Springtime celebration Shearing Festival set for May 26-27
T
his year Springside Farm is moving its annual Shearing Festival on May 26 and 27 over to 1850 Rte. 91, the farm’s pumpkin and Christmas tree farm. Come for the first “harvest of the summer season – fleece! Watch the sheep and alpacas get their haircuts, take a wagon ride around the Christmas tree farm and enjoy unlimited zipline rides. New this year – a brand-new fleet of pedal cars, all sizes for all ages. There are new bunnies to pet, Otie the donkey, those friendly (and tricky) goats, baby chicks and of course, the mosh pit of loving little lambs to cuddle. Artisans and vendors, traditional and new, will be here to greet you, and spinners will be busy turning fleece into yarn – but will not be too busy to answer questions and let you try yourself. Fritz Loomis, the chainsaw carver, also returns, along with Eric the Beeman. Lamb speidies, apple fritters, cider donuts and the usual fare available at reasonable prices. This location has become the center of fun for patrons of all ages (plus our barns at the livestock farm are too full of hay to accommodate shenanigans!) If you’ve never been to the fall festivals, you will be in for a lot of fun. If you have, well, you know there is always something new every season. Admission is $6 per person, children 2 and under are free. Handicap and stroller accessible, ample free parking. Submitted photos

Cnyspca pet of the week
Apache needs a home By Dee Schaefer and Donna Newman
If Apache didn’t have bad luck, he’d have no luck at all! He came in as a stray with a broken leg. With a plate and pins that injury has healed, but he is also heartworm positive. We are treating the heartworm and he’s responding well. He’s loving and active, and would prefer to have someone home most of the day. We are looking for a foster to adopt situation, so that the medical costs will fall on us for his treatment. Despite his travails, Apache loves people and has a zest for life! Apache is hoping that you’ll be his good luck charm! If you want a loving sidekick to acompany you on life’s journey, Apache is the guy for you! For more information, visit cnyspca.org, like us on Facebook, or call us at 315454-4479. Photo by Amelia Beamish

80 Years and Growing
Chittenango Garden Club celebrates 80th anniversary On Nov. 22, 1938, 29 ladies met and organized the Chittenango Garden Club. Now celebrating it’s 80th Anniversary, the garden club is a group of individuals who share a love of plants and gardening, civic beautification and conservation of resources. The club has been a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State from inception. The objectives and purposes of the club are the study of horticulture and related subjects: the pursuit of projects contributing to the beautification of the village of Chittenango and participation in and support of other appropriate community projects. These include planting and maintaining a variety of gardens, planters and flower boxes throughout the village, including Dr West Park, Welcome Garden Between Route 5 and Edwin Street, Stickles Park, American Legion and The Canal Museum. Many of these serve as points of welcome along the various roads entering Chittenango. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Chittenango Library, except January and February. Members share experiences, expand horticultural knowledge, and hear authori-
tative guest speakers. There are currently 39 club members. The club will hold its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in Stickles Park at the intersection of routes 5 and 13 in the village of Chittenango. Plants for sale will include a good variety of perennials, annuals, hanging plants and vegetable starts. For many years the club has held an annual holiday bazaar with a gardening/horticulture theme. This year it will be held on November 4 at the American Legion/ Parks and Rec Building on Legion Drive. Look for flyers and info on the Village sign as the date nears. The objective of the garden club as it celebrates is 80th anniversary is to bring more attention to the work it does in town and to encourage more gardeners to join. So many people don’t realize the garden club is for everyone no matter what their gardening interests or experience. For information on the garden club, plant sale, and other garden club activities go to the club’s Facebook page (search: Chittenango Garden Club) or contact Geri Bellotti, membership chairperson, at 315 263-4464.

