Energy efficient equals smart savings B’ville biz reduces footprint, educates community By Miranda L. Pennock The sun in Central New York has certainly made an appearance this year, and Greg and Cathy Hudson are taking advantage of its rays. In the last two years, the Hudson family has doubled the size of their business — Hudson & Mowins on East Genesee Street — with the purchase of NAPA AutoCare Center on the adjacent property and invested in solar panels in an effort to use energy more efficiently. “One of the biggest reasons [for installing the panels] was we took a couple steps back and looked at how much electricity we were using,” Greg said, adding that if there was a way to cut back, they should. “It has certainly been a fantastic year for creating power through solar panels.” Just by switching out lighting fixtures, some of which had been in the building since the business opened in 1958, Hudson & Mowins electric bill was reduced by approximately 20 percent each month. After seeing the savings from installing energy efficient fixtures, the couple opted to research additional means of going green and focused on solar energy. Now, with the seven panels in use, Greg said the business’ National Grid bill for October and November 2011 was 75 percent less than the same months in 2010. Along with a reduction on the monthly bill, the Hudsons receive government incentives for going green. Greg said monetary reimbursements have come partially in direct funding as well as tax credits. Despite budget cuts, government programs encouraging renewable energy remain steadfast and intact. “I’ve talked to a few people in the know

from the government [and] they have assured me that as important as it is to save money, it is more important to find alternate energy sources,” he said. “I can’t believe a business would not take advantage of this.” Even though the panels are practically out of sight from the ground, Hudson & Mowins’ use of green technology isn’t hidden from the community by any means. A 24inch LCD monitor is set up in the waiting area where customers can see the amount of energy generated from the sun. As of October Miranda L. Pennock of last year, the solar panels have generated 35 megawatts of electricity, “enough to power the village of Baldwinsville for a couple of days,” said Hudson, and prevented 55,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Baldwinsville resident Ermine Cunningham, an environmentalist and retired teacher, who has been a customer at the business for approximately 20 years, said she hoped other businesses would take notice of Greg and Cathy’s efforts. “[They are] a real inspiration to other businesses in the area and hopefully it will grow,” she said. Cunningham said she believes people ought to think about future generations when consuming energy from finite sources like

coal, which is burned in order to produce electricity. With higher standards for energy efficiency in place, Cunningham said she’s pleased to see Hudson & Mowins taking advantage of solar power and being conscious of the amount of energy the auto shop and parts store uses. “I think it’s wonderful and I am in admiration of them. They decided to take responsibility,” she said. “I was hoping this business could be a model for other businesses.” Occasionally there are holdups where renewable energy is concerned — red tape at the local level and public hearings — but Cunningham, who has supported the Hudsons’ endeavor from the beginning, said municipalities should have policies in place regarding alternative energy sources. Essentially, local government needs to step up to the plate by backing those trying to be more conscious of their energy consumption.

“We should be encouraging these things,” she said. The Hudson family has taken their efforts one step further with the use of a special furnace that burns waste oil drained from automobiles. Greg said they don’t do anything to the oil other than filter it to remove things like strands of paper from the vehicle oil filters. The entire business — 15,000-square-feet of building space — is heated using waste oil. “We’d like to think we took an industry that, 30 to 40 years ago, might have left the dirtiest footprint on the earth in a whole bunch of ways and turned it into one of the cleaner ones. I think a lot of people can relate and appreciate that,” Hudson said. “If it gains us customers, that’s great, too, but that certainly wasn’t the primary reason.” Hudson & Mowins, located at 62 E. Genesee St. in Baldwinsville, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Northside locations are I-Car Gold Class Certified, which means the company’s technicians have undergone extensive training and certifications in all phases of collision repair. Each facility uses the latest technology available for diagnostics and collision repair. They converted to water based, green, environmentally friendly paints from BASF in 2011, Bell said. Jones, who has been with the company for 25 years, said Northside has become the premier collision repair facility in upstate New York. “If you take care of customers they keep coming back,” he said. Northside is now repairing vehicles for three generations in some families. Many customers that had their vehicles repaired in the 1970s when the company was started are still returning, as well as their children and grandchildren, for vehicle repairs. Northside Collision offers loaner vehicles, and rentals on site. You can find a Northside Collision location near you at northsidecollision.com.

