Central New York is heating up
S
pring is finally Jennifer here, and with it comes the feeling of renewal Momsense that comes with warmer temperatures (although it seems we’ve hit the deep freeze again recently) and accompanying events that herald the start of the season. These events include the first pitch thrown out at NBT Bank Stadium, the start of the Weekend Wildflower Walks at Baltimore Woods and the opening of
Wing
farmers markets in places such as Cazenovia and Skaneateles. There is much to look forward to in the upcoming months – especially with the completion of the new Lakeview Ampitheater, which will be hosting everyone from Ringo Starr to Snoop Dogg. With both assigned and lawn seating, this venue promises to be the hit of the spring and summer. And don’t forget the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. With spring comes babies and that frigid walk outside to visit with the animals will now see a bit more warmth and sunshine, with budding trees and
flowers and more active animals heralding the beginning of the busy season. There are many festivals coming up, including the Empire Beerfest and Winefest, Oz-Stravaganza! in Chittenango and Taste of Syracuse. Looking for some fun family entertainment, live on stage? Cirque de Soleil’s “Ovo” is stirring up buzz among Central New Yorkers, as are productions such as “42nd Street” and Disney’s “Aristocats Kids.” So, never mind the colder temperatures we’ve just experienced – when it comes to events and activities, CNY is heating up!

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Mexico, N.Y. ... Family camping close to home
L
ast year Bob and Marion Palmer became the new owners of Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Mexico, N.Y., as Ed and Barb Lighthall retired after 45 years of building a wonderful campground. “We believe our decision to purchase Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park was a good one,” said the Palmer’s. “We love the beauty of Central New York and our customers and staff are wonderful people and have made our transition a great experience.” Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,” relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Campers of all ages enjoy wading, tubing and sunbathing in the Little Salmon River. Other activities include jumping on the Jumping Pillow, wagon rides, crafts, field games and interacting with Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. The campground offers riverfront campsites, cabins and park trailers. There is also a pool, basketball court, game room and fully stocked store with camping merchandise, gifts and groceries. They have made changes to the store merchandise and products, offering many new things for campers. Bob and Marion said last year they had a substantial increase in occupancy, which was very encouraging for their first year. “Our returning staff members and new hires were fantastic and were one of the many reasons we had a successful first year,” he said. “Feedback from returning campers was very positive and they liked our approach to customer service and customer engagement/interaction. Feedback from new customers who had never been here was very good as well. Our overall ratings from Trip Advisor, Facebook and our franchise customer survey showed positive improvement too.” The Palmers have also received strong encouragement and assistance from the community leaders and community business owners. “We are looking at continuous upgrades over the next few years, starting this year with renovation of our mini-golf course and expansion of our pool patio,” he said. “Our café is being renovated and changed into an ice cream shop offering softserve ice cream, hard ice cream, milkshakes, slushies, sundaes

and flurries. A walk-up window will be added as well for road traffic.” Last summer, Yogi Bear, Boo Boo and the staff participated in the Mexico Field Days Parade for the first time and their float came in second place! In addition, the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park franchise organization recognized Bob and Marion with three awards - Rookie Owners of the Year, the Outstanding Customer Service Award and the Excellence Award based on customer feedback. The Palmers said they are looking forward to another great year. “The majority of our employees are returning from last year, and we will be hiring several more high school students this year, hoping to develop long-term opportunities for students from the community,” they said. Come for a weekend, week, month or the entire season. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is located at 601 County Route 16, Mexico. For more information call 315-963-7096 or visit jellystonecny.com.

Chasing giants on the Salmon River By Tom Fernandez

hen many people think of fly-fishing, their minds bring them to a mountain stream setting pulled from the pages of “A River Runs Through It.” Upstate New York is home to picturesque streams with beautiful smaller handsized brook trout, but there is an area not far from Syracuse where anglers flock by the thousands to chase large trout and trophy salmon with a fly rod. Venturing to the Salmon River, which geographically runs from the Tug Hill to the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, gives anglers a chance to witness prolific runs of pacific salmon and steelhead trout. Every fall the annual migration of salmon leaving Lake Ontario to spawn in the Salmon River brings anglers looking for the opportunity to feel the power of these fish at the end of a fly rod. Peak season for the salmon run happens usually around the middle of October beginning the earliest in mid-August and ending mid to late November. As salmon season ends steelhead season begins. These acrobatic fish can be targeted from late fall to spring. After
