Y
ou can kick out the jams every Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Funk ‘N Waffles, in downtown Syracuse, at 313 S. Clinton St., on the outskirts of Armory Square. Every Sunday – including this Sunday, May 28 – trombonist Melissa Gardiner leads the house band at a weekly jazz and gospel jam session there. It’s open to all musicians and students, and growing audiences have been enjoying the swingin’ Sunday sounds. The house rhythm section var-
ies but has often included Will Gorman or Dan Pugh on keys, Sean Peters or Matt Vacanti on bass, Jeff Martin on guitar and Josh Dekaney or Keenan LeBlanc on drums. At the initial session last year, Jason Gardiner played a blues on valve trombone, backed by the
house ban before Shakera Kyle rose from the audience to sing “Just the Two of Us,” with flutist Lana Stafford adding fills. Then the band swung into “On Green Dolphin Street.” At a recent session, the musicians opened with an appropriate theme song, Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” with Gardiner
Pictured clockwise from above are singer Shakera Kyle, trombonist/leader Melissa Gardiner, bassist Matt Vacanti, keyboardist Will Gorman, drummer Josh Dekaney, valve trombonist Jason Gardiner, flutist Lana Stafford and guitarist Jeff Martin.

in Central New York. She teaches at Syracuse and Cornell universities and leads several jazz combos including Second Line Syracuse, an eight-piece brass band which won the 2017 Syracuse Area Music Award for Best Jazz Recording for its self-titled CD. Melissa’s community commitment knows no bounds. In February, she debuted the new Unity Street Band – an open, multi-level community band that plays for good causes. She works tirelessly to reconnect jazz music to the community and create an environment of mentorship in which students and professionals can make music together. And, of course, she hosts the weekly youth-oriented jam session every Sunday afternoon at Funk ‘N Waffles. Admission is free; 474-1060; melissamaymusic.com.

The quartet followed with Herbie Hancock’s “Butterfly,” and guitarist Jeff Martin took over, picking out a boppish “Cherokee.” Over the past few years Melissa Gardiner – a University of Michigan and Juilliard School alumna who has studied with trombonists Steve Turre and Wycliffe Gordon – has emerged as one of the busiest musicians

Record numbers make I Love My Park Day a huge success Thanks to the nearly 8,000 volunteers who pitched in on Saturday, May 6, the sixth annual I Love My Park Day was a huge success. With their help, so much was accomplished.
More than 125 State Parks, Historic Sites and Public Lands Enhanced
Volunteers took part in more than 250 cleanup, improvement, and beautification projects at over 125 state parks, historic sites, and public lands in every corner of the state. For the second year, Parks & Trails New York and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation joined with the Department of Environmental Conservation, the National Park Service, Excelsior
Conservation Corps and the New York Commission on Volunteer and Community Service to organize and promote I Love My Park Day In total,105 state parks and historic sites hosted events all over the state, from the shores of Montauk Point State Park doing beach cleanup to the western part of the state in Niagara Falls State Park, staining the railing to the Cave of the Winds and all the way up towards Canada at Point Au Roche State Park completing park improvements and much more across the state In addition, 16 DEC locations participated this year, with projects varying from raking debris, weeding, tree planting, trail
clean-up, marking trails and invasive species removal, and five national park sites participated this year, including ocean shore cleanup along the Fire Island National Seashore, cleaning 19th century monument markers at Saratoga National Historic Park and cleaning barracks and fort rooms at Fort Stanwix National Monument Members of the Governor’s Excelsior Conservation Corps were deployed to 10 parks across the state, and more than 300 AmeriCorps members volunteered at 46 different state parks, historic sites and public lands.
Headlines tout love for parks
Governor Cuomo’s invitation to all New
Yorkers to volunteer on Saturday put our state parks and public lands, their needs and the strong public support for them in the public’s eye. Stories ran in print, online and on the air. Social media was buzzing with posts, tweets and photos from events around the state using #ILoveMyParkDay, #LoveNYParks and #ILMPD
A boost to volunteerism
New and veteran volunteers came out to give back to the outdoor places they use and enjoy all year. Many Friends groups enjoyed the best turnout ever for a volunteer event. A huge youth turnout helped to cement lifelong relationships with the outdoors and ensure the future stewardship of our parks, historic sites and public lands.
Registration still open for youth sportsman, wildlife adventure summer camps There is still time for girls and boys ages 11-15 to register for the Montezuma Audubon Center’s Sportsman Education and Wildlife Adventure Summer Camps. camps will be taught as home study courses to maximize time in the field. Campers will be given the course manual and workbook prior to camp. Fisheries Camp participants will learn safe fishing practices with hands-on and fun experiences while fishing for trout, panfish, salmon, bass and more around the Finger Lakes
Region. Wildlife Adventure Camp participants will explore the Montezuma Wetlands Complex’s habitats and wildlife through hiking, canoeing, navigating and other outdoor activities. Fee for each camp is $150 and camps run each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