Northside Collision is celebrating its 38th year in business in Central New York. Northside opened their original location on North State Street in Syracuse in 1974 and has experienced a methodical growth plan over the past 38 years. Northside is owned by President Scott Jones and CEO Gary Bell; they currently have five Central New York locations and over 125 employees. The most recent store opening is in Liverpool on the corner of John Glenn Boulevard and Route 57; they are celebrating a very successful first year at this new location. Other locations are in Cicero, Dewitt, Camillus and Baldwinsville. Northside has direct repair relationships with several insurance companies. These relationships allow a streamlined approach to the repair process and customers are pleased with the process since the insurance company and Northside Collision are working together to provide a guaranteed repair and a favorable experience rather than an adversarial one, says Bell.

Longley Dodge in Fulton celebrates their 65th anniversary Repeat business secret of success

As if the popular Dodge lineup wasn’t alluring enough to new car buyers, the service at Longley Dodge in Fulton is what keeps customers coming back – some have come back 30 times. “We had one family that bought over 30 vehicles from us, starting with a 1960 Studebaker, said Dennis Longley, president of Longley Dodge. Good service after the sale has been the cornerstone for success at Longley Dodge. Being open 65 years has established a reputation for Longley Dodge of customer satisfaction and quality service, the qualities which

earned the dealership such a good reputation. Besides the generations of car buyers are the three generations of staff at Longley Dodge. Earl and Harold Longley began the business in 1947 strictly as an auto body shop. The family dealership was established in 1955 and the brothers added the Dodge line in 1964, making Longley the longest standing Dodge dealership in Oswego County. Earl’s son Dennis and Harold’s son Gene run the business now, while their sons also work at the dealership. “We’re a family organization, said Dennis. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially sine we’re in a small community. People like to

come here and know they’re going to get good service. And that service isn’t overbearing, Longley said. “Our sales staff doesn’t pressure you, he said. “They’re not pushy. We don’t like to operate that way, because it doesn’t really serve the customer as well. That’s why people keep coming back. “A lot of our business is repeat business, Longley said. “People come back to us. And if there is a problem, people know they can go to the top to find a solution. “The buck stops at my desk, Longley said. Dennis learned the business form the ground up. After graduating from North-

ward University’s Automotive Business School he w2orked in the body shop for 10 years. He joined the sales team in the late 1970s and served as sales manager from 1980 to 2000. He raced for 10 years and in 1989 won the ESTA Mod Championship at ESTA Drag Strip in his 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury. He has rode Harley-Davidson motorcycles for years. Dennis’ son Doug is now the sales manager, a position he has held for more than seven years. Jack Montague is the used car manager. “He buys, sells and appraises used cars for us, said Dennis. “You have to know used cars and trends and Jack

is back with three different engines and 160 horsepower. We have one in stock – and have already taken many orders. They’re built with 68 percent high-strength steel, 10 air bags standard, and it’s the only car in its class that See Longley on page 8

Because they develop a deep talent pool, they are able to promote from within, which furthers their understanding of their customer base. “Our personnel live and work in the same areas as our customers, said Russo. It is because of this veteran talent that they have been able to continue to perform strongly, even in the most difficult operating environments. “This is a win-win environment that we work within. Our employees understand our customers’ concerns and our customers reap the benefit of the association’s ability to quickly adjust to the local economy, which can change rapidly, said the president. The current operating environment in the banking arena is one of change and opportunity. The association is in a stage where policymakers are looking to reform and reshape our financial system no matter what the size or charter of the institution.

Lowery Bros. offers top-of-the-line vehicles, service Lowery Bros. Chrysler-Jeep, Infiniti of Syracuse are located on ‘Historic Automobile Row’ and service experience to the Central New York Chrysler-Jeep community.” For more information or to view both the new and used vehicle inventory at Lowery Bros. visit lowerybros.com. To contact either Martin or Mitton call 472-7844. “Scott and Rich invite all of their current and previous customers to stop in and see them,” Mooney said.

