stage Musical comedy classic ‘42nd Street’ comes to Oncenter
T
he quintessential backstage musical comedy classic “42nd Street” will play the The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater from May 17 to19. Directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award winning Best Revival., “42nd Street” is the song and dance fable of Broadway, with an American Dream story and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re In The Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” “Dames,” “I Only Have Eyes For You” and, of course, “42nd Street.” The play tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical “Pretty Lady.” When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star. Tickets are on sale now at the Oncenter Box Office at 435-2121, Famous Artists at 424-8210 and Ticketmaster at 800745-3000. For more information visit BroadwayInSyracuse.com.

From the American Stroke Association
May is American Stroke Month Five F.A.S.T. things you should know about stroke Submitted by Kristy Smorol Communications Director
You don’t need superpowers to be a hero when it comes to stroke, you just need to pay attention to the risk factors and know the warning signs. “Stroke is largely preventable and treatable,” said Dr. Satish Krishnamurthy, director of minimally invasive neurosurgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association advisory board member. “The best way to beat a stroke before it damages your brain is to never have one - about 80 percent of strokes are preventable. The second best way to beat a stroke before it damages your brain is to identify one immediately when it occurs and call 911.” For American Stroke Month this May, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Medtronic, offers five things
everyone should know to be a Stroke Hero and stop the nation’s No. 5 killer in its tracks. 1. Anyone Can Have a Stroke (Even Superheroes) Some stroke patients don’t “look the part” and they may not have traditional stroke risk factors like high blood pressure. Stroke is more common in older people, but young adults, teens, children, babies and even the unborn can be victims. 2. High Blood Pressure is Public Enemy # 1 for Stroke About 80 million Americans have high blood pressure, yet about half with the condition do not have it under control. Three out of four people who have a first stroke report blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg, making blood pressure the most important controllable risk factor for stroke. 3. Some are at advanced risk While stroke is a leading cause of death for all Americans, African-Americans are
at an increased risk, and are twice as likely to have a stroke and are more likely to have a stroke at a younger age. 4. Stroke is largely treatable Clot-busting drugs and medical devices like stent retrievers have made stroke largely treatable, but most patients need to get to an appropriate hospital to be evaluated and treated within 3 to 4.5 hours of the first symptom. With nearly 2 million brain cells dying every minute during a stroke, there’s no time to phone a friend, take a nap, or wait until Uber stops surging. Calling 911 is the best call for stroke. 5. Friends usually save friends from stroke You’ve heard the saying “Fast friends.” If you’re having a stroke, that’s exactly who you need nearby. Two out of three times, it’s a bystander making the decision to call 911 or seek treatment on behalf of someone suffering a stroke. To remember the most common stroke warning signs and what action to take, learn F.A.S.T. If
you see F-Face drooping, A-Arm weakness or S-Speech difficulty, it’s T-Time to call 911. The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, launched Together to End Stroke with inaugural sponsor Covidien, now Medtronic, in 2013 to elevate the message that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable. Like the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, Medtronic is committed to improving the lives of stroke patients. Over the past three years, Together to End Stroke has helped boost stroke warning sign recognition, which leads to more people getting to treatment in time. We are happy to continue our support of this important initiative to raise awareness of stroke. For more information about stroke and to learn how to be a Stroke Hero for American Stroke Month, visit StrokeAssociation.org.

