Djug Django will recall 1930s’ jazz on March 25 By Russ Tarby
A single string drives Djug Django. Ithaca’s Gypsy jazz band features the washtub bass playing of Syracuse native Jim Sherpa. A Bishop Ludden alumnus, Sherpa began thumping the gutbucket in the mid-1970s for the Water Street Boys jug band in Oswego where he studied theater in college. Now, after several years in New Orleans, Sherpa holds down the bottom for Djug Django, a snappy octet also featuring fiddler Eric Aceto, clarinetist Brian Earle, drummer Al Hartland, pianist Chad Lieberman and guitarists Harry Aceto, Dave Davies and Doug Robinson. Djug Django will play a concert hosted by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Uriah’s restaurant, in Liverpool. Admission costs $12 for JASS members, and $15 for others; jasscny.org; 315-652-0547. Uriah’s is located at 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57), just north of Liverpool; 315-6222250; uriahsplace.com. The Ithaca octet specializes in the music of Roma guitarist Jean Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt (1910-1953) who
founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France which also featured fiddler Stephane Grappelli. Hot Club specialties revived by Djug Django included “Nuages,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” and “Exactly Like You.” The quirky combo also plays Mose Allison songs like “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy” and blues tunes such as Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son.” Several Dixieland standards such as, “Bourbon Street Parade” and “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” will feature guest trumpeter Frank Campos, who teaches at Ithaca College’s Whalen Center for Music. Campos adds a touch of brass to the band’s string-oriented sound. “We love it when Frank joins us,” said Dave Davies, who doubles on trombone. “When he plays with us the energy goes up several notches due to the trumpet’s power and Frank’s incredible talent. His ability to compose and join in sectional riffs and of course his tasteful soloing are what make his presence on stage a real thrill.” The Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional New Orleans jazz.

RPM Raceway, featuring all-electric indoor go-kart and entertainment, has announced the return of its exciting four-week adult racing league in spring at its Syracuse location inside Destiny USA – the perfect opportunity to transport aspiring contenders into the heart-pounding world of racing. The racing league gives enthusiasts the opportunity to prove they’re the best on the track by competing in weekly races in various formats including a Grand Prix, Endurance Races and more. Participants will compete from 7-9 p.m. every Tuesday night from March 27 – April 17 to take home the Grand Prize, which includes bragging rights, their name on the Syracuse League Champion’s Plaque, three free RPM Raceway races as well as 50 percent off all races during the month of May. Second and third place finishers will also receive a trophy and free races. Scoring for the four-week league is based on qualifier and main event results and the grand prize winner will be decided by best combined four-week score. Pricing for RPM Raceway’s adult racing league is $185 for members, or $234 for non-members. Complimentary pizza and Monster Energy will be provided for racers fuel up prior to each race. Amateur local artists sought for exhibit Employees of Central New York businesses who are also visual artists on their own time will have the chance to exhibit their original works this spring through the CNY Arts 45th annual On My Own Time program. Produced annually by CNY Arts in partnership with Everson Museum of Art, the program gives organizations a platform to share and spotlight their employees’ often hidden creative talents. Employers of all sizes participate to promote the contributions of arts and culture in the local community and to demonstrate the value of creativity in the workplace. Volunteer arts professionals from Central New York will visit preliminary exhibits held at each participating company’s workplace this spring to select pieces from each for a collaborative exhibit at the Ever-
son of Art, opening Oct. 12. The finale exhibit includes works created by employees of well over a dozen organizations, and typically includes a diverse selection of paintings, ceramics, wood, metal, and glass work, jewelry, photography, sculpture, and textiles. On My Own Time is presented by CNY Arts in cooperation with Everson Museum of Arts and lead media sponsor WRVO Public Media, along with lead sponsors Upstate Medical University and Onondaga Community College. The registration deadline is April 30. Artists participate through their employer. For information about getting your company involved, visit cnyarts.org/programs/on-my-own-time, call 315.435.2162 or e-mail omot@cnyarts.org.

Through the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program This year, more than one million third graders in the 48 contiguous states have gotten hands-on gardening experience, growing colossal cabbages with high hopes to win “best in state” and receive a $1,000 scholarship towards education from Bonnie Plants. Samantha Brown, of Syracuse, was the New York state winner. Brown, pictured, grew a beautiful, 14-pound cabbage and was randomly selected by New York’s Agriculture Department. She is a student at Living Word Academy in Syracuse. For more information visit bonnieplants.com.

