ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AS YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED YOURSELF, EAGLE’S NEST IS A place where young people reveal and embrace their best selves through simple living, a deep connection to nature, and living well in community. It is your support that makes this all possible. 2015 brought 556 young people to Eagle’s Nest Camp, 30 teens to Hante Adventures and 49 students to The Outdoor Academy. 120 of these bright stars were able to join our programs through gifts you made to the 2015 Annual Fund. Your generosity contributed to a total $359,680 that was granted in aid for 2015. Across our campus we saw wonderful improvements to our infrastructure. The Health/Dean Hut was completely refurbished with an HVAC system, new roof and wood flooring. The Sun Lodge is sporting a new metal roof and new flooring for the Den and Dining Room. Cabins 4 and 5 have new roofs, the New Lodge has a new ramp and deck, and our programs now have a new Mini Bus to propel us to off campus adventures. Your financial support went a long way in helping this all come to fruition. Beyond our annual improvements we have also been making great strides in our work toward our Centennial Priorities. The teams of volunteers who leant their expertise this year in the realms of marketing, social media and sustainability planning have been tremendous. My deepest gratitude to you, our Eagle’s Nest community at large, for all you do in so many ways to make Eagle’s Nest that special place where simple living, nature, community and being your best-self thrive and grow.

Session 2

We are building a culture of gratitude, community, and giving here at Eagle’s Nest, and it certainly showed this summer. 114 campers donated their canteen balances and two of our counselors ran mini-fundraising campaigns to support the Camp Scholarship Fund. Their contributions raised almost $6,000! Thanks to all of you, over 100 children were able to connect with the natural world, grow in confidence, feel compassion

JULY

EAGLE’S NEST CAMP & HANTE and experience joy in a warm and nurturing community – our Nest on Hart Road. Each winter we review scholarship applications from families who are eager to attend a session at Eagle’s Nest, but need financial help to do so. As I read parents’ hopes and dreams for their children, I am reminded of just how valuable this experience is and was for thousands in our community. One parent wrote about her 15-year-old daughter:

“Her experiences at Eagle’s Nest have a huge impact on who she is becoming and on how she views the world around her and how she interacts with others. At Eagle’s Nest she gets to try out new things in a supportive and safe environment. Her confidence in her abilities to maneuver through the world is the gift that Eagle’s Nest sends her home with at the end of the session.” Her experience would not have been possible without you. Before long the warblers will return to my backyard. Their morning songs will remind me that campers all over the country and abroad will soon begin packing their trunks and heading to the mountains. I know that they are as excited about camp as the birds are about the spring. Thank you for filling their hearts with joy.

Letter from the

OA Director

LAST SPRING, SHORTLY BEFORE I joined the Eagle’s Nest team, I visited The Outdoor Academy to observe Semester 40’s graduation. Our Academic Dean, Katie Harris, said something to me during that visit that stuck. “Every teacher dreams of changing the lives of their students for the better. At The Outdoor Academy, this happens every semester.”

Having now experienced for myself an entire semester (and a half), I can fully appreciate Katie’s comment. This past December, as we said farewell to Semester 41, it was so clear to me that for each of our students, this had been the most consequential four months of their young lives. described the sense of personal transformation as seeing the world “as if for the first time, through brand new eyes.” The mother of one of our Semester 41 students commented during our final family meeting, “I never knew my child was so strong.” It has been deeply satisfying for me to discover that students who experience an Outdoor Academy semester, built upon the foundation of our four cornerstones and seven principles, are more than just smart. They have learned to make connections between big ideas. They have learned to flourish in the natural world and, through that, to understand our responsibilies as stewards of that world. They have learned

to expect quality in everything they create with their hands and their minds. They have learned to take care of themselves and each other, to live well and simply in community. This is the nature of our work at The Outdoor Academy and Eagle’s Nest. To be engaged in this work is indeed, as Katie said so well almost a year ago, “the dream of every teacher.” The faculty and staff of The Outdoor Academy are profoundly grateful for the generous support that makes this dream possible. Thank you. With sincere gratitude,

Roger Herbert
