go for a ‘spin’ AT cny fIBER aRTS fESTIVAL
T
he CNY Fiber Arts Festival will return on June 10 and 11 to Bouckville, bringing activities for the whole family, an inside view of local agriculture, a little history, animals, music, food and inspiration for artists and crafters. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Butternut Hill Campground, on Route 20 in Bouckville and celebrates fiber animals – sheep, goats, alpacas, llamas and Angora rabbits – and the fiber arts: spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, knitting and crochet. The Children’s Tent will offer the opportunity to try basic needle-felting, weaving, knitting and other crafts, with kids taking their creations home. Young children can build an imaginary farm using a model barn, paint and color farm animals, decorate animal masks, play with baby goats and lambs and use interactive exhibits to learn about exotic fiber and the process that transforms raw fiber into a finished garment. The focus this year is on spinning, the ancient art of transforming raw fiber into yarn. Many of the 110 vendor booths will feature spinning demonstrations and there will be a Wheel Corral, where experienced spinners can try out different wheels and visitors with no spinning experience at all can get a feel for the process. Visitors who want to learn more about spinning or other arts can sign up for workshops or take one of the short, one-hour courses that will leave plenty of time for wandering and shopping. Special guest artists will present talks each day as well. Garry Aney, interpreter of textiles at the Farmers Museum in Cooperstown, will provide a historical timeline for hand spinning and talk about fiber prepara-

It was a great success, and the participants recognized the need for an independent fiber festival in CNY and a fiber “guild” that would welcome both livestock producers and fiber artists. Their commitment to education has been demonstrated through a public workshop called “Is there a Fiber Animal in Your Future?,” the teaching of felting at a middle school submitted photos in Syracuse, and the publication of a tion systems from a historical perspec- Resource Guide of individuals willing tive. Space in a workshop can be reserved using information on the website cnyfiber.org. Also at the festival, the versatile and popular Tim Carr returns to sing for visitors and an assortment of food vendors will serve up both healthy and decadent meals to enjoy under the dining canopy. All of the vendor booths and demonstrations are under cover, except for the sheepdog demonstration, just in case Central New York fails to provide perfect weather. This will be the seventh fiber arts festival held at Butternut Hill Campground in Bouckville, although the organization behind it, CNY Fiber Artists and Producers, came into being through a similar event two years earlier. In 2009, a small, diverse group of fiber farmers and fiber artists came together to create an event called “Fo-

CNY Fiber Artists and Producers Inc. gratefully acknowledges the support of the Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement program, a combined effort of Farm Credit East, Yankee Farm Credit and CoBank. The festival is also supported by the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. It is administered by CNY Arts.

‘Birds, Bees and Blooms’ Pollinator-friendly plants to be featured at plant sale The first weekend in June, Baltimore Woods Nature Center, located at 4007 Bishop Hill Road in Marcellus, will kick off the summer season with a native plant sale and garden festival. For the past 27 years, Baltimore Woods has held a plant and herb sale to help local gardeners start their spring planting. Over the last five years, this event has expanded to include a garden cafe, vendor booths featuring nature- and garden-inspired merchandise, local foods, and more. This year’s sale runs Friday, June 2, from 4-7 p.m., Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Sunday, June 4, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This event takes place rain or shine with no admission or parking fees, and the proceeds from the sale support Baltimore Woods in its mission of environmental education. With a theme of “Birds, Bees and Blooms,” the sale is focused on native plants that attract and provide habitats for birds, bees and butterflies. To help learn more about pollinators, there will be several special features woven into the weekend activities. On Saturday, heirloom tomato expert and master gardener Pat Jokajtys of Baldwinsville will teach visitors about the best companion plants for growing heirloom tomatoes. Also, from 10-11 a.m. Saturday morning, Baltimore Woods’ staff will hold a container gardening workshop on the back deck of the Inter-

Expert Pat Jokajtys of Badwinsville will show gardeners the perfect companion plants to help produce beautiful garden tomatoes this season. pretive Center. Participants can make and take home their own live “salad bowl” garden. Pre-registration is available online at baltimorewoods.org. Trees, shrubs, annuals, herbs, vegetables, hanging baskets and a wide variety of perennials will be available for purchase throughout the weekend. This year’s plant selections will come from four local growers: Phoenix Flower Farm, Amanda’s Garden, Hillside Gardens, and Maple Hill Nursery. Baltimore Woods’ own staff and core garden volunteers will be available to help with plant selection and master garden-
ers from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Onondaga County will be on site to answer questions and offer gardening advice. In addition to plant expertise, customers can browse the vendor tables for nature-inspired gifts and peruse the silent auction table, enter a raffle, and purchase gently-used garden tools and accessories. Picnic plates will be served up by the garden café for $7. The plant sale will wrap up on Sunday with a “plants-only” sale day, allowing customers to focus all their attention on finding beautiful, healthy plants for their gardens.