T
he Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) has extended the application deadline for the 2018 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition to March 30. This unique international research and design challenge for pre-college youth encourages scientific understanding of real-world environmental and energy use challenges. This year’s theme is “Solving Climate Change.”
High school teams across the nation and around the globe are challenged to identify and analyze specific problems associated with climate change in detail before designing a clean technology solution. The competition’s goal is to foster students’ deeper understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related concepts, recognize outstanding talent and prepare the next generation of glob-
ally competitive innovators. Monetary prizes are provided to the top 10 finalists with $10,000 awarded to the winner. The winning team will also be flown to Rome, Italy to be guest presenters at the World Congress on Climate Change in September 2018. Teams of young people from around the globe are urged to participate in the competition. For information or to submit an application,

Exhibit to highlight wildlife’s return to Onondaga Lake
L
ocal wildlife photographers will display colorful images of birds and other wildlife taken in recently restored and enhanced areas along the Onondaga Lake shoreline at the “Nature’s Resurgence at Onondaga Lake” photography exhibit March 24-25. The exhibit showcases the diverse range of species including snowy owl, hooded merganser, common loon, bald eagle and butterflies, such as the monarch, that have returned to Onondaga Lake. The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is hosting the exhibit in partnership with Audubon New York and Honeywell. The exhibit will take place at Honeywell’s Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, along the southwest lakeshore in Geddes. Admission is free, but a suggested donation of $5 is welcome. “Onondaga Lake is a story of conservation success and one that the entire Central New York community can be proud of,” said Chris Lajewski, center director, Montezuma Audubon Center. “Thanks to the hard work and commitment to conservation of Honeywell, Onondaga County, the Onondaga Lake Conservation
Corps, and hundreds of community volunteers, Onondaga Lake continues to thrive as an Important Bird Area that is home to songbirds, waterfowl, and birds of prey throughout the year. We are proud to showcase these amazing images that were captured by dedicated nature photographers who help us tell the story of nature’s resurgence at Onondaga Lake.” The exhibit runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors will meet the photographers who captured the images and have an opportunity to look for birds in their natural habitat with experts from the Montezuma Audubon Center and Onondaga Audubon Society. As part of the Onondaga Lake cleanup, Honeywell has restored about 90 acres of wetlands and about 1.1 million native plants are being planted. The restored wetlands have become home to more than 250 wildlife species. More than 120 unique bird species have been identified in and around Onondaga Lake, including several species categorized as threatened or of special interest in New York State. Pied-billed grebe, northern
“Hooded Merganser” by Greg Craybas. harrier, and bald eagle are among the notable bird species that have returned. “Onondaga Lake has become a destination for humans and wildlife alike. The trail system has brought the people and the wetland restoration has brought the wildlife,” said John Savage, a local photographer who
will exhibit at the event. “It is amazing to see our national bird, the bald eagle, soaring in the skies and perching in the trees along the lakeshore. A balance of man and nature that should be both celebrated and guarded.” The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps seeks
to inspire future stewards of Onondaga Lake and its watershed through a handson, experience-based program that offers citizens and organizations the opportunity to participate in activities that help restore and sustain Onondaga Lake and its value as an IBA. Since its formation in 2012,

League 5k Run/Walk Aug. 11 – Third Annual Run for Your Health 5k Run/Walk Sept. 29 – Third Annual Go Bucs 5k Run/Walk “We are very excited about the new Make It Happen 20k Race Series and the community partnership between Oswego County Autism Task Force, Oswego Little League, Oswego Health Foundation and the Buc Boosters,” said Make It Happen Committee Member and Buc Booster President Sean Callen. “This unique racing series will allow runners through Central New York with an opportunity to compete in four well established events throughout the upcoming racing season, while challenging for an overall series championship.” “Our planning is well underway for 2018 and we will continue to work through details and new ideas to make this an awesome event series year after year,” he said.
The first race of the “Make It Happen 20k Race Series”, the “3rd Annual OutRun Autism 5k & Break of Autism Champions”, will kick off April 7th at 8:30 a.m. with a Kids Fun Run, followed by the 5k event all taking place in front of the Press Box Restaurant on East First Street in Oswego, with awards to follow. The event, which has drawn nearly 100 runners and walkers annually, will support the Oswego County Autism Task Force (OCATF), a non-profit organization that seeks to enhance the lives of those touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Oswego County. The participants of the 5k race represent families, caregivers, teachers, service providers, siblings, friends, and children themselves on the Autism spectrum.