‘Incredibly successful homestand’ Chiefs games on cable TV
JEFF IRIZARRY PHOTO
Syracuse Chiefs teammates congratulate Jason Martinson on May 1 after his walk-off single in the tenth inning to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-4, at NBT Bank Stadium. Number 15 is outfielder Brian Goodwin who slugged a home run earlier in the game.
On a roll, the Syracuse Chiefs string together six wins in a row By Russ Tarby
As April turned to May the Syracuse Chiefs rolled merrily along. After sweeping the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders April 22-24 here at NBT Bank Stadium, the Chiefs surged into first place in the International League North Division by stringing together an impressive six-game winning streak. In fact, Manager Billy Gardner Jr.’s Syracuse ball club had prevailed in nine of its past ten games going back to April 22. The victories featured solid pitching performances, consistent hitting, timely bunting and stolen bases and rousing comebacks climaxed by late-inning walk-offs. Four of the wins came against the Pawtucket Red
Sox, and the Chiefs took two more from the Rochester Red Wings, top farm club of the Minnesota Twins. Even when the streak was snapped on May 4 in a rare mid-week day game against the Rochester Red Wings, Syracuse still showed some strengths. For instance, righthanded starter Taylor Hill went six-and-two-thirds innings and struck out six. At the plate, eight of the nine Chiefs batters knocked base hits – but failed to knock in runs twice after loading the bases with no outs. The biggest crowd of the season – 6,931 mostly students enjoying “Education Day” – witnessed the 8-2 defeat. Despite the May 4 loss, Chiefs broadcaster Eric Gallanty reminded his radio listeners of the big picture. “It ended on a down note,” Gallanty said over The Score 1260-AM, “but there’s no denying that this was an incredibly successful homestand.”
Time Warner Cable SportsChannel is scheduled to televise 24 Chiefs games during the 2015 season – 10 home games and 14 away games at Buffalo, Rochester and Durham. The telecasts began May 6 from Buffalo, and the first televised home game of the season will be at 6:30 p.m. May 20 when Syracuse hosts Norfolk Tides. For the second consecutive year, play-by-play duties will be handled by Kevin Brown, while Chiefs Wall of Famer Steve Grilli returns as analyst. The complete broadcast schedule is as follows, with home dates in bold: 5/13 @ Rochester — 7:05 p.m. 5/15 @ Rochester — 2:05 p.m. 5/20 vs. Norfolk — 6:35 p.m. 6/2 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 6/3 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 6/5 vs. Buffalo — 1:05 p.m. 6/17 vs. Columbus — 7:05 p.m. 7/2 vs. Rochester — 7:05 p.m. 7/3 vs. Rochester — 7:05 p.m. 7/4 @ Durham — 7:05 p.m. 7/5 @ Durham — 7:05 p.m. 7/6 @ Durham — 7:05 p.m. 7/15 vs. Durham — 7:05 p.m. 7/21 @ Rochester — 7:05 p.m. 7/22 @ Rochester — 7:05 p.m. 7/28 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 7/29 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 7/30 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 7/31 @ Buffalo — 7:05 p.m. 8/3 vs. Buffalo — 6:35 p.m. 8/4 vs. Buffalo — 6:35 p.m. 8/9 vs. Rochester — 6:35 p.m. 8/11 vs. Rochester — 6:35 p.m.
Indians vs. Chiefs
The Chiefs host the Indianapolis Indians at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12. The Indians are the Triple-A farmhands of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Because the Chiefs is the top affiliate of the Washington Nationals, pitchers will be batting in these games. After three games in Rochester and three more in Allentown, Pa., the Chiefs return home at 6:35 p.m. on May 19 against the Norfolk Tides. Ticket prices at NBT Bank Stadium range from $6 to $12, and parking costs $5; syracusechiefs.com; 474-7833. All Chiefs games can be heard live over WSKO, The Score 1260, on the AM radio dial and online at thescore1260.com. The play-by-play announcers are Kevin Brown and Eric Gallanty. Contact the writer at russtarby@aol.com.

