Trick-or-treat with the animals Treats, games, dance party featured at annual Zoo Boo
T
he Rosamond Gifford Zoo will transform into a Halloween haunt where children can trick-or-treat with the animals at its annual Zoo Boo days the last two weekends of October. This popular event offers a pre-Halloween party atmosphere with treat stations throughout the zoo, zookeeper demonstrations and animal encounters with some of the zoo’s creepier creatures, as well as ghostly games and a Monster Mash dance party, among other hauntingly hilarious activities in the spirit of the season. Zoo Boo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 21, 22, 28 and 29, rain or shine. The cost is $8 per child in addition to zoo admission (which is free to zoo members). Children - and their accompanying adults – are encouraged to wear their costumes and bring treat bags, or purchase a reusable Halloween treat bag for $1 each at the zoo. Rosamond Gifford Zoo members may buy advance-sale tickets for Zoo Boo good for any of the four days at rosamondgiffordzoo.org/zoo-boo. The general public can buy tickets at the door the day of the Zoo Boo events. More information at rosamondgiffordzoo.org.

Jon Garland to receive Ovation Award
On Thursday evening, Oct. 26, the Syracuse Sounds of Music Association will present the annual Ovation Award to Jon Garland for taking the lead in the reorganization of Symphoria, and his dedication and commitment to the Central New York music community. The awards dinner and silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Genesee Grande Hotel, 1600 E. Genesee Street, Syracuse. There will be musical entertainment by the David Solazzo Duo and the Syracuse Pops Chorus. Garland is the third and assistant principal horn with Symphoria. He initially joined the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra
in 1997. A native of Idaho, Garland initially studied the piano, but developed an interest in the horn during high school and began studies with Lawrence Johnson in Portland Oregon. Garland attended the Julliard School, the Mannes College of Music, as well as the Aspen Music Festival, where he was a fellowship recipient. His major teachers included Philip Myers, Ranier DeIntinis and John Cerminaro. In addition to performing in Syracuse, Garland has performed with the Honolulu Symphony, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic and many other orchestras
and festivals. In addition to performing, Garland has taught at Syracuse University’s Setnor School of Music since 2002 and Hamilton College since 2007. Garland has been active in service to professional musicians in Syracuse and Central New York, serving as the Syracuse Symphony’s delegate to the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians for a number of years, and as treasurer for the Professional Musicians of Central New York. He currently serves on the Symphoria Board of Directors. For more information and reservations visit syracusesoundsofmusic.org. Jon Garland

This weekend the Crunch face off against Binghamton, Springfield By Russ Tarby
A
fter losing its first two games of the season, the Syracuse Crunch continues its 201718 American Hockey League campaign with home games this weekend against the Binghamton Devils and the Springfield Thunderbirds. Under the guidance of second-year coach Ben Groulx, the Crunch face off against the Devils at 7 p.m. Friday. Oct. 20, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena, and host Springfield here at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. The Crumnch is the top farm club of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. The Binghamton Devils, affiliated with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, are coached by former Trenton Titan’ winger Rich Kowalsky. The Springfield Thunderbirds, the top farm club of the Florida Panthers, are coached by former Atlanta Thrashers blueliner Geordie Kinnear. Former Crunch defenseman Mathieu Brodeur now skates for Springfield. The Crunch hope to repeat as the AHL’s North Division champions this season after posting a 38-24 won-loss record last year before losing to the Grand Rap-
ids Griffins in the final round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Earlier this month, however, Syracuse dropped its first two games of the season to the Rochester Amerks. The Crunch lost 3-1 in the Flower City on Oct. 6 and then fell 3-2 in overtime at the home opener here Oct. 7. Twenty-year-old center Mitchell Stephens scored Syracuse’s lone goal in Rochester while veteran centers Cory Conacher and Kevin Lynch netted goals at the War Memorial. Single-game tickets cost $16, $18 and $20, increasing to $19, $21 and $23 on day of game. Tickets for children 12 and younger cost $16 and go to $19 on day of game; 315-473-4444; syracusecrunch.com.
Games on radio
All Crunch games are broadcast by ESPN Radio 97.7 FM, with play-by-play by Lukas Favale who also hosts “The Shootout Show” live at the War Memorial Arena following home games. Favale will also host the one-hour “Crunch Weekly” show at Tully’s Good Times on select Thursday nights throughout the season. In Syracuse, tune to 1200 AM or 97.7 FM and northwest of the city, dial in to 1440 AM or 100.1 FM.

