honoring local heroes NSBC’s The Gathering Place to celebrate law enforcement, first responders May 21

Every time there is an accident, disaster, crime or medical emergency Central New Yorkers can count on fellow community members who are specially trained to come to their aid. These special people, firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel, also known as first responders, are the heroes who put their own lives at risk to help others. At 10:30 a.m. on May 21, The Gathering Place at North Syracuse Baptist Church (NSBC) will host their 20th annual “Law Enforcement – First Responders Sunday” to honor those who put others’ safety before their own on a daily basis. Retired Undersheriff Warren Darby, Senior Pastor Dr. George Miller and the church’s congregation invite any members of law enforcement agencies, fire departments and EMS agencies, along with their families, to join them for this special service recognizing and thanking them for their selfless sacrifice in protecting the community, to be held during National

of support from the community. “You don’t get a lot of thank-yous because of the kind of work you have to do,” he said. “Although, for the most part, we have great people living in Central New York, who are mostly helpful, supportive and comply; that’s all we [in law enforcement] ask.” Marshall said such a service is especially important given the current climate for law enforcement. “Police officers these days aren’t getting a fair shake overall from a lot of people,” he said. “We really want to show respect for police and first responders. They save lives and protect us. They put their lives on the line for us, and they don’t really get respect for that regularly. We as a church and as a community want to change that.” A luncheon for the officers and first responders immediately following the service is provided by the FCPO. The Gathering Place at North Syracuse Baptist Church is located at 420 S. Main St., North Syracuse. For more information visit tgponline.org. Sarah Hall contributed to this story.

The Eldercare Foundation’s 10th annual “Gift of Age” Cabaret was held on Friday, April 7, in memory of the late Amelia Greiner, community advocate and founder of Home Aides of Central New York, a not-for-profit home healthcare agency affiliated with VNA Homecare that has been serving the aging members of our community since 1966. More than 120 guests gathered at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center to enjoy a gourmet meal and first-class entertainment by internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Alita Moses and the Chittenango High School Select Choir. The highlight of the evening, however, were the presentations of the annual Eldercare Appreciation Awards. The inaugural Amelia Greiner Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Peter Huntington, MD in honor of his dedication and commitment to Central New York and to the countless individuals he has inspired throughout his prestigious medical career. In the spirit of Home Aides of Central New York’s founder, he has given selflessly of his time and talents in service to the com-

munity. The Eldercare Employee Award was presented to Vilma Benjamin, a retired home health aide, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to caring for the elderly, ill and homebound. At the time of her retirement in 2016, she had provided more than 43,000 hours of compassionate care and earned a reputation for her generous and honorable character. The event raised more than $40,000 in support of the Foundation’s mission of enabling aging, ill and frail individuals to remain at home with dignity and independence. Major sponsors included Cygnus Management Foundation; The Hayner Hoyt Corporation; Kinney Drugs Foundation; Sutton Real Estate Company, LLC; and Welch Allyn. “We hold this event in the hope of raising our community’s compassion for aging individuals and their families,” said Anita P. Lombardi, chair of the Eldercare Foundation Board of Directors. “By recognizing the exemplary contributions of our honorees, we raise awareness of the importance of caring about, and caring for, our community’s elders.”

A ‘GROWING’ FAMILY Family Gardening Provides More Than a Bountiful Harvest By Melinda Myers

Gardeners know digging, planting, harvesting and even viewing a garden is good for the mind, body and spirit. It improves strength and flexibility, lowers blood pressure and elevates our mood. And this is true for all members of the family from the very young to the more seasoned. Plan on sharing these benefits with yours or a friend’s children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews this growing season. Children, and even adults, who grow their own vegetables are more likely to eat them. But gardening does even more to help our children. Research shows children exposed to the outdoors and gardening are more focused, have less issues with attention deficit and score better on tests. Girls exposed to gardens and green spaces are more confident and better able to handle peer pressure. Here are a few ways to make gardening with family more fun and memorable. Involve the whole family when planning the garden. Talk about the flowers everyone wants to grow and vegetables you all like to eat. Then break out the paper, old catalogs, scissors, crayons, pencils and rulers. Young children can cut out pictures of their favorite vegetables and flowers and glue them on the paper. Older children can draw the garden to scale on graph paper and plot their choices in the garden. Make your own plant markers. Once you decide on the plants you want to grow spend a rainy afternoon creating plant labels for the garden. Paint the name or a picture of the flower or vegetable on a flat rock, slat from a discarded mini blind, paint sticks or other recycled items.

