Vintage vehicle mania
Classic cars, antique boats inspire collectors, draw crowds By Jason Gabak With Central New York’s winter weather, many collectors and restorers have their classic cars and boats safely stored away. But, when spring and summer come, the roads will be filled with shining, chromed vehicles and the waters will see classic craft from sailing vessels to motor craft enjoying Central New York’s waters.
The area will also host numerous special events from car shows to parades, where many of these vehicles will be on display. Rob O’Connor, event director of the Syracuse Nationals, said the annual car show is a huge draw to the Syracuse area, bringing in not only car owners but also those eager just to get a chance to take a look and maybe find the inspiration they need to

Music to CNY’s ears? Amphitheater could serve as economic engine for the western suburbs
Pictured is a projection of what the 17,500-seat amphitheater near Onondaga Lake would look like.
By Sarah Hall Come this fall, the western shore of Onondaga Lake will likely look very different. Onondaga County has approved construction of a $100 million, 17,500-seat amphitheater next to the lake. The county hopes the venue will draw tourism and entertainment to the area. But that’s not all it could draw. According to one of the state legislators who represents the area, the amphitheater could provide the impetus needed to bring jobs and businesses to Central New
York. “What we’re seeing are the first phases of making all of this land available and attractive to commercial and industrial users in the area,” said Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, who represents the 129th district. “We have a vision of what can be in that area. There’s a lot going on that’s creating a new feeling among the people that live there. Other people are starting to look at it and say, ‘What’s going on here?’” Magnarelli said the construction will help to change people’s
perceptions of the western suburbs. “We always hear about how you have to beware of Solvay and Geddes, how you have to be afraid of locating there because of all of the environmental hazards,” he said. “But I say, look at Onondaga Lake. It’s being cleaned up, no question about it. The very scientists who declared it the worst in the world are now coming back and saying it’s coming back. It’s getting cleaned… The county is continuing to do work around the lake. They’re See Amphitheater, page 10

Q:
How has lower gas prices affected your driving habits?
By Hayleigh Gowans For the past few months, gas prices across the United States have been falling — and that means a lot of people feel much better about going to the pump. According to AAA’s Daily Fuel
Craig Sheldon, New Jersey They have not. I tend to drive a lot going to do it regardless of prices.
Gauge Report, the national average of regular gasoline is $2.19 per gallon. In New York state, the price is slightly higher at $2.43 per gallon, but compared to the figure from one year ago at $3.63 per gallon, many New Yorkers are feeling a sense of relief with their wallets. The reason for lower gas prices, according to the Energy Information Administration, is that crude oil production in the United States has increased, and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has decided not to manipulate prices by restricting oil production. Lower gas prices are good news for many drivers, but does lowering gas prices cause drivers to changes their driving habits? Or is gas a product people will buy regardless of the price? Eagle Newspapers asked people “Has lower gas prices and I’m affected your driving habits?” Here are their responses:
Joe Cavallaro and Ann Marie Martucci, East Syracuse
Joe: I can say for myself probably no because I drive a lot anyways. I shuttle kids around, go back and forth to work. I don’t think I’m more inclined to drive just because gas is lower. Ann Marie: Same here. It’s nice now. I fill up my gas tank and it’s 20 bucks. It lasts a month because I only work a mile and a half from home. As soon as the weather breaks, I can start traveling back south again. So if prices stay the same, I’ll probably travel more in the spring and summer.
Jan Nellis, Canastota (left)
Chelsea Conway, Syracuse Ali Kolbert, New York City No, I don’t have a car. But it makes it easier for my parents to visit.
Not really because I drive a lot for work so I’d have to drive anyways. Except I do go to BJ’s to get my gas because I’m a member and it’s lower there. So I always try to go there.
No, but it’s really awesome. My mom and I work close to each other so we carpool and save gas that way, too.
Anonymous, Syracuse Not my driving habits. I work in Oswego, so I’m driving 40 miles for work each way and it saves me a lot of money. But I’m not driving any extra because of cheaper gas prices.
Alvina Mardhani-Bayne, Edmonton, Canada No, not really. I don’t really drive.
Laura Revette, Syracuse Yes. They have because it’s less money.
Michelle Michlovitch, East Syracuse
Jim and Candy Willhite, Manlius
Jim: No, we have certain places we need to go, and we go there. Candy: We don’t have to drive for work, we work from our house, so we weren’t really purchasing that much gas to begin with.
No, I just have no free time to do anything extra. I’m definitely enjoying them but I don’t think it’s going to last.

