25th Tournament of HOPE set for May 15 This year’s event held in memory of local nurse Betty Ann Brown

W

By Tami Scott

hen siblings Kim and Greg Brown were asked to describe their mom for HOPE for Bereaved’s upcoming annual Tournament of HOPE dedication, their words spoke volumes. Both spoke of Betty Ann Brown with reverence and love, regarding her as a devoted mother, friend, mentor and advocate. Brown enjoyed a successful and rewarding 30-year career as a radiation oncology nurse at Upstate Medical Center, and earned numerous accolades over the years. She was the recipient of the Syracuse University Chancellor’s Award, Nursing Excellence Award, and the NACCP Community Service Award. She co-founded the Syracuse Area Black Nurses Association (SABNA) and the Syracuse University sponsored GENESIS project, which promotes health and wellness among African-American communities in the Syracuse area. “Her devotion to her family and career were understandably her highest priorities,” they wrote for HOPE’s monthly newsletter. HOPE for Bereaved is a nonprofit organization that provides support, resources and hope for grieving children, adults and families. Brown died in May 2014 after a courageous battle with breast cancer and metastatic brain cancer. This year, HOPE for Bereaved is dedicating its 25th annual Tournament of HOPE in her memory. “Betty was an avid golfer,” said HOPE volunteer Margie Nye, noting that she often played a round of golf at the Cavalry Club in Syracuse with her Nine-Hole League. Both Betty’s children approached the local not-for-profit organization last year about becoming a sponsor for this year’s event. “In years past, if a loved one died and they loved to golf, [the family] would do a golf tournament, and usually those golf tournaments would last for anywhere from three to six years and then they would kind of fizzle out. Golf tournaments are a lot of work,” Nye said. Three years ago, HOPE decided to dedicate its long-established tournament each year to a different person. “HOPE for Bereaved has recognized that when somebody dies, one of the things that’s really important to their survivors is that they’re remembered. And this is one of those times.” The 25th Annual Tournament of HOPE will be held on Monday, May 15 at Baldwinsville’s Timber Banks, a Jack

Nicklaus designed golf course. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a team captains meeting at 10:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Romano Subaru, of Syracuse, is donating a brand new vehicle to the first person who makes a hole-in-one. Cost is $125 per person ($500 per foursome; $1,000 per foursome with sponsorBetty Ann Brown ship), which includes greens fees, cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages and contests. For registration or sponsorship information, visit hopeforbereaved.com, email hopeforbereaved@cnymail.com or call 315-475-HOPE (4673) and ask for Joyce Ryan or Walt Stein. Rain date is Tuesday, May 16. Hope for Bereaved provides core services free-of-charge to anyone experiencing the death of someone close to them. Proceeds from the event will fund these services, which include 12 different monthly support groups, one-on-one counseling and a monthly newsletter. “It’s [our] mission [at HOPE] to make sure that we are here for the people that need us and that there’s no price tag attached to [the services] because grief is its own issue, [people] don’t need to worry about whether they can pay for it,” Nye said. “That’s been the mission from the very beginning, that my mom [founder Therese Schoeneck] wanted to make sure that help was offered to anybody no matter where they came from or what their religion or whether or not they could make a donation.” Hope also holds grief workshops for daycare providers, onsite bereavement support for employees dealing with grief in the workplace, school resource kits, along with training and resources for helping individuals with developmental disabilities cope with grief. Additionally, the organization has grown to include training, consultation and resources for those who wish to help the bereaved.

fter a dismal start in which they lost seven of their first nine games, the Syracuse Chiefs climbed steadily up the International League North Division standings during an impressive six-game winning streak, May 16-23. Three of those victories came at home while three were won on the road in Rochester and Norfolk. The win streak was snapped April 25 when the Durham Bulls squeaked by the visiting Chiefs 4-3, at North Carolina’s Athletic Park. The Bulls gored Syracuse again on April 26, winning a day-game by 5-2. The Bulls are the Triple-A farm team of the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Chiefs’ parent club is the Washington Nationals. During their win streak, the Chiefs reached .500 on the strength of impact performances by hitters Clint Robinson, Brian Goodwin, Caleb Ramsey and Corban Joseph as well as rookies Irving Falu and Adrian Sanchez. Starting righthanders Austin Voth, Taylor Hill and A.J. Cole each won a game, and the bullpen re-

