Honor Flight Syracuse to benefit from June 9 race Honor Flight Syracuse will be front and center on Tuesday, June 9, as the beneficiary for the 33rd running of the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in Syracuse. Honor Flight Syracuse has embarked on an ambitious mission to transport veterans from World War II and beyond to Washington, DC at no cost to them, to visit the memorials dedicated to their honor and sacrifice. The current focus is veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and any veteran from any conflict with a terminal illness. The fifth and most recent mission was held April 25, and transported 81 veterans - average age 91 - to our nation’s capital. “Nationally, over 100,000 veterans have traveled to Washington, DC by one of 137 Honor Flight networks in the US,” said John Paddock, RADM, USN (Ret), vice president of the board for Honor Flight Syracuse. “We are dedicated to giving our veterans the honor they have so earned. This organization is entirely volunteer driven so we can provide the veterans a completely free trip to visit the memorials, and share memories with other veterans. We can provide this experience thanks to the support of the Central NY community and we are so appreciative of J.P. Morgan Chase for the opportunity to benefit from the Corporate Challenge.” Mission 6 is set for Oct. 3, 2015. Veterans travel from Syracuse Airport on a chartered flight to Washington, DC. A police escort allows the four buses to travel easily from the World War II memorial, to the Korean and Vietnam Memorials, past the Iwo Jima Memorial and onto a special seating at Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guards. Veterans return to hundreds of family and friends welcoming them home to Syracuse Airport.

Columbus ships ‘Pinta’ and ‘Nina’ to land in Oswego
thenina.com
On Wednesday, June 10, the “Pinta” and the “Nina,” replicas of Columbus’ Ships, will open in Oswego. The ships will be docked at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum, 1 West First Street, until their departure early Monday morning, June 15. The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The “Pinta” was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century. Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced “sailing museum” for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the caravel, a Portuguese ship used
by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8 for adults, $ 7 for seniors and $6 for students 5 - 16. Children 4 and under are free. The ships are open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations necessary. Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30minute guided tour with a crew member should call (787)672-2152 or email columfnd1492@ gmail.com . Minimum of 15; $5 per person, with no maximum.. Visit ninapinta.org. The ships arrive on Tuesday, June 9, and there will be a private viewing of the ships for the media after docking.

Chiefs rookie pitcher goes deep
Emergency starter Paolo Espino swatted a rare homer to beat the Indy Indians By Russ Tarby During the second half of May, the Syracuse Chiefs lost 10 games in frustrating fashion – dropping many by a single run – over an 11-game stretch from May 16 to 27. The sole victory during that skid was especially exciting. Called up from Double-A Harrisburg Senators to make an emergency start on Sunday, May 24, Panama-born pitcher Paolo Espino thrilled the crowd at NBT Bank Stadium by pitching seven scoreless innings and by hitting a three-run home run to beat the Indianapolis Indians, 5-3. How rare is it for a Chiefs pitcher to go deep? Well, they only come up to bat when they’re on a team affiliated with a National league parent club and they’re opposing another National League affiliate. Otherwise a designated hitter fills in at the plate. Syracuse is the top farm club of the Washington Nationals and the Indy Indians are affiliated with the NL’s Pittsburgh Pirates. How rare is it for a Chiefs pitcher to go deep? Well, the last time it happened was on June 8, 2012, when Chiefs righty Mitch Atkins slugged a solo shot leading off the third inning against the Louisville Bats, top farmhands of the Cincinnati Reds. Atkins’ homer, his only hit in three at-bats that day, lifted his batting average to an unspectacular .143. The Chiefs won, 7-3, and Atkins earned his fifth win of the season. Atkins’ four-bagger made him the first Chiefs hurler to homer in 37 years, according to Chiefs broadcaster Kevin Brown. Back in 1975 Chiefs right-hander Ed Ricks hit a homer for the Syracuse squad managed by Bobby Cox. On May 24, Espino joined the ranks of Syracuse’s slugging pitchers. With the Chiefs ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth and with two already out, Chiefs catcher Dan Butler tripled to left-center and second baseman Cutter Dykstra was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners. Espino stepped into the right-handed batter’s box to face Indians starter Clayton Richard. On a 2-2 count, Espino swung at a fastball sending it over the right-field wall for a
three-run dinger, his first professional home run, putting the Chiefs up 4-0. “I knew the team was in a losing streak, so I was trying to go out there and do my best and give the team a chance to win,” Espino said after the game. “With the home run, I couldn’t believe it when I was running around first base, that’s when I saw that it went out. I was so excited running around the base.” The last time he’d hit one out was a decade ago at The Pendleton School, a sports-oriented prep school in Bradenton, Fla. With eight seasons of pro ball on his resume, Espino was struggling on the mound in Harrisburg where he was 0-3 after starting seven games. But he was hitting .500, going 4-for-8. So his win in Syracuse was his first pitching victory of 2015. On Monday, May 25, Espino was sent back to Harrisburg, but here’s hoping will get to see his arm and his bat back in Syracuse sometime this summer.
Chiefs chatter
● Espino was filling in for Chiefs pitcher Taylor Jordan who was promoted May 24 to the Washington Nationals. ● That same day, Hawaiian slugger Kila Ka’aihue left the Chiefs after he was released by Washington. ● The first Syracuse pitcher ever to hit a home run was Henry McCormick who smacked a first-inning round-tripper for the Syracuse Stars against the Boston Red Stockings at Newell Park on July 26, 1879. According to Chiefs historian Ron Gersbacher, that feat also made McCormick the first pitcher in National League history to win a 1-0 game with his own first-inning home run. It was the only home run McCormick ever hit in his four-years as a professional.
Upcoming home games
The Louisville Bats, top farm club of the Cincinnati Reds, start swinging in Syracuse at 7:05 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 1 and 2, and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders roll in for a two-game set at 7:05 p.m. June 4 and 5.