By Jennifer Wing Thanks to its inventory of high-quality vehicles, affordable prices and superior sales staff, Lowery Bros. Chrysler-Jeep dealership is a leading provider of new and used cars to Central Martin New York. In addition to helping car buyers find the car of their dreams, and fighting on their behalf for agreeable financing terms, Lowery Bros. Chrysler-Jeep perMitton forms routine maintenance and auto repair in Syracuse with painstaking perfection such as oil changes, state inspections, tire rotations and brake adjustments. They also do warranty repair for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Lowery Bros. Chrysler-Jeep, located at 647 W. Genesee St. in Syracuse, has recently added two new members to its already sterling team of experts waiting to help customers get top notch service and top of the line vehicles. Rich Martin comes to Lowery Bros. as service manager and Scott Mitton is now sales manager at the dealership. General Manager Joe Mooney said Martin and Mitton bring with them a great deal of experience in and knowledge of the auto business and with Chrysler and Jeep in particular. “Lowery Brothers Chrysler-Jeep is excited to welcome two new and important members to their team,” Mooney said. “Combined, they bring more than 40 years of professional sales

Lowery Bros. Infiniti of Syracuse brings luxury, performance to CNY roads

Infiniti truly offers the best of the best in a luxury automobile – and Infiniti of Syracuse, 736 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, has a complete line of new and pre-owned inventory with an expert staff that can help customers find exactly what they are looking for. “We’ve been here since August of 2006 when Gary Lowery bought the dealership,” Mooney said. “One thing that is unique about Infiniti of Syracuse is that we are the only Infiniti dealership in the city of Syracuse. The next closest to Central New York is in Rochester. Because of the fact that we serve a large area, we get a lot of traffic, but our customers each get personalized, expert assistance when they walk into the dealership.” At Infiniti of Syracuse they know the customer’s time is valuable and their sales department has one purpose: to exceed his or her expectations from test drive to delivery. They are committed to a no-pressure, high integrity approach to the customer’s ownership experience. Mooney said Infiniti vehicles are unusual in that they provide both luxury and performance. “With our vehicles, you have good

Syracuse is obviously a big SUV town because of the winters here.” The best seller for Infiniti of Syracuse is the G37X all-wheel-drive mid size sedan, which Mooney calls “a lot of car for the money. It’s is good on roads in the winter, and is available in a two- or four-door model.” He said they have an unprecedented amount of them right now. “We’ve never stocked this many of them – we have about 50 of them on the lot, so there are plenty of choices of colors and

equipment. What is nice about the Infiniti line is you can get all of the vehicles with all-wheel-drive except for the convertible model.” The service department offers the best in automotive service in its state-of-the-art facility which features the most current diagnostic and repair equipment available and highly skilled factory-trained technicians who will deliver efficient, quality vehicle care. “The service here is second to none,” Mooney said. “If you have your car serviced here, they not only do a great job, but make sure you aren’t inconvenienced and receive the best in customer care. If you don’t have time to wait for your car, they will give you a brand new loaner to use.” So, what’s new on the horizon for Infiniti of Syracuse? “We are looking to remodel the showroom,” Mooney said. “Stay tuned.” For more information call 471-3979 or visit infinitiofsyracuse.com.

Par-K Chrysler-Jeep humming right along By Brian Smith Chrysler Group LLC continues to improve model sales, and Par-K Chrysler-Jeep in Fulton is excited to show consumers what the buzz is all about. “We have something for everyone, from the Chrysler 200s and 300s, to the Jeep Compass, Patriot and Grand Cherokee,” said Par-K General Manager Thomas Gilbo. “[Fiat-Chrysler CEO] Sergio Marchionne pledged to change everything when he took over two years ago, and those changes, from the body types to the engines, have all taken place. “The product is very much improved. There was great detail and care taken in redesigning all of the cars, and it shows. A lot of our models have the V6 Penestar engine, and some V8s, which means improved performance and gas mileage. The Grand Cherokee and Chrysler Town & Country are getting close to 30 miles per gallon on the highway; that’s very impressive.” Par-K, much like the cars it sells, underwent improvements last year. After an ice storm collapsed the roof on its body shop during Super Bowl Sunday last year, Gilbo said the garage was rebuilt from the floor up, reopening in July.

“It’s beautiful; everything is brand new and top of the line in the shop,” he added. “We’ve been back to normal with our hours since the summer. “Bill Marshall and Butch Jackowski do an incredible job managing the shop. They do custom work and have multiple cars featured in magazines, and, of course, are there for all the dents and dings and insurance work you may need.” They recently converted a brand new 2012 Jeep Wrangler into a truck, using a Mopar package, assembled in the body shop (see photo, right.) Par-K also added Saturday maintenance hours in September. Cars are serviced from 8 a.m. to noon, in addition to the normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours Monday through Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The Saturday hours are great for people who can’t get off work during the weekdays, or have something they need to take care of in a pinch,” Gilbo said. “We do a lot of maintenance and brake jobs on Saturdays so you can have your car back on the road for work on Monday.” Gilbo urged those in the market for a new Chrysler or jeep to visit Par-K. “Sales on the Jeep Libertys have been strong with the great rebate available,” said Gilbo. “Jeep Compass and Patriot have done