Bacon, bourbon and the blues! Brooklyn blues belter to headline festival Sunday
B
May 31, 2017 l B9
By Russ Tarby
rooklyn-born blues belter Alexis P. Suter has one of the most distinctive voices in the business. Often described as a deep baritone, the lady’s instrument rumbles like a subway train and raises itself to the skyscrapers. Its round sound pulls listeners in while its pure power sends the lyrics into their souls. The blues industry recognizes Suter’s unique talent. In 2015, Suter was nominated in the Koko Taylor Award category at the Blues Music Awards (formerly W.C. Handy Awards). This year she was up for Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist, but lost out to Susan Tedeschi on May 11. The Alexis P. Suter Band will appear at the Bacon and Bourbon Festival, on Sunday, June 4, at The Ridge Golf Club & Tavern, 1281 Salt Springs Road, in Chittenango; $25/advance, $35/door; 315-687-6900; theRidgeRocks.com. Music starts shortly after 1 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Sunday’s bill showcases plenty of homegrown talent such as the Jamie Notarthomas Band, BrownSkin, Tas Cru & His Tortured Souls, The Ripcords and guitarist-singer Colin Aberdeen. The Bacon and Bourbon Fest is an annual benefit for Clear Path for Veterans; clearnpathforvets.com. Alexis P. Suter. Her middle initial could stand for Passion-
ate, but, in fact, it stands for Porterfield – her maternal grandmother’s maiden name. Family tradition plays a big part in Suter’s story. Her mom, Carrie Rice Suter who’s now in her 90s, sang professionally with such artists as gospel icons Thomas Dorsey and Mahalia Jackson and pop performers like Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Harry Belafonte.
“Oh, yeah,” Alexis exclaims over the phone. “She sang before the queen once in India. My sisters sang, too.” While Suter has recorded seven CDs with the APSB, she’s also promoting a new project, Alexis P. Suter’s Ministers of Sound. The septet’s disc, “Live from Briggs Farm Blues Festival,” features tracks such as the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ “Wade in the Water” and The Beatles’ “Let it Be.” Suter says the Ministers of Sound bring some balance to her performing career. “It gives me a chance to do some Americana, even bluegrass,” She said. “I can tell stories and make magical music.” After all, the 54-year-old singer recalls the 1975 song “Horse with No Name” by America as one of her all-time favorites. In those days, she also listened to plenty of Three Dog Night and Creedence Clearwater Revival. “I love the blues, don’t get me wrong,” she said. “I love the blues, but I love all music and I want to reach people all over. I’ll never be rock star or a pop star, but I do know good music, and the younger generation is on board with it. They sample all the music I grew up with.” On Sunday, Suter will gladly return to her blues base, playing tunes from the APSB’s new CD, “All for Loving You.” The band showcases the eminent instrumental prowess of guitarist Jimmy Bennett and his brother, bassist Peter Bennett. Ray Grappone plays drums, and Vicki Bell adds backing vocals. But it’s Alexis P. Suter’s distinctively low lead vocals that take center stage. “Having this voice sometimes really alienates me, and sometimes really elevates me,” she said. “But I never let it stop me being the love I’m supposed to be. I’m different. I’m like a dimple, a pretty wrinkle.”

Tips for avoiding ticks, tick-related diseases By Gerry Edwards, MD
This year is expected to be a bad tick season. Central New York is an area that is expected to see an increase in tick-related diseases. Ticks are most active during the spring, summer and early fall. Lyme disease has become known to most of us in the Northeast but there are other illnesses that are also transmitted by ticks. Growing awareness of Powassan virus has people understandably concerned. The virus, thus far, is rare and is transmitted by deer ticks that latch on a human host for a relatively short time (although 15 minutes is often cited, the time of transmission is not known and likely longer.) In its severe form, Powassan virus can cause neurological problems including encephalitis and even death. Most people, however, get a milder illness. To put it in perspective, there have only been about 75 cases of Powassan virus reported in the United States over the past 10 years, though most cases occurred in the Northeast and Great Lakes region, according to the CDC, and only about 16 were noted in New York during those 10 years. The best way to deal with the transmissions and the diseases caused by ticks is still prevention. The Centers for Disease Control recommends: Avoiding wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. Walking in the center of trails. Using repellent that contains 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin or IR3535 on exposed skin for protection that lasts several hours. Always follow product instructions. Parents should apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes and mouth. Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5 percent permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pre-treated clothing is available and may be protective longer. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an online tool to help you select the repellant that is best for you and your family: epa.gov/insect-repellents/find-insect-repellent-rigt-you. Bathing or showering as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you. Conducting a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. Parents should check their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between