May is American Stroke Month
American Heart Association/American Stroke Association invites CNY to join ‘Together to End Stroke’
D
uring American Stroke Month in May, the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association encourages Central New Yorkers to join together to end the country’s fifth leading cause of death – stroke. Despite claiming more than 133,000 lives annually in the United States and 5 percent of lives in CNY, as well as being a leading cause of serious, longterm disability, stroke is largely preventable and treatable. have a stroke have high blood pressure so it’s incredibly important to know your numbers and keep them under control to help prevent a stroke. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. Nearly one in six American adults with high blood pressure don’t know it, according to AHA/ASA. Awareness is also key when it comes to stroke treatment. For many strokes, the right treatment right away can save lives and improve recovery so it’s important to get help immediately. The American Stroke
Association’s “Together to End Stroke” initiative, sponsored nationally by Medtronic, teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people to recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs: F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. A - Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech
slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? T - Time to call 911: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately. For more information about stroke or American Stroke Month activities, follow #StrokeMonth on social media or visit StrokeAssociation.org/strokemonth.

Zoo to hold naming contest for newly-hatched penguin
Submitted photo
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney joined staff at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo to announce that a new Humboldt penguin chick hatched May 5 at the zoo. The new chick weighed 68 grams and is the offspring of Mario and Montaña. The mother, Montaña, hatched here in 2006. Mahoney introduced the chick and announced that there will be a naming contest, with details to be posted on the zoo’s website. “I am so pleased to welcome this new baby to the zoo,” Mahoney said. “We are very proud of our zoo’s success in raising Humboldt penguin chicks. Congratulations to the zoo staff on your great work.” Humboldt penguins are native to the Humboldt Current along the coast of Peru and Chile in South America. Humboldt penguin populations have been severely declining in the wild, with only 10,000 to 12,000 breeding pairs remaining. The zoo is a leader in Humboldt penguin conservation, with a colony of 39 individuals and having hatched 54 chicks since 2006 as part of the Species Survival Plan, a program by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) to save endangered species. “Penguins from our colony travel to other AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to continue populating the species while maintaining genetic diversity,” said zoo Director Ted Fox. “We are excited to continue our wonderful success with Humboldt penguins here, and it’s great to be part of the AZA’s efforts to save penguins worldwide.” The new chick will be cared for by its parents for several weeks before it can go on exhibit at Penguin Coast with the rest of the colony.

Rockin’ the Redhouse comes to the Landmark
Redhouse Arts Center will host the Fifth Annual “Rockin’ the Redhouse” on Friday, June 9, at the Landmark Theatre. Doors at the Landmark will open at 5:30 p.m. and the competition will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Redhouse Arts Center. Rockin’ the Redhouse is a friendly, corporate battle of the bands style event, with each band competing to win the title of champion. The event is not only an opportunity for these corporate bands to perform on the big stage at the Landmark Theater, but a team-building experience for the whole company, since fellow employees and friends have a great time cheering on their bands; a lively and excited crowd is important since audience participation is part of the judging criteria. Each band has 15 minutes of stage time. Last year eight bands entertained over 1,000 audience members and fans raising over $10,000 to support education scholarships. Redhouse is currently seeking new corporate bands to participate in hopes of having 10 bands in total for the 2017 event. There is an entry fee for each band which is donated by the company represented by the band. Last year’s bands included Petty Ca$h (Bank of New York Mellon), Six Pack (Anheuser Busch), Old School (Manlius Pepple Hill), Defense Mechanism (Lockheed Martin), CX Dinosaurs (CXtec), Actuators (Young & Franklin), The Verdict (Bousquet Holstein Law Firm), and The Chillerz (Carrier Corporation). For corporations that don’t have the employee base to put together a band, there are still opportunities to get involved through corporate sponsorships. For more information on the Rockin’ the Redhouse event, to inquire on entering a corporate band or becoming a sponsor, please call the Redhouse Box Office at (315) 362-2785 or email sue@ theredhouse.org.

“It took 150 years to make this movie!” said Fayetteville resident Pat Ennis, who will tell the story behind the making of the Civil War movie “Union Bound” Friday, June 9 in Peterboro. The program begins at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the Smithfield Community Center, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, and opens the 25th Annual Peterboro Civil War Weekend. Ennis will be joined by Michael Davis, the producer who made the movie based on two small Civil War diaries of Ennis’ great-great-grandfather, Joseph Hoover of Herkimer. “Union Bound” relates Hoover’s service in the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry along with other recruits from the Herkimer County NY area. Hoover and friends were captured at the Battle of the Wilderness and spent four month in An-
Odie is a love bug! Nothing bothers this lab mix. Odie is good with kids, but he’d have to be the only pet. He’s patient in the bath, rides great in the car, and can catch popcorn on the fly! He loves people and he loves attention. Odie was the CNYSPCA Canine Ambassador on recent visit to Nate Perry Elementary School. He went into every classroom and everybody loved him. This canine Casanova came to the shelter as a stray back in November. He thinks he’s been here long enough, and he’s hoping to find a loving family of his own soon.
