Run or walk for HOPE Fundraiser helps organization help those who are grieving
A
“It is our hope that this fundraiser will not only raise awareness for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, but will keep Tony’s memory alive in our hearts, as well as in the hearts of the community he loved so dearly.”
By Tami Scott
my Dannible was searching for an anniversary gift to give her mom, Judy, when she first learned of HOPE for Bereaved, a nonprofit organization that provides support, resources and hope for grieving children, adults and families. She was talking to a co-worker who serves on its board when HOPE’s Butterfly Garden and its memorial bricks were mentioned. Dannible’s father, Anthony “Tony” Dannible, had recently died, so Amy thought an engraved brick to honor her dad might be the perfect present. As time passed, Amy became more acquainted with HOPE. She attended various fundraising events, met more people associated with the nonprofit, and eventually arranged for her father’s company, Dannible and McKee, LLP, to become the presenting sponsor of HOPE’s annual 8K Run/3K Walk. “[Our father] was very selfless and very giving,” said Amy, who has two siblings, Christy and Tom. “We’re trying to honor his memory and also make people aware of the resource [available] here.” Had she known of HOPE at the time of her dad’s death, Amy said she would have undoubtedly involved her kids, particularly her 9-year-old son who took his grandfather’s death so hard he was having trouble focusing in school and in daily life. HOPE offers support groups specifically for children, and helps them to understand they are not alone. “What [HOPE] offers to so many people is something that is needed, because you’ve got to talk to somebody,” said Amy, who acknowledged that her mom has not yet been able to bring herself to a meeting. But she encourages anyone who is grieving, including her mom, to take the first step and go. “Everybody involved [at HOPE] has lost someone.

It’s hard because you feel like ‘oh, I don’t want to go in there and talk about anything,’ but, you know what, those same people are going through the same thing … [go] even if you don’t say anything and just listen.” Thanks to HOPE’s help and support, her son, she said, is now in a much better place. “We want to get so many people to know about HOPE that [the run/walk] ends up at Onondaga Lake Park,” she said. “[HOPE] helps everyone.”
When the ‘unthinkable’ happens
In a span of just four months, two people that meant the world to Tracy Derrenbacher had died — her sister and her son. “Tricia’s sudden loss forced me to confront intense grief [that] I had never experienced before,” said Derren-
bacher, of Cicero. “Then, the unthinkable happened and our ‘ideal’ world was suddenly and inexplicably ripped away.” Seventeen-year-old Reed, a dynamic individual and studentathlete at Westhill High School, committed suicide. “His loss has left a gaping hole HOPE

Comeback kids No matter the score, the Chiefs repeatedly bounce back from behind
Revisionist history
Burns erred by placing ‘black cat incident’ in Syracuse By Russ Tarby
RICK nelson
Brian Goodwin, the Syracuse Chiefs 25-year-old lefty-swinging outfielder from North Carolina, hit a game-winning ninth-inning single May 16 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, Pa. After 37 games this season, Goodwin is hitting .308 with three home runs and 19 runs batted in. By Russ Tarby It’s a familiar scenario for the Syracuse Chiefs. The opponent leads the game by several runs as the final innings loom. But the Chiefs – with a lineup boasting five players with batting averages of .291 and higher – know they’re capable of coming back. And come back they do. They’ve notched nine come-from-behind wins so far this season, and that was the case May 16 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa., when the Chiefs bounced back from three runs down to beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 5-4. Despite being out-hit by seven, the Chiefs overcame a 3-0 deficit through five, and Brian Goodwin’s RBI single in the ninth inning proved the game-winner. Lehigh Valley – top farm club of the Phil-
adelphia Phillies – took an early lead in the second inning. In his first Triple-A at-bat after being optioned from Philadelphia, Darin Ruf homered over the right-field wall against Austin Voth for a 1-0 lead. Although Voth – a 23-year-old right-handed rookie from Redmond, Wash. – is shaping up as Syracuse’s 2016 ace, the IronPigs jumped on him for two more runs over the next two innings. Syracuse finally solved IronPigs starter Mark Appel in the sixth after lead-off hitter Trea Turner singled. Appel then walked Brian Goodwin and Matt den Dekker to load the bases with no outs. After Scott Sizemore popped out, Matt Skole dropped a single into left-center field to score Turner. An error in center field allowed Goodwin to score and den Dekker to advance to third to cut the lead to one. Jason Martinson followed with Chiefs l Page b11
his memory locates the incident not in Syracuse but at Montreal’s old Delorimier Stadium. “Following this incident, I doubled down the left field line and when the next player singled to center, I scored. Passing the Syracuse dugout, I said to one of the players, ‘I guess my cousin is pretty happy now.’” Chiefs historian Ron Gersbacher, who lives in Clay, believes that the black cat incident occurred when the Chiefs played against the Royals in Montreal, and baseball box scores bear him out. On Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1946, the Chiefs were playing a game at Delorimier Stadium when Robinson walloped a double and scored a run as the Royals overwhelmed the visitors, 9-4. There’s no record of Jackie smacking a two-bagger to left during games played at MacArthur Stadium that year, so Gersbacher’s probably right. Regardless of where it happened, however, the black cat incident still stands as a vivid and dramatic example of the kind of abuse directed at Robinson by intolerant fans and ballplayers alike. Fifty years after the fact Chiefs second baseman Garton DelSavio told Post-Standard columnist Sean Kirst that his white teammates – several of whom hailed from the Deep South – “called Robinson some of the foulest names he’d ever heard, the worst things you can scream at another man.” So the hostility was putrid and plentiful, but the Chiefs kept the cat in the bag until they came to Canada that summer.
In honor of Jackie Robinson tribute night with the Chiefs, WCNY-TV channel 24 will rerun the new documentary “Jackie Robinson: A Ken Burns Film” from 7 to 11 p.m., on Wednesday, June 1. But be forewarned: the esteemed Ken Burns and his writers David McMahon and Sarah Burns erred in declaring that the man who broke baseball’s racial barrier was harassed by a black cat thrown onto the field during the 1946 International League season. Burns’ doc debuted as a two-part series on April 11 and 12. Narrator Keith David described the infamous “black cat incident” and claimed it occurred at Syracuse’s MacArthur Stadium during Robinson’s 1946 season with the Montreal Royals. The 1950 film, “The Jackie Robinson Story,” presented a watered-down version in which two fans try to taunt him with a black cat, and Robinson walks over to them, takes the cat into his dugout and pets it. In both of Robinson’s own autobiographies – “My Own Story” (1948) and “I Never Had it Made” (1972) – he remembered, “Syracuse rode me harder than any other city in the circuit. They were tough on me both on the field and in the stands.” He recalled an incident in which a Chiefs player threw a live, black cat onto the diamond and shouted, “Hey, Robinson, here’s your cousin!” The umpire called time out until the frightened cat had been carried off the field, Robinson wrote, but here’s where

