Come to the Event held to beneft the CNYSPCA W hat’s one of the best things about summer? Clambakes, of course! And when you pair an awesome clambake with a great cause, you get the 2017 Clam Jam to benefit the CNYSPCA! The 2017 Clam Jam takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at the Spinning Wheel, 7384 Thompson Road, North Syracuse. The Clam Jam is $45 for adults for advance tickets and $50 at the door. Kids ages 5-9 are $23 each, and children under four are free. Along with a clambake with dozens of sides, free draft beer, soda, live music, a photo booth, horseshoes, raffles, adoptable dogs there will also be (weather permitting) helicopter rides at a cost of $25 each. Event founder and organizer, Krista Galster, started the Clam Jam three years ago as a way to share her love of animals and give back to the community. In the first year of Clam Jam, 330 people attended. Last year, 550 people participated and this year Galster hopes to surpass that number. To date, the event has raised more than $13,000 for the CNYSPCA. The shelter receives a portion of each ticket sold as well as the proceeds from the raffles. Buy tickets at the CNYSPCA, at the Spinning Wheel and online at Eventbrite.com. For more information, call Galster at 315-460-0429 or email her at kgalster3021@ gmail.com.

Meet the new CNYSPCA director

Take a shelter tour seeing the completion of phase 1 renovations and learn about their plans for phase 2 and 3. Meet someone from our cruelty team, dog control and education departments. Pole Position Raceway to host weekly summer racing camps All-day youth and junior camps emphasize safety, skill and speed

P

ole Position Raceway has opened registration for its weekly junior and youth summer racing camps at its Syracuse location at Destiny USA. Offering an authentic, exhilarating and safe driving experience on one quarter-mile race track, the summer racing camps at Pole Position Raceway are filled with non-stop action and fun. Campers of all skill levels can experience real head-to-head racing in Pole Position Raceway’s high-performance, allelectric and emission-free indoor karts.

The five-day camps are led by a Pole Position Raceway instructor and are designed to develop racing skills. Sessions focus on racing history and strategy including safe driving techniques, track awareness, brake and throttle points, acceleration, passing and more. The final day tests each campers’ knowledge as they compete in a Championship Race Event followed by an awards ceremony. No prior karting experience is necessary. “We are excited to open registration for our 2017 youth summer racing camp, said Karen Davis Farage, president and co-owner of the Pole Position Raceway venues in the east. “Each year we are overwhelmed with the excitement our campers have to get behind the wheel and build their racing skills in our fun and

supportive environment. Regardless of weather, campers will race multiple times in our clean and green indoor climate controlled facility each day to enjoy guaranteed racing action. We look forward to another great year. The camp is open to Juniors, ages 8-12 and Youth, ages 13-17 during the following sessions: Junior Summer Racing Camp (Must be 48 to 58 inches tall) - July 10 – 14 and July 24 – 28. Youth Summer Racing Camp (Must be 58 inches and over) - July 17 – 21 and July 31 – Aug. 4. The full week registration fee is $375 and includes lunch in a party space, beverage and game tokens to use at its arcade each day. All participants receive a Pole

Position Raceway prize pack, an “action photograph and a certificate of completion. Graduated Campers also become honorary members with significant benefits and cost savings for the year. Sessions are held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parents interested in registering more than one child can receive a 10 percent discount for each sibling using the special discount code SIBLINGS10. Adults can get in on the racing action too. Members will receive one free adult race after registering their child and those who refer a new camper will receive one free adult race. Space in each age group is limited. To register or for more information visit polepositionraceway.com or call 315-423RACE (7223).

Stay safe this spring with these wet weather driving tips

Driving in the rain can be more hazardous than driving in the snow, particularly because drivers fail to realize the dangers wet roads can impose. After averaging 10 years of statistics, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 46 percent of weather-related crashes happened during rainfall, but just 17 percent occurred while it was snowing

or sleeting. Drivers often think rain is no big deal, but while itĂ•s not necessary to avoid driving when the raindrops begin to fall, exercising caution when the roads are wet can decrease the risk of being in an auto accident. ✓ Slow down. Wet roadways cause tires to lose traction, as friction is reduced between the rubber and the asphalt. ItĂ•s possible to lose up to

one-third of traction in the rain. To compensate, slow down to reduce sliding and stopping distances. ✓ Improve visibility. Turn on windshield wipers and lights when it is raining. This makes it easier to see the road and makes your vehicle more visible to other motorists. ✓ Leave more distance between cars. In addition to improving your reaction time, giving others more space

can improve visibility by reducing the amount of mist or splashing caused by other vehicles. ✓ Stick to daytime driving. If possible, when it is raining, drive only during the day. Glare from wet roadways and headlights at night can further compromise poor visibility. ✓ Watch for wind gusts. Anticipate gusts when traveling through windy road corridors or over bridges.

