Symposium Opening & Keynote Address -

From Community Theatre to a Theatre of the Community - by Eugene Van Erven, Artistic Director of the International Community Arts Festival, Rotterdam.

Making Something of our own, Taking Something Away

This keynote speech from Eugene Van Erven, addresses the challenges of making theatre in a community setting, the opportunities it presents and the different approaches of international artists who have attended ICAF in the past. Eugene van Erven holds a Ph.D in Comparative Literature from Vanderbilt University (1985, US). He has worked at Victoria University in Wellington (New Zealand) and at Utrecht University (Humanities, University College), where he has taught literature and drama courses.

- a Declan Gorman Masterclass Declan entered the theatre professionally in 1985, when he played the lead role in Iwan Goll’s German Expressionist drama ‘Methusalem’, in a version adapted by director, Joe O’Byrne. Joe and Declan jointly formed Co-Motion Theatre Company at a time of remarkable ferment among a new generation of artists, musicians and theatremakers in Ireland, and the company – along with Rough Magic, Red Kettle, Passion Machine and others – blazed the trail for the independent sector in Ireland. After five years of producing and performing with Co-Motion, he left to branch out into areas of community-engaged theatre and arts, joining City Arts Centre as the Theatre Programme Director. This socially-engaged dimension has remained an important part of his practice ever since. In 1997 he established Upstate Theatre Project, Drogheda with a number of community and theatre activists.

Between 2004 and 2006 he conducted oral history research and taught in the Caribbean island of Aruba. He has been back at Utrecht University since then, teaching in the theatre studies department and working ‘on loan’ to the Community Art Lab of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht and as artistic director of the International Community Arts Festival in Rotterdam.