Buffalo’s best here May 20 Fredtown Stompers will play at Mo’s Pit BBQ By Russ Tarby The Fredtown Stompers will make their Central New York debut at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, playing a concert at Mo’s Pit BBQ, 5600 Newport Road, in Camillus. Admission costs $12 for JASS members, $15 for all others. The concert is sponsored by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse; jasscny.org. The Fredtown Stompers began as an ensemble of students from The State University of New York at Fredonia in January 2006. The band performs traditional Dixieland and hot jazz hits that span from old classics to nontraditional modern staples. The septet features Sean Ebert on trumpet, Ralph DeMarco on tenor sax, Kyle Ohlson on baritone sax, Ed Croft on guitar, Brian DeJesus on bass and Jamie Sunshine on drums. Vocals are generally delivered by Ebert, Sauers and Croft. Mo’s Pit BBQ is located in the same historic building as the defunct McNamara’s Pub, which hosted JASS concerts and jam sessions over the past 20 years. Operated by restaurateur “Mo” Morrissey, Mo’s sits just outside the Camillus business district at 5600 Newport Road, easily accessed from routes 690 and 695. Contact Mo’s at 315-708-0888, or visit mospitbbq. com/. Two years ago, voters in the third annual JazzBuffalo Poll chose the Fredtown Stompers as the Queen City’s best traditional jazz group. More than 2,200 ballots were cast. The Fredtown Stompers is a sevenpiece combo founded in 2006 by trumpeter Sean Ebert and clarinetist Melissa Sauers. The JazzBuffalo voters
also cited the Stompers’ appearance at the 2016 Lewiston Jazz Festival as the “Most Memorable Local Jazz Performance.” JazzBuffalo is the d.b.a. and brand name for the Greater Buffalo Jazz Society which was founded four years ago by musician Tony Zambito as a public non-profit organization to nurture jazz in Western New York state; jazzbuffalo.org.
New barbecue joint
Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse fans should feel right at home at the May 20 Fredtown Stompers concert. Mo’s Pit BBQ is located in the same historic building as the defunct McNamara’s Pub, which hosted JASS concerts and jam sessions for many of the past 20 years or so. Operated by restaurateur Kevin Morrissey, Mo’s sits just outside the Camillus business district at 5600 Newport Road, easily accessed from routes 690 and 695. Mo’s is not your typical corporate or franchise operation. Mo’s is a Mom and Pop business where the owners cook the food, wait on tables and wash the dishes. “At Mo’s we take pride in our authentic pit-smoked meats, inhouse made BBQ sauces and homemade sides,” Morrissey said. “Our wood-fired smoker is right outside our back door.” Mo’s Pit BBQ began in 2007, but its roots began many years earlier. Founder and current Pit Master Kevin “Mo” Morrissey owned a pizza shop from 1988-1999. One day in 1997, Kevin picked up a copy of the cookbook “Smoke and Spice” by Cheryl and Bill Jamison. Mo’s menu features burgers, barbecued pork and chicken sandwiches, brick oven pizza, wings, ribs, brisket and corn bread muffins.

Apple trees now blooming statewide Here’s a sure sign of spring: More than 11 million apple trees across New York state are beginning to bloom! Each year at this time the New York Apple Association (NYAA) announces the start of bloom season on behalf of NYAA members - the 500 commercial apple growers of New York state who produce, on average, 29.5 million bushels of apples annually, making New York the second largest appleproducing state in the U.S. “Temperatures have warmed enough statewide to coax blossoms from their winter sleep,” said NYAA President Cynthia Haskins. “Apple orchards are turning into seas of pink buds opening into white flowers. It is a sight to see!” Blossoms are currently appearing in the Hudson Valley followed by those in Western New York and the Lake Champlain area. “The different regions of the state are usually no more than 10 days apart from each other in the process,” said Haskins. “The bloom season will be over with soon so get out and see what makes New York apples spectacular!” “New York apples have a character and a distinct flavor that comes from nature and the right conditions coming together in just the right way,” said Haskins, add-
ing “…no other part of the country has quite what New York has when it comes to an ideal mix of climate, geography and rich glacial soils – the essential ingredients needed to create the extraordinary flavor of a New York apple.” In all, 26 new and classic New York apple varieties are grown in New York (including some varieties that are exclusive to New York) and are sold at retail. Dozens of other varieties commonly referred to as “heirloom” varieties are also grown here and are available at farm markets and at you-pick orchards. “It’s likely that New York grows more varieties than other states but one thing we know for sure is there’s a New York apple for every palate,” said Haskins. With growing regions across the state, it’s likely you can find bloom scenery in your area. Visit the NYAA website at nyapplecountry.com and use the locator map on the home page to enter your zip code and preferred travel radius to find an orchard near you. In the fall, this locator map is also a great resource for finding cideries, farm markets and you-pick orchards. Enjoy the bloom season this Mother’s Day with a drive through New York Apple Country - and watch for local apple blossom festivals along the way!