mained reliable – at least until April 26. That morning Chiefs first baseman Matt Skole homered for the second game in a row, but Syracuse lost its second game in 18 hours. Voth got stuck with the loss after allowing just 3 runs in four and two-thirds innings, but the Chiefs’ two relievers were a bigger disappointment as both Austin Adams and Trevor Gott allowed an earned run, rather than hold steady in a one-run game. The Chiefs lineup is potent enough this season to produce plenty of late-inning comebacks, but in order to do so the bullpen has got shut the door. Although losing the night before in Durham, the Chiefs’ bullpen put forth a dominant effort with righties Dustin Antolin, Rafael Martin, and lefty Neal Cotts combining for four and one-third scoreless innings. That extended the bullpen’s run to 11 consecutive scoreless innings, which was snapped Wednesday morning when Adams walked a leadoff batter who eventually scored. And Gott – one of the Chief ’s hardest hurlers – gave up a home-run to Cuban slugger Dayron Varona in the eighth. At press time, the Chiefs had posted a

record of eight wins and nine losses.

Bisons follow Sox

The Chiefs host the Pawtucket Red Sox at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday May 3, and 6:35 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at NBT Bank Stadium, on the city’s North Side. The Buffalo Bisons stampede into Syracuse for games at 6:35 p.m. Monday, May 8, 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, and 10:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 10. The Bisons are affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays. Don’t forget, every Thursday is Dollar Thursday on which fans can enjoy $1 Hofmann Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola products and $2 Coors, LaBatt, Saranac and 1911 products. Ticket prices range between $9 and $14, and there are discounts for children, seniors and military personnel; parking costs $5; 474-7833. The New York Yankees’ top farm club – the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders – makes its first visit to NBT Bank Stadium this season May 11-14. All Chiefs games will be broadcast by WSKO-AM The Score 1260, with announcers Kevin Brown and Eric Gallanty. The Score 1260 is a part of the Cumulus Radio Group.

Check.Change.Control.Cholesterol American Heart Association survey finds patients uncertain about how to best manage their cholesterol

S

urvey findings will help inform new initiative to raise awareness, empower patients and providers to better understand and manage high cholesterol People who have high cholesterol may understand they need to manage their condition, but many aren’t sure how to do that, nor do they feel confident they can, according to a new survey from the American Heart Association. The survey was conducted as part of Check.Change.Control.Cholesterol™, the association’s new initiative to help people better understand and manage their overall risk for cardiovascular disease, especially as it relates to cholesterol. Participants included nearly 800 people from across the country with either a history of cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attack, stroke) or at least one major cardiovascular disease risk factor, (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes). “We wanted to get a sense of what people know about their cholesterol risk and its connection to heart disease and stroke, as well as how people engage with their healthcare providers to manage their risks,” said Mary Ann Bauman, M.D., a member of the American Heart Association’s cholesterol advisory group. “We found even

among these patients, only 29 percent recognized they were high risk for another cardiovascular disease event. ✓ Primary care providers were the healthcare professionals who participants talked about cholesterol with most often, and were more likely the ones to first diagnose high cholesterol. ✓ The most common treatment recommendation given by healthcare providers were medication (79 percent), exercise (78 percent) and diet modifications (70 percent). ✓ Patients with high cholesterol felt they were least informed about what should be their target body weight, the differences between the types of cholesterol (LDL vs HDL) and goals for cholesterol management. Nearly 94.6 million, or 40 percent, of American adults, have total cholesterol above 200 mg/dL with approximately 12 percent over 240 mg/dL. “Research suggests even modestly elevated cholesterol levels can lead to heart disease later in life, but these survey results show an alarming lack of communication between healthcare providers and those most at risk for cardiovascular disease,” Bauman said. “Current guidelines call for lifestyle modifications as a first line treat-

ment, but that’s often not enough. We also need to talk to patients about other risk factors, including genetics and family history, to determine the most effective course of treatment for each individual.” The Check.Change.Control.Cholesterol initiative combines a public awareness campaign with guideline-based best practices to help providers and patients work together to identify cardiovascular health risks and agree on a treatment plan to improve health. Through the initiative, a pilot project will be carried out in select practices across the country. Learnings from the pilot project will help structure a national clinical initiative to be rolled out next year. A national cholesterol summit will convene on April 11 in Dallas to bring together cholesterol patients, healthcare providers and other stakeholder leaders to discuss gaps in cholesterol management goals — from diagnosis to treatment to adherence. The group’s goal is to identify tangible, actionable solutions that can be implemented through the new cholesterol initiative. Check.Change.Control.Cholesterolis nationally supported by Sanofi and Regeneron. Learn more about the new initiative at heart.org/CheckChangeControlCholesterol.