Par-K continues to grow with their improving Jeep and Chrysler lines Chrysler Group LLC continues to improve models and Par-K Chrysler-Jeep continues to make improvements to their dealership. “The biggest change has been the Jeep Cherokee,” said Tom Gilbo, general manager at Par-K. “The Jeep Cherokee is our biggest seller with its all-new design. A new nine-speed transmission, the only one in the world, makes this a special vehicle. It has replaced the Jeep Liberty, will get up to 30 miles per gallon and it’s a frontwheel drive. It competes with Subaru Forester, Honda CRV, Ford Escape and Toyota Rav 4. Our Jeep Cherokee has true offroad capabilities, three different four wheel drive systems to choose from, 10 airbags … why it even has an option to park itself!” “People loved the technology that they could get in the Jeep Grand Cherokee,” Gilbo said. “Now they can get the same technology in the moderately-sized Jeep Cherokee.” Not to be outdone — look what’s new with the Chrysler line. The Chrysler 200 is built on the Jeep Cherokee platform with ninespeed transmission and all wheel drive. And the very popular Chrysler Town and Country continues to be the “ultimate vehicle,” said Gilbo. “I think it’s the best vehicle on the road as far as performance,
economy, cargo area and luxury features.” It features DVD Navigation, heated power folding seats, great gas mileage, all power doors and more. It’s great in the snow, too. Yes, it’s a van … but it’s the ultimate vehicle. Drive one and you’ll see why. Par-K, much like the cars it sells, completed improvements recently. After an ice storm collapsed the roof on its body shop, Gilbo said the garage was rebuilt from the floor up. “It’s beautiful; everything is brand new and top of the line in the shop,” he added. “Butch Jackowski does an incredible job managing the shop. He does custom work and has multiple cars featured in magazines, and, of course, isthere for all the dents and dings and insurance work you may need.” New siding and new windows to the dealership were also completed last year. “We redid the outside and the inside,” said Gilbo. “It is more customer-friendly — more presentable. We want our customers to be comfortable — have some coffee or tea, watch television or use our Wi-Fi while in for service. It’s all about the customer.” “We’re happy to have Gloria Squires back as the Internet sales

On Thursday, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The Saturday hours are great for people who can’t get off work

CenterState CEO job training program making strides By Ashley M. Casey Syracuse-based economic development organization CenterState CEO is seeing results from the Work Train job training program it kicked off last summer. While the entry-level health care training program has already produced new jobs in Central New York, CenterState CEO is preparing to add an advanced manufacturing training component to the Work Train program, thanks to a $600,000 grant brought home by Assemblyman Al Stirpe. Dominic Robinson, CenterState CEO’s vice president of Community Prosperity and director of Work Train, said the Work Train idea was born out of a 2009 pilot program that matched employers with workers. In 2014, Work Train began a partnership with elder care service provider Loretto, which has resulted in 32 new full-time positions for certified nursing assistants (CNAs). According to Robinson, CenterState CEO helped Loretto create a detailed candidate profile and assessed about 200 potential employees through local social service and workforce agencies. “We worked with them to develop an inhouse state CNA certification program,” Robinson said.
From this pool of candidates, Loretto made 47 job offers. Thirty-two people accepted. Robinson said CenterState CEO hopes to forge similar partnerships with Syracuse’s major hospitals. CenterState CEO has taken a “dual client” approach with Work Train, aiming to serve the needs of both employers and underemployed Central New Yorkers. “It’s really about aligning certain employer needs with people’s interests and skills,” Robinson said. While many of Work Train’s clients are underemployed individuals from the inner city of Syracuse, Robinson said the programs are open to anyone who is looking for work. “We saw that there was a ton of people in our community that were sitting on the sidelines and were disconnected from the workforce,” he said. “People from disadvantaged backgrounds [can] go on to have pretty exciting success stories.” The training that will be available through Work Train is customizable. Robinson said CenterState CEO is developing the programs with the help of the Syracuse Educational Opportunity See Work Train, page 6

