Syracuse Chiefs lose two in one day By Russ Tarby
Rehabbing LHP Felipe Rivero got tagged with the loss after throwing a sloppy seventh in which he allowed the game-winning hit, an RBI double by Lehigh’s Tyler Henson. The Syracuse ballclub is the top farm team of the Washington Nationals, while Lehigh Valley is affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Chiefs chatter
✓ The Chiefs’ starting rotation seems to be settling down this month. When right-handed Bruce Billings allowed four runs in his May 17 start in Charlotte, it was just the second time this month in which a Chiefs starter allowed more than three runs. Overall the starters have posted a 3.05 earnedrun average in May. ✓ The Chiefs remain in last in the league in attendance – averaging 2,586 fans per game – but General Manager Jason Smorol looks on the bright side. “In April we were 30 percent above our 2014 attendance figures,” he said. “For me, those are the numbers that count, the numbers that show how we compare to our own previous performances.”
✓ After a rough month of April in which they won 7 and lost 14, as of May 19 the Chiefs’ monthly W-L record stood at 9-8. For the season, the Chiefs 16-23 record left them in fifth place in the International League North Division. Last year the Chiefs finished first.
Upcoming home games
The Durham Bulls stampede into NBT Bank Stadium for a three-game set at 7:05 p.m. Friday May 29 (followed by fireworks), 6:35 p.m. Saturday, May 30, and 5:35 p.m. Sunday, May 31. The Louisville Bats, top farm club of the Cincinnati Reds, start swinging in Syracuse at 7:05 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 1 and 2, and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders roll in for a two-game set at 7:05 p.m. June 4 and 5. Ticket prices range from $4 to $12, and parking costs $5; syracusechiefs.com; 4747833.
Russ Tarby can be contacted at russtarby@ aol. com.

The Syracuse Chiefs played a weird kind of double-header on Tuesday, May 19, as they finished up the 1-1 game that had been suspended due to a downpour in the 10th inning the night before at NBT Bank Stadium on the city’s North Side. On a hot and humid Monday night, Syracuse starter Taylor Jordan pitched a solid nine innings but manager Billy Gardner Jr. tapped closer Evan Meek to throw the 10th before umpire Jeff Gosney called for the tarps. After allowing a first-inning run, Jordan settled down over the next seven innings to limit Lehigh Valley to only one run on five hits. Between the third and sixth innings, Jordan retired 12 IronPigs in a row. With his high-quality start on May 18, Jordan actually improved on his already enviable 1.89 earned-run average which he brought into the game. InthebottomofthefourthfacingIronPigsstarter Phillippe Aumont, the Chiefs’ Hawaiian homer hitter, Kila Ka’aihue, drove the ball out of the park just in-
sidetheright-fieldfoulpoletosquarethescoreatone. Heavy rain began pelting the field in the bottom of the ninth, and just before Evan Meek threw his first pitch of the 10th at 10 p.m., Gosney ordered a rain delay. When the sun shone again on Tuesday at 5:05, the game was decided after Meek took the hill for the home team and allowed an RBI single to IronPigs veteran Russ Canzler driving in Cord Phelps who’d led off the inning with a base hit. The Chiefs went down in order in the bottom of the 10th as reliever Cesar Jimenez notched his second save of the season. Nitecap rally falls short Fifty minutes later, the Chiefs faced the IronPigs for Tuesday’s regularly scheduled game at 7:05 p.m. as Syracuse’s winningest starter, RHP Taylor Hill (3-1), took the mound against Lehigh Valley lefty Adam Morgan. Hill allowed three runs in the third and one run in the fourth, but the Chiefs hitters rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
