ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Eagle’s Nest Families and Friends, I am so grateful for the continued outpouring of support and encouragement you provided Eagle’s Nest in 2021. Like 2020, this past year presented us with many challenges that needed to be faced in order to run healthy and safe programs. With you all by our side, we rose to those challenges and were once again rewarded with bright happy faces on campus this summer at camp, on Hante Adventures across the U.S., and in person learning throughout the school year at The Outdoor Academy. Over the course of last spring, the camp team spent countless hours reconfiguring how to run summer camp during COVID times. For a program whose core is formed on building community through membership in multiple smaller groups (cabins, table families, activities, and Kindreds), there was a great deal that had to be shifted to keep our campers primarily to four “forest groups”. Multiple dining tents were erected, activity sign ups/ assignments completely revamped, and a new community system of Kindreds were all rolled out successfully resulting in a 100% COVID free camp experience for summer 2021. Through your support, 91 of our 531 campers received scholarships totaling $105,409, of which $62,554 was funded by you, our incredibly generous donors. Throughout both semesters of OA, we were able to build a bubble where the students could live and learn without the constant pressures of masking, distancing, and screen time. Our faculty did a tremendous job in maintaining that bubble as they came and went from their outside lives. In 2021, 48 students found their way to 43 Hart Road, 25 of whom were awarded $153,300 in financial aid from our annual fund and endowed scholarships. Including funds from operations, we awarded these deserving students a total of $430,813, making their experience at OA a dream come true. Early in the year we were fortunate enough to be eligible for and awarded a second round of PPP funding. The loan, for which we have applied for forgiveness, provided the financing to fully support our team of faculty and staff for a portion of the year, and thereby, the wiggle room to successfully transition our budgeting model to one that better ensures our financial stability going forward. With our Board’s Finance Committee, we are revising our Financial Resiliency Plan based on a new financial model, creating another tool to help guide ENF well into the future. While we have much more to do, we continue to make strides toward our priority of becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. This past year we focused on addressing cultural appropriation and our policies for gender inclusion. I urge you to check out the Eagle Newsletters on our website for more information, and to look for the spring edition for news on further developments coming in the year ahead. As we look to 2022, we will continue to adapt as the times require, being innovative, and creative in working towards Eagle’s Nest’s upcoming Centennial in 2027. I am so grateful for each of you in our community, and to the incredible staff and faculty of our organization for their ongoing dedication to the ENF mission. With deepest thanks,

Wow! What a year it’s been. In a time of great challenge, I find that my heart is filled with gratitude for all that we have accomplished in 2021. It’s taken a great deal of work and creativity to open camp in a pandemic, but your financial support and words of encouragement have helped us meet crucial needs so that we could open camp for the summer of 2021 - nearly two years after we said goodbye to our 2019 campers. The day that we opened the gate for our first full session of campers was one I’ll never forget. Noni and I blinked back tears as we greeted one excited camper after the next and welcomed them to camp. In total, we had nearly 500 campers join us for a summer of joy, play, and laughter, and a chance to let go of their stress and to reconnect with friends, nature, and with just being a kid.

Confidence

EAGLE’S NEST CAMP & HANTE There were challenges of course, but through a series of optimism, creativity, careful thought and consideration, and a lot of hard, meaningful work we did it! Being able to experience camp together seemed more meaningful after so much time apart. I loved seeing campers play together and catch fireflies on Nature Hill during camp fires, or shout joyfully as they jumped into the lake. Our days seemed to be filled with excited chatter and belly laughs. And of course - we brought back lunchtime singing every day in Cabin 7 field (which offered the opportunity for dancing too). Camp 2021 refilled our hearts.

ever worked. The past summer could not have been possible without you. Your support reaffirms what I know to be true of Eagle’s Nest: we are a group of people who exemplify the best of what a community can be. Thank you!

As I look forward to the summer of 2022, it’s easy to smile. I know that we’ll be able to provide a space for children to relax, find peace, be inspired, and be themselves. I can’t wait to open our gates again in June, and I hope that we’ll be able to see many of you on campus soon as well - until then, you will be in our hearts, just as I know that Eagle’s Nest is in yours.