Upping the ante New casino in Chittenango could have big benefits for local economy By Jason Emerson

The Oneida Indian Nation, owner of Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, announced in December plans to expand its Upstate New York operations with a new $20 million, 67,000-squarefoot casino in the village of Chittenango. Many local residents supported or opposed the plan for a variety of reasons, but what about the economic impact this new casino will have on the immediate and surrounding area? According to many people, it will be a very positive one. “Our expansion with this new casino is yet another opportunity for the Oneida Nation to create more jobs for Central New Yorkers, to invest in our region’s economic growth and to improve and diversify our guest experience, said

A family business with deep roots in CNY Besides the generations of car buyers are the three generations of staff at Longley Dodge. Earl and Harold Longley began the business in 1947 strictly as an auto body shop. The family dealership was established in 1955 and the brothers added the Dodge line in 1964, making Longley the longest standing Dodge dealership in Oswego County. Earl’s son Dennis and Harold’s son Gene run the business now. Dennis’s son, Doug Longley, is in the process of learning the business and will eventually take over as owner when Dennis and Gene retire. “We’re a family organization,” said Longley. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially sine we’re in a small community. People like to come here and know they’re going to get good service.” And that service isn’t overbearing, Longley said. “Our sales staff doesn’t pressure you,” he said. “They’re not pushy. We don’t like to operate that way, because it doesn’t really serve the customer as well.” That’s why people keep coming back. “A lot of our business is repeat business,” Longley said. “People come back to us.”
And if there is a problem, people know they can go to the top to find a solution. “The buck stops at my desk,” Longley said. Dennis learned the business from the ground up. After graduating from Northward University’s Automotive Business School he worked in the body shop for 10 years. He joined the sales team in the late 1970s and served as sales manager from 1980 to 2000. He raced for 10 years and in 1989 won the ESTA Mod Championship at ESTA Drag Strip in his 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury. He has ridden HarleyDavidson motorcycles for years. Chris Atwater has been promoted to general sales manager, and Dennis’s son Doug is currently attending NADA dealer’s school and will be moving into the position of general manager and owner. Jack Montague is the used car manager. “He buys, sells and appraises used cars for us,” said Dennis. “You have to know used cars and trends and Jack stays on top of it for us.” Dodge’s new and improved 2014 models have been well received. “The new 2014 Dodge Dart is getting rave reviews — people really like it,” said Dennis.
Work Train Center, BOCES and the Syracuse City School District’s adult education programs. “We will often times take programs they have off the shelf and tweak them,” Robinson said. Work Train has been made possible through approximately $1 million in flex capital from the United Way of Central New York, the Allen Foundation, the Gifford Foundation and the Central New York Community Foundation. Last summer, Work Train received another funding opportunity: New York State Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-North Syracuse) helped CenterState CEO secure a $600,000 grant for advanced manufacturing training. “It bridges a gap between our local businesses and workforce,” Stirpe said of Work Train. “Too often we hear stories of our young adults having to leave Central New York to find good-paying jobs elsewhere. This funding will help prepare our workforce for the local high tech jobs that already exist here at home.
“Produced from 1960 to 1976, the Dodge Dart is back with three different engines and 160 horsepower. We have one in stock — and have already taken many orders. They’re built with 68 percent high-strength steel, 10 air bags standard, and it’s the only car in its class that offers blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection.” The Dodge Ram 1500 has had some major mechanical updates including a more powerful engine and improved air suspension plus voice control and upgraded electronics. Its improved fuel economy is “Best in Class.” Now there is also a V6 Diesel that is rated at 28 MPG highway. Longley Dodge, which has been on the web for more than 10 years, continues to grow. It is one of only a few dealers that have pictures and pricing online, with up to 25plus pictures of each vehicle. The dealership is on Facebook and Twitter, has launched its mobile website for smart devices and has one of the fastest response times of any dealership. Due to customer demand, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Longley Dodge is located at 1698 Route 57, just south of Fulton. They can be reached at 598-2135 or at longleydodge. com.
From page 4 … My hope is that this grant will help accelerate economic growth by connecting local people to local employers.” Robinson said the pre-apprenticeship manufacturing program for Work Train is still in its planning stages, but CenterState CEO is working with the Manufacturers Association of CNY (MACNY) to create partnerships with local businesses. His conservative estimate for participation in the manufacturing program is 75 to 150 people. “Manufacturing is a much trickier industry,” Robinson said. “There’s very few large anchoring employers than there used to be. … We’ll probably pilot a couple of programs this year and hope that we can really grow it in the second year.” CenterState CEO plans to help businesses with retention of new employees and will provide support to workers as they climb the career ladder. More details about the pre-apprenticeship program will be available in the coming months.

