DUE DIL GER ENCE in organizing a new region please contact Michael Hammond at 310-322-7701 PDT USA or hammondms@earthlink.com. Please order your Christmas gifts by the end of November to give us time to ship them to you by Christmas. In this issue, John Barrett writes about Luftgekuhlt (Air-cooled), a special event honoring rare and important examples of air-cooled Porsche cars, held in Venice California and presented by Patrick Long and Howie Idelson. The events of the Monterey Motorsports Reunion including the Carmel Concours on the Avenue, Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, PCA Werks Reunion, Pebble Beach Tour and the Pebble Beach Concours are captured by John Goriup. Sam Cabiglo reviews the history of the first 911 and the last 356 manufactured, both owned by Jerry Seinfield, and Mike Shaver documents the ongoing restoration of his 1968 Targa, serial #11880001 in part three of the process. Karim Noureldin recounts his 2,000 mile round trip journey from Switzerland to classic Le Mans with his wife and two little girls aged, 2 years and 6 months, along with some history of his 1970 911T. Keith Martin describes the long time ownership and restoration of the 1964 911 (one of 14 examples still surviving) he bought in 1973 when he was 19. Bernie Rapaport relates the history of his car that sat in his garage for 25 years and his first Porsche event, the PCA Werks Reunion; and Patrick Long, Porsche Werks Driver, recounts his experience driving Alan Benjamin’s 1967 911S at the Rolex Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. The Region Reports include: Xavier Petit-Jean-Boret descriptions of the Autodrome Heritage Festival on June 7 and 8 at the Autodrome Linas Montlhéry, the 24 Hours of Le Mans-Classic British Welcome on June 14 and 15 and the Le Mans Classic on July 4-6. Massimo Bernacconi also recounts a Porsche gathering in Belgium with some Early 911S Registry members. The next issue will be out by the middle of December, so please send in some regional news in by the end of November. If anyone is interested
As always, I consistently need new material for coming issues. Come on folks, here in the states and around the early 911 world, tell us about your car or pass along some of your technical knowledge! Be a star in ESSES! Write something, include high resolution photos, send it in and it will appear in ESSES. Don’t worry about formatting, spelling, grammar or layout; we’ll take care of all that. We have another two listings on our NEW PRODUCTS page. If you contact either of the featured companies, please be sure to say you saw them in ESSES! NEW PRODUCTS showcases the latest specialized products for our community at no charge to the manufacturer or seller. If you have or have come across something you think would be helpful to our members, please e-mail me at johndilger@aol.com. Fred Trueman seeks to ensure that each of you get the correct number of issues, based upon your renewal date. Your renewal date and membership number are printed on your address label. V24 N2, the last issue, had a renewal date of June 1, 2014 and this issue, V24 N3 had a renewal date of September 1, 2014. This issue is late in order to include coverage of the Monterey Historics and the related events in the area. The next issue, V24 N4 will be mailed out by the middle of December. If V24 N2 or this one is marked on the back cover with the “LAST ISSUE, PLEASE RENEW” stamp, please renew right away so as not to miss the next issue. We will also be sending out e-mail reminders. If your e-mail address has changed during the last six months, please send an update to Fred Trueman at fctruem@verizon.net as soon as possible.
Registry has just added a column for that important information. Early 911S Registry paid members whose cars are already in our data base PLEASE email Fred Trueman at fctruem@verizon.net with your car’s build date (if known) by MM-DD-YYYY, please in 10 characters. If you only know part of your date, like month and year but not day, please fill in those two spaces with x’s. For brand new or future members, we will try to add this question/space to all of our membership applications, online and mail in. If you don’t know your build date please leave it blank. The Early 911S Registry is looking for an Internet Advertising expert to help us sell advertising space on our web site. If you have experience and would like to help, please contact John Dilger at johndilger@aol.com or 714-235-4981 PST. Domestic dues for membership in the Early 911S Registry are currently $45.00, international dues are $65.00 and associates dues remain at $5.00. We had to raise the membership due to increased printing and postage costs. Please send the correct amount with your renewal or new membership.