No election can be held without election inspectors; they are the front line in protecting and preserving free and fair elections. New York State Election Law requires that a bipartisan team of four inspectors, two Republicans and two Democrats, staff
every polling place. The board needs people to serve as permanent inspectors, as well as to serve as substitutes for when personal emergencies prevent an inspector from going to their assigned polling station. To qualify to be an election inspector, a person must be a registered voter, be able to serve anywhere in the County and be enrolled in either the Democratic or Re-
publican parties. Inspectors are required to work the entire day on Primary Day (date to be announced) and/or General Election Day (Nov. 3, 2015). Starting pay for the general election will be set at $190 and paid by the county. If appointed to serve as an election inspector, the person will receive training. Inspectors are paid for their attendance at

Newhouse School of
training sessions, in addition to the pay they receive for working on Election Day. Anyone interested in serving as an election inspector or in learning more about this very important election job should visit ongov.net or contact the Inspector Department of the Board of Elections at 435-3331.

Museum plans fishing, camping events The Salmon River International Sport Fishing Museum will host a “Fishing and Camping Show and Sale” Saturday, June 6, and a “Celebrate Fishing Show and Sale” Saturday, June 13. Vendors, volunteers and people interested in all aspects of fishing are welcome to participate in both events. Both shows run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Located at 3044 state Route 13, east of the village of Pulaski, the museum and visitor center is located on 10 acres of land with a pond and fishing access to the Salmon River. “We are looking for vendors and individuals who would like to participate in either or both events,” said Museum Director Mike Riordan. Riordan said the June 6 show will focus on vintage tackle, campers, boats, canoes and related items. People are invited to display and sell any items related to fishing and camping. Volunteers are invited to present seminars on specific equipment manufacturers or other topics, and help with a discovery auction.
At the June 13 event, volunteers are invited to display or demonstrate the latest fishing tackle, present seminars on specific fishing skills or techniques, teach children how to cast, spool a reel, tie a fisherman’s knot and other skills, help with kids’ fishing seminars, and demonstrate fly-tying, casting, equipment, taxidermy or related topics. People are welcome to rent space to sell or display their items under the museum’s vendor tent or rent tent space at both events. Prices are $30 for a 10- by 10-foot space, and $50 for two spaces. For those providing their own tents, the cost of a 10- by-10-foot space is $20. The museum is accepting donated items for raffles and a silent auction. Snacks and beverages will be available on the site. Tent space is limited for both events. To reserve a spot, make checks payable to Salmon River International Sport Fishing Museum and mail to 3044 State Route 13, Pulaski, 13142. During today’s event, Vernon Downs and Gural presented a check for $51,810 to the Food Bank of Central New York from the proceeds raised from last year’s Love and Theft and Jerrod Neiman shows. Gural pledged to donate all proceeds again this year from its Sara Evans show, to be held at 8 p.m. on July 3.