Grill smart: Watch what you heat
N
ow that it has finally started to warm up, many New Yorkers are enjoying their barbecues and other outdoor amenities. And while gas grills, portable fire pits, and patio heaters make outdoor spaces comfortable and desirable places to gather… it’s important that they are used properly. The New York Propane Gas Association helps consumers keep grilling season safe with an interactive online module on grilling from the Propane Education & Research Council at www.propanesafety.com/grilling-safety. Consumers learn proper grilling procedures using propane, in English or Spanish, and it takes less than 10 minutes to complete! Safety for Kids – The grilling area should be designated as a “No Play Zone,” keeping kids and pets away from the equipment. To help kids learn about gas grill safety, the Propane Education and Research Council has launched the fun interactive website propanekids.com. Some key safety tips include:
Ventilation
Always keep the lid open when lighting your grill. Don’t close it until you are sure the grill is lit. Keep the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, at least ten feet away from the house—and at least three feet away from trees and shrubs. Never cover the bottom of the grill with foil - it can restrict air circulation. Always use and store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright position. After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately. While transporting the cylinder, keep your vehicle ventilated and the valve closed
or capped. Do not leave the cylinder in your vehicle.
Firing up the grill safely
Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. And never use starter fluid with propane grills. Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder, and keep all flammable materials away from the grill. If the grill does not ignite within ten seconds, turn off the gas, keep the lid open and wait five minutes before trying again. If the igniter fails to light the grill after two or three tries, turn off the gas and replace the igniter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects or food grease. Never attempt to repair, clean or clear blockages on a hot grill.
General safety tips
Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Never leave a hot grill unattended. Never attempt to repair the tank valve or the appliance yourself. See a propane gas dealer or a qualified appliance repair person. Be sure to locate your model number and the manufacturer’s consumer inquiry phone number and write them on the front page of your manual. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder vale, turning it to the right (clockwise). Immediately leave the area and call 911 or your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, have a qualified service technician inspect your cylinder. For more information on the value and safe uses of propane, visit nypropane.com and propanecomfort.com.
Looking to renew your home decor this spring? You’ve been bitten by the decorating bug, and you’re ready to redecorate the major living areas in your home. You don’t have a lot of money to spare, so you’re going to have to cut costs where you can. Not to worry. With some thought and careful shopping, you can create beautiful rooms on a small budget. When shopping, you want to put the bulk of your budget toward any large furniture pieces you need. Don’t cut corners when it comes to these. Sure, you may save some money now, but you will have to shell out more later when the furniture breaks and

of paint and trim. Both are relatively inexpensive, and you can use them to transform almost anything from drab white walls to plain side tables. Add drama to your living room walls by wrapping a chair rail around the middle and painting the upper half beige and the bottom half chocolate brown. Dress up your plain side tables with some molding and light blue paint, and set them against the freshly painted brown walls for a pop of color. Along with paint and trim, fabric is another inexpensive fix. Don’t have any art? Stretch a piece of interesting fabric across a canvas, staple it into place and hang it up for instant artwork. Need new pillows? Make some out of some fabric and batting, or sew slipcovers for the ones you already have. Drapes ragged at the bottom? Cut off the damaged ends and sew on new bands of fabric. When shopping for fabric for your rooms, start at the rem-
nant table. Chances are you will find exactly what you need for all of your sewing projects at a fraction of the cost. Combine various patterns, styles and textures for a unique look. When it comes to accessories, think outside of the box and look for bargains. Don’t be afraid to use the unexpected. Go ahead and bring in that old garden gate and hang it on the wall. Take advantage of sales, clearance aisles and bargain bins. Shop at flea markets and thrift stores, and remember, you can redo almost anything you find. See a chandelier you like that’s tarnished? Go over it with some tarnish remover or give it a quick dash of spray paint. Add some new shades, and voila, you’ve got a new light at a low cost. Decorating on a shoestring budget is not hard. It just takes some clever thinking and some fine-tuned shopping. Good luck and have fun.

you have to replace it. When possible, buy multifunctional furniture. Instead of a sectional, buy a sofa bed that you can use for extra guests. Should you need some smaller furniture pieces, consider buying them used and redoing them. Once you have the furniture all set, study your living areas carefully and look for inexpensive fixes. Instead of replacing your carpet, consider redoing the hardwood floors underneath. If you need to hire a professional for the job but can’t afford it, consider painting the floors until you can save enough money to have them refinished. Instead of papering your walls, paint them to look like linen using a faux finish. Instead of replacing your cabinets, have them refaced or paint them yourself. Add some new hardware, and they will be good as new. One of the easiest fixes involves the use

