Campana, den Dekker return The first-place Syracuse Chiefs get stronger day-by-day By Russ Tarby

M

ay’s a merry month for the Syracuse Chiefs. Our International League baseball club has won seven of ten games played since April 30 after they finished that month with three straight victories against the Pawtucket Red Sox. In other words, The Syracuse Chiefs are on a roll! As of May 11, the Chiefs stood alone in first place in the IL’s North Division with a record of 19-12, three games ahead of second-placers Rochester Red Wings and The ScrantonWilkes-Barre RailRiders. And manager Billy Gardner Jr.’s lineup got a boost on May 8 when hardhitting outfielder Matt den Dekker was sent down to Triple-A by the parent Washington Nationals.

Den Dekker, 28, played for the New York Mets in 2013 and ’14, but he had his best major-league season last year when he played 55 games for the Nationals, batting a respectable .253 with five home runs. Over his seven-year minor-league career, however, den Dekker recorded a significantly higher .283 batting average while smacking more than 10 homers each season. Last season, Matt became the first Chiefs’ hitter to lift a home run onto the new right-field deck which inspired G.M. Jason Smorol to unofficially baptize the patio “The den Dekker Deck.” In his first three games for the Chiefs, the lefthanded hitter from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. had yet to hit a homer, but he has stolen two bases. The day den Dekker arrived here, infielder Jose

Lozada was placed in the disabled list. On May 10, 34-year-old infielder Brendan Ryan was traded to the Los Angeles Angels and outfielder Tony Campana was activated from the disabled list after 21 days. Campana, a 29-yearold veteran of four majorleague seasons, was hitting .296 for the Chiefs and laid down five successful bunts to lead the team in sacrifices. In his four seasons in the National league – two with the Chicago Cubs and two with the Arizona Diamondbacks – Campana stole 66 bases while getting caught just eight times. The speedy Campana will help Syracuse hold onto the best stolen-base percentage (96.4 percent) in professional baseball. So far this season the Chiefs have swiped 27 in 28 attempts. Tides roll in After road games in

Chiefs games on cable TV Time Warner Cable SportsChannel is scheduled to televise 24 Chiefs games during the 2016 season – 10 home games and 14 away games at Buffalo, Rochester and Durham. The telecasts began May 6 from Buffalo, and the first televised home game of the season will be at 6:30 p.m. May 20 when Syracuse hosts the Norfolk Tides. For the second consecutive year, play-by-play duties will be handled by Kevin Brown, while Chiefs Wall of Famer Steve Grilli returns as analyst. The complete broadcast schedule is as follows, with home dates in bold: 5/20 vs. Norfolk, 6:35 p.m. 6/2 @ Buffalo, 7:05 p.m. 6/3 @ Buffalo, 7:05 p.m. 6/5 vs. Buffalo, 1:05 p.m. 6/17 vs. Columbus, 7:05 p.m. 7/2 vs. Rochester, 7:05 p.m. 7/3 vs. Rochester, 7:05 p.m. 7/4 @ Durham, 7:05 p.m. 7/5 @ Durham, 7:05 p.m. 7/6 @ Durham, 7:05 p.m. 7/15 vs. Durham, 7:05 p.m. Rochester and Allentown, Pa., the Chiefs return home at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday,

ple-A farmhands of the Baltimore Orioles and the Chiefs is the top affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The four-game homestand continues at 6:35 p.m. Friday, May 20, and at 1:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22. The Chiefs enjoy a rare off day on Monday, before welcoming the Charlotte Knights to NBT Bank Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, May 24-26. Ticket prices at NBT Bank Stadium range from $6 to $12, and parking costs $5; syracusechiefs. com; 474-7833. All Chiefs games can be heard live over WSKO, The Score 1260, on the AM radio dial and online at thescore1260.com, with play-by-play announcers Kevin Brown and Eric Gallanty. Field of Dreams to hold grand opening Saturday The Grand Opening Ceremony of the new “Carrier Park Field of Dreams – Home of Syracuse Challenger Baseball” will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. The ceremony will include: 1. A procession of the State Flags in which players from our respective Little Leagues (dressed in their team uniforms) will carry the flags in to start the ceremony. 2. New York State Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul will be throwing out the 1st pitch!

