate degrees from SUNY Buffalo, graduating from both programs summa cum laude. She completed her surgery residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University and a Fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Fulton Day of Scholastic Jazz to feature CNY Jazz Orchestra

he third consecutive “Fulton Day of Jazz” will be held Thursday, March 15, at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton, concluding at 7:30 p.m. with a free public concert featuring the CNY Jazz Orchestra. It is hosted by Terry Caviness, director of bands at G. Ray Bodley High School, and sponsored by Fulton Savings Bank. This year marks an expansion of the festival, with the addition of the Phoenix High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Liza Grethel. The CNY Jazz day residency includes multiple clinics, rehearsals, and a “learn to improvise” scholastic jazz jam session, all given by members of the CNYJO. In the finale concert, soloists Joe Carello and Bret Zvacek will perform with Fulton’s High School Jazz Ensemble and the Phoenix jazz band, respectively. Then the prize-winning Central New York Jazz Orchestra, the regional all-star big band now in its 22nd season, will take the stage for a full-length closing set led by Zvacek. “We’re ever so thankful to our friends at Fulton Savings for their loyal support of this event, which is still growing,” said Larry Luttinger of CNY Jazz. “Oswego County doesn’t yet have an invitational scholastic jazz festival, and we’re proud to work with them to build this experience. Pysanka Egg Workshop planned Madison County Historical Society’s Heritage Handicrafts: A Leisure Arts Workshop Series will feature “Ukrainian Pysanka Egg Decoration” from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, at First United Methodist Church, 116 West Grove St. in Oneida. Artist, Educator Linda Evans will lead participants through the steps and techniques in creating a traditional Ukrainian Pysanka Egg. All materials will be provided. This workshop is for adults and children aged 13 years and up. Evans taught first grade at Verona, N.Y. for more than five years before taking a leave to raise her two children, returning to teach art for the Oneida City School District in 1989. Since retiring in 2005, she is active in many clubs and civic organizations. She has been a workshop instructor for Ukrainian egg decorating for more than eighteen years, and her personal collection includes more than 150 Pysanka eggs. Evans is a member of the Cazenovia Watercolor Society and has had her artwork in several local exhibits, both group and solo. The cost for the workshop is $25. White pine trees are fast-growing landscape trees that will break heavy winds, making them an ideal addition to any yard.” The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.

With planting instructions included, the trees will be shipped at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31. The six- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Arbor Day Foundation members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, and

“The Tree Book,” which contains information about tree planting and care.