Create your own wildflower oasis
H
By Tresa Erickson
ave you ever caught sight of a patch of wildflowers growing along the side of a road? Lovely, wasn’t it? Have you thought about creating your own wildflower patch? Wildflower gardens are like any other garden. They take time to plant and cultivate into the mass of loveliness spotted roadside, but once they take off, you will have a lovely garden for years to come. While wildflowers are hardy and tend to grow without assistance, they do take some work to start. It is not enough to drop some seeds onto the ground like Mother Nature does roadside. You need a site with partial to full sun, and you need to prep the site accordingly. So, grab your garden tools and prepare to clear the area. How you go about clearing the site will depend on the size of it. If it is a small area, you may be able to dig out the weeds by hand. If it is a rather large area, you may want to mow it and cover it with plastic for a couple of months to smother the weeds or apply an herbicide to kill the weeds more quickly. When the area is cleared, you will need to till it and apply some herbicide spray. This will remove any weeds remaining. Then you can rake and level the soil. Now you are ready to plant the seeds. Choose species native to your area. Wildflower seeds can be tiny, so mix yours with sand to make them easier to plant. Scatter the mix evenly across the site and rake it in lightly. Then water the area thoroughly and cover it with straw to keep the birds away. With regular watering, the seeds should germinate in 10 to 21 days and bloom in five to six weeks. To help fill in the garden and keep weeds at bay, you may want to plant some grasses. Hardy fescues, such as Kentucky 31 tall fescue grass, work well in wildflower gardens. In the beginning, you will need to weed and water your wildflower garden regularly, reseed it periodically and mow it down each fall. Once the flowers get established, there will be very little maintenance to keep your oasis intact. Add some benches, weed now and then, and enjoy!

Their speed nearly defies the laws of physics, they travel a great distance to amaze you and they are one of nature’s most interesting creatures, they are hummingbirds. These birds that appear as blurs are joy to watch and you can attract them with certain flowers. So, if you like to grow flowers and want to witness nature’s flying speedsters, here’s how. First, who are these blurry winged wonders? There are more than 300 species of hummingbirds and they are only found in the southeastern Alaska to southern Chile. Though they are not indigenous to North America, but they do visit every year, and that’s when you can attract them. However, before we get to that, a few more fascinating facts about hummingbirds. Hummingbirds flap their wings 90 times per second. Their name comes from the sound made by their wings, moving at that speed. Due to the speed of their wings, their heartbeat is estimated at more than 1,200 beats per minute. Their maneuverability is amazing. They can fly forward, backward, up, down and even upside down. They can hover, which is when they are mainly seen, by flapping in a figure eight pattern. Their diet consists of nectar, tree sap, insects and pollen. High-performance athletes require large amounts of nutrition to fuel their bodies. The same is true of the hummingbird. Because they expend so much energy with these feats of speed and aerial acrobatics, they require a lot of food. This is where you can entice them. Plant your blooms in a sunny area and make sure they flower from spring to fall. This will keep them coming back as long as possible. Hummingbirds are attracted to color, not scent. The flowers you plant should be bright, colorful and have tubular flowers. Some of the best flowers to attract these winged
wonders are; coral bills, nasturtium, foxglove, bleeding heart, bee balm, hollyhock and trumpet creeper, just to name a few. When planting your flowers make sure they are easily accessible. The best way to do this is to layer them either shortest to tallest, front to back or shortest on the outside to highest in the middle of the bunch. If you don’t have a green thumb you can purchase a hummingbird feeder. If you choose this option you will need to make your own nectar. It’s easy, just boil water and stir in sugar. The ratio should be 1 part granulated sugar to 4 parts of water. This sweet concoction can be stored in your refrigeration for two weeks. Because hummingbirds are attracted to color, some people will say to add food coloring to your nectar. This can actually harm the birds, so don’t do it. Your feeder itself will be brightly colored and will serve as the attraction. However, hummingbirds are not the only ones who will enjoy the nectar you created. Both bees and ants will try their best to steal the sweets. Ants will have a clear path if you hang your feeder from a tree. If you can hang it from your house or other structure, it might help keep the ants away. As for bees, keep the outsider of your feeder clean. As the birds suck out the substance, they will spill on the feeder. Keep this area wiped down, thus keeping the bees away. You can also put out a saucer of nectar away from the feeder. This should serve as a distraction to the bees and keep them away from the hummingbirds feast. Hummingbirds are tiny wonders that are always fascinating to watch. Consider attracting them to your yard, you won’t be disappointed.