Oneida Nation Representative and Nation Enterprises CEO Ray Halbritter. “The Yellow Brick Road Casino will create numerous construction jobs for our local trade workers and more than 250 permanent positions once it opens. The casino, to be located in the unused portion of the Chittenango Tops plaza off Route 5, will feature more than 430 Vegas-style cash slot machines, a 500-seat bingo hall, two casual dining options, a country-western bar and a general store. The operation will pay homage to the community’s identity as the birthplace of L. Frank Baum, author of “Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and be open 24 hours a day. Yellow Brick Road Casino is projected to open in spring 2015. “I’m excited by the opportunities for growth that the casino presents. Clearly the creation of 250 jobs is a boost for the county but I’m also looking forward to the casino drawing even more visitors to Chittenango and Madison County, said Scott Flaherty, executive director of Madison County Tourism. No numbers have been released as far as the revenue or visitor streams expected to be generated by the casino, but, in addition to the construction jobs and dollars this will bring, many people see it as a sure thing that a gaming operation will bring new people and new businesses with it once it is completed. “I always welcome any kind of new enterprise to add to the economic stability by giving jobs and making sure Madison County is putting its best foot forward, said County Supervisor John Salka, chair of the Madison County Board of Supervisors Planning, Economic Development, Environmental and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee. “Regardless of who is running or owning it, [it’s] always good to see new enterprises come into Madison County; it’s always been a big goal of our committee and the county. Assemblyman Bill Magee, D-Nelson, who represents the 121st Assembly district which includes Chittenango, has said he has reservations about the new casino going in, particularly in that he feels it will compete against other local businesses. “I think it’s a big question — the economic impact on the area, Magee said. “Obviously it will probably attract some people into the area, but they’re talking about having two or three restaurants, that take away from the local restaurants there and lose the sales tax – we’re already losing the sales tax of the liquor store in there, that revenue normally would come to county and the state. In the end, the casino is expected to bring more people and more dollars to the area as well as new satellite businesses, such as has happened around Turning Stone Casino, but there is the possibility that local eateries could be negatively impacted or the casino may not turn out to be the popular boon that is boasted, Salka said. “There’s no doubt we can’t discount the possibility that some local businesses could be affected, but also it might bring more people into area who want more diversity and choice, he said. “It’s, again, a wait-and-see approach. There’s a possibility it can go either way. Kip Hicks, executive director for Madison County Industrial Development Agency, said he expects the casino to benefit both downtown businesses and surrounding restaurants and other retail stores. “I think it will have net-positive effect overall, Hicks said. “This will be the first casino for Madison County, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