TACNY program to discuss evolution of ophthalmic surgery

Cnyspca pet of the week

Meet Mya

Robert W Weisenthal MD, clinical professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Upstate Medical University will present “The Eyes Have It! The Incredible Evolution in Ophthalmic Surgery” from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) in Syracuse’s Armory Square. The event is part of the TACNY Junior Cafe Scientifique, a program for middle-school students. Middle-school students and others interested in learning about ophthalmic surgery are invited to attend the free presentation Walk-ins are welcome, but those interested are asked to RSVP by emailing jrcafe@tacny.org. Students must be accompanied by an adult and may explore the MOST at no cost after the event. He is the founder of Laserview of CNY, the area’s first center for LASIK in 1995, and the area’s first ambulatory surgery center, the Specialty Surgery Center in 2000. He has been named a best doctor every year since 2005 and has been awarded the prestigious Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his work in teaching and writing. Most important he is the father of three boys whom he has been watching closely since they were born. TACNY Junior Cafe Scientifique, founded in 2005, features discussions between scientists and students about topics in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an informal atmosphere and seeks to encourage students to consider careers in these areas.

M

ya is a lover! She loves her walks, loves treats, loves toys, and loves to play. But more than anything, Mya loves people! This beauty came to the shelter when her family moved and didn’t take her along. At forty-four pounds, she’s something of a chunkymonkey. She’s sweet, affectionate, and very loving. She can be energetic and playful, and then she’s content to relax and just be with you. She’s very smart and already knows some commands. Mya would do great in a home with kids five and older. Come meet sweet Mya for yourself and give her the loving home she deserves! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479 ext.0.

CNY Jazz to present The Joe Magnarelli/Akiko Tsuruga Quartet Starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, Joe Magnarelli, Syracuse’s esteemed jazz trumpet expatriate, will make a rare CNY appearance at CNY Jazz Central with Akiko Tsuruga, international jazz organ sensation and protegee of the legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith. They will play two sets of high-energy, winner-take-all jazz, along with Maynard Ferguson alumnus Mike Dubaniewicz on tenor sax and Mike Melito on drums. “Joe is undoubtedly the most successful Syracusan out there making huge waves on the international jazz scene,” said CNY Jazz Executive Director Larry Luttinger. “He’ll be bringing his new bride Akiko, another international sensation, to Syracuse for the first time. Let’s all turn out to welcome them both back after a long hiatus.” Magnarelli is no stranger to Central New York audiences, having performed at multiple summer festivals including the Northeast Jazz & Wine festival with the Syracuse Symphony in 2009. He has nine records out as leader, and leads a busy life collaborating with countless other jazz-men and -women. He is also an adjunct professor of music at the Julliard School and Rutgers University. Akiko Tsuruga hails from Osaka, Japan, and has been a mainstay on the New York jazz scene since 2001. She currently splits her time between her own projects, dual-leader dates with husband Joe, and touring with the legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson. The event will be held at downtown Syracuse’s Jazz Central Theater. Tickets are $15 Door, $5 Students with ID; presale tickets available by calling 315-479-JAZZ (5299.) Eight CNY nonprofits receive Community Health Awards Eight nonprofit Central New York organizations have been chosen from among 200 applications to receive Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Community Health Awards. Each award recipient today received up to $4,000 of the $110,500 allocated by the company to help fund health and wellness programs in its 31-county upstate New York region. Through a competitive application process, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Community Health Awards support programs that have clear goals to improve the health or health care of a specific population. Awards focus on improving the health status of the community, reducing the incidence of specific diseases, promoting health education and enhancing overall wellness. Winning organizations are selected based on the proposed program’s scope of need, goals and the number of people expected to benefit from it. The eight nonprofit organizations in the Central New York region selected are: ✓ Brady Faith Center, Syracuse, to establish a pilot community-supported agriculture program for low-income families. The program will subsidize half the cost of a community-supported agriculture share for 16 weeks to provide healthy, locally grown and readily available produce and also offer cooking classes and recipe cards for participants and market stand customers. ✓ Calvary Food Pantry, Auburn, to increase the amount of fresh produce (purchased from local farmers and farmers

markets) offered to clients of the food pantry by approximately 1.4 pounds per person, per week, from June to November (the months when local fruits and vegetables are available). ✓ Catholic Charities of Onondaga County, Syracuse, for the organization’s Refugee Health Services program. Singin’ and stompin’