among those people at the highest risk for heart disease and stroke, overall knowledge was lacking and there was a major disconnect between perceptions about cholesterol and the significance of its health impact.” High cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke, causing about 2.6 million deaths each year. Yet, nearly half (47 percent) of survey respondents with a known history of or at least one risk factor for heart disease or stroke, had not had their cholesterol checked within the past year. Respondents with high cholesterol reported more recent testing, although 21 percent of them had not had their cholesterol checked in the past year. Among other survey findings: ✓ Most people with high cholesterol said they understood the importance of managing their cholesterol, being confused, discouraged and uncertain about their ability to do so. ✓ 82 percent of all respondents identified a link between cholesterol and risk for heart disease and stroke. ✓ Overall, people with a history of cardiovascular had lower perceptions of their real medical risk of cardiovascular disease. ✓ Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease are at high risk for having another cardiovascular disease event, but

Program gets grant for offering training to woman veterans

T

he U.S. Small Business Administration recently awarded $300,000 in Women Veteran Entrepreneurship Training Program grants to three organizations offering small business development resources to women veterans and military spouses. The funding opportunity, offered by SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development, supports each organization’s entrepreneurial training programs for women who are veterans, service members and spouses of veterans and service members. Each awardee was chosen based on their demonstrated history of and commit-

ment to providing training programs and resources to women. “Increasingly, women small business owners are contributing in a major way to the growth of the U.S. economy, and women veterans bring a unique and valued skill set to entrepreneurship,” SBA Administrator Linda McMahon said. “Funding these organizations involved in helping women veterans and military spouses establish successful businesses will go a long way towards securing the future for these women and their families.” The Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse Uni-

versity’s program, Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) was awarded $135,000 as part of the program. V-WISE is an intensive three-phase program containing a 15-day online preparatory course, a two-day residency program and post-training technical support. IVMF also offers an accelerated version of the course called “IGNITE.” Both programs are open to applicants nationwide. The other two organizations receiving grants were Entrepreneurial Program for Innovation and Collaboration (EPIC) and Bunker in a Box at Bunker Labs and the San Antonio

Lift Fund. Female veteran-owned small businesses represent a burgeoning economic powerhouse in the military small business community. As of 2012, female veterans owned 383,302 businesses, generating $17.9 billion in sales. From 2007 to 2012, despite representing only 15.2 percent of all veteran-owned businesses, the number of small businesses owned by veterans who are women increased by 294.7 percent. For more information about opportunities for veterans available through the SBA, visit sba.gov/vets.

Turning Stone earns Golf Digest’s 2017 Editors’ Choice Award for Best Travel Just as the 2017 golf season is launching, Turning Stone Resort Casino’s championship courses are once again being recognized by one of the sport’s leading national publications. Oneida Nation Homelands (April 13, 2017) – Turning Stone Resort Casino is kicking off the 2017 golf season with yet another accolade to add to its already impressive list of prestigious recognitions in the sport. The world-class courses at the Upstate New York destination resort were just honored with Golf Digest’s Editors’ Choice Award for Best Travel in 2017. Launched last year, Golf Digest’s Editors’ Choice Award for Best Travel identifies “The Best Things in Golf ” with an emphasis on lifestyle properties, products and services. Turning Stone, and the other 2017 winners, will be highlighted in the May issue of Golf Digest. The newest accolade fittingly comes just as the 2017 golf season is launching at Turning Stone. With both Sandstone Hollow and Pleasant Knolls opening earlier this week, Shenendoah is set to open tomorrow, April 14, followed by Kaluhyat

on Friday, April 21 and Atunyote on Thursday, April 27. This spring, Turning Stone will also celebrate the grand re-opening of its popular Shenendoah course, which was recently redesigned by original architect, the renowned Rick Smith. After nearly a year-long redesign the resort’s original 18-hole course has seven completely new holes. The course was built and is maintained to comply with stringent Audubon International standards for environmental protection and preservation. Smith who used the natural landscape to create wooded parkland holes, says of the redesign, “While Shenendoah has always been a great golf experience, after the redesign, it’s even better.” Designed, constructed and maintained to PGA Tour standards at more than 7,000 yards, the course offers five tee boxes on every hole creating the perfect experience for any level player. The golf courses at Turning Stone have been repeatedly ranked among the nation’s finest courses by Golf Digest and other top publications. Turning Stone’s Atunyote and Kaluhyat were hailed by Golf Digest

on its coveted 2015-2016 list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, distinguishing it as the only resort in the Northeast with two or more courses on this esteemed list, and was also named in the top 10 courses in the entire state of New York by Golfweek. These two first-rate courses, along with the gorgeous Shenendoah, are also consistently included on Golfweek’s elite list of the country’s Best Casino Courses. In addition to award-winning, championship golf, Turning Stone’s 3,400-acre resort features four hotels, more than 20 restaurants and dining options, two luxurious spas, an all-new 125,000-square foot gaming floor, a variety of concert and event venues and several nightlife options with live weekend entertainment. The award-winning resort hosts more than 4.5 million visitors a year. SU students channel Greek gods during Derby Days Red Bull Chariot Race raised money for area charities

