Chiefs grow cold, but ball club welcomes outfielder Michael Taylor back to Syracuse four hits and struck out six Chiefs to record the win for Rochester.

Frigid temperatures and bitter winds kept crowds away Hump Day slugfest in droves last week at NBT On a similarly dreary Bank Stadium as the Syracuse Wednesday, April 22, the Chiefs hosted Thruway rivals, pitching imploded for both the Rochester Red Wings. teams. In the top of the fourth, after second baseman Josh Johnson failed to cleanly Nationals, sent 24-year-old phenom Michael field a hard liner by Aaron Hicks, Bleier allowed Taylor back to Syracuse last week after Nats two runs. Rogers, on the other hand, allowed outfielder Denard Span returned to that

team’s lineup after an injury. Taylor, a talented ballplayer originally from Fort Lauderdale, had played 12 games with the Nationals this season, batting .271 with two home-runs. An exciting athlete who hits for average, hits for power and seemingly steals bases at will, Taylor covers plenty of ground in the outfield although the Chiefs are also using him as a designated hitter. In his first nine at-bats here, Taylor slapped five base hits including one four-bagger, and he swiped two bases.

In the fourth inning April 22 with the score tied 6-6, Chiefs manager Billy Gardner Jr. earned his first ejection of the season after home plate umpire Chad Whitson had heard

enough. Gardner confronted the ump after Taylor was called out on strikes on a pitch that most observers saw as low.

Upcoming home games

The Chiefs hit the road to Rochester and Pawtucket before returning to NBT Bank Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Friday, May 1 (with fireworks following the game); at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, May 2 and Sunday May 3, against the Columbus Clippers, farm team of the Cleveland Indians. Then, May 4-6, they’ll host Baltimore Orioles farmhands, the Norfolk Tides here. Ticket prices range from $4 to $12, and parking costs $5; syracusechiefs.com; 474-7833.

Syracuse Heart Walk raises $510,000 to fight heart disease and stroke

are welcome to come to discuss claims or file new claims with a DAV National Service Officer. No appointment is necessary. For more information call 447-4267.

Thousands of people from across Central New York came together at the 2015 Syracuse Heart Walk to fight the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers: heart disease and stroke. The greater Syracuse region drew a crowd of approximately 3,000 fundraising walkers and runners that lined the Onondaga Community College campus on Saturday, March 28. Pre-event activities were held inside the SRC Arena, including blood pressure screenings, healthy demonstrations, a Fun Run for kids and entertainment. Participants helped raise $510,000 at the 2015 Syracuse Heart Walk. Over the past three decades of Heart Walk in Syracuse, the generous community has raised more than $5 million for lifesaving research, education, training, and advocacy programs. If you were not able to participate in today’s event but would still like to support the American Heart Association, you can donate at SyracuseHeartWalk.org.

Footage worthy of the big sc Wedding videography has come a long way A couple’s wedding day is often a whirlwind for the brideand groom-to-be. Happy couples hope to remember every little detail, but that can be difficult when so much is going on. That is why many brides and grooms hire videographers to preserve the memories of their weddings. Couples who fail to capture their ceremony and reception on film may feel like they missed out once their big day has come and gone. As a result, a professional videographer can

be a wise investment. Today’s wedding videos have come a long way from their poorly produced predecessors. Gone are the potentially cheesy effects and elevator music. Many of today’s videos are artfully edited and highly cinematic productions that could have couples wishing they were viewing videos in theaters. The following are some wedding video trends popular among today’s couples.

Brief clips and highlights

Few people want to sit through their entire wedding day frame-by-frame. Montages of key elements of the day are much more popular than a chronological unfolding of the ceremony and reception. Some videographers like to show snippets of what's to come at the start of the wedding video, then go into more extensive segments later on.

Special filters or film

Filters and lighting effects can give a wedding video an entirely different feel. For example, filming in 8mm can lend a grainy touch to the video and make it seem ethereal or even part of a home movie collection. However, few people want the stark reality of a high-definition camera that highlights every flaw.

Film chapters

Instead of a stationary camera on a tripod, this method of filming incorporates different angles and close-up shots to give the video a modern feel. It's shot more like a movie than a documentary, allowing viewers to feel as though they're really experiencing the event.

Artistic, indy feel

Film buffs may want a wedding video that breaks the mold. Ask videographers to create something that would fit in at the Sundance or Tribeca film festivals.

Same-day editing

Want to revisit the ceremony at your wedding reception? Some videographers will edit portions of the ceremony and preparations for the big day in the time between the ceremony and reception. This gives all guests, including those who may not have been able to make the ceremony, the chance to view the nuptials.

Unobtrusive technology

This trend relates to the equipment used to capture wedding memories rather than the actual finished product. No one wants their view of the ceremony or reception to be marred by a big, bulky camera. Smaller video cameras enable videographers to seamlessly blend in and perhaps capture shots that larger cameras could not. Preserving wedding memories takes on new meaning when couples explore the growing trends in wedding videos.

42369_5

Dividing segments of the video into different chapters allows viewers to fast forward to the parts they want to see and pass those they can skip. This saves the hassle of having to watch the video in its entirety.