Consider giving everyone his or her own garden space. Let them pick their own plants and be responsible for its maintenance. Design individual plots or divide larger beds into smaller sections. Or give each family member his or her own container. This is a great option when planting space and time are limited. And just about anything can be planted. An old 5-gallon bucket or washtub with holes drilled into the bottom, recycled nursery pots or a colorful raised planter make great gardens. Direct fast moving, small feet down the path and away from plants. Fun edging materials, mulched pathways or slightly raised beds help delineate pathways from gardens. This helps to keep children from trampling the plants. Grow some quick-maturing plants like radishes and lettuce that are ready to harvest in 30 to 45 days along with slower growers like watermelon and tomatoes. You will keep everyone interested if there is something growing, blooming and good to eat throughout the season. Reduce the risk of mistakes. Kids, like so many gardeners, suffer from “more is better syndrome. Avoid damage from overfertilization by using a low nitrogen organic fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com). It’s safe and won’t burn your plants even if the weather becomes hot and dry. And enlist my favorite “Pluck, drop and stomp pest management strategy. Teach children the difference between the good and bad insects and then have them burn off some excess energy as they implement the process. End the season with a harvest party. Use your homegrown produce to prepare a picnic or fancy dinner for family and friends. And be sure to use some of those beautiful flowers you grew to decorate the table.

Huge win for trails in New York state $200 million in final state budget will fund 750-mile Empire State Trail by 2020 It’s a dream come true for trail lovers! The final New York State FY18 budget includes $200 million in landmark funding to build the nation’s longest multi-use trail, the 750-mile Empire State Trail. With community members’ help, Parks and Trails New York has been advocating for a network of trails throughout the state since 1985, in particular through our Close the Gaps campaign, the completion of the Erie Canalway Trail, the Buffalo to Albany section of the Empire State Trail. And, this year, the budget allocates $77 million to the New York Power Authority to complete the remaining 20 percent of the 360-mile Erie Canalway Trail plus $123 million to the Hudson River Valley Greenway to complete the remaining 40 percent of the Hudson River Greenway between NYC and the Southern Adirondacks. The funding will also create bicycle-friendly enhancements to the onroad Bike Route 9, connecting the Empire State Trail to the

Canadian Border. The Empire State Trail will connect a rich network of state and national parks, historic sites and cultural amenities located along the route, including the Erie Canal, the Walkway Over the Hudson, the Saratoga National Historical Park, the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and New York, and the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. Once complete in 2020, the Empire State Trail will add 350 miles of new multi-use trail and on-road enhancements to the State’s existing network of trails and greenways, enhancing New York’s appeal as a destination for outdoor recreation and heritage tourism. The Trail will also bring new recreation and outdoor opportunities to hundreds of communities and millions of New Yorkers who live along the route, contributing substantially to local economies, public health and the state’s environment.

Author of children’s ‘Madeline’ books remembered at festival Oswego playwright pens World War I comedy For nearly two years, Rick Sivers has been reading over and over again the book, “My War With the United States,” contemplating how to turn it into a play. The book, written by Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the “Madeline” series of children’s books, details his time in the U.S. Army while stationed at Fort Ontario and other locations. But, it was the Oswego experiences that concerned Sivers, and with permission from Ludwig’s daughter, Barbara Bemelmans, the adaptation of the book to the stage was undertaken. “My War With The United States” is a look into the daily life of Ludwig Bemelmans in the summer and fall of 1917 at Fort Ontario. “Ludwig did all kinds of things that got him into trouble,” says Sivers, “and that makes for a fun script. Audiences will love the antics on stage, some of it reminiscent of Marx Brothers’ comedy. Theatergoers will need to prepare themselves for gun shots in a hospital ward, a ballet gone wrong and soldiers just learning what Army life is all about.” The play is being presented as part of the Bemelmans Festival in Oswego, which runs from May 12-21 and includes are variety of events including a

children’s “Madeline” parade, historical presentations about World War I, walking tour, art exhibit by local residents, and a fun day on May 20 with free admission to Fort Ontario. The cast includes Matthew Fleming, Pablo Mendoza, Bev Murtha, Don Vanouse, Patrick Carmen, Marianne Natoli, Juan LaManna, Ligia LaManna, and Matthew Barnhart, among others. “My War With The United States” is the second play in the Oswego Players’ 2017 season and will be presented in the Frances Marion Brown Theater in the Oswego Civic Arts Center on May 13, 19 and 20 at 8 pm and May 14 and 21 at 2 pm. For reservations, contact the Oswego Players’ box office at 315-343-5138.