Diana Leigh & Her Savoy Stompers swing May 21 at Uriah’s in Liverpool By Russ Tarby When Ithaca singer Diana Leigh exclaims “Swing is King,” she’s not just whistlin’ Dixie. Not only is the lady one of the best jazz singers in Upstate New York, she’s also an accomplished jitterbugger, an established swing-dance coordinator and an experienced bigband vocalist. She’ll demonstrate her purity of tone, swinging sense of phrasing and sparkling stage presence from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 21, when Diana Leigh & her Savoy Stompers make their JASS debut at Uriah’s restaurant, 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57) in Liverpool. Admission costs $12 for JASS members, $15 for others; jasscny.org/. To contact Uriah’s, call 622-2250, or visit uriahsplace.com.

The Savoy Stompers feature alto saxophonist Jesse Collins, guitarist Joe Ferlo, bassist Sean Peters and drummer Chris Jones. Although the band is based in Ithaca, saxophonist Jesse Collins hails from Syracuse where his quartet won a Syracuse Area Music Award for Best Jazz Recording in 2014. He worked for several years in Manhattan where he performed with prominent jazzmen such as Jimmy Cobb, Roy Hargove and Sam Rivers. “Jesse wrote the arrangements for many of the tunes we’ll be performing,” Diana said. “He wrote them specifically for me, for this group. In fact, he’s the one who conceived of the Stompers and came up with the name, and then together we developed the band.” Drummer Chris Jones, the son of legendary drum-

Kids love movies, especially musicals. MasterWorks Chorale’s interactive concert, “Oscar Kids,” lets children of all ages be part of the show! The 50-voice choir, directed by Kip Coerper, presents a free family-friendly concert at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles. Sing-along songs from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Monsters Inc.” and other Oscar-winning favorite flicks will be featured in this informal 30-minute concert, held in the church’s Dobson Hall. Kids will be invited to join in the fun with colorful props and kid-sized play instruments, and costumes are welcome – dust off those Halloween costumes and let the kids come dressed as their favorite movie characters. plays with Syracuse’s Mario DeSantis Orchestra. Sean Peters also resides in Utica where he has long been active on the local blues scene accompanying artists such as Big Tom Townsley and Morris Tarbell. Whether breathing a ballad or belting a blues, Diana Leigh charmingly commands audience attention. “Diana Leigh is an impressive singer,” said Ithaca vocal coach Marty Heresniak. “As an audience member, I am taken by the way she can involve everyone in her performance and keep a dance floor hopping. As a musician, I admire her phrasing and the way she leads a band to give the best they have. As a lifelong singing teacher, I’m always pleased by her healthy, free and spontaneous vocalism. Diana rocks. And swings.” Among the numbers likely to be heard at Uriah’s are “Undecided,” “Let’s Fall in Love” and of course, “Stompin’ at the Savoy.” Diana Leigh will sing just for YOU: “The Very Thought of You,” “It Could Happen to You,” “I Remember You” and “I’ll String Along with

You.” Just for fun, she’ll stir up a little “Nyquill Blues.” Diana’s father, the late Manhattan trumpeter John Glasel, was one of her earliest influences. In the 1950s and 60s, Glasel was one of the original members of the New York Brass Quintet and he played thousands of club dates and recording sessions with influential jazzmen such as clarinetist Bob Wilber, arranger Gil Evans and drummer Ray McKinley. “He was a real jazzer and loved bebop,” Diana said. In addition to being an indemand sideman, he led his own groups, recording several albums of his own. “He was an inventive composer and arranger and a great player” He capped off his career by becoming president of AFM Local 802, the musician’s union in New York City. Diana grew up in the creative hotbed of Woodstock, N.Y., where music and theater were a way of life. Moving to Ithaca in the late 1980s, the striking redhead with the golden voice fronted several groups including Crazy Rhythm, The

Blue Blazers, Sugar Moon, The Riveters and The UnderTones. Nowadays, when she’s not singing with the Stompers, Diana occasionally fronts The Ageless Jazz Band, an Ithaca-based big band. A veteran swing dancer, Diana has been cutting the rug for more than two decades. For six years she was a member of The ExtravaDancers, a semi-professional swing-dance performance troupe. She taught jitterbug for a few years and has long been active in the Ithaca Swing Dance network, helping to bring dance events alive across the region. Sure, it’s fun to watch Diana dance, but it’s fantastic to hear her sing. Overall, Leigh’s reach never exceeds her grasp as her often brilliant intonation and sometimes playful phrasing satisfies the demands of each song. Occasionally, she’ll take it a step further, allowing her soaring soprano to devolve into a suggestive growl, but otherwise she plays it straight. Straight to the moon!