This isn’t your grandma’s Toga party. Red Bull Chariot Race returned April 22 to Syracuse University to unite ancient Greek sport with modern Greek life and good-spirited rivalry at the culmination of Derby Days. Derby Days is a philanthropy initiative implemented by 242 Sigma Chi chapters across the world. SU’s week-long event consists of various events and fundraisers engaging all the University’s Greek life to raise funds for area charities. At Red Bull Chariot Race, 12 SU sororities competed for glory using only their brute strength, speed and craft designing skills and SU’s Sigma Chi brothers were tasked with supporting each team and helping to bring these epic chariots to life on the battlefield at Thornden Park. Each sorority elected three toga-clad competitors to power, steer, and navigate their foot powered, non-equestrian vehicle through the challenging course of hairpin turns and obstacles. The teams and their chariots were judged by the official Red Bull Chariot Race judging panel, with only one team taking home all the glory and of course, a very fancy trophy. “What better way to conclude a Greek-life fundraising week than with an old fashion Chariot Race,” said Brett Polinsky, Derby Days Chairman of the Syracuse University chapter of Sigma Chi. “This unique event really ends things with a bang and celebrates the work everyone has done to support our incredible charity partners.” Donations collected by Sigma Chi during Derby Days will go directly to support Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Destroy confidential documents at May 6 shredding event

Residents able to protect their identity and recycle shredded materials for free Onondaga County households are invited to collect their confidential documents and bring them to OCRRA’s May 6 paper shredding event for secure destruction. The event happens from 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, May 6 at NBT Bank Stadium, 1 Tex Simone Drive, Syracuse. Confidata, a division of Empire Recycling Corporation, and Shred Solvers are collaborating with OCRRA to help residents prevent identity theft and ensure that their shredded paper is recycled. Both Confidata and Shred Solvers are local document shredding companies with mobile shredding vehicles. This event will also include an element of giving back to veterans in our local community struggling with hunger. As they approach the shredding area, attendees are encouraged to make a voluntary donation to Feed our Vets, a nonprofit organization that helps veteran families whose circumstances have left them on the battlefield of hunger. Monetary or non-perishable food donations are welcome. Visit feedourvets. org/much-needed-items/ for a list preferred items. “More than 130,000 veterans are homeless and hungry on any given night in America,â€? said Rick Synek, executive director and founder of Feed our Vets. “Food or monetary donations Shred-o-Rama attendees bring in go direct to stocking our

mobile food pantry that feeds veterans in the Syracuse area. Personal records from a household such as medical documents, bank information, tax documents and other items containing account numbers or private details are ideal for drop off. Attendees do not need a reservation and there is no charge, thanks to Confidata and Shred Solvers’ generous donation of their time and talent. Participants should do the following: Bring no more than five boxes of documents generated or received at home, per vehicle. Only materials generated at home will be accepted. Materials from businesses are not accepted at the event. Workplaces in need of shredding services should visit ocrra.org or contact a shredding service. Enter the stadium parking lot from the Grant Boulevard / Hiawatha Boulevard intersection. Pack confidential documents, loosely, in durable boxes, containers or paper bags. (Avoid bringing items in plastic bags as they slow down the shredding process.) Remove binders or other non-paper contaminants. Stay in their vehicle. There is no need for participants to exit their vehicles as the event is full service; staff unloads all vehicles. From entrance to exit, wait times average between five and ten minutes.

Confidata employees empty confidential documents from a resident’s car prior to shredding the material at the 2016 Shred-o-Rama at NBT Bank Stadium. “Reduce your confidential papers by requesting digital statements whenever possible, said Theresa Evans, OCRRA recycling specialist. “But for those confidential hard copy items still on hand, come to OCRRA’s Shred-o-Rama. Once shredded, your documents will be safely and securely

recycled into new paper products like napkins, paper towels and toilet paper. Since OCRRA started hosting shredding events in 2004, more than 1 million pounds of personal papers have been safely shredded and recycled.

