Business Challenge Manufacturers of high-technology labeling equipment must respond to industry demands for non-stop production, costeffective short-run printing, and reduced waste and noise emissions by continuous investment and development. As part of the product evolution, processes which were once completed by individual machines are now typically run through a single piece of equipment or a modular system. This increasingly complex production sequence must be managed and monitored through highlyfunctional, intuitive, human-machine interfaces which allow operators to do their jobs with speed and accuracy. EAO worked with a manufacturer of label converting and finishing equipment to understand their requirements for a control system. This client is a global leader, with high-tech facilities in the UK,
Netherlands, Spain, Germany and United States. One of their foremost systems is a complete modular solution to digital converting with options for hot and cold foil wrapping, flat bed applications, screen printing, lamination, camera systems and more. Solution There are two main control panels for operating this equipment, both built inhouse by the customer. A primary, central control panel allows operators to set-up new production processes and monitor existing ones. An industrial PC with a resistive touchscreen is used to control and monitor production sequences. It features a large graphic display and virtual keypad for scrolling though on-screen menus. This operator interface provides the real-time data that

drives productivity. Not all functionality is controlled through the touchscreen. Electromechanical components are used to operate other functions within the overall humanmachine interface system (HMIS) including the primary start-up and shutdown sequence, and several emergencystops across the whole system. A secondary control panel to the rear of the machine is used to control a variety of functions. The client places great importance on ergonomic design combined with exceptional high engineering and components to ensure long-life and reliability. For this reason they chose EAO to supply the pushbuttons and HMI components. Customer benefits EAO recommended the Series 04 range to meet this client’s need for quality, reliability and design. Series 04 is a comprehensive range of 22.5mm switches which includes pushbuttons, indicators, key-locking switches, selector switches, and emergency stops. They are sealed against dust and moisture to IP65 and operate in temperatures from -25°C to 55°C. They are offered in raised- or flush-mounting styles and lens materials alongside an extensive range of options. A ‘push-in terminal’ (PIT) contact block with a Phoenix Contact spring terminal is optional for the Series 04. The client uses a mix of components including flush-mounting LED illuminated pushbuttons with natural finish aluminium bezels, raised indicators, and emergency