Jambalaya Jazz Band cooks in Syracuse May 22 Concert staged in memory of Bix Beiderbecke and Spiegle Willcox Buffalo trombonist Ray Skalski has come a long way since he performed with a big band conducted by Mitch Miller. For the past 22 years, he has led the Jambalaya Jazz Band which has performed at the Earlyjazz Festival in Ohio and the Hot Steamed Jazz Festival in Connecticut. Along the way, Skalski has toured Europe three times with various groups. He’ll bring his Jambalaya Jazz Band to Syracuse to play a concert hosted by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Pensabene’s Casa Grande, 135 State Fair Blvd., on the city’s West End. Admission costs $12 for JASS members, $15 for others. The May 22 performance will be JASS’ annual Bix Beiderbecke-
Spiegle Willcox Memorial Concert. Beiderbecke, the ill-fated cornetist from Iowa, was born March 10, 1903 and died in 1931 in Queens at age 28. Willcox, the long-lived trombonist from Cortland, was born May 2, 1903 and died in 1999 at age 96. In the mid-1920s Bix and Spiegle both played in the brass section of the legendary Jean Goldkette Orchestra. Beiderbecke is best known for such tunes as “Singin’ the Blues” and “Riverboat Shuffle,” while Willcox’s theme song was “Poor Butterfly.” In the 1990s, Skalski performed alongside Spiegle and the two slide trombonists became friends. The Jambalaya Band follows Spiegle’s footsteps by specializing in rare oldtime, Chicago-style traditional jazz.
Besides Ray Skalski on trombone, the combo includes cornetist Tim Clarke, clarinetist Ron Joseph, bassist Randy Stiztzinger, guitarist/ banjoist Warren Stirtzinger, pianist Rod Blumenau and drummer Tom Kasperek. Whenever Jambalaya performs, audiences hear echoes of Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden and Eddie Condon in tunes such as “Panama,” Jazz Me Blues” and “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue.” For JASS information, call 6520547, or visit jasscny.org. To contact Pensabene’s, call 4660312. The Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional New Orleans jazz.

‘Experience Beyond Measure’ Tickets on sale now for Symphoria’s 2016-17 season
S
ymphoria, the world-class symphony orchestra in Central New York, announced that single tickets are on sale for its 201617 season. The current season has sold out 10 out of 21 concerts to date, with six performances remaining, one of which is almost at capacity. Symphoria’s fourth full season is expected to be an “Experience Beyond Measure” with more venues and variety, including 27 concerts in five performance series: Masterworks, Casual, Pops, Spark and Kids. The season includes more concert performance times, stars such as multiplatinum-selling vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway, Cherish the Ladies, the return of cirque performers, music of famous movie superheroes and villains, collaborations with local singing and dancing groups, and more. “We’re very excited to offer yet another fantastic concert lineup to the community,” said Lawrence Loh, music director of Symphoria. “We hope our guests have noticed that whether you’re a fan of wellknown classical music or you simply enjoy a night out on the town listening to or watching inspiring performances, we will have something for you to enjoy. The 2016-17 season in particular will not disappoint as we carefully selected a range of concerts.” The 2016-17 season opens Sept. 10 with the first of eight Masterworks concerts, performed at the Crouse Hinds
Theater, featuring Grammy Awardwinning Garrick Ohlsson playing Rachmaninoff ’s Third Piano Concerto along with other Russian favorites, with Loh on the podium. Other Masterworks concerts will include both beloved classics and guest appearances by YouTube sensation and pianist Valentina Lisitsa, and renowned cellist Zuill Bailey, among others. St. Paul’s Cathedral will again host the Casual Series in an intimate setting with four Sunday afternoon concerts ranging from “A Trip Down the Danube” celebrating Viennese music to “Selections from Amadeus: The Music of Mozart.” The Pops Series, at the Crouse Hinds Theater, will feature more performances to accommodate demand. “Cirque de la Symphonie” returns for two shows next year, bringing the magic of cirque and aerial performers to the stage. In addition, there are concerts inspired by music from Barbra Streisand and Emerald Isles favorites, as well as a stunning event showcasing the symphony playing scores from famous superhero and villain movies. Finally, the “Home for the Holidays” Pops is back again with three concerts, one being a matinee, in December featuring the Syracuse Pops Chorus, the Syracuse Children’s Chorus and special guests. Moving out of the concert hall and into the community, the Spark Series
offers three venue-specific concerts: at the Landmark Theater, linking some of the most famous Halloween music with a haunted evening of fun; Sky Armory, pairing the Symphoria string orchestra with dessert offerings from Sky Armory’s pastry chef; and the newly renovated former Hotel Syracuse, exploring music from a period of tumultuous change between 1912 and 1925. All three 2015-16 Spark concerts sold out this season. Symphoria’s Kids Series is fun for the whole family with three musical performances that offer video, narration and hands-on experiences. As always, children age 18 and younger are admitted free to Symphoria performances. Single tickets and season subscriptions can be purchased at Symphoria’s box office 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 234 Harrison St., Syracuse, by calling 299-5598 ext. 201, and by visiting ExperienceSymphoria.org. Single tickets for the 2016-17 concerts range from $20 to $80. Admission is free for kids 18 and younger and $5 for college students with a valid student identification. First-time season subscriptions save up to 50 percent off single-ticket prices. In addition, subscription FlexPacks are available to offer more options to patrons who prefer to select their own mix of concert programs. If patrons buy tickets to four or more concerts, they will receive
25 percent off each ticket. A 20 percent group discount is also available for parties over eight attending one concert. For a full list of 2016-17 concerts and details, visit ExperienceSymphoria.org. Symphoria’s current season continues through June 4 with a Kids concert, a final Pops concert, “Star Wars and a Galaxy Far Away,” and three Masterworks concerts. Due to popularity, Symphoria added a matinee performance of “Star Wars and a Galaxy Far Away” May 21 at 1:30 p.m. before the 7:30 p.m. performance. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite intergalactic characters. Symphoria recently announced that it will celebrate Independence Day with a special performance at the Lakeview Amphitheater on the Fourth of July at 8 p.m. There will be a ticketed VIP event and a fireworks display. This concert is part of the orchestra’s summer program performing free concerts at various parks throughout the region.
About Symphoria
Symphoria is a fully professional orchestra serving Syracuse and Central New York. It is one of only two co-op orchestras in the U.S., founded by nearly 50 members of the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, which was considered one of America’s top 50 orchestras.

