Phoenix Productions 2018
Don Cunningham - Welcome from the Chair To date we have had what can only be described as a spectacular summer weather wise, and summer also means it’s time for us to enjoy another spectacular show from Phoenix Productions. This year the group are thrilled to present “ Into the Woods” a fairy tale romp that will be enjoyed by all the family young and old. Thank you all for coming along and supporting the production and we trust that you will relax, enjoy the show, and then encourage others to attend. This year Phoenix will have been in existence for 20 years and it has gone from strength to strength over those two decades due to the incredible hard work put in by a countless number of people both on stage and behind the scenes. The Willoughby family were a part of that great bunch of people for many years and it is with deep regret that we note the passing this year of Sally a true friend of Phoenix. The local community has also over the years come out in its thousands to attend and enjoy the end product , the cabarets and the summer shows. Without the support of everyone the project would not have survived and for that support Phoenix is extremely grateful. Many superb shows have been produced over the years however the real benefit of Phoenix is truly measured by what the project has done for the many cast members that have participated in the “ Phoenix Experience”. Invaluable life skills such as teamwork, social interaction, responsibility, communication, self-confidence, and having fun are just

a few that those in the Phoenix family have been taught. Hopefully it has benefited them in their personal lives and indeed the communities where they live and work. Phoenix is truly a community project and deserves the support of the community. Many of our friends and sponsors who unselfishly provide that support are listed in the programme and I ask that you take time to recognise what they do and support them in turn. A really special thank you must go to the Thurles Lions Club who have been so helpful to Phoenix in so many ways over the years, and particularly this year as they made Phoenix the main beneficiary of their vintage rally day. Your work in the community is incredible and your support to Phoenix is invaluable. Finally I wish to thank the Phoenix committee, a truly wonderful group of people who continue to give their time and talent to the Phoenix project and are a joy to work with. Unfortunately this year due to other commitments our secretary Mary Murphy had to step down after years of dedicated service. Mary a heartfelt thank you for all the great work you have done. Thanks also must go to Siobhán King for stepping up and taking on the secretarial duties, and we are delighted to welcome Karen Hynes to the committee and look forward to her contribution to the project over the years. Enjoy the show, thank you all for your ongoing support and here’s looking forward to the next 20 years.
About Phoenix Phoenix Productions was founded in 1998 to harness the talent of young people in Thurles. It is a non-profit organisation. Through the use of a professional director and musical director Phoenix Productions has staged a musical production every year since 1998. It depends on our loyal audiences, grant aid and community sponsorship for its survival. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported Phoenix over the past 20 years and we hope that it will continue into the future.

Synopsis
“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival; and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood Witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. As we journey through the woods we also meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. By the end of first act, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in act two, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.

Phoenix Productions 2018
Gerard O’ Brien - A word from the Producer Welcome to our 20th anniversary celebration of Phoenix Productions. We are delighted to present Into the Woods to our loyal supporters and sincerely hope that you enjoy the performance as much as we have enjoyed the rehearsal process. Mol an Oige agus tiocfaidh siad - Praise the young and they shall succeed. This sentiment is essentially the ethos of Phoenix Productions. Founded to foster and develop stagecraft in young people of our great town and its surrounding areas, Phoenix has come along way from its sputtering ignition on a miserable Sunday afternoon in 1998. Thirtyeight girls and three brave/mad boys appeared at our first rehearsal for The Rock Nativity, performed in December of that year. In 2018 there were sixty-six young people at our auditions for Into the Woods. This production has been the same as every other year, a rollercoaster journey with lots of new blood, some stalwart performers that have been committed to Phoenix since 2010 when they joined to be part of ‘Oliver’. Little did they know, at that point in
their lives that a few short years later, they would become the front line, or as one of this cast once described a previous cast grouping as, Phoenix Royalty. Those of us involved in this project have been honoured and privileged to witness, probably in excess of two hundred and fifty young people come through our doors. Without exception they have all become the finest of adults. The commitment shown by them to the beast that the ‘Phoenix’ has become is truly humbling. Their musical, dancing and dramatic accomplishments have been acknowledged by our own loyal supporters and audiences. Some have graduated and gone on to perform leading roles in Thurles Musical Society and other societies nationwide. Some others pursue careers in performing arts, in production on stage and screen alike. Twenty years of summers filled with music, song and dance. We have had support from so many people over such a long period. For the random €20 notes slipped into someone’s hand to help defray costs, the loan of professional dentist’s chair in 2002, countless hours spent designing sets,
plotting lights, rehearsing orchestras, production or hire of costumes we express heartfelt gratitude. A grouping such as this cannot survive without amazing work behind the scenes. Firstly, our amazing committee that work tirelessly to help in any way possible to make this project a success. An eclectic mix of people bringing their skills and expertise to the table some of whom no longer have any connection with the cast. Once again this has fostered very many sound friendships. I wish to thank our Director Debbie Kiernan, Musical Director – David Wray, Musical Associate – Michael Young, Set Design – John O’Donoghue, Production Manager - Eamonn B. Shanahan, Set Construction – Allan Butler, Lights and Sound – Star Systems. Our motley band of young people, has created an amazing sense of community which has fostered fast friendships and even a few marriages. The family of Phoenix Productions has grown enormously. The spirit of Phoenix Productions remains very strong and it is hoped that it will continue to burn brightly, with your support for many years to come.
a tribute to Our Friend SALLY Phoenix Productions has been blessed with many that have given freely of their time, skills and energy over the last twenty years. Sadly, our great friend and supporter Sally Willoughby passed away suddenly this year. Sally’s stoic presence in the makeup room backstage for many years was remarkable. Indeed, on a number of occasions Sally had to be pressganged to watch her own children perform on stage because she feared
WILLOUGHBY
that she may be needed by other cast members, to be made up, sewn up or bandaged up, as required. A quiet unassuming personality that was a bedrock of support for all in the back stage team. We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Willoughby family and can assure them that Sally’s contribution to the Phoenix family is deeply appreciated and will not be forgotten

The next summer Joe was back again for Phoenix’s production of “Peter Pan” as the lost boy Curly which he found a more lighthearted role. In April of the following year