ARISE seeks volunteers for Ombudsman program Have you ever spent time in a nursing home? Perhaps you were there for rehab or perhaps you have a loved one who lived in one. If so, you know that they can be difficult to get used to. Nobody wants to go to a nursing home, right? Sometimes however, it’s the only viable option. Did you know there is a volunteer program designed to help insure residents of nursing homes have the best quality of life possible? It’s called the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. ARISE oversees this program in Onondaga, Cortland, Oswego and Cayuga counties, and relies on the efforts of Ombudsman volunteers. ARISE is seeking volunteers who want to be part of this enriching effort and is offering a free training course. The purpose of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is to protect the health, safety, welfare and civil rights of people living in nursing homes and adult care facilities. Certified Ombudsmen in the program are trained and certified volunteers who advocate for residents’ rights and ensure that their complaints are resolved to support a higher quality of life. Those who have experienced the program as a volunteer have wonderful things to say about it. Judy Fox, an Ombudsman in Cayuga County, has said, “The best thing I can do for someone is to give them my time and my patience.” As an ombudsman, you will have

the opportunity to regularly visit a local nursing home or other adult care facility to advocate for residents and help ensure they are receiving quality, person-centered care. Long-Term Care Ombudsmen must complete a free training course to become certified. This course will give them all of the tools they need to be able to advocate for the residents properly. ARISE will offer the free Ombudsman training course for interested volunteers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct 26, 30, and 31 and Nov. 2 . The training will be hosted by Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman Coordinator Jeffrey Parker. People interested in learning more about this program or the training should contact Parker at 315-671-5108 or jparker@ ariseinc.org.

Three more pending American records highlight Festival of Races
On Sunday morning, Oct, 1, the 25th annual Syracuse Festival of Races (SFoR) continued its long tradition of road racing excellence, hosting three more pending 5K American age-group records and another of the largest and highest quality USATF Masters LDR Championship fields in history. With the SFoR’s Men’s 5K and MVP Health Care Women’s 5K hosting the USATF Masters (40-plus) 5 km Championships for both men and women for the tenth consecutive year, Sunday morning’s 5K finishers outside Syracuse University’s Manley Field House included runners age 7 through age 95 from 30 states, Canada, and Ireland. By 10:25 that morning, the SFoR’s nationally renowned 5K course on Meadowbrook Drive had hosted three more pending national records. The first of those belongs to the morning’s first finisher, Kevin Castille, 45, of LaFayette, LA, whose time of 14:29 improves by 16 seconds the men’s 45-49 5K American record of 14:45 set by Dennis Simonaitis in 2011. Castille’s time age-grades at 98.12 percent, the highest age-graded men’s performance of the morning. About 25 minutes later, Roy Englert, 95, of Springfield, VA, crossed the line in a net time of 40:40, more than eight minutes faster than Marion McAnelly’s listed 5K American record of 48:55 for the age group. When he crossed the Syracuse Festival of Races finish line, Englert became the oldest person ever to finish a road race in Upstate New York. The third American-record-breaking performance of the morning belongs to the Anny Stockman, 85, of Rensselaer, N.Y. Stockman’s net time of 39:41 improves upon Ruth Rothfarb’s longstanding women’s 85-89 5K American record of 43:00 by more than three minutes. According to Association of Road Racing Statisticians (arrs.net) performance lists, both Kevin Castille’s and Roy Englert’s performances are all-time 5K world bests for their respective age groups. In addition to the three pending American records, the Masters Championship fields at this year’s SFoR included 22 world-class (90plus percent on the current age-grading tables)—the seventh time in the past nine years that SFoR results have included 22 or more worldclass performances. The top age-graded performance of the morning (99.07 percent) belongs to Sabra Harvey, 68, of Houston, TX, who ran 20:44. The overall winner of the MVP Health Care Women’s 5K was Laurel Leone, 32, of Minoa, in a time of 17:22. Leone also won the event in 2015. The first-overall female finisher in the USATF Masters 5 km Championship was Syracuse’s Sascha Scott, in 17:50. Complete results of this year’s races as well as all prior editions of the Syracuse Festival of Races can be found at festivalofraces.com/history.html.