models.” To view and test drive any of the Chrysler and Jeep models, visit Par-K, Oswego County’s only Five Star Chrysler dealer, located on Route 481 in Fulton. “We’re here to stay,” Bob Clark said. “This is a family-owned business and the sons will eventually take over the dealership as the older owners retire.” Quality service and products at competitive prices Clark said Fayetteville Dodge gets a lot of repeat customers as well as customer referrals. “We offer more than fair prices,” he said. “We’re always negotiating — there’s plenty of factory programs out there, where if we sell enough vehicles we get money back which makes the low prices worthwhile.” He said the service at Fayetteville Dodge

is top notch as well. “Our service department is the reason why people buy their second, third and fourth vehicle here,” Clark said. One exciting new addition to the dealership’s lineup is the Dodge Dart, coming out this month. “The Dart has had a lot of buzz,” Clark said. “It’s a car that sells for under $20,000 that gets 39 miles to the gallon with a lot of the electronic wizardry that consumers want.” Fayetteville Dodge is located at 5427 N. Heart n’ Hand bake shop doubles in size Heart n’ Hand bake shop is locatd on Route 321 in Skaneateles. Heart n’ Hand bake shop on Route 321 in Skaneateles held the grand opening of its new expansion on Wednesday, July 4, offering soft-serve ice cream, flurries, pie sundaes and pie a la mode from the new walk-up ice cream window. The addition took eight months to complete and doubles the size of the bake shop. In addition to creating space for ice cream, the addition’s main purpose was to create an on-site kitchen for owners Jim and Donna Parr to cook in, rather than cook from their home and transport baked goods to the shop as they had been doing for the past 12 years. “We don’t have to overbake, everything is fresh all the time,” Donna said. “If we start running low we can bake more. If people call for a certain type of pie in the morning we can make it for them and have it ready in the afternoon.” “We don’t have to say ‘no’ any more,” Jim said. The original space of Heart n’ Hand provides a different look but the same offerings, especially the Parrs’ famous pies. And they have incorporated the pies into the new ice cream with their pie sundaes and pie a la mode. Patrons can sit outside at picnic tables or bistro tables on the new patio area while they eat. Heart n’ Hand’s also has new extended hours. The Parrs will continue to open at 11 a.m., but will not close until later in the evening, at least until 9 p.m. on weekends, although the complete hours are still to be determined, Donna said.

Pros and cons to third-row seating: What works best for your driving needs? of seats stems primarily from the increased prevalence of booster and other child safety seats, which tend to take up a lot of space. This enables more children to be seated safely, a boon to parents who carpool. Third-row seats are also advantageous to commuters who carpool. Several adults can sit comfortably

and ride into work together, splitting the cost of gas and tolls. Many vehicles with third-row seats offer good gas mileage, making carpooling an even greener method of getting to work. The t hird-row s e at can often be folded down and allow for more cargo room when not needed. In some models, a thirdrow seat can be removed

entirely. Disadvantages While the third-row seat offers more passenger room, it cuts down on storage space. Many vehicles that offer the extra row of seating do so at the expense of trunk or cargo space. There may be little more than a few feet of room to store groceries or luggage. Vehicles with a third-

row seat tend to be more expensive than comparable cars and SUV’s without one. Some minivans are more expensive than simarly sized SUVs. If money is a factor, a third-row seat may not be an asset. In addition, insurance companies might charge more for a larger car. Size might also be a disadvantage to some drivers.

Larger vehicles might be difficult to park in urban areas and may require special parking spots in parking garages. Third-row seats can be very advantageous for people who frequently transport several people. But they may not be the best option for individuals looking for a lower priced car or one with maximum cargo space.

20394

Advantages The primary reason for purchasing a vehicle with a third-row seat is to increase passenger capacity. Most standard cars and mid-size SUVs can seat 5 passengers comfortably. However, a third-row seat can add a spot for an additional 2 to 3 passengers. The need for a third row

Third-row seating has become a priority for many people purchasing new vehicles. Many consumers actively seek out a car or SUV with a third-row seat so they’ll have plenty of room for passengers during commutes or school carpools. There are many advantages to a third row of seating, but there are also some disadvantages. Weighing the pros and cons before purchase will help shoppers determine if a third-row seat is really what they need.
