Dropping out? By Russ Tarby During the week between Christmas and New Year’s, the Syracuse Crunch shot down the Springfield Falcons before being outshone by the Utica Comets for a seasonal split. The win and the loss dropped Syracuse down to sixth place in the American Hockey League’s North Division and 10th in the Eastern Conference at 12-12-4-1 (.500). If the home team hopes to make the AHL’s Calder Cup playoffs in April, it’s going to have to split less and sweep more. The Crunch needs to finish no lower than fourth in its division to qualify for post-season play. On Dec. 26 at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, the Crunch started out down one goal in the first period, but came back strong
to pot three consecutive tallies to roll past the Springfield Falcons, 3-1. Syracuse shooters Brian Hart and Tanner Richard both notched their first goals of the season, while Tye McGinn recorded the game-winner with his third goal in two games. Crunch goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy turned aside 29 of 30 shots to pick up the win. Syracuse converted on its sole power-play opportunity, and shut down both Falcons’ man-advantages.
With another man-advantage, Crunch defenseman Slater Koekkoek recorded his first goal of the season, while Blujus – a 6-foot-3 defenseman who hails from Buffalo – tallied number three. Another talented D-man, 20-yearold Anthony DeAngelo, hit the 20-point mark with his 17th assist this year. Crunch netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves, while his opponent, Richard Bachman, recorded the win for the Comets with 20 stops. In 2015-16, the AHL will have 16 of its 30 teams participating in the postseason.
The next afternoon in Utica, Crunch blueliner Dylan Blujus opened the scoring early on the power play, but the Utica Comets played a successful game of catchup and eventually surpassed the Crunch 4-2, on Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
The top four teams in each of the league’s four divisions as ranked by points percentage (points earned divided by points available) will qualify for the 2016
The Crunch fall to sixth place in the AHL North Division
playoffs, with one possibility for a “crossover” in each conference: if the fifth-place team in the Atlantic or Central Division finishes with a better points percentage than the fourth-place team in the North or Pacific Division, it would compete in the other division’s bracket. As of Dec. 27, the Crunch had played 29 games of its 72-game season. Home again on Jan. 9 The next Crunch home game will be against the Hershey Bears at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, 800 S. State St., in downtown Syracuse. Ticket prices range from $16 to $24; 473-4444; .syracusecrunch.com. All Crunch games are broadcast by ESPN Radio 97.7 FM, with play-by-play by Dan D’Uva.
SCOTT THOMAS
Syracuse Crunch blueliner Dylan Blujus, a 21-year-old native of Buffalo, scored his third goal of the season Dec. 27 in a losing effort against the Utica Comets, at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Tips for navigating winter weather from the snow and ice ‘experts’ The first blast of winter to the Northeast hit recently. While Northeasterns are equipped to handle snow and ice, here are some winter reminders from the Snow and Ice Management Association (SIMA), the North American trade association representing snow management professionals. “Venturing out during a snowstorm or mixed precipitation increases the chance of having a car accident, getting stranded, breaking a bone or suffering from frostbite. The
best advice is to stay home,” said Martin B. Tirado, SIMA CAE and CEO. SIMA, the North American nonprofit organization representing snow and ice removal professionals, has these tips to stay safe during this weekend winter weather event. Tip 1: Wear proper shoes. While fashion is great, the right shoes to navigate snow and ice place the entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible, heavy treads and a flat bottom.
Tip 2: Be prepared. Have an ice scraper and brush in your car--not in the trunk, as snow may make it difficult to open the trunk. Have a full tank of gas; check the tire pressure, battery, and oil. Wear the proper clothing--boots, gloves, hats, scarves, etc., and take extra clothes. Charge your cell phone before leaving home and take a car charger. Carry a safe winter car kit containing items such as kitty litter, rock salt, a shovel, a blanket, flares, water, etc.
Tip 3: Slow down. The time you need to stop, the possibility of sliding increases when it starts to snow or in freezing conditions. Tip 4: Check the news. Listen to the news to hear about your local road conditions. Pay attention to what roads are impassable and plan another route if those routes affect you. If the roads are hazardous or closed, stay home. Following these tips will help ensure that you survive a blizzard safely. For more snow and ice tips, visit SIMA.

Fort to showcase unique history in new exhibit
Fort Ontario State Historic Site will open a new interactive main exhibit this year to interpret its role as one of the nation’s most historically significant military sites. The exhibit’s centerpiece will be a section of the original fence that circled the post during World War II when it served as the only refugee shelter in the United States for victims of the Nazi Holocaust. “Some of these refugees of wartorn Europe had escaped from Nazi concentration camps before making their way through enemy lines to Italy and Allied Forces internment camps,” said Fort Ontario Site Supervisor Paul Lear. “This experience made them terrified when they saw the chain link and barbed wire fence that surrounded Fort Ontario when they arrived. This feeling changed soon enough though as, during their first month of internment and quarantine at the fort, the fence became an emotional meeting place where they met with Oswegonians and interacted, exchanged information, and established enduring friendships. Residents passed clothing, food, shoes, candy, and even bicycles over or through the fence to those in need inside the shelter.” Much of the fort’s new display next year will utilize touch-screen technology, which allows for more details and artifacts to be included. Kelly Jordal, Oswego County Tourism Office Fort Ontario State Historic Site Heidi Miksch, a conservator from the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites Resource Center at Peebles Island, N.Y., worked with will re-open in May 2016. For de- Brian Hibbert (center) and Historic Park Manager Ron Healt (right), both from the fort, to retrieve this piece of fencing and prepare it tails, call 343-4711. for treatment before it goes on display next year.

