he New York State Chinese Lantern Festival will be held May 25 through July 1 at the New York State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse. Visitors will stroll along a path surrounded by all-new lighted lantern sculptures – dazzling works of art that light up the night – and enjoy live performances, food and drink as well as watch artisans perfecting their crafts available for purchase. This year’s event will have and indoor and outdoor com-
ponent. It will be held in the International Building and the State Park at the Fair. “This is a feast of lights and color at a time when the weather in Upstate New York begins to change,� said Annette Peters, vice president of marketing, Advance Media New York. “It’s a perfect addition to the cultural fabric of our community,� she said. The Lantern Festival will be open every day but Mondays and includes two 30minute entertainment shows focusing on Chinese culture, featuring Chinese dancers,
acrobats, face changers and musicians.  Some traditional Chinese performances include: jar balancing, kicking bowls on a rolling board, face-changing, martial arts, and diabolo. The sculptural components will be created on-site

by more than 20 artists from China. Welded metal frames covered in fabric will emerge as flowers, peacocks, cranes, butterflies, archways. The sculptures are LED-lit- fromwithin lanterns. “Visitors will explore both the ancient culture of China
while learning about the Chinese traditions of today by taking a walking interactive tour of breathtaking displays,� organizers said. Hours: Tuesdays – Thursdays 6 to 10 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays 6 – 11 p.m.; Sundays 6 – 10 p.m. Closed Mondays. Live performances are 7 pm & 8:30pm (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and 7pm & 8:30pm & 9:30pm (Fridays & Saturdays) inside the International Building. Admission prices: Adults $15.50 online, $16 at the gate; senior citizens $14 online, $14.50 at the gate; Children 5-16 $12.50 online, $13 af the gate; children under 5 years old get in free. On Saturday, select restaurants and food vendors will offer two samples for $1 to those with a special wristband, available at The Summit Federal Credit Union tent for a minimum donation of $5. All wristband proceeds go directly to the charities. Admission is free.

OCC men’s lacrosse wins 11th national championship The Onondaga Community College men’s lacrosse team won its 11th National Championship, defeating Nassau Community College 11-9 on Chuck Wilbur Field at Lazer Stadium. The victory capped an undefeated campaign and extended the Lazers two-season winning streak to 30 games. Sophomore Austin Staats was named the tournament’s Best Offensive Player. Staats scored three goals in the championship game as did sophomore Russ Oakes. Freshman Jerry Staats was named the tournament’s Best Defensive Player. Hot dog contest qualifier visits Syracuse June 2 Local champs win a trip to finals in Coney Island
Nathan’s Famous will host the New York qualifier for the annual Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 2. The event, presented in partnership with Tops Friendly Markets, will take place at The Taste of Syracuse Festival in Syracuse. The top male and female finishers in the event will qualify for a seat at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, on July 4, 2018, where they will face reigning champions Joey Chestnut Janice Carroll

Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, Nevada, will defend her title as female champion, having consumed 41 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes in
2017, a new personal best. According to legend, the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest has occurred each July 4 in Coney Island since 1916, the year Nathan Handwerker opened the beloved restaurant. MLE, the governing body of all stomachcentric sports, sanctions the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog-Eating Circuit and ensures the contests are judged professionally and that safety standards are in place at each event.