As I reflect back on the many months that led up to the opening of camp, and also the months that made up our summer, I can’t even count the number of people that got us to this point. It is all of you - the alums that immediately reached out in support when we announced that we wouldn’t be able to open in 2020, the donors who gave generously to keep us afloat, the parents who trusted us to care for and protect their children, the campers who were flexible in the face of changes developed to keep them healthy, and the counselors who worked harder than any staff has

LETTER FROM THE

OA DIRECTOR Semesters 52 & 53 It’s a beautiful day here at The Outdoor Academy! Currently, 26 talented, courageous young folks hailing from California to right here in Transylvania County are hiking snowy trails and braving below-freezing nights on their weeklong Orientation Trek in Pisgah National Forest. Over the past year, we have truly hit our stride in figuring out how to operate a boarding school safely during these times, and the hard work that every member of the Eagle’s Nest Foundation Team does on the front end has allowed us to create a semester experience in which our teens can focus on the things they should be focusing on at this stage of their lives: connecting, experiencing, learning, and growing. In the spring, Semester 52 boasted 29 adventurous teens who helped us figure out how to deal with cold temperatures while also reminding us just how tough and adaptable young people can be. We

Intellect

had a balmier (and quieter) fall with a group of 18 students who took advantage of the smaller group to really lean into building incredibly close and meaningful relationships with one another. One conclusion at which we have arrived after adjusting the way we do things is that we love our extended Orientation Trek! Students have an opportunity to master outdoor skills, and shifting some of our CIRCLEs leadership and group decision-making lessons to the early days of a longer trek gives them a chance to jump right into this experience with a masterclass in communitybuilding on the small scale of a trek group. When they arrive on campus, they have already learned so much and are able to immediately begin building a strong community. We are seeing great outcomes across all aspects of life at OA, from classes to dorm life to kitchen crews to those little moments in which you overhear a student giving a peer some direct feedback (or those big moments when they give me direct feedback!) Your financial support of Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy has played a key role in this success. In order for us to get semesters up and running during January with the risk mitigation and learning outcomes that an extended trek

Environment

THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY offers, we have invested over $10,000 in winter clothing and gear. We now issue students puffy jackets, waterproof bibs, mittens, fleece pants, and zero-degree sleeping bags so that our time in the field during the winter is safe and enjoyable. We were able to offer $430,813 in financial aid during Semesters 52 and 53 to make this experience possible for deserving young people from all over the country, and the items you have sent to the Gear Lending Library are rounding out the kit for students who might not otherwise be able to afford quality outdoor equipment or clothing. You may not get to see the results of this generosity on a day to day basis like me, but trust me: there is nothing in the world quite like watching a semester group come together after a long Orientation Trek with the enthusiasm and sense of purpose that I see in these teens. Your donations—whatever the amount—make it possible. For that, I give thanks!

Sun Lodge Renovations Project Total raised in 2021: $35,969 Total # of donors: 73

The Sun Lodge Renovations Project was launched in 2021 in honor of Ted Wesemann, The Outdoor Academy’s founding director and long-time faculty member, in celebration of his retirement after 27 years. Renovation plans for the Sun Lodge in honor of Ted include replacing all 50 windows with double pane, wood frame windows, and installing two sets French Doors to open out from the Dining Room and Den onto a wide deck that will span the front of the entire building. There will be room on the deck for picnic tables and benches to hold classes and have meals. To make this building more accessible, we will build a ramp that will begin as a gravel path at ground level on the dining room side of Sun Lodge, gently inclining as it wraps behind the building as it climbs up the side of Sun Lodge where our clotheslines now stand. This ramp will reach the deck and provide access to the dining room, den and restroom. Building renovations will take place in 2023. Nearly $36,000 was raised for the Sun Lodge Project in 2021, and we will continue our fundraising efforts for this special project in 2022.