George was killed in 1977 in a tragic automobile accident. Northside is now owned by President Scott Jones and CEO Gary Bell; they currently have five Central New York locations and over 125 employees. Four decades of success are attributed to treating every customer with honesty and integrity while producing a quality guaranteed repair. Our staff are all dedicated to being friendly, helpful and professional. Our training programs are second to none in our industry from front office, technicians and management. The focus is on providing a great experience for our valued customers Northside has direct repair relationships with most insurance companies. These relationships allow a streamlined approach to the repair process and customers are pleased with the process since the insurance company and Northside Collision are working together to provide a guaranteed repair and a favorable experience rather than an adversarial one, says Bell. Northside locations are I-Car Gold Class Certified, which means the company’s technicians have undergone extensive training and certifications in all phases of collision repair. Each facility uses the latest technology available for diagnostics and collision repair. They converted to water based, green, environmentally friendly paints from BASF in 2011, Bell said. Jones, who has been with the company for 28 years, said Northside has become the premier collision repair facility in Upstate New York. “If you take care of customers they keep coming back,” he said. Northside is now repairing vehicles for three generations in some families. Many customers that had their vehicles repaired in the 1970s when the company was started are still returning, as well as their children and grandchildren, for vehicle repairs. The Camillus location, built in 1999, has completed a significant renovation. A second “state of the art” spray booth has been installed and additional work bays were added Northside Collision offers loaner vehicles, and rentals on site. Summit Dodge has assembled a great team for the future Under the steady hand of Steve DiMarco and Lou Valerino III, Summit Dodge is well positioned and has assembled a great team for the future. The team includes Doug Jean, general manager, Bob Bauer, used car manager, Jason Bagozzi, service manager, Deann Shrank, body shop manager and Dean Evans, parts manager. “2014 was a good year,” said Lou Valerino III. “Chrysler Corporation is going in a positive direction. The Ram 1500 was Motor Trend Magazine’s 2014 Truck of the Year, making it two years in a row winning that distinction. The all new 2014 Dodge Dart got great reviews and there are more improvements to the Dodge line coming.”
Vintage take on their own classic car project. “Each year we have 80,000 to 90,000 people, depending on the weather,” O’Connor said. “Last year we had cars from 34 different states and six Canadian provinces. Our show draws a lot of people. Some of it is the chance to be around like-minded people and have the chance to talk about cars. Some of it is just the chance to see these cars.” Jack Gifford of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Show said there is s similar connection to boats. He said collectors enjoy coming together to share their work and see what others are doing. “It is a labor of love,” Gifford said. “It is probably the same for cars and other things, not just boats, but part of the fun is like model railroads, part of the fun is putting it all together in the first place. These boats are works of art. People really enjoy putting in the time restoring them, but it is also a lot fun to get together with other people and share your work.” O’Connor said car are much the same. Collectors have numerous options from creating what are known as rat rods, makeshift special creations that can cost as little as a few thousand dollars all the way up to as much as $50,000 in restorations and other work. O’Connor said some see these vehicles as investments, using shows like Syracuse
Valerino said that sales were also good in 2013. “Dodge Caravan was a good seller for us as well as Ram trucks. Dodge Avenger was strong and the new Dodge Charger is gaining momentum. The Charger is an all wheel drive that is fantastic in the snow in Syracuse during winters.” For used car buyers, Summit always has over 75 used cars on the lot – most of them are certified used cars. Summit Dodge is conveniently located on Hiawatha Boulevard West in Syracuse, one mile from Destiny USA. You can see their entire inventory online at summitcars.com. Customer service is key at Hudson & Mowins By Ashley M. Casey Since 1946, Hudson & Mowins has made its name in Baldwinsville as a familyowned auto repair shop with strong connections to its customers. Although a lot has changed in their industry, third-generation owners Greg and Cathy Hudson have kept the founders’ vision alive. “We have stuck with the same ethics [Greg’s] father and grandfather used,” said Cathy Hudson, secretary and treasurer of Hudson & Mowins. Her husband, Greg, is president of Hudson & Mowins. Cathy said they pride themselves on honesty and loyalty to their customers. They rely mostly on wordof-mouth to generate their customer base. “When you live in a small town, you’ve got to treat people right because word gets around,” Cathy said. “We still have customers come in that Greg’s grandfather [co-founder Gates Hudson] used to have,” she added. “They’re very few, but it’s nice to see them.” Caring for the customer is important to Hudson & Mowins. They provide a lounge for people to wait for their cars, and 12-and-a-halfyear-old Welsh Terrier Ally is always up for a friendly pat. “Customers expect to see