Give Your Christmas Tree New Life OCRRA turns old conifers into mulch at compost sites
According to the National Christmas Tree Association, “there are more than 4,000 local Christmas tree recycling programs throughout the United States.” Luckily, Onondaga County is home to many tree recycling programs! Get rid of your tree and give it new life by turning it into mulch. Completing this environmentally-friendly act is not complicated. Most municipalities, including the City of Syracuse, have a pick-up or drop-off program for Christmas trees. Residents should contact their local municipality for specific information on their program. Although OCRRA does not accept trees in the blue bin, both the Amboy and Jamesville Compost Sites are open select hours, Jan. 4 – Jan. 16 for tree drop off.
Amboy and Jamesville Compost Site Hours from Jan. 4 – Jan. 16:
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. – noon. Sunday, closed. There is no charge to use either of the OCRRA Compost Sites during January. Simply stop by during designated hours and follow these rules for tree preparation: Remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, tree stands and plastic bags. “Next spring the trees will be ground into mulch that OCRRA Compost Site users may haul away for landscaping use,” said OCRRA Recycling Operations Manager Greg Gelewski. Visit tinyurl.com/OCRRAxmastrees for details.
Save money and energy this winter National Grid offers tips to CNY homeowners We may have not gotten a significant accumulation of snow yet this winter, but National Grid encourages customers to follow simple energy efficiency tips to ensure that everyone enjoys a safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly winter. Advanced power strips can save up to $100 per year in energy costs by eliminating “standby energy loss.” When peripheral appliances such as audio equipment or computer monitors are not being used, they often still consume energy. Advanced
power strips shut off electricity to such devices automatically, while maintaining power to products that need it, such as cable boxes or modems. Additional energy-saving tips: Cost effective cooking – Use the smallest appliance, pan and burner while cooking to save energy. For example, microwave ovens require less than half the energy of a conventional oven. Slow cookers are great ways to cook for a family and save money. On average, a whole meal can be cooked in a slow cooker for 17 cents worth of electricity. Smart Baking – Improve oven efficiency by keeping the doors closed as much as possible and baking several dishes at the
same time and temperature. Keeping food cool – Newer refrigerators are more energy efficient than older ones. Refrigerators and freezers operate more efficiently when the doors are kept closed as much as possible. If necessary, leaving the doors open for a longer period of time is more efficient than opening and closing them several times. Storing food – Keep extra beverages and leftovers cold by storing them in a garage or on a porch, if temperatures permit. Unplugging a second refrigerator or freezer can save $23 per month in electricity costs. Old refrigerators and freezers can be recycled through National Grid. The appliance will be picked up for free
at a customer’s convenience. Taking an older unit out of operation can save up to $150 a year in avoided electric costs and National Grid will pay a $50 reward for the appliance. Smart “stuff ” – When buying a television, computer or other big electronic gifts or appliance this year do the right thing by purchasing a product with the Energy Star label. For more information, visit energystar.gov . For more information about home energy audits and other energy savings available to customers visit nationalgridus.com, select your region or state from the menu at the top of the page and click on “Energy efficiency services.”

Make specific resolutions for Need some ‘Buddy’ to love? your health this New Year by Donna Newman
Y
ou want to get healthy for the New Year! Great news! You write it down, “I will get healthy in 2016.” So it is written, so it is done. Not quite. Vague, non-specific New Year’s resolutions are likely to fail. If you want to get healthy, be specific about your goal and how you will achieve it. With more than 60 percent of Americans being overweight and obese, many resolve to lose weight by exercising. The American Heart Association recommends exercising 30 minutes at least five days a week. For success in achieving your exercise goal, make the goal specific. “I will consume only 1,800 calories per day and burn more calories than I consume. I will eat salad for lunch and whole grain cereals for breakfast. I will bring my sneakers to work and walk at lunch for 30 minutes. I will walk my dog every morning for 15 minutes before breakfast.” Simply ‘joining a gym’ doesn’t make you go. Make it a specific routine. ‘I will get up one hour early three days a week and go to the gym.’” Nearly half of all Americans have high cholesterol. If your goal is to reduce your cholesterol, make the changes specific. “I will use low-fat or non-fat sour cream, dressings and cheese. I will eat tuna for lunch twice a week and cook fish for dinner once a week. I will eat whole grain bread. I will choose only lean red meat and eat it only on weekends. I will
eat greens three times per week. I will choose salad or fruit as a side dish when eating out.” Keep it positive. Avoid negative statements like “I will stop eating junk food,” and instead frame it positively, “I will eat fruits for snacks.” Enter these goals on your daily “to-do list” and make them a priority. Make sure you enable yourself to achieve the goals. If you want to eat healthy meals, those items have to be in the house, available. You have to make a plan for success. And don’t go it alone! Engage friends or co-workers – they’re likely to have similar goals, and who doesn’t need a little fan club when you succeed? Facts: 40 to 45 percent of American adult make one or more resolutions each year 75 percent maintain it past the first week 46 percent maintain it after 6 months (source: 2002 University of Scranton study, Journal of Clinical Psychology) The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association are devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke – the two leading causes of death in the world, teaming with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. To learn more or to get involved, call 1-800AHA-USA1 or visit heart.org .
Buddy’s kind of a big deal around here. He recently went on the news with local legend Laura Hand, where he met District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick. But he hasn’t let celebrity go to his head – Buddy is still the same sweet, goofy, lovable lab he’s always been! Buddy came to the shelter when his owners moved and did not take him along. This sweet guy is young, playful and energetic and would do great in an active family with kids seven and older. He would make a great running partner - and he also likes cats and dogs! Buddy is quick to learn and eager to please. If you’re looking for some “Buddy” to love, come and meet Buddy for yourself and see what a special dog he is!