Community mural featuring Harriet Tubman to debut May 4

The Schweinfurth Art Center will celebrate the installation a 32foot wide crocheted mural of Harriet Tubman on the front of the Art Center from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4. Over 150 community volunteers have created the mural by crocheting two-by-two-foot squares under the direction of visiting artist, Olek. The event is free and open to the public. The mural is part of the Love Across the USA crochet project by Olek, an internationally recognized artist whose work amplifies the voices of women. Olek’s goal is to create a large scale mural in every state, celebrating strong female figures in U.S. history. For the state of New York, Olek is featuring two women: Harriet Tubman in Auburn, and Susan B. Anthony in Rochester. Auburn will be one of the first cities in the country to complete the project. The installation of the mural will begin in the morning on May 4. Olek will be unrolling the mural from the roof of the Art Center, and a film-maker will be onsite documenting the event in the afternoon. Students from Genesee Elementary will perform at 6:15 p.m., and the Auburn Community Chorus will perform at 6:30pm. Olek will be on hand to talk about the project. Light refreshments will be provided. The Schweinfurth Art Center hosted three free workshops in March where Olek taught participants how to crochet and distributed instructions. The mural was

People of all skill levels and backgrounds participated. Olek will return to Auburn to connect the squares a few days before the installation, with the assistance of her team and local volunteers. This project was made possible by Olek, sponsorship from the Senator John A. About Olek

As an active supporter of women’s rights, Olek has worked with women around the world to create public art and performance pieces that advocate for women’s issues. Olek has been inspired to bring that work back to the United States, and to celebrate positive women’s voices in our communities. 100,000 diapers later, CNY Diaper Bank still going strong Nonprofit organization aims to collect 50,000 diapers this Mother’s Day

The CNY Diaper Bank, a local nonprofit that collects diapers for local families in need, is holding its second annual “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive this May. The diaper bank aims to collect 50,000 diapers – a number that is more than double that of last year’s inaugural “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive collection of 22,846 diapers. Community members, businesses and organizations from across Central New York are encouraged to participate by hosting a diaper drive, holding fundraisers, donating diapers at collection points or attending one of the events hosted by the diaper bank throughout the month. “It’s hard to believe that the CNY Diaper Bank will be a year old this May,” said Michela Hugo, founder. “We are extremely grateful that in just 11 months we have distributed

more than 100,000 diapers to families. This all would not be possible without a tremendous amount of support from the community and our growing network of partner agencies. Diapers are a basic need for babies. They cannot go without them. Part of our goal is to raise awareness that diaper need exists and to motivate others to take action.” Since May 2016, The CNY Diaper Bank has doubled the size of its network from six agencies to 12, moved into a new location and was one of Jet.com’s top fundraisers during the JetCares February donation period. The diaper bank is now distributing over 14,000 diapers and reaching close to 300 families each month. To kick off its second year, local businesses, churches, Scout groups, neighborhoods and schools are encouraged to help the CNY Diaper Bank expand and grow its reach by hosting their own diaper drives. The CNY Diaper Bank offers a “Diaper Drive Toolkit” that includes information on how to hold a diaper drive and tips for getting

the word out. The diaper bank recommends holding the drive for one to three weeks during the “Make a Mother’s Day” drive, with diapers being dropped off or picked up. Individuals and businesses can also support the cause by volunteering or donating money through “Dollars for Diapers” fundraisers, such as collecting money for an office wide “dress-down day.” The CNY Diaper Bank can then use that money to purchase diapers in bulk for an average cost of just 13 cents per diaper compared with more than 25-35 cents. The CNY Diaper Bank was founded after Hugo learned that local agencies were forced to turn away families who needed diapers. Hugo used the support and guidance of the National Diaper Bank Network to start a diaper bank in Syracuse. An adequate supply of diapers for one child can cost $100 per month, and a healthy child will require about 2,600 diaper changes per year. In addition, families in poverty spend nearly 15 percent of their income on diapers. Furthermore, diapers are not covered by SNAP or WIC benefits.

Make a Mother’s Day Fit and Fabulous Fitness Classes Saturday, May 6, 6-11 a.m. Towne Center Fitness & Health Club, 311 Towne Drive, Fayetteville, N.Y. 13066 Saturday, May 6 from 6 to 11 a.m., the CNY Diaper Bank invites moms of all ages and fitness levels to join in the “Make a Mother’s Day Fit and Fabulous” group fitness class fundraiser at Towne Center Fitness & Health Club in Fayetteville. Classes are $20 each for the first class and $15 each for additional classes and include yoga, spinning, Baby Bootcamp, TRX and more. There will also be breakfast and a basket raffle. All proceeds from this event will go to the diaper bank. For more info on both events, visit cnydiaperbank.org. The diaper bank is also accepting money or diaper donations mailed to: Central New York Diaper Bank Inc., 201 W. Genesee St., No. 147, Syracuse, N.Y. 13204.