the legs, around the waist, and especially in their hair. Examining gear and pets. Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats and day packs. Drying clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on dry clothing after you come indoors. If the clothes are damp, additional time may be needed. If the clothes require washing first, hot water is recommended. Cold and medium temperature water will not kill ticks effectively. If the clothes cannot be washed in hot water, tumble dry on low heat for 90 minutes or high heat for 60 minutes. The clothes should be warm and completely dry. Being outside is a good thing. If you or your kids are going to be in the woods or areas of high grass, brush or leaf clutter or just gardening for any length of time, wear light-colored clothing, long pants and sleeves when able and closed toe shoes. Yes, you can even tuck your pants into socks or wear high rubber boots. Ticks usually crawl up the lower extremities so using insect repellants on clothes and skin is protective. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends DEET for children over 2 months, though it should be limited to small areas of exposed skin. Many parents are wary of it but it has been shown to be safe and effective on skin and can be used wisely. It can damage some clothing if applied directly, however. Oil of lemon eucalyptus can be used for greater than 3 years of age. As noted above, Permethrin sprays can be used as repellents on clothing and footwear. Prompt removal of ticks is also preventive. Products such as “Tick Twisters” help in easy removal and online videos explain them. Otherwise use tweezers or protected fingers (cloth or glove), getting as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up with firm gentle pressure (don’t jerk or twist). The aim is not to crush or squeeze the body of the tick, as that can release infectious agents. Then wash the area of the bite as well as hands. If sections of the mouthparts of the tick remain in the skin, they should be left alone as they will normally be expelled spontaneously. The bite area should be monitored for secondary infection. As our climate is warming, we will likely be exposed to more ticks and insects so learning to prevent disease needs to be a part of everyone’s daily routine. Gerry Edwards, MD, is director of St. Joseph’s Physicians Family Medicine, faculty, Family Medicine Residency, St Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and an assistant professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

ARISE & Ride for Ramps set for Saturday ARISE & Ride for Ramps will be held Saturday, June 3, at Lighthouse Lanes in the City of Oswego. The tickets are $2 a piece or six for $10. The features a 5K walk/run, motorcycle ride, music and great food. The day will start at 9:30 a.m. with a 5K run/walk around Oswego Speedway, then the motorcycles will depart at 10 a.m. for a ride through the north country with some of the most beautiful views Oswego County has to offer. A barbecue will be held starting at 11 a.m. at Lighthouse Lanes. There will be a
choice of pulled pork or BBQ chicken. There will also be a drive-up service later in the day for those attending the races that evening. Tickets for just the BBQ are available. Funds raised through the event will be used for people in Oswego County who cannot afford a ramp or home accessibility modifications. Your support for this event makes it possible for people to remain at home and not be forced into a nursing home. It also means that people can come home from rehab or the hospital in a much quicker
time frame. ARISE & Ride for Ramps allows people with disabilities to return to their community and feel hopeful once again as they rejoin their families to live in dignity. For more information or to register visit rideforramps.org. Murdock’s Bicycles and Sports in Oswego has donated a Soda Pop Kids Bike to ARISE in support of their annual ARISE & Ride for Ramps event! ARISE is selling raffles tickets for the bike and will draw a winner at the event. Submitted photo

Cnyspca pet of the week
Dulche needs a home
“La Dolce Vita” means “the sweet life,” and that’s what our Dulche is waiting for! Dulche is seven years old and gets along well with other cats. This handsome guy came to the shelter when his owner became ill and was unable to take care of him. Dulche would make a “purrfect” companion for any home. He knows that his “furever” family is out there, somewhere, and he’s hoping they find him soon. Come meet Dulche for yourself and see how sweet this special guy is! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479. Submitted photo