THE DIARY OF A
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BARRETT
PORSCHE ENTHUSIAST
Behind Deus Ex Machina’s shop on the Corner of Venice Blvd. was a sight to behold, over 30 of the most gorgeous air-cooled Porsches in existence today. There were some of the finest examples I have seen, dating all the way back to the mid-‘50s and there was no shortage of familiar faces in attendance as well. The celebration was hosted by Patrick Long and Howie Idelson who together assembled an amazing group of Porsche fanatics, for an unforgettable Sunday morning.
06 S EPTEMBER 2014 FALL
Cars began arriving early to grab a good spot, knowing the parking lot seemed to be designed for six regular cars; Patrick did a great job of directing all of the cars into the tight spots, designating each area for a certain model type. With 356s and Speedsters in one corner and 993s and 964s in the other, it was a melting pot of the finest Porsches Southern California had to offer. The Deus Café was the perfect backdrop for such an
event, armed with delicious coffee in one hand; it was hard to keep my excitement at bay. Once inside, there was an excellent example of a 1979 paint to sample 930 turbo against the wall and next to the cash register, compliments of Porsche AG. The café had an assortment of cool posters and vintage motorcycle wear adorned the shelves. There was a great display of Luftgekühlt (German for air-cooled) shirts in different colors along with fresh screen prints of Luftgekühlt

posters. The atmosphere was top notch, lots of likeminded folk enjoying all that is Porsche, with icons like Patrick Dempsey, Magnus Walker, Jeff Zwart, and Chad McQueen in attendance, it was a real treat to meet and greet some of the greats, but the true treat was all the amazing air-cooled Porsche’s. The parking lot was overflowing with Porsches, seeming to pop out of every corner, parked in precarious po-
sitions from the street to the sidewalk. There was even a ‘73 Carrera RS nestled in a corner between a trash bin and an old bike; it was almost surreal. Magnus Walker brought three of his favorites to the show, including his “Outlaw” #277 (a 1971 911T), a 1979 911SC and a 1976 930 Turbo, all sporting his new Outlaw 001 wheel. I might say they all looked like they meant business. Alongside Magnus’ cars was a beautiful example from Singer Vehicle Design. It’s an understatement
to say it was top notch; I could spend all day with the car admiring all its tiny details. Across the parking lot was a small group of immaculate 356s in every variety of coupes, convertibles, Speedsters, and replicas. Each one totally different from the next and each owner had a story. Even Rod Emory was there with a few Outlaws, but my favorite was his 1956 Outlaw Speedster that looked track-ready. On the other side of the event sat early air-cooled 911s starting with a

Representing R-Gruppe, was a stunning 1970 911S example from Ray Crawford and it wasn’t your typical 911S either, as its traditional 2.2 liter was adorned with dual plugs, a clear sign this S is a pure monster. gorgeous Signal Yellow, with perfect Cibie rally lights to boot. There were a surprising number of all-original Porsches, but none stood out more than a super clean example brought by Bill Manual. His yellow 1970T was as clean as they come and has been well taken care of for being almost 45 years old. But the biggest accomplishment this 2.2 liter has to its name is that has clocked more than 850,000 California miles, a feat that not many have come close to, and to this day it is as
close to showroom condition as when it left the dealership in 1970. The Luftgekühlt event displayed a lot of early air-cooled Porsches, but did not forget about the later model 911s, featuring not one but two 964 C4s, Porsche’s first all-wheel drive vehicles. Hiding in the corner under some overgrown shrubs was a super rare 993 GT2, said to be one of only two in the United States, and one of only 57 ever made. It was a sight to behold, with its factory wide-body fenders, gorgeous 3-piece
Speedline wheels specially designed for the GT2 and massive rear wing, with its functional cold air intakes for the heart pounding twin turbocharged 3.6L under the rear deck lid (developing 450-horsepower). It was impressive! No Porsche event is complete without the legendary Jeff Zwart, who drove his personal 1971 911ST African Safari rally car all the way from Costa Mesa. It was as if it just rolled off the support truck to start a rally stage: spare tire in the back seat, heavy

duty front and rear steel bumpers, massive mud flaps, train horn and did I mention white-walled rally tires? I don’t know if I will ever see another one again, it was a real treat. This first Luftgekühlt event was a huge success, and I’m looking forward to the next event just around the corner. Nowhere else in the United States could there be so many diverse and rare Porsche Cars as there are in Southern California on any given Sunday.