3. Food, FUN and live games featuring Challenger and Little League players. 4. Cool stuff after the ceremony for everyone to enjoy. With Phase 1 complete, Carrier Park is well on it’s way to becoming the leading, all-inclusive outdoor multi-sports and wellness complex designed for the use and enjoyment of both local residents and visitors to Central New York. The town of DeWitt, in conjunction with the members of the Carrier Park Project recognized the need for an outdoor multi-sports facility within the Central New York community.

Given the local community’s passion for all sports, Carrier Park will offer an opportunity for amateur and junior level tournament play. The goals of the park include providing: • Fully accessible fields that will enable the Syracuse Challenger league to have a permanent location for our children with special needs to play baseball. • A centrally located park for Central New York Families to enjoy walking, picnicking and handicap accessible playgrounds.

• Advanced level athletic fields that will allow for tournament level competitions in little league baseball, soccer and lacrosse. Carrier Park is located at 600 Roby Ave., East Syracuse, just off Carrier Circle. The entrance to the park is at the light on Thompson Road at the Dunkin Donuts/Jreck Subs plaza. Look for the green Town of Dewitt Willis Carrier Recreation Center sign. You can also enter from Kinne Street, we will have signage up at both locations letting you know where to go.

is it Trade-In Time? By Tresa Erickson

W

hen it comes time to buy a new car, some people sell their old one while others use it for a tradein. While selling usually brings the best price, trading in a vehicle is a lot less hassle. The dealership usually handles all of the paperwork for the tradein, and all you have to do is sign on the dotted line. Dealerships won’t pay as much for trade-ins due to the costs incurred in selling them, but you can get a fair price by prepping your car for the trade beforehand. Clean sells, so clean your car, inside and out. Wash and wax the exterior. Vacuum and dust the interior. Clean the engine and top off the fluids. Car still not up to your standards? Have it detailed. While it will cost you, a good detail job can get you hundreds more in trade-in value. Condition sells, so make sure file photo your car is in good condition.

AUTO CONNECTION

Have your vehicle inspected by a quality mechanic and make any necessary minor repairs. Have the oil changed and the tires rotated. Gather your maintenance records, along with a vehicle history report and an inspection report, to prove that you have indeed taken care of your car. Do your homework and research the trade-in value of your car. There are several websites to assist you with this endeavor and you will probably uncover a low, average and high retail value. Don’t overestimate the tradein value of your car. Chances are the dealership will give you the average trade-in value, unless it has a lot of wear and tear. In that case, you might receive a low trade-in value. Once you know the trade-in value, you can determine where the best deals are and negotiate a good deal. If the price offered for your trade-in seems too low, you can use the knowledge and documentation you have gathered to get a better deal.

Auto Connection

Road Trippin’ By Tresa Erickson Yahoo! You’re finally getting away for the weekend. You’ve got your bags packed, you’ve taken the pets to the kennel and you’ve gassed up the car. You’re all set for the weekend, or are you? Have you checked the condition of your car? Are you sure it’s ready to take a road trip? According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, maintenance neglect results in more than 2,500 deaths each year and 100,000 injuries. That’s over $2 billion in lost wages, medical expenses and property damage. To avoid becoming a statistic, have your vehicle routinely serviced and take a few minutes to check the following before going on a trip:

Belts and hoses.

Inspect the belts and hoses and replace any that are worn or loose.

Fluids.

Check the fluid levels, including the anti-freeze/coolant, engine oil, power steering fluid, brake and transmission fluids, and windshield washer solvent. Refill or replace any that needs it.

Lighting.

Test the lighting on the interior and exterior. Make certain the headlights and taillights function properly.

Tires.