‘Gift of Age’ Cabaret held
The ninth annual “Gift of Age” Cabaret was held on Friday, April 22, to benefit the Eldercare Foundation, a division of VNA Homecare. Funds raised by the foundation support the work of Home Aides of Central New York, a notfor-profit home healthcare agency affiliated with VNA Homecare that has been serving the aging members of our community since 1966. More than 150 guests from the local community enjoyed entertainment by singer/pianistTony DeSare and LeMoyne College a cappella group Fermata Nowhere. The highlight of the evening, however, were the awards presented to James Hall, Timothy Lavallee and Honor Flight Syracuse. Eldercare Achiever Awards were presented to VNA Homecare Physical Therapist Timothy Lavallee and his patient, James Hall. Lavallee believes the
success of caring for someone at home goes beyond clinical care and extends to the patient’s emotional, social and mental well-being. With that in mind, he assisted Hall, a World War II veteran, in applying for Honor Flight Syracuse’s fifth mission in April, 2015. Upon his acceptance, Hall chose Lavallee, himself a veteran of the Air National Guard, as his Honor Flight Guardian and, together, the men embarked on a once-ina-lifetime trip to our Nation’s capitol. This shared experience solidified a bond between patient and clinician that has grown into a treasured friendship that will last a lifetime. The Eldercare Community Champion Award was presented to Honor Flight Syracuse. Through their mission of honoring America’s veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C. to visit the national memorials dedicat-

ed to their sacrifice and service, Honor Flight Syracuse shows our elders the respect and admiration they so deserve. The private, not-for-profit organization is one of more than 130 regional hubs of the National Honor Flight Network, whose current focus is veterans of World War II and any war veteran with a terminal illness. The program has also begun to Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. Veterans may apply for an upcoming mission at honorflightsyracuse.org. “We hold this event in the hope of raising our community’s compassion for aging individuals and their families,” said Anita P. Lombardi, chair of the Eldercare Foundation Board of Directors. “By recognizing the exemplary contributions of our honorees, we raise awareness of the importance of caring about, and caring for, our community elders.”