They joined and continue to participate and benefit from the support group, Survivors of a Loved One’s Suicide, and have developed friendships with fellow survivors that Derrenbacher describes as a form of sustenance. “They intimately understand my struggles and offer a unique and crucial support system,” she said. The Derrenbachers, friends and family each year participate in the annual 8K Run/3K Walk for HOPE fundraiser as a way of paying it forward while honoring their memory of Reed.

a groundout to short, scoring den Dekker and tying the game. A stroke of luck put the IronPigs got back on the board in the bottom of the frame when a double-play ground ball to short clipped the lip of the infield grass and hopped over Trea Turner and into left field. The comeback kids answered right back in the top of the seventh. Turner tripled off the wall in center to start the inning, and the Syracuse shortstop scored on Goodwin’s groundout to second to square the game at four. Syracuse finished off the impressive comeback in the ninth. Tony Campana pinch-hit and singled to start the inning against Edward Mujica. Turner then moved Campana to second with a sacrifice bunt. Campana scored on Goodwin’s RBI single just past Sweeney at second to give the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. Chiefs closer, right-hander Rafael Martin, retired the IronPigs in order in the ninth to preserve the win, earning his seventh save of the season.

by Donna Newman Sometimes the sweetest, most gentle dogs get overlooked. That’s the case with Annie. Annie came to the shelter when her family could no longer take care of her. She’s as sweet and loving as a dog can be. She’s mellow, trusting, and affectionate. She walks nicely on a leash, she’s patient in the bath, she rides great in the car, she likes to play, and she takes treats gen-
tly. Annie loves people and is a very easy dog to be with. She’s easy-going, a little shy, and very sweet. She would make a wonderful pet for empty-nesters, retirees, grandparents, and families with kids seven and older. Come meet Annie today and see for yourself what a special dog she is! For more information about adopting Annie, call the CNYSPCA at 454-4479 and visit cnyspca.org.

‘Changing America’ exhibit from Smithsonian travels to Peterboro Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863, and the March on Washington, 1963, a national traveling exhibition which explores the relationship between two great people’s movements for equal rights, opens on Saturday, June 4, at the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro. Changing America examines the events leading up to the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and the March on Washington in 1963. Mega Murph set for Memorial Day Clear Path for Veterans, CrossFit gyms partner for first-time event
T
he “Murph” is an epic challenge: onemile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and another one-mile run. All while wearing a 20-pound weight-
ed vest. This Memorial Day, May 30, 17 CrossFit gyms are coming together to support “Mega Murph,” the first of its kind and largest joint effort in New York. In 2005, four Navy SEALs led by LT. Michael P. Murphy were on a mission to capture or kill a key Taliban leader. Outnumbered in a firefight with hundreds of enemy troops and with their communications operator severely wounded, Murphy moved to open ground to use his satellite phone and was mortally wounded making that call. For his selfless actions and devotion to duty, Murphy was posthumously rewarded the Medal of Honor, the first service member to receive the medal for service in Afghanistan, and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam. His story was told in both a book and movie titled “The Lone Survivor.” Clear Path for Veterans will host the Mega Murph at its 78-acre property in Chittenango. Proceeds will benefit the diverse programs at Clear Path and a percentage will be donated to The Murph Foundation, which provides scholarships in Murphy’s name. Clear Path for Veterans, a non-profit organization, is upstate New York’s Veteran Resource Center serving as a hub of information, programs and resources. More than 500 athletes are expected to participate in the Mega Murph at varying levels of ability. Scaled versions of the workout will be available and encouraged, including reduced volume and modified movements. To accommodate the anticipated number of participants, heats of 60 athletes at a time will begin every 45 minutes, starting at 8 a.m. “This is a very unique opportunity to join with fellow CrossFit enthusiasts from around the region to not only honor the legacy of Lt. Murphy but also to help support the thousands of veterans who walk

Murphy and to enjoy great music, food and gorgeous vistas that surround the Clear Path property. Doing this in support of those who serve is a great way to spend Memorial Day.” To feed the participants – along with spectators who purchase a ticket solely for the lunch – an upscale barbecue will be put together by Clear Path’s Culinary Program Director & Executive Chef Adam Coleman, a United States Marine Corps veteran. The barbecue will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entry fee for Murph participants is $30,
and the fee for lunch-only guests is $20; registration at either level includes two drink tickets. An exclusive event T-shirt has been designed by BlueGrit and will be available for $20. For more information or to register, visit clearpath4vets.com and click on calendar. Sponsorship opportunities are still available; contact National Outreach Director Terry Finley at terry@ clearpathforvets.com for details.