Check the tires and make sure they are in good condition and properly inflated. Replace any with bulges or bald spots and air up those that need it.

Windshield wipers.

Inspect the windshield wipers. Generally you should replace them every six months, but if yours smear, streak or clatter, you may have to replace them sooner. These are just some of the more common areas drivers fail to maintain, leading to troubles on the road. If you have the time, you may want to have your mechanic do a complete inspection of your vehicle before your trip. That way, any necessary repairs can be made before you take off and you can be secure in the knowledge that a person familiar with your vehicle has checked it out. Put your mind at ease. Inspect your vehicle before hitting the road and reduce your chances of having troubles later.

Musician to perform on historic pipe organ

Empire State Theatre and Musical Instrument Museum to host internationally-renowned David Gray

W

hat is the best kept secret in Syracuse ? Many would say the Empire State Theatre and Musical Instrument Museum at the New York State Fairgrounds. Celebrating its 50th year at the Art and Home Center, the museum was founded to preserve and display items from the “Golden Age” of theaters in Syracuse. As part of its continuing commitment to present public programs, ESTMIM will bring David Gray, from Glasgow, Scotland, to perform on the 1925 WurliTzer theater pipe organ originally installed in RKO Keith’s theater in Syracuse. This special presentation will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, and is open to the public. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students and children 5 and under are free. Free parking; enter at Gate 2. Gray, a classically trained pianist, has adopted the theatre organ and has been internationally recognized for his remarkable talent. Named the Young American Theatre Organist of the year at the age of 15, Gray has gone on to play many of the most well known theater instruments in the world including Australia, Holland, Italy, New Zealand, England and extensively in the United States. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2015, Gray was awarded a Master of Arts degree in piano. The 1925 WurliTzer organ Gray will be playing was saved from destruction by the founding members of the Empire Theatre and Musical Instrument Museum in 1966 just before Keith’s theatre was demolished to build the “Sibley” submitted photo parking garage on Salina Street. Sacred Sites Open House Weekend set for May 21-22

Central New York congregations will open their doors to the Community During New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, with sites in Syracuse, Binghamton, Johnson City, Elmira, Endwell, Syracuse, Rome, Owasco, Chittenango, Owego and Lyons Falls among the participants. More than 120 sites statewide will participate in the weekend. Congregations will also showcase the cultural and social service programs they provide the wider community with special tours, concerts, food fairs and other events. “Many of New York’s magnificent houses of worship have served generations and continue to anchor communities and all too often, they are seen only by their members,” said Peg Breen, president of The New York Landmarks Conservancy. “The Sacred Sites Open House Weekend allows everyone to enjoy the architecture, art, and history of these remarkable structures.” This year’s Open House weekend celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites program, the only statewide program in the country providing financial and technical assistance for the restoration of culturally significant religious properties. Since 1986, the program has awarded 1,350 grants totaling over $9.3 million to more than 750 congregations regardless of denomination throughout New York state. Syracuse congregations participating in the Open House Weekend to date include:

AME Zion Church (former People’s AME Zion): 711 E Fayette St., 2-4 p.m. on May 22.

Peoples A.M.E. Zion is the oldest AfricanAmerican congregation in Syracuse and the central New York region. Established in 1841, the congregation purchased their first church building on South Crouse Street in 1848. In 1863 they replaced this church with a new, larger building, but by 1910 they had outgrown their facility once again, and planned a move to a new facility at 711 East Fayette Street, the site of this May’s groundbreaking and commemoration. By 1975, the congregation moved again, to its fourth and present location on South Salina Street. The 1910 church eventually fell into disrepair. Designed by prominent Syracuse architect Charles Colton, the 1910 design and construction of the former People’s AME Zion church building at 711 East Fayette melds traditional late nineteenth century Romanesque and Gothic revival styles with exposed turn of the century structural components. The squat building with corner tower was a popular church design of the period. The design also employed contemporary features such as white Litholite (an artificial cast stone product) instead of natural stone, sand lime brick instead of hard fired brick, open structural steel trusses instead of traditional wooden sanctuary roof construction, and twentieth century leaded glass windows. Windows in the church are leaded colored art glass panels representative of early twentieth century mass-produced catalog design motifs.

