Anybody who has met Sophie Layton, or seen one of her spirited colourful works, knows how vibrant and dynamic this young artist is. This exhibition celebrates the particularly energised and artistically-formative recent few years of Sophie’s career. In the autumn and winter of 2017, she was accepted to and attended a printmaking fellowship in Japan. Showing how much the clients of Eames Fine Art believe in this artist’s work, present and future, this residency was partly funded by the gallery’s community of friends and customers, each donor becoming a ‘patron’. Since 2017, Sophie has been building upon the skills and inspiration gleaned from this trip, and fans of her work are rewarded with the vitality of this new collection that combines three different art forms to create something truly unique.

Sophie Layton trained at Camberwell School of Art and completed a degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton in 2009. Two works from her degree show were selected for inclusion in the Aldrich collection and several others were acquired for private collections. Since graduation Layton’s work has featured in a number of exhibitions including the Affordable Art Fair and Originals 10 at the Mall Galleries. Refracting Light will be her third solo show in London. Sophie’s work consists of a series of monotypes that explore light and aim to create expression through the use of subtle colour and a rich, painterly quality in print. She uses tones placed side by side to evoke qualities of light and shifts of mood. In 2017 Sophie was accepted to a residency at three different printmaking studios in Japan at which she learned the mokuhanga printing technique. This has now been incorporated into her practice to enhance the translucence of her colours. Sophie lives and works in London.
