Taste of Syracuse hits downtown Friday-Saturday

C

entral New York’s biggest food and music festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, in and around Clinton Square. Admission is free. The Taste of Syracuse will have non-stop music for two days. Multi-platinum and Grammy-nominated band Smash Mouth, will headline the festival on Saturday night on the Express Mart Main Stage. A total of 34 bands will play over the course of the weekend. Festival goers will have the chance to try delicious items from local eateries for only $1. Several new restaurants and vendors have signed on and one fan favorite, Bonefish Grill, will be returning after their one-year hiatus from the event. The Taste of Syracuse will once again feature Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Syracuse will be a qualifying stop for this famous eating competition. Festival goers can watch this from the main stage on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Taste of Syracuse will feature a “Warrior Weekend” theme. The festival will pay honor to the various warriors from our community and collect donations for two charitable organizations, Vera House and Clear Path for Veterans. All proceeds from the TOPS tent and prize wheel will be donated to charity. On Saturday, select restaurants and food vendors will offer two samples for $1 to those with a special wristband. A limited number of these wristbands will be available at The Summit Federal Credit Union tent. Wristbands can be obtained with a minimum donation of $5. All wristband proceeds go directly to the charities.

After several months of negotiations, the Boards of Directors and the leadership of Hospice of the Finger Lakes (HFL) and Hospice of Central New York (HCNY) have filed the necessary papers to merge the healthcare agencies in accordance with New York State law. Upon approval by New York State Department of Health, the combined organizations will function as one entity. HCNY will use the Hospice of the Finger Lakes name in Cayuga County. The filing of these papers follows several months of discussion and negotiation between the two organizations. HFL has been working for several years with clinical staff from HCNY, assisting with initial assessments of patients referred to our agency from Syracuse hospitals. This collaboration has expedited the referral and admission process; and been fiscally prudent saving on staff time and travel. “Hospice of Central New York is excited about this merger. HFL has an excellent reputation and we felt our longstanding relationship gave both organizations the confidence that this merger will strengthen our shared mission to bring high-quality, compassionate care to people with life-limiting illness and support to their loved ones,” said Cynthia Chandler, CEO Hospice of CNY. “Although HFL has managed through some significant challenges, it has become increasingly difficult for small agencies like HFL to thrive and provide the level of services necessary. Fortunately, due to strong management, coupled with the generous support from our many private fundraising activities, our Thrift Shop and grants, we have been able to continue to provide the compassionate service our communities have grown to expect. We believe this merger will allow the organization to function more efficiently in today’s healthcare world,” said Tim Callahan, President of the Board, HFL. For the past 30 years, Hospice of the Finger Lakes has provided end-of-life services in Cayuga County and western Onondaga County. The staff and volunteers have provided com-

passionate care to more than 3,500 patients and their families. Hospice services are provided by a team of professionals (including physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers, volunteers, and therapists) all working together to support terminally ill patients and their loved ones. The medical, psychological, and spiritual support, provided by hospice helps individuals and their families to live with comfort and dignity. HCNY intends to offer HFL’s staff positions in the new organization. In addition, volunteers who currently support HFL will be offered the opportunity to continue to volunteer in the area. HFL has 21 employees and approximately 100 volunteers. HFL plans to maintain their fundraising arm as a means of support for hospice and palliative care in our community and will maintain office space in the current Auburn, New York location. The agreement also calls for HFL to be given two seats on HCNY’s Board of Directors. HFL will begin the official transition planning and implementation upon approval of the New York State Department of Health Certificate of Need application. HFL will continue to operate in the ordinary course of business until the merger is finalized. Hospice of the Finger Lakes has provided quality, end-of-life services in our community for over 30 years. HFL was officially established in 1988. Our dedicated staff and volunteers have offered comfort care to over 3,500 patients and families during this time. The HFL service area includes Cayuga County and the townships of Skaneateles, Spafford and Elbridge in western Onondaga County. Hospice of Central New York The HCNY began in the late 1970’s and was known as The Caring Coalition since 1981. The agency was certified in 1985 by Medicare as a provider of hospice services and became known as Hospice of Central New York. At any given time, Hospice of Central New York serves about 150 patients and families.

Festival celebrates ‘Madeline’ and her connection to Oswego The beloved children’s book character Madeline and her real-life connection to Oswego will be celebrated June 2 during the “Madeline in Oswego: Bemelmans’ Festival” at Fort Ontario. Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the popular children’s books about the little girl named Madeline, served as a private in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Ontario in 1917. At the time, Fort Ontario was the largest Army hospital installation in the United States. The 19-year-old Bemelmans served as an orderly in hospital units and at other locations around the fort. He wrote a memoir about his time in Oswego, “My War with the United States,” in 1937 and published his first Madeline book in 1939. “The festival will celebrate the Madeline books with crafts, children’s games, book readings, a children’s parade, and performances of ‘Madeline and the Gypsies,’ an original skit written by Oswego playwright Rick Sivers,” said Mary Kay Stone, organizing committee chair.

The festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Fort Ontario grounds and at the nearby Art Association of Oswego at the end of East Fourth Street. Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite Madeline character for the children’s parade at 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Oswego, the parade will be followed by an ice cream social inside the fort. The art association will offer kite-making, Madeline hat decorating and crafts with carnival animals. Weather permitting, members of the New York Kite Enthusiasts will fly their colorful and unique kites in the skies over Fort Ontario. There will be free admission to the fort, sponsored by Friends of Fort Ontario. Food concessions will be available. Artists of all ages are invited to submit artwork depicting a Madeline book character in an Oswego County location for the “Madeline in Oswego Art Show.” Artwork will be displayed in the Art Association gallery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fri-

day, Saturday and Sunday, June 1 through 3. Artwork should be no larger than 16 by 20 inches and mounted on poster board no larger than 18 by 24 inches. Entries will be accepted at the Art Association from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19, and from 1 to 2 p.m.Sunday, May 20. For information about the art show, contact Laurie Kester at 315343-6599. For information about the festival, call Fort Ontario State Historic Site at 315-343-4711 or visit historicfortontario.com. For Oswego County visitor information, call 1-800-248-4386 (1-800-248-4FUN) or go to visitoswegocounty.com. “Madeline in Oswego” is the theme of the Bemelmans Festival at the Oswego Art Association and Fort Ontario Park Saturday, June 2. The event includes children’s crafts and games, kiteflying, a children’s parade, skits, book-readings, and an exhibit of Madeline-themed artwork by local artists. courtesy of Oswego Art Association

Miller time! By Russ Tarby

One of the great things about Triple-A baseball is watching veteran ballplayers work their way back up to the major leagues. Case in point, righthanded pitcher Justin Miller failed to return to the Show with the Los Angeles Angels last year after making 40 appearances with the Colorado Rockies in 2016. He earned nine saves with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City but also posted a disappointing 5.48 earned-run average. So Miller signed a minorleague contract with the Washington Nationals in January and is now hurling for Syracuse Chiefs in the International League. During the winter, Miller was given little chance to make a mark in D.C. “Now 30, Miller will be a long shot to earn a regular role with Washington at any point in 2018,” according to Jeff Erickson’s RotoWire fantasy baseball service in January.

But by the time May

rolled around, Washington Post reporter Chelsea James had taken notice of Miller’s recent accomplishments. She reported that he’s averaging around 95

mph with his fastball this year in Syracuse. That’s a significant improvement over 2017, when Miller’s heater clocked in at an average 90 mph. During the offseason, the 215-pound, 6-foot-3 pitcher worked on his mechanics and fitness. As a result, his velocity has noticeably increased and his experience has shaped him into a pitcher rather than a thrower. Over his first 10 appearances for the Chiefs this season, Miller has yet to allow a run through 13 and 2/3 innings while notching 23 strikeouts. In fact, the big, bearded righty struck out four batters each four times in those 10 tries. Miller gives every indication that he has returned to his 2016 form when he whiffed 45 National League batters in 42 and 2/3 innings for the Rockies.

CNY Playhouse to present ‘Into the Woods’ in 10 performances from June 8-23 The Central New York Playhouse will present its second musical production of 2018, “Into the Woods.” The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack,

actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim’s most popular works, “Into the Woods” is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy.

Crouse Health earns national designation as Comprehensive Stroke Center

C

rouse Health has received certification from DNV GL - Healthcare as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of regional experience for the treatment of serious stroke events. DNV GL Healthcare is one of the leading accrediting agencies in the U.S. The DNV GL - Healthcare Comprehensive Stroke Center certification is based on quality standards established by the federal Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that the recipient hospital addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education while establishing clear

metrics to evaluate outcomes. With this latest designation, Crouse becomes one of just 10 hospitals in New York State to have earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. “Not only is this great news for Crouse, it is also great news for our patients and the community,” said Crouse Health CEO Kimberly Boynton. “ Working together with our physicians, nurses, interventional techs and the rest of the clinical team, this designation is a reflection of Crouse’s clinical excellence in meeting the most rigorous quality and process standards in treating stroke.” Crouse has been a New York

State-designated Primary Stroke Center since 2007. Comprehensive stroke centers are typically the largest, best-equipped hospitals in a given geographical area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. Crouse is the only hospital in the region equipped with two hybrid operating room suites, allowing the stroke team to provide the most advanced endovascular stroke rescue capabilities. “With stroke care you must have the best clinicians and resources, but also the ability to act organizationally with extreme efficiency because of the time-critical nature of these events,” said Tarakad Ra-

machandran, MD, medical director of Crouse’s stroke program. “Official certification from DNV GL validates all the effort we have put into this program to ensure the health and safety of our patients.” “Achieving certification shows commitment to excellence,” said Patrick Horine, CEO of DNV GL - Healthcare. “And it helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.”
