MORTGAGE F.Y.I Rate hike a harbinger of higher mortgage rates? Maybe not Staff reports There’s been wide spread speculation that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this fall for the first time in nearly a decade. Logically, if the Fed increases baseline rates, mortgage rates will follow suit, right? Not necessarily. Despite a lot of national lenders focusing their advertising around refinancing now before the rates go up this fall (if the Fed chooses to do anything, which is still in doubt), mortgage rates may not be as affected by a bump to the Fed rates as it would seem on the surface. In an article published earlier this
year on The Simple Dollar, a site focused on financial news, nationallysyndicated real estate columnist Peter Miller looked at a 30-year history of how baseline interest rates affect mortgage rates. What he found was a little surprising. Over a 30-year period, there was