In addition to emphasizing paperless communication and heating its facilities with a furnace powered by used motor oil, the business has had solar panels installed on the roof. “On a nice, sunny day,
75 percent of our electricity comes from solar panels,” Cathy Hudson said. Since their September 2011 installation, the panels have fulfilled an average of 30 percent of Hudson & Mowins’ annual power needs. “It’s all part of everybody’s responsibility to take care of Mother Earth,” Cathy said.

creating more and more buzz about people recreating and enjoying that part of the county. I foresee that part of this bringing in tens of thousands of people to use the area and recreate around the lake over the coming years. It’s just phenomenal.” And the amphitheater isn’t the only boost the area is getting. In his budget address, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed an infusion of $50 million into the New York State Fairgrounds to update them and make them into “a world-class entertainment and tourism destination.’’ “If you put money directly into the fairgrounds, that speaks for itself. That’s going to upgrade the facility and make it more friendly to the families and the people that are going to the Fair,” Magnarelli said. “And while we’ve got them here, we can start pointing to the things right outside the State Fair’s door. We have a beautiful park on a beautiful lake with a beautiful amphitheater, and available land on which companies can locate.” So what does all this mean for the area? “In a word, jobs,” Magnarelli said. “The whole thing revolves around creating jobs. And I’m not just talking about the jobs that will be created by building the parks and the amphitheater and fixing the Fair, though that’s going to bring hundreds and hundreds of jobs. When it’s done, it’s going to entice other people into the area to set up shop and create even more jobs for Onondaga County.” Magnarelli said the new construction in the area will make people nationwide aware of how perfect the western suburbs are in which to locate industry. “In this area, up State Fair Boulevard and under the I-690 ramps, you have acres and acres of land that are available for commercial and industrial use. People are now starting to see they can locate here,” he said. “They’ve seen that the environmental matters are surmountable — they can be taken care of and they are being taken care of. On top of that, it’s next to rail. It’s next to interstate roads. You have access to cheap electricity from the village of Solvay. There’s plentiful water available at the site. That’s what commercial and industrial people are looking for.” Magnarelli said some of Cuomo’s other efforts could also help to bring commercial and industrial businesses to the region. “There’s also the possibility of using some of the new tax structures the governor proposed last year,” he said, referencing Cuomo’s START-UP NY program. “Companies can come in and tie in with some of our great universities — we already have SUNY ESF, which is right on the lake, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse University. They can basically come in and put down new industries and new enterprises without having to pay any taxes. We’re seeing in motion here the possibility for bringing in new people to the area to set up new businesses.” It all starts with the construction of the amphitheater, Magnarelli said, and he expects to see changes in the area sooner rather than later. “In speaking to the county executive and her staff, they’re doing everything within their power to get the amphitheater up and running by this fall so it’s operational. That’s pretty aggressive as far as scheduling, but I’m all for it,” he said. “I know that County Executive [Joanie] Mahoney is adamant about pushing it as hard as she can. We may even have the amphitheater in time to have a fall concert on the lake.” As for the money for the fairgrounds, Magnarelli said he’s optimistic that will come through, as well. “I’ve been around Gov. Cuomo for four years. I’ve learned that when he sets his mind on something and he decides he wants something done, it gets done,” he said. “I don’t think this is something I’m looking for my children to see. I think I’ll see an upgraded fairgrounds within the next few years.” While nothing is set in stone, Magnarelli is confident this vision can become a reality. “That’s the vision we have,” Magnarelli said. “It’s not yet a concrete plan, but we’re working on it. We’re starting to connect all of these dots and see where we can go.”

wo exciting new construction projects are slated for 2015, each designed to better meet the needs of CNY’s automotive customers. All-new Burdick Audi and Porsche dealerships are in the early stages of assembly at the Cicero auto complex. Roger Burdick began plans for the state-of-the-art stores in early 2014, and initial construction began in October. Burdick Audi and Porsche have served Central New York auto consumers for more than two decades – initially at the former site on Route 11 in Cicero, then moving into a combined showroom/service facility at Driver’s Village in 2004. Due to significantly increased demand, Roger Burdick is creating two new, separate dealerships on Driver’s Village west end. The two dealerships currently share adjacent showrooms and a common service department—the new dealerships will be separate, stand-alone stores.