Park Central Presbyterian Church: 504 E Fayette St., 1:00-3:00pm on May 22.

Park Church was established in 1846. Their first services were held at Market Hall, a building that stood on the site of the present City Hall. A new, Greek Revival church was built at the west end of Fayette Park (now “Fayette Firefighters’ Memorial Park”) in 1847. It was replaced by the present, Gothic Revival church, of red brick with sandstone trim, located at the opposite end of the park, designed by prolific Syracuse architect Archimedes Russell in 1872 and completed by 1875. Mr. Russell was the founder of the architectural school at Syracuse University. The church features two towers of uneven height flanking a central gable with a rose window. The parish house wing was added in 1926. A west porch was added and the interior was given a makeover and extended balcony in 1967.

St. Paul’s Church: 310 Montgomery St., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on May 21 and noon-4 p.m. on May 22.

Located in the heart of Syracuse’s downtown, St. Paul’s Church was designed by British born, Brooklyn-based architect Henry Dudley, a prominent Ecclesiologist, and is the parish’s third church. The Late Gothic Revival style building was constructed between 1885 and 1907 of Onondaga limestone. Its most remarkable feature is its spire which soars more than 200 feet and is surmounted by a seven foot cross. Founded in 1826, St. Paul’s is the oldest Episcopal parish in the city

of Syracuse and has served twice as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Central New York; in 2015, it was re-designated St. Paul’s Syracuse, The Downtown Episcopal Church.

Church of the Saviour: 437 James St., 10 a.m.-3p.m. May 21 and 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m. May 22.

Church of the Saviour was founded in 1848 as the first freely seated church in the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and only the second in New York state. In the 1880s the second pastor of the church was publicly criticized in the press for marrying “Negros,” Jews and Native Americans. The present, rusticated brownstone Gothic Revival church was constructed in 1891 to the designs of local architect Asa Merrick. The church was almost destroyed by a fire in 1912 that started in a nearby carriage house. The parish engaged the Boston architect Ralph Adams Cram, who was a friend of the church’s then rector, to rebuild the church. Cram was one of the most noted early twentieth century proponents of the Gothic-Revival style and its use in ecclesiastical buildings. The present interior, with its brick trimmed round arches, stained-glass windows by the Lamb Studios, and heavy exposed trusses and beams, reflects Cram’s philosophy about the use of Gothic vocabulary in ecclesiastic architecture. Crouse Hospital earns recognition as a Blue Distinction Center+

Designation awarded for maternity care, knee and hip replacement

In an effort to help prospective parents find hospitals that deliver quality, affordable maternity care, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has announced that Crouse Hospital has been designated as one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to receive its Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation, a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. In addition, Crouse Hospital has earned designation as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement from Blue Cross Blue Shield. The national Blue Distinction Center program helps patients identify hospitals that have demonstrated a commitment to providing high-quality care and better outcomes for specialized care. Blue Distinction Centers+ also have met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. The goal of the Blue Distinction program is to identify medical facilities that deliver better overall quality and medical outcomes for a specific area of specialty care, helping patients and doctors to make more informed hospital choices. BCBS collaborates with leading physicians and medical organizations to determine the selection criteria for all Blue Distinction programs.

Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement

According to Crouse Hospital’s Chief of Orthopedics Tim Izant, MD, this designation reflects the high level of expertise required for an outstanding orthopedic program, plus the hospital’s ability to provide ser-

vices cost-effectively. “Our surgeons and clinical staff collaborate continuously to provide high-quality, patient-focused care,” said Izant. “Not only do we offer a wide range of orthopedic procedures, but we’re also privileged to have some of the region’s most qualified and experienced surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, technologists and physical rehabilitation therapists, all of whom collaborate on achieving excellent care coordination and patient outcomes.” Izant notes that the hospital’s designation as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement is an honor that is well earned. “Research shows that patients who get specialty treatment at Blue Distinction Centers have shown better results, including fewer medical complications, fewer readmissions and better patient outcomes,” he said. “Crouse’s ‘plus’ designation also demonstrates that this is achievable while meeting strict cost-of-care criteria.” Crouse Hospital’s joint replacement outcomes exceed national averages, with patients going home after 2.75 days, compared to the national average of 3.34 days. The program offers full and partial knee replacement; traditional and direct anterior surgical approaches; computer-assisted knee replacement and robotically assisted techniques; shoulder replacement; orthopedic spine surgery; trauma-related orthopedic surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Crouse also offers “Hip Today, Home Tomorrow,” an innovative program developed by Izant that provides an alternative STONELEIGH toSTONELEIGH traditional inpatient joint replacement surgery, withAPARTMENTS just one overnight stay that includes the APARTMENTS entire spectrum of surgical, nursing, physical therapy 1 Bedroom Senior care. 1 Bedroom Senior and outpatient rehabilitation Citizens (age Citizens (age 62 62 or or older) a permanent older) or or a permanent mobility impairment mobility impairment where receive where youyou receive a Social Security a Social Security disability. disability.

Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care

Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization. This new Blue Distinction Centers+ for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. “As the region’s premier provider of maternity care, Crouse is proud to be designated as one of the first hospitals in the nation to receive Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation” said Chief Medical Officer Seth Kronenberg, MD. “We thank our entire Kienzle Family Maternity Center team for this special recognition. We’re proud of the highly trained, experienced clinical staff and physicians who care for our mothers and their newborns – nearly 4,000 last year alone.” Compared with babies born 39 weeks or later, early term infants face higher risks of infant death and respiratory ailments such as respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and respiratory failure, among other conditions. These babies also have a higher rate of admission to neonatal intensive care units, such as the Baker Regional NICU at Crouse that serves the sickest and tiniest patients from a 14-county region. In addition, hospitals that receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation agreed to meet requirements that align with principles that support evidencebased practices of care, as well as having initiated programs to promote successful breastfeeding, as put forth by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) through its “Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care.” The program also evaluates hospitals on overall patient satisfaction, including a willingness to recommend the hospital to others.

o you like great barbecue? Would you like to meet professional barbecue teams? Would you consider eating BBQ to help homeless veterans? Or would you like to compete in a grilling contest? If so, then don’t miss the Second Annual Salt City BBQ Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, in Clinton Square, Downtown Syracuse. Local barbecue and food businesses that are participating in this fundraiser include Dinosaur BBQ, Galloway’s BBQ, Limp Lizard, Gwen’s, Smokin’ Pete’s and more. There will be BBQ, brews and Ashley Lynn wine slushies. The proceeds from this event go to Phoenix Philosophies Inc., a Central New York charity that buys and rehabs houses to give homeless veterans and people leaving homeless shelters a decent, permanent place to live and possibly own. Visit phoenixphilosophies.org. May 21 is Armed Forces Day and there will be military service providers for veterans who need assistance including Soldier On, Easter Seals, Notes to Fallen Vets, a military medical bus from Ft. Drum, Phoenix Philosophies Inc., the VA, Pointman Ministries and Clear Path for Veterans. The festival starts off with the Syracuse City School Junior ROTC presenting colors and Michelle Dudley singing the “Star Spangled Banner.” Then, you can listen to music and eat great barbcue while you stroll around to meet and speak to teams competing in the Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned Salt City BBQ Festival Championship. We have at least 33 national and international BBQ teams competing toward the Jack Daniels National BBQ Championship as well as the Empire BBQ Championship. The teams will be cooking pork butts to donate to feed homeless people. Kansas City BBQ Society has a 250K Meals Mission that the Salt City BBQ Festival is assisting to reach this goal of feeding 250K homeless people. We will also have a non-perishable food drive with collection bins throughout Clinton Square.