Family style

B15

Dramatic presentation of the hot trends in food at wedding receptions can add an elegant air while expressing the personality of the newlyweds.

Rustic and informal weddings have grown in popularity. Rather than food being brought to the guests or participants lining up in buffet lines, family-style dining allows guests to share conversation and pass the peas at the same time. Larger, rectangular tables allow more guests to sit with one another and serve themselves food from community plates located in the center of the tables.

Food and beverage pairings

Food-forward wedding couples are offering guests mouthwatering appetizers matched with a cocktail. A slider and a craft beer or a dumpling and a shot of saki are examples of this trend.

Nontraditional ‘fake’ cakes

Instead of a multi-tiered cake or the cupcake fad that is starting to fizzle, couples are now opting for something new. Desserts that mimic the look of cake, but aren’t quite that combination of sponge and frosting are trending. Crepes, pies, cookies, and doughnuts are acceptable and can add a creative spark to the cake-cutting ceremony. When offered along with dessert stations, guests can certainly get their fill of sweet delights.

Vegan, gluten-free options

Chances are one or more people attending the reception will be on a restricted diet. Rather than relegate these guests to dining on side dishes and patchwork meals, certain couples are building entire offerings around vegan and gluten-free foods.

The look of a traditional wedding cake can be achieved without the typical combination of sponge and frosting. FILE PHOTOS

Country sensation Sara Evans to headline concert to benefit the Food Bank of Central New York

Vernon Downs owner to personally match ticket sales with donation Country singer and songwriter Sara Evans is adding to the excitement of upcoming harness racing season at Vernon Downs. Evans will entertain audiences at a concert this summer that benefits the Food Bank of Central New York. Sara Evans is best known for hits such as “Born to Fly” and “Stronger.” She has released eight studio albums in her career, including two just last year. Tickets for the July 3 concert will be sold for $15, and all proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank of Central New York. Owner

Jeff Gural will personally donate an additional $15 per ticket sold and an extra 50 cents on top of every dollar donated to the Food Bank of Central New York on the day of the show. “We are so pleased to be able to bring such a big name in country music to Vernon Downs,” Gural said. “The low ticket price should make * & )RRGV LV D 6\UDFXVH EDVHG UHIULJHUDWHG IUR]HQ ZDUHKRXVLQJ for an affordable evening out, plus people can DQG 'LVWULEXWLRQ &RPSDQ\ feel good knowing :H DUH UDSLGO\ JURZLQJ DQG LQ the money they spend goes to help a good cause. ” QHHG RI VRPH KLJKO\ VNLOOHG DQG H[SHULHQFHG &'/ $ 'ULYHUV 7KHVH Tickets went on sale to the public on SatSRVLWLRQV DUH FULWLFDOO\ LPSRUWDQW urday, April 18, atWR WKH WLPHO\ GLVWULEXWLRQ RI RXU all Ticketmaster locations. Downs Casino Players Club window. The show itself will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, July 3, and doors will open at 6 p.m. Past concerts have successfully raised thousands of dollars for the Food Bank of Central New York, a cause that means a lot to Gural. “Our region in particular has been hit hard by tough times recently,” said Gural. “With so many people struggling to put food on the table for their families, I can’t think of a better cause which we can all feel good about supporting.” For 30 years, the Food Bank of Central New

York has been helping to feed the hungry in the area. This year, the Food Bank of Central New York is prepared to distribute enough food to make more than 14 million meals for individuals and families in need. For every dollar donated to the Food Bank of Central New York, 96 cents goes directly towards helping feed the hungry in central and northern New York. The remaining four cents covers administrative costs. For more information on Vernon Downs, visit vernondowns.com.

National Grid named 2015 World’s Most Ethical Company National Grid announced Monday that it has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as a 2015 World’s Most Ethical Company.® The World’s Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes those organizations that have had a material impact on the way business is conducted by fostering a culture of ethics and transparency at every level of the company. Being a five-year honoree underscores National Grid’s commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices ensuring long-term value to key stakeholders including customers, employees, suppliers, regulators and investors. National Grid is

one of only eight companies in the Energy and Utilities category, and 132 companies worldwide, to be honored this year. “Being recognized by Ethisphere is a tribute to the employees at National Grid. They have truly embraced ethics and made great strides in building it into our corporate culture. It’s also recognition that we have a ‘best in class’ ethics and compliance program, the foundation of which results from our strong leadership and the fact that ‘Always Doing the Right Thing’ is at the center of everything we do at the company,” said William J. Holzhauer, National Grid’s US Director of Ethics and Compliance. “The World’s Most Ethical Companies embrace the correlation between ethical business practice and improved company

performance. These companies use ethics as a means to further define their industry leadership and understand that creating an ethical culture and earning the World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition involves more than just an outward facing message or a handful of senior executives saying the right thing,” said Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “Earning this recognition involves the collective action of a global workforce from the top down. We congratulate everyone at National Grid for this extraordinary achievement.” The World’s Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient™ (EQ) framework developed over years of research to provide a means to assess an organization’s performance in an

objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The EQ framework and methodology is determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere’s network of thought leaders and from the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35 percent), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20 percent), culture of ethics (20 percent), governance (15 percent) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10 percent).
