The new Queens public library at Far Rockaway Set to open Winter 2021, this DDC library is the first new construction of a larger master plan for the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens. Built on the site of a Carnegie Library from the early 1900s, this is the third library on this site to provide a gathering space for everyone in the community. The library has been in construction for 2.5 years in which time I have gone from a team member to the main point of contact for the clients, contractors, and consultants.

The Quayside master plan development by Sidewalk Labs in collaboration with Snøhetta and Heatherwick is an experiment in providing living, working, and amenity spaces on a single plot of land with capabilities to adapt to the changing needs of the community. With a focus on expanding the possibilities of mass timber construction, we examined how this material lends itself to a building typology of a base structure with malleable units to allow for the desired flexibility of program.

The El Paso Children’s Museum of Science competition was won by Snøhetta in 2018. The team was challenged with expanding the downtown urban hub in El Paso, TX as well as creating a sister museum / education center to La Rodadora Espacio Interactivo in Juarez, Mexico. Twelve educational exhibitions surround the spaces focal point an interactive, climbing structure connecting all 4 floors.

Alongi Location: San Francisco, CA The Noe Valley Residence is a private home renovation and expansion of an existing craftsman-style San Francisco house. The family is from South Africa and desired to bring the warmth of the jarrah wood planks from the exterior, into the entrance, and through the space as a highlighting feature.

Alongi Location: San Francisco, CA The Cube II chair was a project for the New West Coast Design 2 exhibition at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. The exhibition highlighted work done by artists and designers working in traditional and new materials. John Lum Architecture was asked to design a chair as a follow-up piece to the DIFFA Dinning Womb, which also utilized cardboard’s structural capabilities as a furniture/ space creating material.

The Sensorium studio focused on creating a new way of living in a future post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, utilizing new technologies and robotics that are currently in development. The project is an experimental design creating a living experience where every human necessity is addressed through technology. After looking into Superstudio’s ‘Continuous Monument’ and Rem Koolhaas’s thesis ‘Exodus’ or ‘Voluntary Prisoners of Architecture’, we developed the modern day experiment we called Digitalism.

Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts: CITA Institute Professors: M. Timke/P. Nicholas Project Team: 12 RASA students
The Ambitions to Grow exhibition, along with its accompanying workshop, investigates real-time, agent-driven approaches towards design in a collaborative, hands-on manner. The experimental workshop embraces collaborative concepts of nature. Utilizing a system of space filing with truncated octahedrons, four groups worked in parallel towards completing certain objectives. Like termites, each group had only local awareness, responding only to sensory input from their direct local environment. Where carefully planned and executed lines of action were exceedingly rare, the outcome reflected the optimal for each group’s design task negotiated through the process of building.
