Sacred Sounds and Settings Syracuse and Cazenovia sites to participate in statewide event
T
he New York Landmarks Conservancy’s eighth annual “Sacred Sites Open House,” held May 5 and 6, offers New Yorkers the opportunity to see many of the state’s most impressive sanctuaries and view the artistic treasures of many faiths, styles and periods. More than 150 religious institutions across the state are participating over the weekend. This year’s theme, “Sacred Sounds and Settings,” provides a backdrop for congregations to showcase musical and performance activities via organ demonstrations, concerts and special guided tours of their buildings, as well as highlight other cultural and social programs offered to their communities throughout the year. “This is a wonderful opportunity to hear beautiful music in beautiful spaces,” said Peg Breen, president of The New York Landmarks Conservancy. “It’s also fun to explore great buildings you have walked by but never thought to enter without this special invitation.” Central New York congregations participating in the Open House Weekend to date include: · Saint Marianne Cope Shrine and Museum: 601 North Townsend St., Syracuse; 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5. This contemporary building houses an archive dedicated to Saint Marianne Cope (Syracuse canonized Saint, Oct. 21, 2012). The museum is run by the Sisters of St. Francis. Its beautiful voicing is complimented every Sunday with a small choir. · University United Methodist Church: 1085 East Genesee St., Syracuse; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, May 6. This church has a renowned music program featuring a choir, bell choir, grand piano and organ. The organ was built by Casavant Freres of St. Hyacinth, Quebec and installed in 1970. It includes three manuals and nearly 3,000 pipes. Fortyfive ranks of pipes are exposed, creating a stunning display. The Senior Choir typically consists of 25 voices and
sings in four or five parts accompanied by organ or grand piano. · St. Paul’s Church: 310 Montgomery St., Syracuse; 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, noon–1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. concert Sunday, May 6. St. Paul’s offers performance space for the city’s music groups: Symphoria (musician-led co-op orchestra); Syracuse Vocale Ensemble; Society for New Music; Syracuse Community Choir; and People in the Seats, producers of an annual “Solstice at the Cathedral” event. The St. Paul’s choir sings at two services of Evensong each year, a service of Lessons and Carols in Advent, in addition to weekly worship services. · St. Peter’s Episcopal Church: 10 Mill St., Cazenovia; 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, and 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 6. Habitat gardening seminar planned Expert to teach about garden ecosystems
O
n May 5, Baltimore Woods Nature Center and Habitat Gardening in Central New York (HGCNY), will co-host a gardening seminar designed to teach local gardeners the ecological benefits of using native plants in backyard garden designs. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Baltimore Woods Nature Center, located at 4007 Bishop Hill Road in Marcellus. This event will feature two presentations by Kim Eierman, environmental horticulturist and founder of EcoBeneficial, who specializes in ecological landscapes and native plants. Eierman teaches at the New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Native Plant Center in NY, Rutgers Home Gardeners School and several other institutions. The morning seminar will consist of two sessions with a refreshment break in between. In the first session, held from 9:-10:15 a.m., “Boosting the Ecosystem in Your Own Yard,” Eierman will talk about
the complexity of yard ecosystems. Being aware of this complexity in our landscaping and gardening choices can help increase species diversity, which is important to creating a healthy, thriving ecosystem. In the second session, held from 11 a.m.12:30 p.m., “Dealing with Climate Change in Your Landscape,” Eierman will discuss the steps that home gardeners can take and choices that can be made to help reduce the effects of changing climates and improve the environment around us. HGCNY is a local chapter of Wild Ones, a national organization that works year-round to teach gardeners how creating native plant communities in their gardens can be beneficial to the ecosystem. HGCNY offers monthly educational programs, annual plant sales and field trips, in addition to supporting emerging local native plant nurseries, helping to make native plants easier for home gardeners to obtain. Register at baltimorewoods.org. The cost is $25 for members of Wild Ones/ HGCNY and Baltimore Woods Nature Center; $35 for non-members. Registration will be open through May 1. For any questions, call 315-673-1350.

cnyspca pet of the week
meet polly
Crossword Amelia Beamish
M
by Kelsey Arrison and Donna Newman y golly, Miss Polly! What a pretty girl you are! Polly came to the shelter a scared, undernourished stray. We think this Weimaraner mix is about four years old. She’s timid and shy, and would do best in a quiet, calm home with a family who will give her time to settle in and help her gain confidence. Once she’s comfortable with you, she blossoms, and her sweet personality shines through. Her gentle heart wants nothing more than to have somebody to take her on walks and just spend time with her. If you’re looking for a gentle companion, Polly may be the girl for you. To learn more about adoption, visit cnyspca. org or call 315-454-4479.

Miami nightclub industry veteran named LAVA Nightclub manager Shannon Pearson has been named the new manager of the widely-popular LAVA Nightclub. Pearson, a veteran of the entertainment and beverage industries, expects to bring to Turning Stone the same excitement and flair that has made the clubs in Miami famous worldwide. Pearson is uniquely suited to continue LAVA’s tradition of delivering a high-energy nightclub experience that is simply unparalleled in Upstate New York, drawing upon her previous work in VIP relations and as an artist liaison. Most recently, Pearson was the General Manager of Floyd, a live music cocktail lounge in downtown
Miami. In that role, Pearson oversaw operations and branding, developed menu and craft cocktail menus and promoted growth through securing sponsorships, marketing and working with musical artists. “LAVA has built a loyal following and is constantly going above and beyond to create incredible experiences for guests,” said Pearson. “I’m very excited about taking LAVA to an even higher level.” Recently named the No. 1 Best Nightclub in New York by Casino Player Magazine, the 21,000 square foot nightclub features two levels of entertainment, along with a seasonal outdoor patio with private cabanas. With more
Shannon Pearson than 40 VIP booths, LAVA is the only club in Central New York offering true European VIP bottle service. LAVA is open from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday night.

Wildlife Festival with a great lineup of family-friendly activities,” said Chris Lajewski, center director at the Montezuma Audubon Center. “This is our largest event of the year and we look forward to welcoming people from across the Finger Lakes Region to celebrate the importance of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex as a critically important habitat for 300 bird species including the Bald Eagle, Osprey, Wood Thrush and Cerulean Warbler. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Montezuma Audubon Center’s conservation projects and environmental education programs to inspire the future stewards of our precious natural resources.”
Three to be awarded Onondaga Historical Association Medals
T
he 2018 Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) Medal will be awarded to three individuals: Michael Moss for his work in preserving and advancing the history of Onondaga County’s Jewish community; Alissa Viti, manager of Charitable and Community Relations at M&T Bank, for her dedication to educating the public about our community’s history through the funding of OHA programs and exhibitions; and Allen Naples for his leadership and his commitment to financing the restoration and adaptive reuse of the area’s historic architecture, an important component of the community’s very identity.
This year’s event will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, at the Persian Terrace in the beautifully restored Marriott Syracuse Downtown (formerly the Hotel Syracuse.) The OHA Medal is the highest honor that this organization can bestow for contributions made to the cause of preserving and interpreting the area’s heritage. The OHA Medal is a two-sided, bronze piece struck in 1894 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Onondaga County. This is only the 27th OHA Medal ceremony since its inception in 1945. Ticket prices vary; reservations can be made by visiting cnyhistory.org/2018-medal.