Central New York non-profits awarded grants
G
rants focused on improving economic mobility will be distributed by Bank of America to nonprofits working to increase access to basic needs, as well as workforce development and education opportunities in Central New York. The nonprofits receiving funding, such as Food Bank of Central New York and Junior Achievement of Central Upstate New York, are connecting youth to first-time jobs, giving young adults alternative pathways to employment and providing second chances to individuals with barriers to help them rebuild careers and lives. Finding a well-paying job continues to be a challenge in the Central New York area, where unem-
ployment rates are higher than the national average. Grants from Bank of America will help local nonprofits address this issue through programs that encourage the development of a diverse workforce, providing skilled workers to organizations while creating economic opportunity. Additionally, funding will help individuals and families in Syracuse chart a path toward greater economic mobility through access to food, shelter, benefits and other fundamental needs. On Point for College will use the funding to support its On Point for Jobs program, which helps bridge the gap between graduating college and starting a career. The program focuses on providing targeted resourc-
es and advisement to first-generation college students, graduates and college stop-outs who often lack the professional connections and knowledge to find gainful employment. “Because of the support of Bank of America, we have been able to help more than 7,000 students enroll in college, resulting in billions in increased taxable income in our community and New York State,” said Samuel Rowser, executive director, On Point for College. Organizations receiving grants include: · Catholic Charities of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse · Food Bank of Central New York · Junior Achievement of Central Upstate New York
· On Point for College · Onondaga Community College Foundation · Rescue Mission Alliance of Syracuse · The Upstate Foundation · United Way of Central New York The grants are part of nearly $43 million in grants the Bank of America Charitable Foundation is providing across the country to advance economic mobility through workforce development and basic needs. These grants are part of the company’s commitment to responsible growth as it works to improve the financial lives of individuals and families. Philanthropic and volunteer investments play a key role in this effort to build thriving communities.
OCRRA director of recycling and waste reduction honored Radin receives Thoughtful Motivator Award
The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI), a national, nonprofit committed to reducing the health, safety and environmental impacts of consumer products across their lifecycle, presented Andrew Radin, OCRRA’s Director of Recycling and Waste Reduction with the 2017 Thoughtful Motivator award at their annual conference in Boston on July 25. “As Chair of the New York Product Stewardship Council and a member of PSI’s Board of Directors, Andrew makes a consistent impact on environmental policy through his thoughtfulness, tact and positive personality. He has spearheaded efforts to build support for numerous extended producer responsibility bills in New York, including for paint, electronics, pharmaceuticals and batteries,” said Scott Cassel, chief executive officer and founder of PSI. “Andrew also played a key role in New York State’s textile recovery efforts through the Re-Clothe NY Coalition, for which he helped facilitate landmark standards
Andrew Radin that establish common messaging and ensure the best possible use of donated textiles.”
“Andrew has helped build a world-class recycling system in Onondaga County, inspiring the best resource recovery solution from aluminum cans to zucchini peels,” said Dereth Glance, OCRRA executive director. “Andrew empowers others and advocates effectively to advance sustainable material management locally, statewide and in the nation. We are proud to work with him.” About OCRRA: OCRRA is a not-for-profit public benefit corporation created by the New York State Legislature in 1990 to deliver a comprehensive solid waste management and resource recovery system to Onondaga County residents. OCRRA’s system includes: a strong recycling and composting program, a foundation for local waste disposal at the Waste-to-Energy Facility, two convenient trash and recycling drop off sites, a robust education component and programs for hard to manage materials, such as household hazardous waste, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and other mercury-containing devices. OCRRA’s award-winning programs are
funded by trash drop-off fees and the sale of electricity generated at the Waste-to-Energy Facility in Jamesville, NY. Learn more and get involved at www.OCRRA.org, or follow us on Facebook. About the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI): PSI is a national, membership-based nonprofit committed to reducing the health, safety, and environmental impacts of consumer products across their lifecycle with a strong focus on sustainable end-of-life management. Headquartered in Boston, Mass., PSI takes a unique product stewardship approach to solving waste management problems by encouraging product design changes and mediating stakeholder dialogues. With 47 state environmental agency members, along with hundreds of local government members from coast-to-coast, and 110 corporate, business, academic, non-U.S. government, and organizational partners, we work to design, implement, evaluate, strengthen, and promote both legislative and voluntary product stewardship initiatives across North America. Retired General David H. Petraeus to Visit Colgate Event is free and open to the public
General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, retired) will visit campus to speak with students and the local community during Colgate’s Family Weekend, Saturday, October 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Colgate Memorial Chapel. Petraeus will give a speech titled “National Security and U.S. Foreign Policy: Strategic Challenges in Today’s World,” and will then take questions from the audience. Robert Kraynak, political science professor and director of Colgate’s Center for Freedom and Western Civilization, said he expects Petraeus’ talk will touch on the future of NATO, the ongoing nuclear standoff with North Korea, and a host of other issues related to the future of U.S. diplomacy with China and Russia.
One of the most prominent U.S. military figures of the post-9/11 era, Petraeus served for 37 years in the United States Army and is widely recognized for his leadership of the Surge in Iraq, which is credited for reducing violence in the country by more than 85 percent. A graduate with distinction from the United States Military Academy, Petraeus is the only person in U.S. Army history to be the top graduate in both the U.S. Army’s challenging Ranger School and the year-long U.S. Army Command and General Staff College course. He earned his PhD in international relations and economics from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and later completed a fellowship at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Petraeus is a recipient of numerous U.S. Military, State Department, NATO, and United Nations medals,
including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Combat Action Badge, the Ranger Tab, and the Master Parachutist Wings. In recent years, his writing has been published in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and has been a frequent contributor to TV news programs and documentaries. The general’s visit is sponsored by the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization, which has been responsible for bringing other high-caliber speakers to campus including: former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former U.S. Representative and presidential candidate Ron Paul and journalist Juan Williams. Petraeus’ visit is part of a full slate of family weekend events. This event is open to the public and is first come first served.Additional details about events and gatherings during family weekend will be updated colgate.edu.

Cnyspca pet of the week
Meet madonna
By Donna Newman Our Madonna can’t sing, but she is very vocal! She’s not a “Material Girl,” just a special needs kitty who’s looking for love! Madonna’s blind in one eye, but this loving cat will always see the best in you. Now’s a great time to adopt; the adoption fee is waived for adult cats until Oct. 25. So if you’re on the “Borderline” about adopting, now’s the time to get “Into the Groove” and “Open Your Heart” to a loving companion! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org and call 315-454-4479.
