ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DEAR EAGLE’S NEST FAMILIES, 2016 was a year of great celebration for us. We officially wrapped up a six-year initiative placing 76% of our property under a conservation agreement with the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and The Clean Water Management Trust Fund of North Carolina. For generations to come, our students and campers will enjoy the same woods, streams and pastures that we do today. Our forest friends will forever roam their Eagle’s Nest habitat. Our streams will always run fresh and clear into our very own Little River and on to the French Broad. The plant species that grace our lands will be forever protected in their little corner of the Southern Appalachians. It is an exciting time for the Nest and you are an integral part of making it all happen! 2016 brought 580 young people to Eagle’s Nest Camp and Hante Adventures and 56 students to The Outdoor Academy. 143 of these eager children and teens were able to join our programs through gifts you made to the 2016 Annual Fund. Your generosity contributed 30% of the total $502,371 granted in aid for 2016, and for that we are very thankful. Several buildings around campus had much needed updates. A good number of offices, classrooms and program areas received refurbished floors. Lots of fresh paint and cabinetry all made our indoor spaces more welcoming. We purchased new bunk beds, a tiller attachment for the walk-behind garden tractor, canoes and other essential equipment. Your financial support went a long way in helping this all become reality. Looking toward our Centennial in 2027, we are heavily focused on drafting a comprehensive sustainability plan for the entire organization. This is a top priority for us as we continue to improve our ability to “walk our talk” in our commitment to living more harmoniously with the natural world. Other key initiatives underway include increasing professional development, studying and deepening our ability to “better human character”, and growing our alumni program. You are a critical cog in this wheel of timely and important work we are doing with and for our young people. You are making Eagle’s Nest the special place where simple living, nature, community and being your best-self thrive and grow. With sincere thanks and gratitude,

Noni Waite-Kucera, Executive Director

Camp & Hante 2016 a summer of memories... NATURE Harvesting fresh produce from the garden.

This winter I spent a whirlwind week of visiting with Eagle’s Nesters in New England –my first foray that far North in all of the time that I’ve worked for Eagle’s Nest. As I traveled through Massachusetts and Connecticut I was greeted with hugs, smiles and laughter; even though it was winter in New England, I was warm all week. A highlight of my trip was lunch with Jim Suojanen. You can read more about Jim in the fall edition of The Eagle available on our website. Jim was a camper at Eagle’s Nest in the 1960s, and it’s clear from all his stories that the years he spent at Eagle’s Nest as a child and teen made a significant impact on his life. As we sat down, Jim shared that he has recently begun taking guitar lessons because he loved singing at camp so much. He even has a camp song book. Jim recently set up a Charitable Gift Annuity to provide financial assistance for more campers to have the opportunity to come to camp. Later that same night, during a

EAGLE’S NEST CAMP & HANTE camp party in Boston, I was able to catch up with Dana O’Neal – a veteran Nester who, over the course of her many years at Eagle’s Nest, participated in Huck Finn, went on several Hantes, was a Junior Counselor, and worked as a member of our staff. For the last several years Dana has been teaching middle school math and she recently became a principal at a charter school. Dana and I brainstormed ways to get some of her students to Eagle’s Nest, and she talked about her interest in infusing more of the Eagle’s Nest culture and emphasis on experiential education and responsibility to community into her middle school. The next day I headed to the home of a staff member and old friend that I worked with in my first summers at Eagle’s Nest. When she opened the door her huge smile melted away the years – nearly 25! After the camp presentation, while her daughter flipped through the viewbook and started to dream about the activities she would take this summer, Jeni and I chatted and giggled away as if we had just seen each other a few months ago. I echoed a sentiment that Dana had shared the night before; it isn’t

hard to reconnect with Eagle’s Nest friends, even after 25 years, because your camp friends are the ones who know the most genuine, best version of yourself. When I hugged her goodbye a few hours later I was filled with joy and excitement that even though she was far away, and many years had passed, Eagle’s Nest was still with Jeni, and now that her children are starting their own journey at Eagle’s Nest, she is re-connecting with camp in a whole new way. This summer, Eagle’s Nest will celebrate our 90th season. We have all of you to thank for helping us reach this milestone. You have helped us create each unique summer. You have inspired us with a thought for the day at Flag Raising, raised your voices with us in the Dining Hall, laughed with us during skits, and held our hands as we sang together to close the day. Thank you for standing in the circle with us, and thank you for your generous support. Because of you, Eagle’s Nest continues to be the creative, compassionate, active community that we all love. I hope to see you “on the road” or at 43 Hart Road.

A YEAR AT OA

Semesters 42 & 43

INTELLECT “Cornerstone Days inspire students to take a deeper look into wildlife, food systems, and diversity.

Like high schoolers across America, Outdoor Academy students study differential equations, verb conjugations, and the socio-political consequences of the French Revolution. Unlike most 10th and 11th graders, however, our students also explore the intricacies of human character, the art and science of leadership, the artistic traditions of the rich cultures that have inhabited our region, the skills needed to flourish in the beautiful backcountry of Western North Carolina, and the scientific and public policy challenges of environmental stewardship. Further distinguishing our school is the unique space we provide for our students to examine a

THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY subject that many people never study explicitly or with intention: themselves. We see the results of this intense self-examination every semester as our students discover and become their best selves. We, our school and our foundation, share with our students this passion for discovering and becoming our best selves. As I consider the accomplishments of the past year and look ahead to our strategic objectives for 2017, one unifying theme connects our many school improvement projects. That theme is our commitment to continually improving how we deliver on the promises contained in our Foundation’s bold mission statement: promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character. Proceeding from our informed intuition that those who possess the skills to live well in the natural world will also be inspired to protect it, we continue to improve our already-excellent outdoor education curricula. At the core of this initiative is an emphasis on finding, hiring, and retaining accomplished wilderness leaders and then investing in their professional development.

We are also critically evaluating our daily practices—our food choices, our processes for waste disposal, our selection of cleaning products—and identifying areas in which we fall short of our aspirations. We have been—and will continue to be—just as intentional with our approach to the betterment of human character. We have piloted and are now curricularizing a seminar that introduces OA students to the fundamentals of moral philosophy and the tenets of service-oriented leadership. We have also established a team to critically assess how our curricula currently promote the betterment of human character and to make recommendations regarding areas for improvement. The project of becoming our best selves—as individuals or as a school—is hard, hard, hard work. It’s also intensely exciting. To our many friends and alums whose generosity has made this good work possible, we are sincerely grateful. Thank you so much.
